Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows the struggle of lawyer Atticus Finch as he strives to defend a wrongly accused black man in 1930’s Deep South. Told through the innocent eyes of his fiery daughter, Scout, we witness how her small town is ravaged by racial prejudice. Capturing the delights and mysteries of childhood, together with the pressures of Atticus’ fight for justice, To Kill a Mockingbird is as poignant and an important story now as it was when it was first written over 50 years ago. Join us as we bring the heat and intensity of the novel to our auditorium in this moving stage adaptation.

Fri 21 October – Sat 5 November 2016 Families and friendships are torn apart in Shakespeare’s epic play The Winter’s Tale. King Leontes is tormented by a paranoid delusion that his wife, Hermione, is having an affair with his best friend. After throwing Hermione in prison and abandoning their new-born child to the wilderness, the King only then realises their innocence. On discovering the death of his wife, Leontes is inconsolable with grief and regret… is there any hope for redemption? With song, dance, laughter and one of the most extraordinary climaxes in any of Shakespeare's plays, this powerful and deeply moving story of forgiveness is brought to life in Bolton on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. 8

“Yeh. An’ it might be worthless in the end. But I had a choice. I chose, me. Because of what you’d given me. I had a choice.” Frank has almost given up completely. Given up on his ambition to be a poet and bored of teaching undergraduate English students, he reflects morosely on his life. That is until Rita walks in. A 29 year old, married hairdresser, Rita has decided to take control of her life and earn herself an education. With Rita’s brash honesty and Frank’s deep intellect, each inspires the other as they both begin to wake up to life in their own way. Willy Russell’s award-winning play is an uplifting tale of self-discovery where we witness how the power of choice comes through education.

Wed 26 April – Sat 6 May 2017 ‘I write this sitting in the kitchen sink...’ Cassandra is 17. She’s writing a diary about her eccentric family: her irritating elder sister Rose; her unconventional stepmother Topaz; her orphaned admirer Stephen; and her novelist father James, who hasn’t written a word in years. They are behind with the rent for the tumbledown castle that seemed so romantic when they moved in. The roof is leaking, it never stops raining and the family is surviving on oatcakes and eggs. But the new landlord is a wealthy young American, with an attractive younger brother, and spring is in the air. Perhaps things are about to change. Set in the bohemian England of the 1930s, Dodie Smith’s worldwide bestselling classic is a warm and sharply funny coming-of-age story. 18

Renowned playwright Alan Bennett’s masterful collection of monologues are beloved to many since they first aired on television over 15 years ago. In these moving and affectionate pieces, Bennett depicts the bittersweet tales of seemingly ordinary and uneventful lives. Poignant and wonderfully observant, this is a rare opportunity to see three of the original Talking Heads live on stage.

Relaxed performances Relaxed performances are specifically designed to welcome into theatres people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability, a sensory or communication need. Or indeed anyone who feels that they, or their family, would enjoy a more relaxed environment. They have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere to reduce anxiety levels. There is a relaxed attitude to audience noise and movement, and small changes to the sound levels and lighting effects. There are also other provisions such as visual stories, a chill-out space, and extra staff around to offer a helping hand. All tickets for Relaxed Performances are £10 with free essential carer tickets for those with additional needs, plus one free ticket for every 10 tickets booked.
