WOW!! What a month this has been. It’s been exciting, busy, crazy and a heap of fun for sure! Even though I was the most knacked I’ve ever been after covering an event! Honestly, my feet were killing me and the body just wanted to lay down on the Monday after the EPIC weekend at the Prowear Chrome Horsepower Festival run by Premier events.

Check out our video coverage on our YouTube channel

They certainly know how to run an epic weekend event!

On the Octane front, we have made awesome progress with Jessica from Blissful Photography with our brand-new show “Tauranga Motorfest”. Our awesome sponsors Chemz and Mount Shop have jumped on board with goodies to give away along with a couple more sponsors like Wayne from Doctor Cuts donating his time with an awesome three thousand dollar car finishing package plus an eight hundred dollar polishing job to be done at the show. We are going to raffle these off, so watch this space on those awesome prizes from Doctor Cuts. It has honestly been humbling how random people have jumped on board with our Show to help get Jessica and Myself to Summernats to cover the action there for the magazine, Youtube and Facebook pages. We are fully going to GET AMONGST the action there with a massive edition of Octane Fix covering all the events from the Top 60 Show ‘n Shine to the Burnouts when we get back.

If you like what we do and would like to back us as well, feel free to drop me a line and throw whatever ideas you might have to help get us there. We are always keen for more sponsors as it’s not a cheap trip this one! There’s more details on the show further in the book here, so check it out and come along to join in the show or just browse the cars on display. There’ll be random giveaways and prizes for the ones that jump in to help the cause. On the show front, it’s been a little quiet which has given me an awesome chance to get stuck into the Coupe again. Things are progressing there so hopefully you’ll be seeing that in the not too distant future!

the Whakatane Rod and Custom Clubs Spring Fling which is always a funny day wandering around the area. So there’s definitely no excuses to not be out there doing it and driving the wheels off your ride. Miles of smiles I call it! So GET AMONGST this action packed issue and check what’s been happening and scribble the 4th of November in your diary to come along to the Tauranga Crossing Mall Carpark to support us with the Tauranga Motorfest Show. It’s going to be awesome!! Cheers all, enjoy this issue and we’ll see you out there doing it!

Giggles (aka Bogan)

We’ve managed to grab a few feature cars to photograph for upcoming issues so watch this space for an unreal build that will blow your mind with the effort gone into this show winner! The drag racing and burnout season is coming around fast so we’ll be flat out covering those again soon. Watch our Facebook page for the flyers for those events and jump into the back of this book for events coming up soon as well. Summer’s just around the corner, so it will be all-go again real soon!

Photo credit goes to the awesome Rod Dunn from Creative Auto Photography

We have massive coverage of the entire weekend, further in this issue, covering the track action through to the nighttime burnouts and massive fireworks display.

There’s a couple of mystery rally events coming up as well in the Bay of Plenty with the Pukehina Surf ‘n Sand Poker Run and

PUKEHINA SURF ‘N SAND AUTORAMA 2023

! n u s e th in y a What an awe some d Holy, what an awesome summers day Stu and the team put on to show what the Pukehina Surf ‘n Sand Autorama is all about! With a move to a new venue at the Pukehina School out in the countryside. The returning supporters from the previous shows at the beach turned up in droves to get behind this awesome event again, raising funds for the local emergency services and the Pukehina Surf Life Saving Club. The new venue proved absolutely awesome with a heap of space for cars to gleam in the sunshine and trees for people to gather in the shade, kicking back enjoying the local band “Wing it” cranking out good ole kiwi tunes. In good ole fashion market type settings, around 55 food and craft stalls were set up trading their goods and feeding the masses with a huge variety of food and

drinks, which was awesome because it was a scorching hot day. The ice cream trucks were crazy busy trying to keep up as the day went on. The cars started to roll into the school way before kick-off and it was obvious this was going to be an awesome show of olds-cool rides. The entertainment was in full swing early with the live band and a couple of startups from the “Blast from the past” funny car to get the smiles on! The back field of the school was chockablock with around three hundred and fifty Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Classics and even the odd Vintage Car rolling in to fill the area in no time.

About 40 Classic Bikes were lined up under the trees with everyone in the shade as well. The bonus with these community shows is the variety of vehicles that come along. Everything from trucks to low riders and everything in between making an awesome show to just wander around admiring the different styles. The road outside the school started to resemble a Hot Rod Show by itself with a heap of public rolling up to check the show out and get amongst the scene. Sun umbrellas seem to be the theme for the day but they were certainly needed. It made for an awesome atmosphere though, as if kicking back at a fair or

down the beach surrounded by a heap of cool cars and people just relaxing, enjoying themselves at the park. Gazebo’s, picnic baskets and chilly bins appeared from car boots all around and the picnic at the park idea was on! Even a good ole tug-of-war was on with the Fire Brigade battling out the honors with the Surf Life Saving Club. The Life Savers taking out the win on this one with a few locals jumping in to make it so. Being a fundraiser event, heaps of goods were gifted to the cause from local businesses to be auctioned off at the show to help raise funds. Awesome prizes from tools to game gear were up for grabs. The local support for this show is absolutely amazing and shows the enthusiasm in this beach community to just get behind, stuck in and make it happen. A massive sum of twenty five thousand dollars was raised after expenses to donate back into these community organizations, which is an outstanding effort and fully shows the support the team have from the locals and surrounding businesses! This is the third Autorama Show the team have run with each getting bigger and bigger. I’m picking by the cars that were lined up outside due to the field being full already will have the team pretty excited to expand the show even bigger next time. Make sure you watch out for the dates for the show next year and make a trip out to this awesome spot in the Bay of Plenty paradise.

BURGERFUEL’S

1965 DODGE CORONET Straight off the 60’s strip

How cool are these Dodge Coronets for a shape straight out of the sixties. Sharp lines, pillarless doors and lots of shiny trim taking on the space race theme that attracted so many buyers! The Dodge Coronet actually did seven generations of builds starting way back in 1949 right through to 1976 when the Dodge Charger Sport kicked-in to take over.

If you ask me, Dodge have always gone “YEHAA” with their cars, throwing tuff-as engines into production cars to just go kick the butt off their competitors. Good attitude, in my opinion! Haha

The Coronet name went from the top of the line Dodge to the family cruiser and even a drag racing model set up as if a gasser with the front and rear wheel centres moved forward to throw the weight back onto the rear tyres and lift them front wheels off the ground. I mean how cool is that for a production car!

This gorgeous Coronet 440 of BurgerFuel’s here is certainly a fine example of the 60’s models. The hardtop body shape giving it the ready-to-race appeal but with the split bench seat styling up front giving the cruiser feel of cruising the strip of a sleepy town on a Friday night to the local burger

bar looking for mischief like a two lane blacktop movie. The long rectangular speedometer taking up a fair chunk of the dash space with the big mile per hours numbers reaching up to 120mph just to tempt you to try the growly ole V8 up front out. The cloth trim throughout emphasising the comfort of the Dodge styling. This ride here was shipped in from Australia so has the extra luxury of air-conditioning built in as well. Winding

down the window is the air-conditioning system most common in these rides around NZ, so that was a real bonus. The car itself was used for an Australian franchise of BurgerFuel having the custom three tone fade away BurgerFuel paint finish completed in Australia before being shipped to New Zealand to join the team of cool rides here representing the companies ties to the Classic and Muscle Car scene. The stunning mix of colours glistens in the sunlight as it changes from a deep purple to blue as your eye moves over the lines of the body reflecting the light from each colour to catch your eye in a different way each time you wander around the car. While retaining its factory street and race appeal, there have been a few

tricks to make sure it stands up for the Dodge name. The 440ci engine up front complete with MSD Ignition and a few other tricks is backed by the tricked automatic transmission with a B&M Pro Rachet shifter on the floor to get the power to them rear wheels when required. You can certainly imagine what the Drag version of these models were like back

in the sixties looking for mischief! BurgerFuel rightfully pride themselves on their rides representing the company and franchises. Everything about this company fits just right in the Muscle Car scene with Vika looking after the rides to make sure everything is above spec to show the expectation of performance in this scene of ours.

Q&A: So how long have you owned the car? 5 years Where did you find it, import or around NZ? Bought in Australia for our Australian crew to cruise around in Did you buy the car as is or build it? Bought and modified to our taste What car would you like to test drive? Anything stupidly fast and loud! Any other cool cars in the shed? At HQ we have a ‘72 Ford Fairmont, 1972 Buick Riviera and a Plymouth GTX Favourite style of car ie; Coupe or wagon etc? We do love a Coupe but anything in the muscle era Favourite band / singer to go cruising with on the stereo? Whatever we have playing on Radio BurgerFuel! Are you involved in any car clubs (name of clubs)? We host many clubs at BurgerFuel stores around the country

Anything else you would like to add …. Our ’65 Dodge is parked safely at HQ with the number plate BKFIRE, named after one of BurgerFuel’s most popular burgers, the Backfire. With a 440-stroke engine and auto drag gearbox, this 2 door pillarless coupe can move and showcases the iconic custom 3-tone fadeaway pearl paint job. The BurgerFuel fleet is made up of customs, classics and muscle cars built in ‘the muscle car era’ between 1965 and 1972 and, like our burgers, they are all customised in some special way and branded in our iconic trademark 3-tone fade pearl paint job. Our burger names pay homage to all things cars, from the Bacon Backfire, V8 Vegan and Ford Freakout, to the American Muscle and Burnout. And a glance back at the menu from the early days show we’ve always been keen on a bit of word play, with burger names like Chicknition Pear, Studnut Stilton and Pontiac Pickle and our latest the Jalapeno Hornet.

PROWEAR CHROME HORSEPOWER FESTIVAL ! e 2023 r tu n e v d A C I P Most E Holy, if you ever want a full-on weekend of automobile action, GET AMONGST the Prowear Chrome Horsepower Festival experience! It truly is a festival of expressing everything auto related that involves the passion that emits in the car scene with the creations we build! It fully is a “bring what you got” atmosphere here. Everything from your Hot Rod, classic driver to retro fitted late model mechanicals in an old body to American, Australian Muscle and import Rotary builds rolled for this weekend. But don’t be thinking it’s just for the oldschool either, even late model McLarens, Porches and Lamborghini’s get amongst the scene here to have a play on the track!

discipline you’re into in the car scene, there is something over the weekend that will make you want to go “hell yeah, I’m in!” Even if you don’t have your ride there, or you just want to jump in someone else’s for an experience, you can wander up to the Taxi Stand and jump in with anyone who wants to take you for a few laps around the track.

If you have a passion for performance and a rev-head lurking inside you, you’ll fit right in with this crowd.

Held at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park in the Waikato, this event cranks up on the Friday with registrations and scrutineering before hitting the track for some fun cruising. The Drift Circuit is also open over the back for the keen drifters to get out for a skid session and the Burnout Pad is also open for anyone looking to shred some tyres before the big Burnout sessions on the Saturday.

At this event, everyone comes together to get their toys out for a play! What-ever

You would think that being the day before most turn up for the weekend that it

would be quiet and cruisy, but hell no! It’s all go as soon as you rock in! The atmosphere is rocking with the tracks filling with action before your eyes and it’s only just begun! This carry’s on until pretty much dark. The flames shooting from exhausts is an impressive sight when watching over the track from above as groups of cars drop into the tight right hander before powering on for the short straight away from the pit area. Saturday is the big day for this event. Cranking back into it on the tracks at 9am, the sound of performance vehicles of all varieties filling the air with revs is a cool way to start the day! The drift track and cruising was in full swing before the Jacanna burnout pad opened along with the gymkhana pad for

some time trial events around a coned track on the concrete while sprayed with water to throw some extra skills levels in to check out.

to test the cars on the track who look to be that extra level.

call thinking you were going to blitz it on the road! hahaha I love that!

If you weren’t out on the tracks, the car park and pit area were awesome places to get amongst.

The open cruising is an awesome chance to see how the different builds perform. From the torque monsters to the top end screamers and them European animals showing what they are made of!

Like a hard park full of custom and performance vehicles everywhere. From late model European sports animals to fully blown V8’s and turbo builds to check out, the variety at this show is awesome.

To really test them out, a roll racing session was held for two cars at a time to roll up to a start line together, then battle it out down the straight to see who was the quickest, both off the mark and at the end.

The action wasn’t just contained to the Hampton Downs Motorsport Park either. Just down the road at the NAPA Auto Parts Dragway Meremere the action was kicking off with the qualifying of the Burnout sessions for the big show coming up after the action finished at Hampton Downs.

I took my Coupe to the very first Chrome event many years back when it was solely V8 builds and I think there were only around two hundred cars there. This event has now evolved opening the doors to any performance build to rock in and the numbers are now massive. With so much going on to check out or get amongst, it still flows really well with different cruising sessions for Hot Rod and Muscle, ladies only and an invite only speed session to the ones wanting

I tell you what though, you wouldn’t have guess that a people mover with some hell Turbo set up would completely blow away what you would think are fast builds. I honestly couldn’t believe watching this thing destroy a fastlooking Skyline at first, but the camera doesn’t lie! That people mover is fast and took out a fair few fast cars!!!! It cracked me right up watching that going on. It would definitely be embarrassing and a wakeup

This event was out of the bag for lil ole NZ. Premier Events has teamed up with Summernats in Australia to take the Top four Burnout entrants to Australia to compete against the Aussies at Summernats 2024. This excitement drew a massive entrant list with some big builds rolling up to take on the challenge. NZ has a cool burnout scene, with a good amount of events to get along to for people to test their cars and develop their skills on the pad. The turnout at this event was massive with that prize up for grabs.

Straight after these qualifying sessions to see who the top thirty would be for the night time final burnouts, the drag strip was opened for some awesome drag racing of once again, “bring what you got” racing. It has certainly been a long time since I’ve seen the Meremere drag strip hill and stands so full of spectators getting amongst to check out the action. There’s definitely some fast builds rolling our streets out there. When you see a Lamborghini roll up to the start line to take on a blown V8 or Turbo rotary, you would obviously think, here goes the Lambo to the finish line first, but mate, there was some close racing for sure! Once again, this is awesome to see the difference in the builds as to what torque and Revs can produce time wise down that quarter mile. If you spotted the white HQ Holden “THEQUE” lining up a few times, you would’ve noticed the consistency of 10 second quarter miles coming from that blown late model Q, along with the smiles and smoking tyres that thing can produce!

Eventually taking out the bragging rights of winning the drag racing part of the event. That’s a cool ride for sure with some push you back in your seat torque. Along with the straight-out bragging rights of being the quickest, teams were also involved in the drag racing, collecting points from runs as the night went on. The “Obsolete Car Club” took out the NZ Car Club Drags prize with “Hard N Fast” next up, followed by the “Girls in Motorsport New Zealand Team” in the third spot. Next up was the draw card for the Burnout contenders. The finals of the burnout competition to see just who would be heading to Aussie. Premier events went right out with this show creating not just a Burnout comp,

but a spectacular event to watch and get amongst. With thirty cars lined up to cruise down the drag strip to the burnout pad, they had just one chance to go hard or go home! There was going to be no mucking around when hitting the pad here! Rolling up to tip in lane with a sound track of their own choice boosting through the P.A. speakers to get the atmosphere rockin, then heading down the pad funnel with tyres smoking hard and flames shooting high into the night sky beside them to fully send it with a tip in and take on the pad to put on the best show possible. This event was a full-on show from rev head heaven. Unbelievably the weather for the entire weekend was incredibly still and clear which on the Saturday night for the burnouts, left the smoke lingering

on the pad making for an awesome spectacular show with the flames and lights but leaving drivers in the smoke not knowing which way to turn. Those that found their way out to cover the pad and gain the points certainly made the most of it with some awesome Burnout action going on. From big blown V8 engines to huge turbo screaming rotaries, it was all on with flames shooting from exhausts and red hot manifolds glowing in the dark of night amongst the smoke and sparks flying from tyres shredding on the pad. With a few cars finding the walls and a couple of engines bursting into flames at maximum revs, the night was certainly an awesome evening of entertainment already. After the thirty competitors had done their best to impress the Australian

judge, it was time to find out just who had done enough. With a cool prizegiving for all involved including the Premier Event staff and volunteers, the top four burnout drivers were named. Ryan Shirtcliffe with his screaming turbo charged six cylinder Mitsi “VIOLENT”, Branden Smith with his big blown V8 Holden Commodore wagon “HANTU”, Garrett Mattews with his Blown V8 one tonner Holden ute “DSPRNG” and Liz Gracie with her incredibly cool sounding screaming blown V8 69 Camaro “EVIL69” charged through to grab the top four placings with the prize of being taken to Summernats 2024 to battle it out with the Aussies. Encouragement Awards also went to Arnie Donaldson, Ramo Simpson and Hayden Wilby with the

“Best Tip In” to Reece Smith. As if all this excitement and entertainment wasn’t enough, Premiers cranked up a Big Boy fifteen-minute massive fireworks display to fully WOW the crowd and finish the night off. This was definitely one of the biggest days I’ve had the fun of covering at a car event. At around thirteen hours on nonstop high performance automobile action, this day was honestly sooo cool, even if my feet were killing me! Sunday and we were straight back into it at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park again. The drift track, open burnout pad and track cruising was all go again. The gymkhana on the wet pad was in full swing as well with some awesome time trail action going on. Sunday arvo brought on the roll racing

and power skid sessions drawing a huge crowd to the hill overlooking the straight on the cruising track. The entire weekend fully ROCKED with nonstop action with something for everyone for sure! If you haven’t hit a Premier Events event before, definitely GET AMONGST and rock in to make the most of it. There’s so much going on you’ll have a grin on all day in Rev head heaven! They really do run an awesome event! They are running another Chrome event in Christchurch in March 2024 then back to Hampton Downs Motorsport Park later on, so make sure you GET AMONGST!
