WICKED!! What an actionpacked Issue this one is! Holy, it has been all go with drag racing, burnout comps and wickedly cool hot rod and muscle car shows going on! The poor ole daily has been cranking up the miles and chewing up the tyres this month getting around it all to get amongst the action! BUT HOW COOL has it been! The shows I’ve been getting to have been awesome!
Check out our video coverage on our YouTube channel
With Tararua Rodders running their biannual show with all new cars on display in the two halls was an absolute cracker! Plus the car park out the back for the day visitors turning into a show all by itself is just a bonus for this show.
Te Aroha Cruise In was another show getting up early to rock over to! The variety at that show was awesome as well and was a fantastic way to kick off the summer season of shows all about to happen. The weekend events are all kicking off too with Premier Events having their Prowear Chrome Horsepower Festival featuring a night time burnout competition with rocking music and flames to keep any rev-head happy! We’ve covered that fully in this issue here so definitely park up to get amongst this issue! If you haven’t spotted us on Facebook at lunchtimes on a Friday yet, make sure to tune in as we have started a short “What’s on” video to try and let everyone know what
shows and events are on for the weekend.
the action, so I’m pretty stoked about that.
If you want your clubs event announced on the video, drop me a flyer or simply add it into the post in the comments. That way we can all get amongst what’s going on as it’s such a mission to keep up with everything happing now with so much going on.
I can almost see the end of the work under there now, but holy it’s been a mission! Like they all are really aren’t they!
The summer season of shows is certainly kicking off with the planner starting to fill up with next years events already. I know I’ve already started planning the Southern trip again to get amongst the action in the South.
SO GET AMONGST all! Rip into this issue and check out the action and then catch me out there and come say “hey” ROCK N ROLL! Giggles (aka Bogan)
Our very own show “Farmer Autovillage Tauranga Motorfest” is coming up fast! This is going to be a way cool show again and our awesome sponsors have got behind us again with a heap of giveaways for entrants which is just awesome! I so love our sponsors! They get fully behind our scene with the drag racing, shows and burnout comps. So if you can return the favor and make sure you head to them first when searching for anything you think they may have, please do. They honestly keep the scene alive for us to enjoy.

Mangakino Hop also went off, wickedly this year, with full-on horsepower action on the lake, in the air and in the fields. The crowd turning up for that show was awesome and the variety of cars rolling in was fantastic to see!
On the Coupe front, I have actually managed to get a bit done under the ole girl even though I’ve been roaring around the country catching

GET AMONGST this wicked weekend of action! From burnouts, drifting, power skids, performance track time, drag racing and roll racing to just cruising with your mates around the Hampton Downs Motorsport Park Racetrack, this weekend has an epic load of entertainment for anyone who has petrol running through their veins or a rev head addiction! Premier Events run an incredible weekend with this event, just like all the other events they run up and down the country. The big draw card for the burnout fraternity with this event was two guaranteed spots to compete over in Australia at Summernats 2025, which most certainly brought the big guns out to play with that chance on the table. The weekend kicks off on the Friday arvo with track cruising on the main race track and drifting and burnouts over on the back field track. This is an awesome time to get organised, catch up with mates and get ready to ROCK the weekend as when Saturday kicks off, everywhere you look is all go! The car park area instantly turns into a hard park show. The garages are buzzin
with cars rolling in and out and hitting the track to get amongst the action out there. The wet pad is alive with people testing their skills drifting the wet, smooth concrete around placed traffic cones. This is supposedly a time trial but there was definitely a fun time as well as a time trial going on with some crack-up donut sessions when the plan goes pear shaped. The drift circuit action is full-noise over the back which is an awesome spectacle to take in while you are watching the cars rolling around the main track right in front of you. The burnout pad next door is open for anyone to roll on in to test ‘n tune before the main event later in the day or just have a play. Back in the hard park area, trade stalls for all sorts of performance parts ranging
from suspension to engine parts, food and clothing stalls were busy with the crowd wandering through sussing it all out. Cars lining up to hit the track next with a series of different sessions for hot rod and muscle, rotary and alike plus an invitational speed session for the builds that fitted the criteria. These events are awesome for the massive selection of builds that roll in. It’s always impressive to see what engines can be slotted in to a different engine bay. Turbo chargers as big as the engines set to throw flames and shred tyres turning what would be a standard shopping basket into a hell track car to hang onto! All this action is contained to Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, but just down the road at the NAPA Auto Parts Dragway Meremere, the drag racing and burnout
action is just starting to get sorted for the big evening of action including a massive fireworks display to finish the night off. From mid afternoon on the Saturday, cars start rolling into the drag strip to start getting sorted for the burnout prelims to see who will be in the nights big action competition. The action at the prelims is pretty damn crazy to start with. It’s not like anyone wants to miss out on getting through to the nights entertainment, so it’s balls-out on the pad to prove a point. Sambo with his supercharged V8 RX7 managed to fully scorch the rear bumper during his session melting it to the point of no return in a blaze of flames but still kept it alive to get through to the finals. Fats Nichol rocked his session kicking off with a massive tip in with his crazy V8 Starlet screaming its guts out to impress
the judges enough to win “Best Tip-in”, and that was just in the prelim action! Soon after the burnouts prelim was finished, the drag racing kicked off with the crowd moving across from Hampton Downs to start lining up to battle it out down the strip. Once again, this is impressive to see the variety of cars that can battle it out together. Between the full-on torque and grunt of the V8’s launching down the strip, the turbo and nitros snorting fours and rotaries are up there when they start screaming with some good quarter mile times being posted The four-wheel drive Skylines are impressive to watch lose traction launching down the strip and when all four grip, they’re outta there for sure! As the sky darkened and the strip lights
came on to the finish of the drag racing action, the excitement for the burnout finals built with the selected cars rolling up to line up and head down the strip towards the purpose-built burnout pad and the awaiting crowd, building in numbers on the bank overlooking the action. In true Premier Events style, loud music jams out to the crowd with the build up of excitement as the first car rolls into the tip-in lane ready to make a show. Fire canons shooting flames high into the sky with the competitor’s choice of music jamming out to the crowd as they shred down the tip-in lane and chuck it full noise into the pad creating as much smoke as possible. Burnouts aren’t just about making the rear tyres smoke though. The points come from a display of control, amount of smoke, coverage of the pad as in getting into every corner while smoking them

rears to the point of blowing them off the rims. Preferably in about a minute thirty to two minutes, gaining as many points as possible in that time. But you still have to drive off the pad, preferably not on fire when you’re done, which is a big call after beating the crap out of it for that time. There’s also the deduction of points for hitting any of the pad walls or having to reverse which is always the killer for winning the competition. The Meremere breeze on this occasion was non-existent with the tyre smoke enveloping the pad, loosing the drivers vision of where to head next, leaving only landmarks like the light towers to head for as safe country to keep on shredding them tyres. Smoke, sparks from the bare rims still spinning on the tarmac, flames and screaming engines with glowing red exhausts in the darkness along with the music and fire plumes bursting into the
Rolly Lemin smoked the pad with an awesome burnout to please the crowd
night sky makes this event an absolute massively cool event to get amongst! Photographing and videoing is a mission with the smoke cover lingering and the dark light but such a cool event to capture for sure with the glowing exhausts and flames of unused fuel bursting from the exhaust! With a Summernats entry up for the taking no one was holding back and the action was insanely cool! Leon Kenny with “TAINTED” his blown Holden Ute purpose built for these occasions took out the win fully shredding both rear tyres and keeping off the walls by heading for the said light towers to stay out of trouble. With all the drivers going so hard to win the comp. Leon didn’t even realise himself that his burnout was going to make him champion of the night, winning him an instant entry to Summernats to compete against the Aussies.
Braden Smith with “HAUNTU” grabbed the second spot with his blown Holden Wagon shredding the tyres to the point of catching fire with the rubber build up underneath on the way off the pad. The South Island competitors put on a massive show with their burnouts to have a crack at the prize as well, unfortunately not taking it away but impressing the crowd no end to make the most of the weekend. The night ended with the prizegiving for the burnout entrants before a massive fireworks display to top the nights entertainment off before everyone rolled in Sunday morning to get amongst it all again. These events by Premier Events are just massive and a credit to how they can organise such a great weekend. If you want a weekend where you can get to play hard with your ride, then definitely GET AMONSGT!

AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR CLUB’S
Father’s Day Drags 2024
What an awesome day of drag racing in the old school style of flag drop drag racing! The Father’s Day Drags is one of my favorite meets of the year at the NAPA Auto Parts Dragway in Meremere. Because it’s not part of the points series, everything seems to come out of the cave to have a play at the drag strip, making for an awesome day of fun-as casual racing! This meet is for post 1948 American and Aussie V8’s only which makes for an awesome selection of cool cars to check out and watch race. This is one of those meets that bring people out from far and wide, filling the stands and the hillside to catch the action. Despite the rain causing the postponement of the drags on the actual Father’s Day, the turnout was still awesome for the rain date set two weeks later.
It was pretty dodgy that that date was actually going to happen as well with a storm ripping through the area the day and night before race day. Unfortunately, the storm came through with a belt of lightening, taking out the timing lights and sensors, but this was only to be found out at race time. With a burnout competition set for the lunchtime break sponsored by BurgerFuel. The days timetable got swapped around while the technical team had a crack at sorting the timing situation out. With a thousand dollars up for grabs for the best burnout, it was game on with four serious contenders lining up to shred their rear tyres to impress the crowd and run away with the cash to buy some more tyres.
Garreth Karrasch in the BNN customs Commodore threw down an awesome challenge for the cash but Ramo Simpson threw the Grim Reaper keys to Mathew Busing to go show the crowd what he could do in the fully blown one tonne Holden Ute, and DANG he put on a show! Taking away the BurgerFuel onethousand-dollar prize in a full cloud of smoke! After a bit of time keeping the crowd busy, it was decided the timing lights were not going to come back to life for the day and the decision was made to turn the day into a “Flag drop” drag race meeting. I actually love the idea! Yes, you lose the data and the closeness of accuracy of not having the timing system. BUT you just can’t beat taking it back to the good ole drag racing days of a flag drop start and no head starts! The crowd in the grandstands certainly enjoyed the day staying till the very end race to watch Darren Carlton in the 73 Corvette battle it out with Jay Maka in the Holden Torana for some awesome wheel standing action off the start line.
The track itself warmed up quite nicely throughout the day, so even without the timing, you could tell there was some fast-moving cars and some top end speeds happening down the quarter. The other awesome thing about the Father’s Day Drags is the car park and pit area gets filled with cool-as rides rolling in just to park up for the day and get amongst the action. The back field becomes a hot rod and muscle car show all by itself making for an awesome wander around under the trees when there’s a break in the racing. The whole Dragway has a nostalgic feel going on which is really cool! It’s not just the olds-cool that come out to play though. Modern V8 cars are also included in the days racing with late model GT Falcons, Camaro’s, Dodges and Mustangs lining up to battle it out over the quarter which is awesome to watch to see the comparison between the brands. With just the one incident to stop racing for a short time, the days racing went very well in the simple flag drop style. Only a
Gareth Karrasch throwing down an awesome burnout
couple of re-runs were required when the finish was too tight to tell and Andrew Schooling’s Camaro having an argument with a concrete barrier were the only unplanned happenings. The team at Meremere Dragway are awesome at running these events. The action doesn’t stop which makes for a cool day! For a street style drag race meet, the caliber of cars rolling up to the start line was very impressive! By the number of cars lifting the front wheels off the tarmac, it was easy to see which ones were the sneaky sleepers with a bottle of NOS in the boot. Even without the time clock, you could tell they were fast down that quarter! This is such an awesome day to hit the track! The Father’s Day Drags is a compulsory on my event list! The action is awesome and the collection of cool cars rolling is just as awesome! Definitely get it on your “to do list” if it’s not already on there!
