WOW, does it feel like winter has come or what? Gezz, we are full noise into that time of the year when rolling around in our old cars without a descent heater seems crazy, BUT we still love it don’t we! The show scene has certainly kicked back into it with a vengeance. We have managed to catch a fair bit going on around the country lately. From club runs with mystery rallies to show ’n shines and swap meets, it’s all been happening in the scene and it’s awesome!

The winter weather certainly didn’t dampen any of the laughs and festivities and the turn out both events was awesome!! These two events have been going for years and years now, so if you haven’t made it along to one of them yet, scribble them on your “to do list” for sure! The swap meet scene is certainly kicking off again now too. They are definitely more than just swap meets though. More of an excuse to get the toys out and make a run of it now which is great to see.

Apart from roaring around the country with the camera’s, I managed to grab some time to get into the coupe as well. It certainly feels awesome to get back into the cave working on the ole girl again. The new engine got a kick in the guts and a fire up so it won’t be long now until them wheels are turning again. Well, that’s the plan anyway, haha we all know how the plan goes don’t we! I must say a HUGE thanks to everyone who has kicked in and shared our online posts as well. It’s awesome to see that the ole exponential curve with the numbers is now kicking in and things are really starting to roll. Thank you all SOOO much! I probably can’t express enough my appreciation for the support, backing and encouragement we are getting. It is truly humbling, and I thank you sooo much!

noise again with a couple of firsts in here. The first ever Thunder Hop weekend and Cloudy’s Take with our first cover of the Wild Bunch drag racing. Make sure you watch the video, there’s some seriously cool action in there! I’m fully stoked to have Andrew and Pete as part of the magazine! I sooo love old school drag racing! Anyway, enough of me rambling! GET AMONGST!!!! Cheers, Giggles (aka Bogan)

Last month I managed to catch the annual Bay Rodders Winterblast weekend as well as the Sulphur City Hot Rod Club’s weekend with the Toy Shed open day and swap meet on the Sunday. What an awesome couple of weekends they were.

Huh, speaking of being “humble”, check out our feature car in here called “The Humbler” by the manufacturer. Isn’t that a confident way of taking on the competition! Back in the day eh! So this issue is full

Thunder Hop

AT HOT WATER BEACH Get amongst this awesome weekend at one of New Zealand’s most iconic places to be.

between members of the group, who also had Hot Rods and Classics sitting in their sheds at home.

If you haven’t ventured up the Coromandel Peninsular before, then Hot Water Beach is a spot you should definitely scribble on your “to -do” list when you do.

The idea of making a full weekend out of a car show is something we’ve always been keen on, so holding it at an awesome Top Ten Campground where everyone can drag their retro caravans along to, or just roll up and take over a cabin for the weekend is an awesome idea.

This is the very first running of the awesome Thunder Hop weekends put together by the “NZ Motorhome Travel Group”. The idea to run a weekend full of entertainment and a heap of cool oldscool cars came about after a few yarns

As we all know, when someone says “let’s get the toys out” it’s all go, and the old saying of “set the date and they will come” certainly happened here.

It means the weekend can simply evolve. The relaxed atmosphere to kick back and enjoy the time with your mates, get out for a cruise around the coast or even

walk down to the beach, dig a hole in the sand, laze in your own natural hot water spa and watch the waves roll in is an awesome way to have a chilled weekend. The NZMTG certainly didn’t leave the entertainment to just ourselves though. Friday night was a meet and greet in the camp lounge giving an awesome chance for everyone to catch up, and also meet others who had rolled in for the weekend. Saturday was Show Day and although the weather gods had been playing havoc all week with storms ripping through the area. The show still managed to go ahead with the Saturday fining up and the sun coming out to dry the place out for everyone to kick back and enjoy chilling out on the field surrounded by cool ole Hot Rods, Muscle cars and Classics.

The variety of cars was awesome, and it was great to see new cars to the scene from group members joining in as well. Unlike most shows where it all ends mid-afternoon, there was no need to rush off home as we were actually already at home. The bonus being, you could wander off back to your cabin or caravan to do whatever and then get amongst again. About now was when the extra entertainment started to kick in for the evening. A static inflation of a hot air balloon gave anyone who dared the new experience of running around inside an actual balloon, now that’s not something you do everyday! Food vendors set up to cater for the evenings events dealing out pizza’s galore along with burgers etc. before the flames really kicked off. First up was the inflation of another giant hot air balloon right on dusk. As the darkness fell, the flame and laser light

show began. Lighting up the balloon from inside and out, choreographed to the epic sounds of AC/DC jamming out over the loudspeakers. After that was a friendly competition for fire dancers. This was awesome to watch with some very cool choreography going on with the use of fire balls and battens. I mean, what rev-head doesn’t like flames and AC/DC, that’s a winner for sure! Back in the camp site, the light show continued with an awesome display among the retro caravans, including a few motorhomes and buses to really crank the show up! The campground looked as if it was amongst a Christmas festival with some amazing displays set up to have you thinking it was a winter wonderland while having a wander about. Back on the field, the live music kicked off and a massive bonfire was set alight to set the beachy kick-back mood going for the evening.

Sunday morning rolled around far too quick, but not too early luckily. Towards midday a cruise was organised into Whitianga to a local tavern for lunch and chill session wandering around the little beach side town for those who wanted. Being a long weekend with the monday a public holiday, there was no need to rush off, so another cruisy night was onboard for those who wanted to gather in the camp lounge again. I can certainly see these weekends catching on with the NZMTG group. Being held in the Top Ten campgrounds means everything is on hand weather you are caravaning or grabbing a cabin. Having the entertainment on site certainly makes for a relaxed fun filled weekend and a great base for tiki touring around the area if you want to go exploring. Jump onto their website if you’re keen to catch the next weekend, they are well worth getting amongst!

Gang 34 PLY ster MOUTH BRUCE

I fully love the shape of these Plymouth sedans. With the same body shape as the tudors, these four suicide door sedans look like they have come straight out of a Bonnie and Clyde movie. You would fully expect to see a violin case laying on the back seat or a bloke standing on the running board looking dapper in a fedora hat waving a machine gun around. I’m not sure if Bruce has either of those, but when he gets behind that steering wheel, opens the exhaust gates and plants his foot to kick that big block Mopar into action, he definitely takes on the gangster stance! These cool old wagons are built to have the roof chopped and dumped to the ground. The body style sits perfect for a Hot Rod and the suicide doors take us right back to the beginning of hot rodding itself. The smooth curves of the flowing guards wide enough to sit a nice set of feet

under and not look out of place at all. The custom finish of the bonnet with the fins along the top matching perfectly with the factory fins along the side of the engine cowls. The beautiful curve in the huge grill flowing together with the side fenders giving an aerodynamic, yet classy look to the front, accentuating the big chrome headlights protruding above each guard. The designers in the day certainly designed classy looking cars for the affluent. Back when you could consider cars as auto-art for sure. Back in 1934, this model here was considered the best engineered car in its class, featuring independent front suspension, 4 wheel hydraulic brakes, a full pressured and filtered engine oil system, and rubber engine mounts (floating power) as standard equipment. Doesn’t that “floating power” sound cool! Of course, the original engine didn’t last long in this build. Sitting proudly

CAIRD’S

in that engine bay now is a Big Block 383 Chrysler Mopar kicking back to an automatic transmission for cruising. I mean, what else would you drop into a build like this? The saying “Mopar or no car” springs to mind, and everyone loves a Mopar! The thump from the twin exhaust of these big breathing engines is truly music to the ears. There is a stereo fitted here, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t get turned on as much as the exhaust gate openers do. Inside, the interior is reupholstered with button velvet with the custom seats matching the door cards and side trims. It actually sits perfectly with the era and style yet giving a comfortable ride making for an awesome cruiser. The dark pearl paint resembles the original look of these styley black sedans from a distance, but brings it into the modern era of a show worthy Hot Rod with its custom finish reflecting the

different colours of the pearl in the sunlight as it rolls around the curves of the body. The blue-dot tail lights almost matching the colour of the pearl paint to lift the mystic of the colour. The style, sound and stance of this ride fully represents the Hot Rod world in an awesomely worthy way. Sitting in those front seats with the top of the windscreen at your eye height, tiny side windows and a rumbling Mopar ready to make the ole gurl jump is an awesome place to be. I can certainly see why Bruce smiles as soon as he see’s his Hot Rod.

H C N U B D L I THE W Like the OutLaw 71 Series, the Wild Bunch is introducing a new way of looking at the New Zealand drag racing scene with its “put on a show and the crowds will follow” attitude. With the racer returns format nobody really loses as they return in the next round, so everyone’s favorite car from a fans perspective will run again. Points are gathered and the winner progresses into the “winners bracket” while the loser drops down onto a “losers bracket”. Here’s an in-depth look into the Wild Bunch put together by Ryan. Straight from the desk of Ryan Sheldon: The words ‘Wild Bunch’ bring to mind images and memories of a bygone era, a time when gas was cheap, racing was fun and grandstands and race fields were full. Somewhere over time we all got lost, ‘Wild Bunch’ as a class got swallowed up

and spat out, morphed into other classes which led to a hell of a lot of cars and drivers being left without a class they were competitive in, until now that is. Formed a few seasons back ‘Wild Bunch NZ’ has not only brought a bunch of those cars and drivers back from the wilderness, but brought back a fun and exciting element to drag racing, along the same lines as the wildly successful example set by the boys and girls of the Outlaw71 class. With fields constantly in the 16-20 car range, the class packs the pits and grandstands whenever an event is on and with a wide variety of sedan bodied cars ranging from a crazy supercharged alcohol breathing Ferrari to a wild cartoonish VW bug, all running within the 6.99 to 7.99 range. The action is always fast and exciting and it’s a class where you are rewarded as much for the “show’” you put on as opposed to winning the actual event. It’s combatants indulge in as much banter and pre-race shenanigans as they can get away with, which makes the whole

class just as much a family as a bunch of racers. Season 2023 for the ‘Wild Bunch’, proudly sponsored by Mountshop kicks off in January at Masterton Motorplex, stops off at Meremere Dragway in February and then returns for the monster of an event that is “MAYHEM at Masterton” which pits ‘Wild Bunch’ against the aforementioned Outlaw71 crew for all the bragging rights over winter. From wild smokey burnouts to out of control passes and close side by side action, Wild Bunch offers a little something for everyone. They even sell colouring books and teddy bears in their merch tent on site at all events to keep the little ones amused. So make it a plan to attend at least one event this summer, you won’t be disappointed! Cheers

TheBRENTHumbler & ADRIENNE CAMPBELL’S

1970 PONTIAC GTO This stunningly good restoration here is definitely the ‘Red Pearl’ of the Campbell’s cave.

of letting you know that they weren’t mucking around, the rev counter is mounted directly in front of the driver’s eyes on top of the bonnet in a moulded aerodynamic housing blending into that gorgeous long bonnet.

These GTO Pontiac’s have been a favourite muscle car of mine since I can’t even remember!

I must say, GM are pretty damn good at styling their muscle cars. This is just one of the three stunningly well restored GM muscle’s in the Campbell cave.

The long sleek bonnet starting from the protruding aerodynamic nose cone splitting the recessed grill, to the twin vents rising up above the bonnet to sit level with the nose cone swage running up the bonnet is simply gorgeous. The roof flowing back over the rare quarters to that aeroplane style wing sitting proudly over the boot lid fully stepping it into the staunch muscle car era of the seventies. To top this all off with no hesitation

We have already featured their extremely rare Stage 1 GS Buick in Issue 09 and their glistening blue SS Nova in Issue 10. Both cars having been fully restored to factory condition and better in most parts. The battle in the muscle car world between the manufacturers in the early seventies was awesome I reckon. Neither manufacturer would back down and certainly made it known when they had built a car that was going to kick butt against the others.

The nick names the builders gave their cars was simply awesome, no political correctness at all was considered, men were men and pansies were flowers in the seventies. Names like “The Judge” spring to mind but this Pontiac here was named “The Humbler” and came with a full-on advertising campaign aimed at letting the buyer know they were going to play in the big league buying one of these. They not only came with that staunch muscle car look, but a 400ci, 350hp twin ram air engine complete with a switch to open the exhausts gates to let the casual opponent at the traffic lights know “The Humbler” was there. I mean, just because they pull up next to you doesn’t mean they want to race, but better to be safe than a loser! GM advertising department actually spent the money producing an ad to play at half

time during the Superbowl on National television, advertising “The Humbler” with its exhaust gates open and a young man trying to find a street-race, but no one was prepared to take him on. GM’s upper management ordered the ad off air and subsequently deleted this option after only playing the ad once. Such a waste of an awesome option for the later models!

Give me the dirt… MAKE/MODEL:

1970 Pontiac GTO

COLOUR:

Red Pearl

ENGINE:

Factory 400ci Pontiac

These GTO’s were fully set up to hit the track and tour the country in style. A GM employee in the early days of the GTO’s actually had a car homologated by the FIA in 1964 for an occasional race, so GM followed along to what you see today with the GTO’s.

The engine has been rebuilt, around 2015-16 as near as I can tell, the standard engines had 350hp but this has had a few improvements so not sure what it is now.

The interior here is simply gorgeous and is as factory as can be. The seat belt clips along the ceiling rails are still present and usable. The dash is as if straight from the factory.

Comp Cams camshaft with P8 XE268h-10 grind, Holley classic polished 600cfm carb, standard heavy duty twin snorkel air cleaner. HEI distributor with Taylor 409 Pro Race Spiro 10.4mm leads, Hooker headers, Flowmaster mufflers and 2 ½” pipes

The extra gauges set under the dash are only to set them “just in case” feelings at ease, as we all know, tapping the original gauges doesn’t always work best. The high back bucket seats are contoured nicely to hold you in and that “T bar” Hurst shifter set deep into the centre consul is set nicely for slamming that 4 speed gear box into action when them lights do change. Real muscle cars only have 4 gears!

TRANSMISSION: Standard M20 Muncie 4 speed with Hurst shifter DIFF:

The typical 15” rally wheels remained the flavour of the era and sit nicely under them guards to carry the 275 wide rear and 225 wide front tyres.

Factory GM 12 bolt safe-T-track with 3.55:1 gearing

SUSPENSION:

Under this car is just as awesomely restored as above. The engine bay is detailed to factory specs including the rare Twin Air Ram air cleaner.

Factory suspension with Air Lift 1000 air bags in rear springs

BRAKES:

Factory boosted discs front and drum brakes rear

The boot interior panels are sealed and paint finished to a stipple finish which looks awesome as if factory optioned as well. The good ole rumble from that 400ci through the twin exhaust is truly music to the ears and fully sets this stunning looking car hard into the muscle car world.

WHEELS/TYRES: Factory Rally II with 275/60/15 BF Goodrich rear and 225/70/15 BFG up front STEREO:

Period correct 8 track with modern duel cone speakers in rear

No! Factory car

They are definitely a favourite of mine.

Q&A: So how long have you owned the car ? Since January 2022 so around 7 months Where did you find it, import or around NZ? Bought off a friend in the AMCC Car Club, he bought it in from the USA, from I believe, a New York policeman What made you pick this car? I’ve always loved them and when John bought it in and I saw it I told him if he ever wanted to sell her I might be keen, to which he replied he probably wouldn’t.

But then lucky for me, about 6 months later he called me saying he would sell her as he had something else he wanted to bring in. So beg, borrow and steal and here she is! What would be your favourite car to have? 70 Chevelle or Cuda and what I have What condition was it in when you got it? Pretty much as you see it What car would you like to test drive? The drag race Dodge Demon Any other cool cars in the shed? Yes What other cool cars have you owned? Don’t know if everyone would call them cool, but a 1973 350 HQ Holden, 74 Chevy Statesman, V8 Leyland P76 Executive, 66 Impala, 1980 GMC Sierra Grande, 1993 Silverado 1500, VX LS1 Commodore, VY SS UTE, Ford LTD, Ford XR6

Q&A continued Any you wish you still owned? The HQ, Impala, both pick-ups and VY SS What cars are on the wish list? Chevelle And Cuda Favourite style of car? 2 door coupe’s What do you love about the car scene the most? The variety and custom you see and you meet some great like-minded people. I’ve made some great friends out of the car scene. Favourite car movie? American Graffiti, 1982 Aussie movie - Running on Empty, any 80’s American car movies like Smokey and the Bandit Whats on the stereo right now? CFM Favourite band / singer to go cruising with on the stereo? AC/DC, ZZ Top, I like Heavy Metal and good old Kiwi music but hardly ever turn the stereo on as that V8 rumble is music to my ears Are you involved in any car clubs? American Muscle Car Club, American Steel and Kaiaua Kruisers Anyone you would you like to thank for helping with the car? John for selling it to me and Adrienne for liking them also - so no objections. Anything else you would like to add….. This is one of 9348 GTO Hardtop Coupes Built in 1970 with the 400ci and 4 speed manual. It was originally Verdoro Green with black vinyl roof and assembled at the Baltimore, Maryland Plant on the 3rd week of January 1970. Sold new at A.W. Golding Inc. Reading Pennsylvania for the sum of $4,130.45 with the features the new owner wanted but standard would have been $3,349.00.

We have a copy of all the original paperwork and window card. As near as I can tell the restoration was done between 2010- 2020 and I would say maybe around 2015-16 to a high standard. These when they came out, were known in the advertising as The HUMBLER. Some came out with a push button on the dash that would open up the exhaust and make them sound a lot more grunty much the same as the BiModal systems you get now on some of the late model Corvettes etc.

Winterblast WEEKEND 2022

You can always tell when it’s the middle of winter again. Bay Rodders hold their awesome “Winterblast” weekend in Tauranga in the usual sunny Bay of Plenty. Being winter of course, the rain just seems to arrive for this weekend, but it certainly doesn’t dampen down the fun and laughs of the event. This annual event has been locked in my diary for as long as I can remember, it is such an awesome event to get along to! Whether you’re rocking along to get amongst the entire weekends festivities

or just rolling into the show and swap meet on the Sunday, it’s a great weekend to be part of. It all kicks off on the Friday evening with people rolling into the Bay Rodders club rooms in Mount Maunganui to register for the weekend and catch up with mates for a few laughs. Saturday morning kicks off with a mystery rally with participants given a couple of sheets of paper with directions and a “todo list” on and she’s all go. It’s not exactly a hard mystery rally as mystery rallies go. Everyone leaves at once as if in a convoy, heading off to the first challenge of the trip to score points as part of the competition. I think the real mystery is how to rig the points scoring really, not that we would, just saying!

First up was the ole “putt the tennis ball into a bucket”. The trick here was to find out which bucket was worth the most points though. A little simple reconnaissance here, a top score of “ten” was obtainable for the score sheet and it was off to the next challenge. It’s always a cool cruise at these events. This time we headed off down the coast as if heading back home for me. I did wonder if they were going to drop me off actually, so I kept my manners in-tact for the morning, just! The next challenge was a goody and not something you do everyday at home, well, not for most of us anyway. With a plunger placed between your legs and a co-competitor with a toilet roll placed between theirs, the challenge was on to slip that plunger where you didn’t think you would, in the toilet roll that is.

I’m really not sure how the points scoring went with this challenge, but I’ll claim a “ten” anyway for Lynne’s screams! After-all, it’s my story and there’s no “fact checkers” allowed in this case. So back on the road again, cruising off towards Whakatane, turning off to the awesome spot of Thornton Beach to stop in at the Thornton Beach Holiday Park for the next challenge and an awesome lunch break to chill out and have giggle or two. This next challenge brought out who the ones to watch were. I was actually surprised how safe most burglars would be in this instance. When it comes to knife and axe throwing, guns are definitely the better option for most here. Although, there were a few that scored pretty-well with the knife throwing at the

wooden targets. They were the ones who had obviously been practicing for the Vikings theme for the upcoming party with a rather intense competitive attitude I feel. So after a good feed from the awesome Bay Rodders BBQ, the weather gods decided it was time for everyone to move on and head back to Tauranga to prepare for the evening events. This was awesome. If you haven’t been to a Bay Rodders gathering before, you definitely need to prepare yourself for an awesome laugh and party! The theme for the dinner and evening was “Vikings” this time. If you can picture Ragnor and Lagertha sitting down for a feast with the clan then raging out on a dance floor, you’ve pretty much got it. It did actually seem to come natural for

most, so I’m surprised at the previous lack of knife and axe throwing abilities to be honest. The Tauranga Citizen Club put on a fantastic meal for all and the cover band certainly jammed it out all night making for an awesome rage up. Bay Rodders had an awesome bunch of trophies up for grabs. Designed and built by Pure CNC in Tauranga, these cool looking Viking Trophies made for an awesome piece of memorabilia of a great weekend. Although, this was just the Saturday. Show Day is actually on the Sunday combined with a swap meet, so there’s more to come yet.

The continuation of the Winterblast Run rolls into the sunday with a car show and swap meet held within the Spring Street carpark building in Tauranga. This multi-level building provides a great sheltered spot to park up for the Hot Rods, Muscle Cars and Classics that roll in and park-up for the day while the swap meet goes on around it all. This is open to anyone who just wants to get amongst the scene to bring along what they have. Vintage, bikes, race cars and various clubs get involved with this day, which makes for an awesome wander around with the variety of different machines to check out. Four levels of the building were fully packed with awesome rides on display. The swap meet is automotive only keeping it a cool wander for those in the scene. Coffee stalls and club bbq’s are on hand to keep you warm and feed as well as raise funds for the various supporters of the day. For the weekend entrants, it’s a great day to chill out after the busy saturday and

festivities the night before and simply go for a wander to any of the local cafe’s to check out the Tauranga Harbour views, recovering from the night before. With a heap of support from their sponsors, Bay Rodders put on another great prizegiving with a table full of goodies to give away to random entrants in the day along with the show winners. Being in the winter months, not many shows are planned so this one is great to get to and break them winter blues from the lack of shows. Rain, hail and shine, this show goes on along with the weekend events. If you haven’t got yourself along to catch the entire weekend, scribble it in your diary for next year. The sunday show is just a portion of the weekend’s fun for sure! It’s definitely called “Winterblast” for a reason, so GET AMONGST!
