WE ARE PROUD OF BOLTON. WE ARE PROUD OF BOLTON’S PEOPLE. WE STRIVE TO MAKE BOLTON PROUD OF US. For those of you I haven’t been lucky enough to meet yet, my name is Elizabeth. I am your new Artistic Director and it’s an honour to serve you. Bolton is an extraordinary town because of its great people. In the coming years we want to celebrate our loyal audiences and reach out to new audiences that we have yet to meet. We want the Octagon Theatre to be a place for everyone, for all the people of Bolton and new visitors who we will welcome to the town. Everybody really is welcome. Help us spread the word! From April 2016, the Octagon will make more work for children and young people. You can bring your young children here to listen to stories in our new regular Storyplay sessions. These stories have been suggested by audiences, participants and staff members - make sure you tell us what you would like to see. We will premiere The Macbeth Curse, a brand new play by Terry Deary, writer of the wonderful Horrible Histories books. The Macbeth Curse will be performed in our Studio Theatre, but we will also be taking it into schools - so let us know if you would like us to visit you!

Elizabeth Newman Octagon Artistic Director

As well as new work, we can also look forward to John Osborne’s landmark drama Look Back in Anger, a collaboration with Derby Theatre. Inspired by Osborne, and many other great playwrights, we launch our first National Octagon Prize. An exceptional panel of judges will support us to select the dramas that we will produce in 2017.

In the New Year we will also open our Studio doors to new artists, companies and theatre makers. We will present over fifteen exciting new works in our first Reveal season in June. This compliments our production of the classic musical Singin’ in the Rain; a sensational musical that celebrates truth, art and love.

We will produce our first young people’s production in our main auditorium in the summer. The Secret Garden will be performed by 100 local young people who will be supported by a team of actors, myself and the rest of the new Artistic Team to present a brand new adaptation of this great story of love, family and friendship.

Next year we hope you’ll join us for our Octagon Dinner Party, a festival of South Asian Arts events. More details to be announced soon!

We are now collaborating with the National Theatre, hosting an NT Connections Partner Festival in May in which we will present seven contemporary plays performed by eight companies of young people. These dramas were commissioned by the National Theatre especially for young audiences, but can be enjoyed by all ages.

Food also inspires our first Octagon Pleasure Beach. We will transform our main auditorium into a gigantic seaside resort for the entire family to enjoy free theatrical events during the Bolton Food and Drink Festival. You’ll also be able to catch our feminist Fairy Tales on Foot happening all over Bolton, as we take theatre out onto the streets. An outside production will even be happening in Bolton’s favourite chippy, the Olympus Fish and Chip Shop in May 2016. We don’t just perform plays for our audiences; you can come in and take part. We want your ideas and your experiences. We want to hear from you!

THE OCTAGON PEOPLE’S THEATRE

The Octagon Theatre was built for the people of Bolton and we want to welcome more and more of the community into the Theatre to take part. Through all of our events, groups and activities we want to inspire more people to experience theatre and be more creative themselves. We create theatre in the belief that it can enrich our communities and fundamentally change people's lives for the better. Please come and participate in your theatre - you might be surprised by some of the things that you can do here. There aren’t just events inside the Theatre; we work with individuals and groups of all ages to create stimulating, challenging, and culturally relevant artistic programmes that encourage creativity and nurture a love of theatre. The Artistic Team lead a range of projects at the Octagon Theatre and across the region in schools and community venues. There are so many ways to get involved at the Octagon, here are just a few: ● ● ● ● ● ●

“I doubt if I could love anyone who did not wish to see Look Back in Anger.” The Observer on Look Back in Anger at the Royal Court, 1956 In a cramped flat in 1950’s Derby, Jimmy Porter is angry, bored, and frustrated with the limitations of life and increasing political decay. He finds release for his pent-up emotions by attacking his upper class wife Alison, whose loyalty to her husband is seemingly at odds with his cruelty towards her. The couple’s close friend Cliff provides the sounding board that they both so desperately need to gain perspective on their tragic, co-dependent relationship. Jimmy Porter embodies the frustrations of a generation of working class men yearning for something they never had - lamenting the fact that “there aren’t any good, brave causes left”. A celebration of linguistic vigour, John Osborne’s seminal play changed the way theatre presented working class voices on stage, coining the phrase ‘angry young men’ to describe an entire generation of disillusioned artists and working class young men in postWorld War Two British society. 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of Look Back In Anger which was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1956. In 1959 it was brought to life on film by a cast of iconic and charismatic actors, including Richard Burton and Mary Ure.

Don’t miss the chance to see one of the most breathtaking musicals of all time, live on stage at the Octagon Theatre. Silent movie stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are riding high on success, loved by audiences and studio execs alike - but not each other! Linked romantically to heighten their popularity, the couple could not be more different. The introduction of a new era of ‘talkies’ is about to set the pair even more at odds - spelling disaster for Lina, whose vocal range leaves a lot to be desired. Desperate for the box office favourites to remain at the height of popularity, a talented chorus girl, Kathy, is brought in to provide Lina’s audio, setting off a series of events that no movie exec could have scripted… Made famous by the stunning tap dance routines, memorable music, and on-screen chemistry between silver screen legends Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly, Singin in the Rain will be performed in all of its technicolour glory, featuring live music, dance, and, of course, rain! Featuring all of your favourite songs from the 1952 MGM film, including Good Morning, Make ‘Em Laugh, You Are My Lucky Star and the title song, Singin’ in the Rain!

Set over one eventful night in a pub in the North of England, Two is a play about people. People in their extraordinary, and ordinary, everyday lives, and the strength of the human spirit - stronger than anything on offer behind the bar.

First performed at the Octagon in 1989, the Sunday Times called the play a “brilliantly, surrealistically and comically poetic” piece. The production won the Manchester Evening News Best New Play Award before transferring to the Young Vic in London. Subsequently this ever popular play has been revived twice at the Octagon over the years. Following the run of Two the Octagon will present a world premiere by Jim Cartwright of Two 2 - revisiting the same pub, with characters both old and new. Turn the page to find out more!

“There’s been a lot of copping-offs round that side, two fallings-out here, and a fight, three proposals of marriage round there, and a birth in a snug. And it’s nowhere near last orders yet!” Landlord, Two

Photo: Michael Shelford

From opening time to last orders, all walks of life pass through this pub, and the comings and goings are watched over by the all-seeing, and all knowing, proprietors - the landlord and landlady at the heart and soul of their local. So get yourself a drink and settle in, it’ll all be happening tonight…

From the writer of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Bed, Road and Two comes the world premiere production of Two 2; Jim Cartwright’s brand new play that revisits the lives, loves and laughs of regulars in a Northern boozer.

At odds with one another, but holding it together one shift at a time, their lives have become as bitter as the ale they serve. But when a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself in the form of a one way ticket out of there, will either of them have the courage to turn their backs on the pub, and most importantly, each other?

Thu 10 March – Sat 2 April 2016 In a suburban semi on a cold winters evening, a collection of family, friends and acquaintances gather to celebrate a fortieth birthday. There’s Josie, the forty year old dominatrix conducting business from her living room and in no mood to celebrate; her daughter Brenda-Marie with a wisdom beyond her years; Martha - Josie’s who’ss devout Irish cleaner who’ none the wiser and happy to keep it that way; and, of course, Lionel - Josie’s most loyal client with a heart of gold and a secret yearning to wear ladies dresses. But no party would be complete without entertainment, and for once Josie has the night off. Elvis impersonator off. Timothy Wong has entered the building and only the arrival of a very

unexpected guest could upstage the King himself. Martha, Josie and the Chinese Elvis premiered at the Octagon Theatre in 1999 and was received with critical acclaim and regular standing ovations. It’s 1902 and when Sir Alphonse King and his Sixty Minute Shakespeare Ensemble start rehearsing Macbeth for a Royal Command Performance they find themselves struggling against spookily unexpected circumstances. While Lady Macbeth is busy complaining about Sir Alphonse’s ego and Macduff is playing the fool to keep everyone’s spirits up, mild-mannered stage manager Miss Jessica Peacock has to battle her stage-fright to save the show. But with an actor missing, props breaking in their hands and ghostly goings on growing by the minute, the entire troupe begin to fear the worst. Have they fallen foul of the infamous Macbeth Curse? In a chaotically condensed version of Shakespeare’s own words and integrated with Musical Hall songs and cutting-edge Edwardian theatricality, Terry Deary’s brand new play is a perfect introduction to the magic and madness of Macbeth. Recommended for age 7 years and over. If you would like to book this production to perform in your school or education setting then it will be touring the Bolton area from Mon 11 – Sat 16 April, for more information email participation@octagonbolton.co.uk

This classic novel, listed in the BBC’s ‘Big Reads’ top 100 all time favourite books, is brought to life in a brand-new adaptation by BAFTA-nominated writer, Janys Chambers. Transporting us from the vibrancy of India to the Gothic mystery of a crumbling Yorkshire mansion, this sparkling performance by some of our best young local actors tells the often funny, always moving story of a lonely, seemingly unlovable child who, in her search for ‘a little bit of earth’, transforms the lives of everyone around her.

LOVE THE OCTAGON? SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND HELP YOUR THEATRE AND COMMUNITY FLOURISH! We are a registered charity and rely on the support of our funders, sponsors and donors to continue our inspiring work on stage and in the community. We work with the community. We positively change lives. We are a home for playwrights and makers. We create theatre in the belief that it can enrich our communities and fundamentally transform peoples’ lives for the better. What we’ve achieved during the last year… Introduced Relaxed Performances – where those with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability or sensory or communication need are able to watch a performance in a much more relaxed setting. Introduced Captioned Performances – where the spoken word is displayed on a unit providing access to live performances for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing customers. Engaged with young people - over the financial year 2014/15, 2617 young people participated in one of our learning activities. All because of our amazing supporters!

Can you help us continue our stimulating work both on and off stage?

Relaxed performances are specifically designed to welcome into theatres people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability, a sensory or communication need. Or indeed anyone who feels that they, or their family, would enjoy a more relaxed environment. They have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere to reduce anxiety levels. There is a relaxed attitude to audience noise and movement, and small changes to the sound levels and lighting effects. There are also other provisions such as visual stories, a chill-out space, and extra staff around to offer a helping hand. All tickets for Relaxed Performances are £10 with free essential carer tickets for those with additional needs, plus one free ticket for every 10 tickets booked.
