After a gap of eight years I am delighted to say The Transat bakerly is back. As rights holders and organisers of the race, we at OC Sport recognise that this is an event with a unique place in the history of sailing and with a remarkable history of its own.

Over the years The Transat has proved a testbed for some of the world’s greatest sailors – many of them French and British – and for some of the world’s most exciting yachts. The race has a unique character, claiming the formidable east-to-west route across the north Atlantic all to its own.

It is for all these reasons that we were determined to bring The Transat back and re-establish it as a cornerstone event every four years on the world professional solo racing calendar. With the fouryearly Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe taking place two years after each edition of The Transat, OC Sport is now in a position to offer a solid calendar of professional transatlantic races for the world’s top sailors.

Après une absence de 8 ans, je suis heureux d’annoncer que The Transat bakerly “is back”. Chez OC Sport nous reconnaissons que cette course est unique avec une histoire exceptionnelle. À travers les années, la Transat Anglaise a été une épreuve phare pour les plus grands skippers au monde, Français et Anglais majoritairement, mais également pour certains des bateaux les plus impressionnants. Cette course est unique et bénéficie d’un parcours formidable, d’est en ouest à travers l’Atlantique, le tout en solitaire.

C’est pour toutes ces raisons que nous étions déterminés à voir le retour de la Transat Anglaise et lui permettre de redevenir la pierre angulaire du calendrier des meilleurs spécialistes des courses en solitaire. Avec la Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe qui a lieu tous les 4 ans, OC Sport est désormais en position d’offrir un calendrier solide de courses transatlantiques pour les meilleurs marins au monde.

This year The Transat returns to its original course, starting as always in Plymouth, but finishing in New York where we have forged a new partnership with host venue One° 15 Brooklyn Marina.

Cette année, la course revient à ses origines au départ, comme toujours, de Plymouth, mais terminera cette fois à New York où nous avons bâti un nouveau partenariat avec la One° 15 Brooklyn Marina qui accueillera l’arrivée de la course.

For the first time we have invited competitors to gather at Saint-Malo a week before the official race start from Plymouth. With a full race village at Saint-Malo, we hope this will give French race fans, team sponsors and skippers an opportunity to engage with ‘La Transat Anglaise’ in a way that has never been possible before.

Pour la première fois nous invitons les concurrents à se réunir à Saint Malo une semaine avant le départ. THE PEDIGREE OF THE TRANSAT BAKERLY This race is the mother of the transats, the original solo transatlantic and is on any professional solo sailor’s wishlist – they all want to do it, to compete in the race and win it. And if you look at who has won it, there are only big names on the list and it still appeals to the top-guns in professional sailing. This year’s startlist underlines that, with Armel Le Cléac’h, Vincent Riou, François Gabart and Thomas Coville all keen to write their name in the winner’s column.

L’HISTOIRE DE THE TRANSAT BAKERLY C’est la mère de toutes les transats, la première course transatlantique en solitaire et tous les coureurs au large rêvent de la gagner. Au palmarès de l’épreuve on ne trouve que des grands noms de la voile. Et il suffit de regarder la grille de départ de la prochaine édition pour comprendre que des Armel Le Cléac’h, Vincent Riou, François Gabart ou encore Thomas Coville ne veulent qu’une chose: ajouter leur nom à la prestigieuse liste des vainqueurs.

THE HARDEST OF THE TRANSATLANTICS Clearly the reason why The Transat bakerly is arguably the hardest of the transatlantics is because you are beating against the weather patterns, whereas in the Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe, or the Transat Jacques Vabre, you go to windward for a while, but then you escape from the bad weather and run-off downwind.

LA PLUS DIFFICILE DES COURSES TRANSATLANTIQUES De toute évidence, The Transat bakerly est la plus difficile des courses transatlantiques parce qu’elle se joue dans des vents contraires, alors que la Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe ou la Transat Jacques Vabre commencent au près, mais se terminent généralement sous des latitudes plus chaudes, moins ventées et au portant.

NOT JUST AGAINST THE WEATHER, BUT AGAINST THE ATLANTIC SWELL TOO Because you are against the pattern of the general weather, you are always against the swell and that is very, very challenging for the skippers and the boats. There has been so much drama in this race over the years, not so much because it goes upwind, but because it goes against the swell and the waves.

PAS SEULEMENT CONTRE LES VENTS, MAIS AUSSI CONTRE LA HOULE DE L’ATLANTIQUE Le parcours emmène la flotte contre les dépressions qui balayent l’Atlantique d’ouest en est, et donc contre les vagues, ce qui rend les conditions de navigation très difficiles pour les skippers et les bateaux. La course a connu d’innombrables drames au cours de son histoire, pas tant du fait des vents contraires, mais souvent à cause de la houle et des vagues.

A RACE WITHOUT REST Even when the bad weather is behind them the skippers have to deal with icebergs, fog and commercial traffic. There is no let-up and no proper time to rest and recover – the skippers are fighting from start to finish. On other solo transats you have some segments of the course that give you much more time to rest, or at least a chance to recover a bit and rebuild your strength.

UNE COURSE SANS RÉPIT Même quand les tempêtes sont derrière eux, les navigateurs doivent encore affronter les icebergs, le brouillard et les navires de commerce. Ils n’ont pas beaucoup le temps de se reposer et doivent se battre du début à la fin, alors que sur d’autres transats en solitaire, certaines tranches du parcours sont plus calmes et leur permettent de souffler et de reprendre des forces.

A TEST OF STRATEGY FOR THE SKIPPERS Aside from driving the boat, a key skill in itself, the skippers need to have a good long -term strategy because on this transat, once you take one routing option, you are then locked into that option. It is a relatively short race - at least for the Ultimes and IMOCA60s – so when you decide to go one way you need to stick to it. You cannot go north and then south.

BIG STRESS ON THE BOATS The Transat is tough on the rig, the structure of the boat and on the keel. The faster the boats are going, the more stress they are encountering. You can escape a bit from the worst of the weather, by going south or north, but at some stage you need to make progress to the west and then you will have to face the weather head-on. The skippers have to be good engineers because, at some point, they are bound to have to carry out repairs. The key is to drive the boat at a level that ensures that the boat itself can survive.

A COURSE IN THREE PARTS The first section of the race is the exit of the Channel when skippers make their first big decision, whether to turn right or left. This is very challenging because they have the coast of Britain and Ireland on their starboard side and they have to contend with the maritime traffic of the Channel. Each skipper is there to win the race which means they have to decide whether to play their own game or race against the other boats and thus immediately apply a tactical layer on top of their long-term strategy.

The middle section is the completely openwater segment from the west of Ireland to the eastern edge of the ice exclusion zone off the Newfoundland coast, where the skippers need to find their rhythm and settle into the race.

Once they reach the exclusion zone, they enter the final section of the race which is influenced to some extent by the proximity of the coast.

If they want to win then, from this point, they need to decide which of their opponents they need to cover to get to the finish ahead of them at New York.

UN EXERCICE DE STRATÉGIE POUR LES SKIPPERS En plus d’être de bons barreurs, les skippers doivent avoir des qualités de stratège et être capables d’avoir une vision à long terme et d’anticiper, car lorsqu’ils prennent une option, ils ne peuvent plus en changer. C’est une épreuve relativement courte, en tout cas pour les Ultimes et les IMOCA, donc quand vous faites un choix de route, vous devez l’assumer. Impossible d’aller vers le nord, puis vers le sud.

LES BATEAUX MIS À RUDE ÉPREUVE The Transat est une course difficile pour le gréement, pour la structure du bateau et pour la quille. Plus les bateaux sont rapides, plus ils sont soumis à des charges importantes. Les navigateurs peuvent parfois éviter le plus gros d’une tempête en allant un peu plus sud ou nord, mais l’objectif est de progresser vers l’ouest et il faut pour cela affronter le train des dépressions. C’est pourquoi les skippers doivent aussi être de bons ingénieurs car ils sont parfois contraints de réparer en pleine mer. D’où l’importance de préserver le bateau.

UNE ROUTE EN TROIS PARTIES La première partie du parcours consiste à sortir de la Manche, qui impose un premier choix : à droite ou à gauche. Une décision très difficile car sur tribord, la flotte a l’Irlande et la Grande Bretagne et elle doit négocier l’important trafic maritime de la Manche. Tous les skippers sont là pour gagner et ils peuvent, soit jouer leur propre jeu, soit jouer contre les autres bateaux en donnant à leur stratégie une orientation tactique. Le milieu du parcours se déroule en haute mer, entre l’Irlande et la zone d’exclusion des glaces près de Terre Neuve.

Les skippers doivent trouver leur rythme et s’installer dans la course. Une fois passée la zone d’exclusion, ils entrent dans la dernière partie, marquée par la proximité de la côte.

Pour gagner, il faut savoir quels concurrents surveiller pour finir devant à New York.

RACING INTO THE WEATHER SYSTEMS TRAVELLING WESTEAST ACROSS THE ATLANTIC Weather forecasting is relatively accurate on this course because the race is set purely on the north Atlantic and there is no other part of the world that is better analysed than this one.

So all the weather models are relatively reliable for the first 7296 hours. Sometimes the start is in a high pressure system and the skippers can sail downwind but generally they start upwind and finish upwind. There are three different routes from a meteo point of view. One is a straight line – the rhumb line. In fact this is a curve towards the north. It is the shortest in terms of distance, but probably the hardest in terms of weather. Then you can take a route, at least in the early part of race, that is more northerly. In this case you can play the north side of the low pressure systems, which means sailing downwind. This can be fast, but you may encounter a bad sea-state because of cross-swells. However, the ice exclusion area off Labrador and Newfoundland means you will need to dive south relatively early to get around it. The third option is a southern route, which can be quite tricky and full of traps. You may start in a favourable weather pattern for the first four or five days, but then conditions can change completely and you may have to beat all the way to New York.

CONTRE VENTS ET COURANTS Les prévisions météo sont relativement fiables sur ce parcours car la course se joue uniquement sur l’Atlantique Nord et aucune autre région au monde n’est mieux analysée. Les modèles météo sont donc assez sûrs pour les premières 72-96 heures.

Les concurrents s’élancent parfois dans un système de hautes pressions, au portant, mais le plus souvent, ils partent au près et finissent au près. Du point de vue météorologique, il existe trois routes différentes. La première est une ligne droite : c’est la route orthodromique, qui est en fait une courbe vers le nord et qui est - la plus courte en terme de distance - mais probablement la plus difficile pour la météo. La flotte peut également suivre une route plus nord, au moins sur la première partie de la traversée, qui permet de passer au nord des dépressions et donc de profiter des vents portants. C’est une route potentiellement plus rapide, mais avec une mer souvent très agitée en raison des vents de travers. Et la zone d’exclusion des glaces au large de Terre Neuve oblige de toute façons les marins à plonger vers le sud assez tôt pour la contourner. La dernière option est donc la route sud qui peut s’avérer compliquée et semée d’embûches, car même si le départ se fait dans des conditions favorables pendant les quatre ou cinq premiers jours, les conditions peuvent ensuite changer radicalement et vous obliger à remonter au près jusque New-York.

“SOMETIMES THE START IS IN A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM AND THE SKIPPERS CAN SAIL DOWNWIND, BUT GENERALLY THEY START UPWIND AND FINISH UPWIND” ICE LIMITS, FOG, COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC AND FISHERMEN There is a large area off Newfoundland where icebergs are drifting and because of the mild winter we can expect to have quite a large ice exclusion zone. Due to the change in temperature between the sea and the air, the skippers will encounter very foggy conditions off the Newfoundland coast, which is always a bit scary when you are sailing solo. The Transat course is a busy one for commercial traffic, but with AIS (Automatic Identification System) on the yachts and ships, the skippers should be able to anticipate any possible collisions.

There is a lot of fishing activity as well and unfortunately the fishermen do not always use AIS and lobster pots can be dangerous, especially for multihulls that can be brought to a sudden stop by them. In strong winds this can even cause a capsize. Some of the fishing gear is very solid and the impact of collisions on carbon hulls can be dramatic.

THE ATLANTIC RIVER – THE GULF STREAM The Gulf Stream is like a river moving alongside the US coast and then crossing the Atlantic and weakening the more you head east. So when you are off Newfoundland you have to deal with that because it is a wide area of water – 20-30nm across and with 2-4 knots of current. If you have poor weather in this area the Gulf Stream can throw up really bad seas – I think the worst I have seen were in the Gulf Stream. It is well monitored and, with satellite communications, every skipper will be able to get the right idea of where the Stream is and how to play it.

SLEEP MANAGEMENT Sleep management is a key part of any solo race, but because The Transat is not a pure downwind race, it is probably not the most critical area to manage. Of course it is important, especially with the danger of collision, and the sea state can be brutal, so sometimes it is better to hand-steer than leave the auto-pilot to go through the waves. The Transat can also be a fast and furious reach at some points in the race, leaving precious little time for rest for the hard-pressed skippers.

GLACES, BROUILLARD, CARGOS ET PÊCHEURS Le parcours emmène les concurrents au large de Terre Neuve dans une zone où dérivent de nombreux icebergs. Or avec l’hiver très doux que nous venons d’avoir, cette zone pourrait être plus vaste que d’habitude. Par ailleurs, les écarts de températures entre l’air et la mer génèrent des conditions très brumeuses, source d’angoisse pour les navigateurs en solitaire. Et comme le parcours de The Transat est également emprunté par les navires commerciaux, il faudra redoubler de vigilance, même si l’AIS (Automatic Identification System) sur les voiliers et cargos permet d’anticiper une éventuelle collision. La zone est également très fréquentée par les pêcheurs. Or ces derniers n’ont pas toujours l’AIS et ils peuvent laisser des casiers à homards qui s’avèrent dangereux pour les multicoques lancés à pleine vitesse. En cas de collision, c’est l’arrêt violent, et même parfois, le chavirage.

LE GULF STREAM : RIVIÈRE DE L’ATLANTIQUE Le Gulf Stream est semblable à une rivière qui coule le long de la côte Est des États-Unis, traverse l’Atlantique et faiblit en progressant vers l’Est. Au large de Terre-Neuve, ce courant peut atteindre 20 à 30 milles de large et 2 à 4 noeuds de vitesse et donc lever, en cas de vents forts, une mer démontée. Grâce aux communications par satellite, les marins peuvent suivre son évolution et savoir où il se trouve et comment le négocier au mieux.

RECHARGER SES BATTERIES La gestion du sommeil est un ingrédient clef sur une course en solitaire, mais comme The Transat n’est pas une épreuve de portant, le sommeil est peut-être moins difficile à gérer. Bien sûr, cela reste un élément important, surtout en raison des risques de collision et de l’état de la mer qui impose de prendre la barre, plutôt que de la confier au pilote automatique. Mais The Transat peut receler une grande partie de reaching, laissant peu de temps de repos aux skippers sous pression.

1964 1960 WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Five British sailors made a bet to see whether they could race solo cross the Atlantic, and who could do it the fastest.

Among the sailors were Blondie Hasler and Sir Francis Chichester who eventually won the 3,000-mile race from Plymouth to New York aboard Gipsy Moth III, in 40 days, 12 hours and 30 minutes.

A LEGEND IS BORN The 1964 edition became the launchpad for one of the most influential figures in ocean racing, Eric Tabarly. One of 13 entrants, Tabarly won the race from Plymouth to Rhode Island in an astonishing 27 days, three hours and 56 minutes aboard Pen Duick II. His success was instrumental in popularising solo sailing in France, a country which today dominates the sport.

UNE LÉGENDE EST NÉE La 2ème édition est un tremplin pour l’un des plus éminents personnages de la navigation en solitaire : Eric Tabarly. Il remporte la course en seulement 27 jours, 3 heures et 56 minutes à bord de son ketch de 44 pieds, Pen Duick II. La performance d’Eric Tabarly contribue largement à populariser la voile en France, pays dans lequel le sport est aujourd’hui le plus réputé.

THE GREAT STORM In 1968 a huge depression swept over the fleet, bringing with it 60 knots of wind.

Using his onboard radio to contact meteorologists and help plan his routing, Geoffrey Williams on Sir Thomas Lipton managed to avoid the brunt of the storm. Gaining 300 miles on the rest of the fleet, Williams sailed into Rhode Island victorious in a time of 25 days, 20 hours and 33 minutes. The use of weather routing advice to skippers by shore-based experts was banned after this race.

L’INVENTION (ET L’INTERDICTION) DU ROUTAGE En 1968 le nord de l’Atlantique est balayé par une énorme dépression générant des vents de plus de 60 nœuds. Geoffrey Williams, sur Sir Thomas Lipton, est le premier à utiliser le routage météo en course lui permettant ainsi d’être averti d’une tempête à venir. Il choisit alors une route au nord qui lui permet d’éviter le plus gros de la dépression. Il gagne environ 300 milles sur ses concurrents et remporte la course en 25 jours, 20 heures et 33 minutes. Le routage météo sera par la suite interdit.

THE BIGGER THE BETTER As the size of the fleet grew, so did the size of the boats.

Fifty-five solo skippers started the 1972 edition and Bill Howell’s 128-foot three masted schooner, Vendredi Trieze, was the biggest boat on the startline. Marie Claude Faroux became the first woman to take part in the race and Alain Colas was victorious aboard Tabarly’s trimaran Pen Duick IV, arriving in Rhode Island after 20 days, 13 hours and 15 minutes at sea.

PLUS GRAND, PLUS RAPIDE Tout comme la flotte, les bateaux s’agrandissent. Cinquante-cinq skippers en solitaire prennent le départ de l’édition 1972. The start was overshadowed by the death of Mike McMullen’s wife Lizzie, who was accidentally electrocuted while preparing his boat. It was also discovered that one of the competitors was underage. Only 17-yearsold, David Sandeman was officially unable to compete, but he crossed the startline anyway and was later rescued following a collision with a trawler. A major depression hit the rest of the fleet resulting in a record 50 retirements out of 125 entries. Further tragedy ensued as Tony Bullimore’s boat caught fire, Mike Flanagan fell overboard and Mike McMullen was lost at sea.

Eric Tabarly won the race aboard Pen Duick VI in 23 days, 20 hours and 12 minutes.

1980 THE TRIUMPH OF THE MULTIHULLS Following the tragedies of 1976, a restriction on boat size (56ft) and fleet size (110 boats) was enforced. Ninety competitors started the race, with a noticeable absence of French skippers who objected to the restrictions. American competitor Phil Weld won this edition aboard his custom-built 56ft trimaran Moxie in a record time of 18 days. Multihulls dominated the race, holding all top-five positions.

UNE ANNÉE TRAGIQUE Le départ est assombri par la mort de la femme de Mike McMullen, électrocutée alors qu’elle l’aidait à préparer son bateau. Eric Tabarly remporte cet-te édition en 23 jours, 20 heures et 12 minutes sur Pen Duick VI.

L’ÂGE DES MULTICOQUES Pour cette édition, les organisateurs imposent une restriction sur la longueur des bateaux (56 pieds) et limitent le nombre d’inscrits à 110 concurrents.

Quatre-vingt-dix concurrents prennent le départ avec une baisse de participation des Français, mécontents des nouvelles règles. L’Américain Phil Weld remporte cette édition à bord de Moxie, construit pour l’occasion. La course est dominée par les multicoques, qui prennent les 5 premières places du classement.

1984 THE CAPSIZE As severe gales swept the course, several competitors were dismasted on the first day of racing. The outcome of the race was defined by the capsizing of Phillippe Jeantot in mid-Atlantic. Despite Phillipe Poupon being the first skipper to Rhode Island in 16 days, 11 hours and 55 minutes, Yvon Fauconnier was declared the winner after assisting Jeantot for 16 hours as he awaited rescue. The news was broken to Poupon during his winner’s press conference and he broke down in tears.

En effet Philippe Poupon arrive le premier à Newport après 16 jours, 11 heures et 55 minutes, mais c’est Yvon Fauconnier qui est déclaré vainqueur pour avoir passé 16 heures à secourir Jeantot. Philippe Poupon fond en larmes en apprenant la nouvelle au milieu de la conférence de presse dédiée à sa victoire.

Following the disappointment of the previous edition, Phillippe Poupon on Fleury Michon enjoyed an exceptional race and set a new course record of 10 days, 9 hours and 15 minutes at sea. Meanwhile British sailor David Sellings found his boat surrounded by 60 whales in the midAtlantic for three days. As the whales started to barge and hole his boat, Sellings was forced into his liferaft before his yacht sank. “It was terrifying,” he reported.

A 24-HOUR LEAD In 1992 the race was plagued with Atlantic hazards - heavy storms, icebergs, trawlers, fog and whales. An early favourite, Loïck Peyron aboard Fujicolor became embroiled in a battle of the trimarans. Following broken daggerboards, broken mainsheet tracks and a capsize elsewhere in the fleet, Peyron seized his opportunity and arrived in Rhode Island with a 24 hours lead. Taking his first win in a time of 11 days, one hour and 35 minutes.

Après que Bourgnon, alors leader, casse son rail de grand voile, qu’Arthaud chavire et que Poupon perde du terrain suite à un problème de dérive, c’est Loïck Peyron, favori de la course, qui remporte la course à bord du FujiColor en 11 jours, 1 heure et 35 minutes, avec plus de 24 heures d’avance sur le second bateau.

1996 PEYRON DOES IT AGAIN The 1996 edition marked a new era of racing. Multihulls were no longer new and experimental, but fast and refined ocean racing machines.

The race was a battle of the French, with Loïck Peyron, Francis Joyon, Paul Vatine and Laurent Bourgon all back for the title. Joyon took an unusual northern route, used only by Blondie Hasler before him, and soon had a 300-mile lead. Just 400 miles from the finish however, he was stalled by unstable breeze leaving Peyron to savour his second win and a time very close to the race record – 10 days, 10 hours and five minutes.

UN DOUBLÉ POUR PEYRON Les multicoques sont devenus monnaie courante. On assiste à un match principalement franco-français entre Peyron, Bourgnon, Vatine ou Joyon, tous là pour le titre. Joyon crée la surprise en optant pour une route au nord seulement empruntée par Blondie Hasler en 1960, qui lui permet de prendre une avance de plus de 300 milles. Mais des vents instables viennent le ralentir à seulement 400 milles de l’arrivée permettant à Loïck Peyron de passer en tête et de savourer ainsi une seconde victoire en 10 jours, 10 heures et 5 minutes, un temps très proche du record de la course.

2000 THE RISE OF ELLEN MACARTHUR At just 23, Ellen MacArthur was one of the youngest taking part in the race and unexpectedly blew her competitors out of the water. The IMOCA 60 class boasted a star-studded lineup of Thomas Coville, Michel Desjoyeaux, Yves Parlier, Mike Golding, Roland Jourdain and Dominique Wavre to name but a few. However it was MacArthur who took the IMOCA 60 line honours, proving that she was not just in the offshore game to compete, but to win.

Francis Joyon won the race overall in a record time of nine days, 23 hours and 21 minutes.

2004 THE FASTEST YET A week into the race, drama in the north Atlantic reached epic proportions and triggered a series of extraordinary rescue operations. Jean-Pierre Dick was dismasted and rolled in 50 knot winds, Vincent Riou’s PRB lost her rig and Bernard Stamm was forced to abandon his IMOCA 60 following the loss of his keel. Michel Desjoyeaux won the multihull race on his trimaran Géant in eight days, eight hours and 29 minutes, just three hours ahead of Coville and the fastest time yet. Mike Golding set a new monohull race record when winning the IMOCA class in 12 days, 15 hours, 18 minutes and 8 seconds.

2008 A HAT-TRICK FOR PEYRON The 13th edition of The Transat headed from Plymouth to Boston over 2,800 miles. Despite being plagued by wild depressions, icebergs and freezing fog, the race looked set to be a record-breaker from the off and Loïck Peyron beat Mike Golding’s monohull record in a time of 12 days, 11 hours and 45 minutes – four weeks quicker than the first time set by Sir Francis Chichester in 1960. Thirteen IMOCA 60s and 10 Class40 skippers set out from Plymouth.

2016

THE REBIRTH OF A CLASSIC In 2016, the race goes back to its roots following the original 3,000-mile course from Plymouth to New York. Four classes will cross the Atlantic; giant Ultimes, flying Multi50s, powerful IMOCA 60s and hardy Class40s. For the first time, a non-timed warm-up leg from Saint-Malo to Plymouth has been introduced, with the race starting on May 2nd.

Mike Golding knows a thing or two about how to do well in The Transat bakerly. He was second in the race in 2000 in the IMOCA 60 fleet and then went on to win that class in some style four years later, reaching Boston first out of 15 boats and in record time.

Mike Golding a une petite idée de ce qu’il faut pour décrocher un bon résultat dans The Transat. En 2000, il avait terminé deuxième de la classe IMOCA, avant de l’emporter quatre ans plus tard, face à 14 autres bateaux et en un temps record.

Golding identified four key factors that any sailor who hopes to win The Transat must get right if they are to have a chance of emulating his own performance.

The first is pre-race preparation, a basic rule for all yacht racing. “Like all big races, having a good prep for The Transat and making sure your boat is right is vital,” said Golding. “A lot of that comes down to shore teams and making sure that every single thing on the boat is functioning and capable of putting up with what the race throws at it.”

Le skipper britannique a relevé quatre facteurs déterminants pour avoir une chance de gagner The Transat. Le premier, c’est la préparation en amont, règle de base pour n’importe quelle course à la voile.

“Comme toujours, il faut veiller à ce que le bateau soit bien prêt. C’est vital”, assure Mike Golding. “Cela repose en grande partie sur l’équipe technique. Il faut vérifier que la moindre petite chose à bord fonctionne et puisse tenir face à tous les aléas de la course”.

The next element is the getaway from Plymouth.

Golding knows that a problem in the early stages can be fatal to race-winning chances. In 2004 the motor that controlled the movement of the swing keel on Ecover burnt itself out after the very first tack of the race at the Eddystone Light House, due south of Plymouth. Golding feared at that point that his race was already over. But against the odds he managed to get all the way to Boston by laying the boat on her side every time he wanted to move the keel. The process nearly drove him crazy.

“Making a clean getaway and not having an incident or a problem in the first 2448 hours is pretty crucial,” explained Golding, 55, a three-time IMOCA world champion. “That doesn’t mean staying awake the whole of that time. What it means is settling down quickly into the rhythm of the race because, unlike the Vendée Globe, for example, you don’t have time to find your feet – you have got to be on it straightaway.”

Third on the list is getting the tactics right.

Golding reckons that, more than many races, The Transat throws up difficult decisions for tired skippers. They have to consider an always-complex weather pattern, with a series of depressions sweeping the course and there is usually a light-air patch in the middle of the race to contend with. And for much of the

Plus encore que dans les autres courses, The Transat impose aux skippers déjà fatigués de prendre des décisions difficiles. Ils doivent suivre des systèmes météo complexes, avec une série de dépressions qui balayent le parcours et généralement une zone de calmes à

final part of the race, people often forget that the course it tightly fringed by land, limiting tactical options as the skippers close on the finish at New York.

“The Transat is a very tactical race and there are options that you are going to be presented with along the way that can win or lose you the race. So staying on top of the weather and your tactical options is absolutely crucial,” said Golding. “If you look back at The Transat over the years, the races are quite often won or lost on a key tactical decision. It’s not a straight boat speed race necessarily. It is brutal but is it short, so you have just got to grunt up.”

Mais The Transat n’est pas une étape de la Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro. Ce n’est pas un sprint de 48 heures entre deux ports. Il faut absolument trouver son rythme et parvenir à un équilibre entre performance et durabilité”.

You have to get into a routine and strike a balance between performance and being able to sustain it.”

Donc de ce point de vue là, The Transat constitue une préparation très utile et viable”.

Golding believes The Transat remains an excellent build-up race for sailors preparing for the Vendée Globe. Some ask why would a sailor bother with a largely upwind race across the north Atlantic when the Vendée is predominantly a downwind race? But Golding counters that the final stage of the Vendée is often largely upwind and that is where the race is often won or lost.

“In the Vendée, from Cape Horn northwards to the finish is usually an incredibly long period of upwind sailing – quite considerably longer than The Transat,” said Golding. “It is not necessarily as rough because you are not in the North Atlantic, but it is a very long period of upwind sailing when the balance of the race often shifts. So from that perspective The Transat does present a viable and useful preparation.”

Whether you are preparing for the Vendée or taking on The Transat bakerly in a Class40, an Ultime or a Multi50, Golding believes the race offers the complete test. “There is a bit of everything in there and it is a real challenge on the boats,” he said. “It is usually cold and you are almost certainly going to face a storm or two and some very rough weather and that is in the space of just 12 days – in that time you might see it all.”

La course offre selon lui un test très complet, que ce soit en préparation du Vendée Globe, ou pour courir en Class40, en Ultime ou en Multi50. “Il y a un peu de tout et c’est un véritable défi pour les bateaux et les marins. Il fait généralement froid et vous êtes quasiment sûr d’affronter une ou deux tempêtes, tout cela en l’espace de 12 jours. Il faut s’attendre à tout.”

Maritime relations between Saint-Malo and England have always been strong. Historic war games between France and the UK are fortunately now bygone and have now given way to epic sporting challenges, the Route du Rhum Destination Guadeloupe and now The Transat bakerly. The oldest of these international offshore events is The Transat.

An English race, The Transat became the making of French offshore racing.

A legend was born when Eric Tabarly won The Transat in 1964 and again in 1976. Alain Colas made his Transat debut aboard Pen Duick IV and won the race in 1972. Six years later he raced in the Route de Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe and tragically never returned. Philipe Poupon, winner of the “Rhum” in 1986, topped The Transat leaderboard two years later. Michel Desjoyeaux has also won both competitions and Loïck Peyron, the only triple winner of The Transat, won the Route du Rhum and set the transatlantic record in 2014.

The history of The Transat and the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe are both closely entwined, and the town of SaintMalo is honoured to be hosting The Transat fleet for the first time in 2016.

For the first time in The Transat’s long history, Saint-Malo will host a “warm-up leg” between France and the start line in Plymouth. The pre-race passage will be an exciting event and we look forward to presenting The Transat fleet in the “Fosse aux Lions”. It will be a fantastic event.

Les joutes guerrières, fort heureusement révolues, ont laissé place aujourd’hui aux défis sportifs. Mais quels défis : The Transat et la Route du Rhum ! Le plus ancien d’entre eux, la Transat anglaise, a été très tôt, et brillamment relevé par les Français. Il y eut bien sûr Éric Tabarly, double lauréat (1964, 1976), ou encore Alain Colas, premier en 1972 sur Pen Duick IV et qui disparaîtra six ans plus tard au cours de la première Route du Rhum. Philippe Poupon, vainqueur du « Rhum » en 1986, arrive en tête de la Transat deux ans plus tard. Michel Desjoyeaux figure aussi aux deux palmarès. Loïck Peyron, seul triple vainqueur de la transat anglaise est le lauréat de la dernière Route du Rhum et le recordman de la traversée.

Les légendes croisées des deux transats en solitaire continuent à s’enrichir des exploits des mêmes marins. L’Histoire de ces deux épreuves mythiques est étroitement liée.

La venue cette année des bateaux de la Transat anglaise à Saint-Malo, port de départ de la Route du Rhum, est donc hautement symbolique. C’est aussi un honneur pour notre ville d’accueillir pour la première fois The Transat pour son « tour de chauffe ». La présentation rituelle des skippers dans la Fosse aux Lions, à la mode Route du Rhum, sera pour les malouins un moment jubilatoire.

Twenty-six competitors will sail into the vibrant waterfront city between 9am and 11am on Sunday 24th April and moor up at Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour Marina and Plymouth Yacht Haven ahead of the grueling 3,000 mile race from Plymouth to New York City.

Located by the beautiful waterfront and surrounded by dazzling views, Plymouth is the perfect place for this historic race to depart from on Monday 2nd May.

National and international visitors are invited to take part in the celebrations of the oldest and first ever solo transatlantic race by welcoming the sailors into the harbour, and absorbing the ambience of the waterfront fun during their stay in the city.

The Race Village will be open from Friday 29 April until Monday 2nd May, 10am to 5pm daily, where visitors will be able to step inside for a chance to meet some of the skippers and find out more about this transatlantic spectacular.

Le village de la course sera ouvert du vendredi 29 avril jusqu’au lundi 2 mai, de 10h00 à 17h00. Les visiteurs auront la possibilité d’y rencontrer les skippers, de trouver des informations utiles ou encore de faire le tour des nombreux stands qui les plongeront intégralement dans l’univers de la voile. Enfin un des plus grands voiliers jamais construits sera amarré sur le quai du Barbican Landing Stage.

There will be a host of sailing-themed stalls including clothing outlets and organisations. One of the larger boats will also be moored by the wharf at the Barbican Landing Stage offering people a closer view.

Whilst visiting The Barbican and historic harbour, visitors will be able to explore the quaint cobbled streets, hosting a wealth of independent shops, bars, galleries and restaurants.

With an extensive range of specialist and independent retailers to explore it’s the perfect place to find a unique piece of art for visitors to remember their experience in Britain’s Ocean City.

Located in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park, ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina opening Spring 2016 is the first new marina in New York City in 20 years.

A joint venture between majority owner SUTL Group and Edgewater Resources, ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina offers unparalleled water access.

With the calmest waters in all of New York Harbour thanks to its advanced technology and design, the marina accommodates boats up to 250ft for seasonal docking with a Sail Club & School this year. A members-only Harbour Club is planned.

Input from local waterfront experts, residents and not-forprofit groups chorused the need for public access which became the most important design consideration. In fact, the Marina is dedicating two percent of marina revenue towards community programming making boating available to residents of all ages, abilities, and incomes.

Située au cœur de Brooklyn Bridge Park, ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina, inaugurée au printemps 2016, est la première marina construite à New York depuis 20 vingt ans. Ce projet, fruit de la coopération entre la majorité des propriétaires de STUTL group et Edgewater Resources, offre un accès incomparable à l’océan.

Grâce à une technologie inédite, ses eaux sont réputées être les plus calmes du port de New York. Son architecture bien pensée lui permet d’héberger des bateaux allant jusqu’à 250 pieds pour des amarrages saisonniers. Elle accueille cette année le Sail & School Club. Un club dédié aux membres du port sera prochainement mis en place.

THE BIGGEST, FASTEST BOATS IN THE FLEET The impressive Ultime class makes its debut in The Transat bakerly 2016. With three massive hulls measuring as long as 100ft, a towering mast at 115ft and a sail area of over 700 ft², these giant trimarans are capable of setting a new course record this year. With top speeds of over 30 knots and an average speed of up to 18 knots, the Ultimes should complete the 3,000-mile Atlantic crossing in seven-to-eight days.

LES PLUS GROS ET LES PLUS RAPIDES L’impressionnante classe des Ultimes fait son entrée sur la Transat bakerly cette année. A VETERAN FLYER A popular racing trimaran since the 1970s, the Multi50 has earned its position on the world’s ocean racing scene. With a maximum length and height of 50ft, the Multi50 is small enough to be easily managed, but is capable of completing long passages at an average speed of 14.5 knots. The Multi50 is a popular boat - fun, exciting and fast. It made its debut in The Transat in 2004 and can expect to fly across the Atlantic in less than 12 days.

FRANÇOIS GABART AT JUST 32 YEARS OF AGE, FRENCH OCEAN RACER FRANÇOIS GABART IS A MAN ON A MISSION.

POURQUOI AVEZ-VOUS DÉCIDÉ DE PRENDRE LE DÉPART DE LA TRANSAT ANGLAISE ?

Beginning his sailing career in dinghies, Gabart started his solo offshore career on the Class Figaro Bénéteau circuit in 2008. In 2010 he finished second in the prestigious 2,000-mile Solitaire Bompard – Le Figaro race.

« C’est une course qui arrive à point nommé dans le programme du trimaran MACIF. On avait envie de participer à des grandes courses historiques sur ce bateau, la transat anglaise en fait partie et nous sommes contents de participer à l’histoire de cette transatlantique. C’est une traversée au près et en solitaire : un exercice qui est difficile. Cette course représente bien les ambitions sportives et humaines de notre projet et c’est une belle opportunité d’aligner le trimaran MACIF sur une course à dimension internationale. »

Then in 2013 Gabart won the world’s toughest solo ocean race the legendary Vendée Globe. Aged 29, Gabart became the fastest and youngest man around the world on a monohull in a time of 78 days, 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Following his double-handed Transat Jacque Vabre win aboard his Ultime MACIF in 2015, Gabart is now ready to take on the world solo aboard his 90 foot trimaran this year – and he’s starting with The Transat bakerly.

“The Transat is a legendary race and it is a good fit with my campaign this year,” Gabart explained. “It is my aim to put the MACIF trimaran through its paces competing in some of the toughest ocean races in the world.

“The 3,000-mile crossing between Plymouth and New York will be mostly upwind. Sailing upwind is always really physical, but sailing the Ultime upwind on my own will be even more so. For me, The Transat will be a very physical race. It will be a real test of my limits and of the boat’s speed and design.”

AVEZ-VOUS PU NAVIGUER EN SOLITAIRE À BORD DE MACIF ? « Ce sera ma première course en solitaire à bord du trimaran MACIF. Ce sera donc une grande première pour moi et j’ai hâte ! Les navigations en solitaire sur ce type de bateau sont exceptionnelles. »

QUELLES SONT VOS PREMIÈRES IMPRESSIONS ? « Ma prise en main du bateau a été crescendo jusque-là. Après la Transat Jacques Vabre en double l’année dernière, le convoyage retour du Brésil avec l’équipe technique m’a permis de m’exercer aux manœuvres en faux solo. Cela m’a mis en confiance sur mes capacités à gérer un bateau comme celui-ci tout seul.

DESPITE BEING ONE OF THE TOP SOLO RACERS IN THE WORLD, GABART WILL RACE HIS ULTIME SINGLE-HANDED FOR THE FIRST TIME DURING THE TRANSAT. “Sailing an Ultime solo is an exceptional experience and I can’t wait to get out there,” he said. “As we sailed home from the Transat Jacques Vabre finish in Brazil last year, I was able to practice solo manoeuvres with the technical team onboard. This gave me enough confidence in my ability to know that I could race MACIF solo.

“We looked at how the trimaran could be optimised for solo sailing and this winter she underwent a full refit to ensure that she was safe, comfortable and streamlined for one skipper. Since then I’ve been training solo in preparation for the race.

“Every year I push to develop myself as a sailor and take on new challenges. I really like the journey of discovery that comes with doing things for the first time.”

GABART IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST SKIPPERS TAKING PART IN THE TRANSAT BAKERLY, BUT HE IS WELL AWARE OF THE RACE’S HISTORY AND REPUTATION. “I wasn’t yet born when Eric Tabarly first won The Transat in 1964, but of course I know the story,” he said. “The Transat has played a major part in the history of offshore racing and especially French ocean racing. Tabarly’s two victories revolutionised sailing in France and is one of the reasons for its popularity today.

“The last edition of The Transat in 2008 was my first year competing in the Figaro Bénéteau II. Since then, many good things have happened in my career and I’m delighted to now be part of The Transat line-up in 2016.

“Because of the impact The Transat has had on offshore sailing in France, it is a symbolic race for me. I’m looking forward to connecting with it and becoming a part of the history of the race.”

THE FASTEST MAN AROUND THE WORLD IN A MONOHULL, GABART IS PACING HIMSELF FOR HIS FIRST SOLO ULTIME RACE. “There aren’t so many Ultimes taking part, but the competition is very strong with Sodebo and Actual also on the startline. I don’t want to say that a winning result doesn’t interest me, of course it does. But if I manage to navigate the crossing safely, with no mistakes and reach New York, I will be on the podium anyway,” he joked.

“Being on top of the podium would of course be the icing on the cake, but we’ll see. I’m also facing my own personal challenge, in being able to successfully cross the North Atlantic between Plymouth and New York upwind, alone. On a boat like Macif, the voyage will be far from easy.”

Suite à ces deux transatlantiques, nous avons mené plusieurs réflexions en vue de l’optimisation du trimaran en mode « solitaire ». Notre objectif principal a été de gagner à la fois en sécurité, en confort et en sérénité. C’est dans cette optique que le chantier d’hiver a été mené et que les aménagements ont été effectués.

Tous les entrainements à venir ont également été programmés pour cela.

Ces dernières années, mes « premières » se déroulent plutôt bien… j’aime bien ce principe de découverte ! »

QUE REPRÉSENTE CETTE COURSE POUR VOUS ? « Je n’étais pas né quand Eric Tabarly a remporté la transat anglaise dans les années 60, mais j’en ai toujours entendu parler !

Cette Transat fait partie de l’Histoire de la course au large et en particulier de la course au large française. La victoire d’Eric Tabarly en 1964 a été un élément déclencheur de l’histoire de la voile telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui.

Lors de la dernière édition en 2008, c’était ma première année en Figaro. J’ai donc suivi The Transat de loin. Depuis, beaucoup de choses se sont passées et je suis ravi de pouvoir m’aligner au départ le 2 mai prochain. C’est toujours sympa de renouer avec l’histoire et c’est une course vraiment symbolique pour moi. »

QUEL EST VOTRE OBJECTIF ? « Le premier objectif est bien évidemment de terminer cette Transatlantique.

Nous ne sommes pas nombreux en Ultim mais le plateau est joli et la concurrence est belle avec Sodebo et Actual.

Je ne dis pas que le résultat ne m’intéresse pas; évidemment qu’il m’intéresse. Si je réussis à naviguer le mieux possible et sans faire d’erreur, à minima je serai sur le podium ! On verra bien !

Terminer en haut du podium serait la cerise sur le gâteau.

Il y a aussi un petit défi personnel qui est de réussir à traverser l’Atlantique Nord entre l’Angleterre et New-York, au près, en solitaire sur un bateau comme le trimaran MACIF. C’est loin d’être simple ! »

QUEL TEMPS VOUS PARAIT POSSIBLE POUR RÉALISER CETTE TRAVERSÉE ? « Il me semble que le temps de référence réalisé par Michel Desjoyeaux à bord de Géant en 2004 était de 8 jours... Sur mon calendrier, j’ai noté que l’arrivée possible se situait autour du 8 ou 9 mai. On va donc probablement mettre entre 7 et 10 jours.

Cela parait raisonnable à la vue du parcours et des performances de nos bateaux. »

You only have to take a cursory look at Miranda Merron’s sailing CV to work out that this 46-year-old Englishwoman is one tough cookie. In 20 years of non-stop sailing she has raced the Atlantic solo and double-handed numerous times, she has completed a Volvo Ocean Race with an all-female crew, she has sailed on a round-the-world record attempt and she helped set a round Britain and Ireland record.

Merron has also done The Transat bakerly before. It was the last edition in 2008 and the Oxford-born Merron, who is the proud holder of a degree in Japanese from Cambridge University, was one of 11 skippers in the Class40 fleet who set sail from Plymouth. Notwithstanding suffering a brain haemorrhage eight months before the race start, Merron reached the finish at Marblehead in Massachusetts in seventh place after enduring some of the worst sea conditions she had faced anywhere on the planet.

As she continued her preparations for the 2016 Transat bakerly when she will race once again in the Class40 fleet on board Campagne de France, Merron took time out to recall that race, eight years ago. It was an inside out sort of start, with the skippers enjoying downwind conditions in the first week during a phase of the race in which Merron’s boat collided with whales twice.

“The first collision was quite light,” recalled Merron, “the second time round it was quite a high-speed smash and the whale didn’t come out of it very well but the boat was fine.”

Merron was in the top handful of boats for much of the early stages, but the part of the race that will be forever ingrained on her subconscious came when she hit The Transat’s big crossroads off the Newfoundland coast where the Labrador Current flows down into the Gulf Stream.

The race office had placed a virtual ice gate at this point on the course to keep the sailors south of the ice drifting down from the north.

Unfortunately the vagaries of the weather dictated that the Class40 fleet ended up sailing into the eye of a storm as the

Miranda Merron a également déjà couru The Transat. C’était la dernière édition en 2008. La navigatrice originaire d’Oxford qui a suivi des études de Japonais à l’Université de Cambridge, était alors un des 11 skippers en Class40 sur la ligne de départ à Plymouth. En dépit d’une hémorragie cérébrale huit mois plus tôt, Miranda a franchi l’arrivée à Marblehead dans le Massachusetts à la septième place, après avoir essuyé les pires conditions de sa carrière.

Alors qu’elle poursuit actuellement sa préparation pour l’édition 2016, où elle courra de nouveau en Class40 à bord de Campagne de France, Miranda Merron a pris le temps de revenir sur sa course il y a huit ans.

C’était un peu un départ ‘à l’envers’, avec des conditions de portant pendant toute la première semaine de course.

“J’ai eu deux collisions avec une baleine”, se souvient-elle. “La première était assez légère, mais la deuxième fois, j’allais très vite et la baleine ne s’en est pas sortie en super forme, mais pour le bateau, ça allait”.

Miranda était alors parmi le peloton de tête, mais le moment qui restera à jamais gravé dans sa mémoire est le grand carrefour au large de Terre-Neuve où le courant du Labrador se déverse dans le Gulf Stream. La direction de course avait placé une porte virtuelle à cet endroit pour garder la flotte au sud des glaces à la dérive.

Malheureusement, la météo n’a pas joué en la faveur des marins et la flotte des Class40 s’est retrouvée au coeur d’une tempête en descendant vers le sud pour franchir cette porte. “C’était la première fois de ma vie que je m’enfermais à

skippers headed south to get round the gate. “That is the only time in my life that I have ever shut myself inside a boat,” remembers Merron. “It was not the wind speed that was the problem – I think it was mid-30s – it was the sea-state. The waves were huge and as soon as I bore away the boat started getting rolled on its side. So I shut the hatch with myself inside.”

It was a dreadful experience but it has not put Merron off the race. Far from it. “Ha, ha,” she laughs when asked why she is going back to the north Atlantic for more, “because you never really remember exactly how awful it was and there were good moments as well. Why? Because it is a legendary race and I am sucker for punishment. The other thing is we don’t have that many solo races and the older I get, the better I get at solo sailing.”

Ce fut une expérience épouvantable, mais qui ne lui a pas fait perdre l’envie de courir, loin de là. “Haha”, s’esclaffe t’elle quand on lui demande si c’est pour cela qu’elle veut retourner dans l’Atlantique Nord. “On oublie toujours un peu à quel point c’était horrible. Et puis il y a eu de bons moments aussi. Pourquoi ? Parce que c’est une course de légende et je crois que j’aime bien me faire du mal !

Et puis il n’y a pas beaucoup de courses en solitaire, or plus je vieillis, plus je m’améliore en solitaire”.

Merron has never felt that, as a woman in a mainly man’s world, she is starting out with a disadvantage. In her view men and women can compete on equal terms in Class40s. “They are human-sized boats,” she said. “I think on a 40 it’s a level playing field. There are times when, sure, it would be nice to be bigger and stronger but actually there are plenty of ways round things. I really don’t feel that a woman has ever been at a disadvantage in a Class40.”

Sur un Class40, je ne me suis jamais sentie désavantagée en tant que femme”.

This year Merron had hoped to be on the startline with a real chance of putting in a competitive performance as she proudly flies the flag of Campagne de France, a high quality food co-operative based on the Cherbourg Peninsula. However, delays in the construction of her new, Mabiredesigned, Class40 at a yard in Caen means she is likely to only have just enough time to get her 1,000-mile qualifier in before she has to turn up at Saint-Malo, ready for the pre-race build-up.

“I will be ready for the race but the point is the boat is late so I am not going to know her very well,” she said. “I shall get to know her during The Transat which is a shame because it would be nice to go in with a good bit of preparation. The more you sail a boat the more you learn how to make it go and how hard you can push her ...that is where I will be lacking.”

The woman whose first ever sail was as a five-year-old in an Optimist on the River Seine south of Paris at a time when her father was working in France, is ready for another tough test on an ocean she knows all too well. She says the level of competition in the Class40 fleet improves with every race and she is expecting The Transat bakerly to be another full-on thrash. “Each race we are pushing harder and harder and harder,” she said.

One element she can’t wait for is the finish in the Big Apple. Merron has tasted the excitement of arriving in New York at the end of a race once before, when she finished the Atlantic Cup there in 2012, so she knows what to expect. “We arrived at one in the morning and it was incredible,” she said. “I think the choice of New York to finish the race is magic.”

“Je serai prête pour la course, mais le bateau a du retard donc je n’aurai pas le temps d’apprendre à bien le connaître” avoue t’elle. “Je le découvrirai pendant The Transat et c’est dommage parce que j’aurais bien aimé partir avec une bonne préparation. Plus on navigue, plus on sait comment faire marcher le bateau et plus on connait ses limites… C’est ce qui va me manquer”.

La navigatrice anglaise, qui a tiré ses premiers bord à 5 ans en Optimist sur la Seine dans le sud de Paris, alors que son père travaillait en France, se dit prête pour une nouvelle aventure sur l’Atlantique Nord qu’elle connaît déjà très bien. Selon elle, le niveau de compétitivité en Class40 est de plus en plus élevé et The Transat promet d’offrir une belle bagarre. “A chaque épreuve, on pousse de plus en plus fort”, confie-t-elle.

Ce qui l’enthousiasme, c’est l’arrivée à ‘Big Apple’. Miranda a déjà connu l’excitation d’une arrivée à New York, dans l’Atlantic Cup en 2012, donc elle sait à quoi s’attendre : “nous avions franchi la ligne à 1h du matin et c’était incroyable.

Je trouve que l’arrivée à New York est quelque chose de magique”.

The 2016 edition of The Transat bakerly marks a number of firsts. The first edition of The Transat in which all the boats will be equipped with AIS (Automatic Identification System), the first edition to feature a non-timed pre-start stage or warm-up, and the first edition to include monohulls with foils extending from their hulls.

In fact the race comes amid a foiling revolution in sailing with foiling now in vogue in the America’s Cup and the Extreme Sailing SeriesTM. Its introduction into the IMOCA class of 60ft monohulls, however, has not been without incident. In the first major transoceanic racing test of new foiling IMOCAs – the 2015 Transat Jacques Vabre (TJV) – several of the boats suffered structural failure and had to retire.

That race left some big questions to be answered by both skippers and designers as the class prepared for The Transat bakerly and the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world race that follows it. After the problems in the TJV the damaged boats went back into the shed for either re-design or strengthening work and The Transat will be the first big test of their new improved structures.

At the time of going to press it looked like three of the six IMOCAs in The Transat fleet will be using foils – Banque Populaire VIII, Edmond de Rothschild and St Michel–Virbac - while the remainder – SMA, PRB and 44 - will be in a more conventional configuration.

For neutral observers it will be fascinating to see how the foiling boats compare in performance with the others. They should be faster off the wind but may struggle to match the pace of the conventional boats to windward – which is likely to be the dominant sailing mode in the race – and heading downwind.

Cette course a laissé de grandes questions en suspens, aussi bien pour les skippers que pour les designers dans la mesure où la classe se prépare au Vendée Globe qui s’élancera à la fin de l’année des Sables d’Olonne. Après les problèmes rencontrés lors de la Transat Jacques Vabre, les bateaux endommagés sont rentrés en chantier pour redessiner certaines pièces ou renforcer les structures. La Transat bakerly va constituer un premier test à grande échelle pour ces bateaux.

Pour cette édition de la Transat Anglaise, la moitié de la flotte des IMOCA sera équipée de foils – Banque Populaire VIII, Edmond de Rothschild, et St Michel–Virbac - alors que les autres bateaux – SMA, PRB et 44, sont dans une configuration plus conventionnelle.

Pour les observateurs, il sera fascinant de comparer les performances des bateaux à foils avec celles des autres.

Ils devraient aller plus vite au portant mais pourraient être pénalisés pour se rapprocher du vent et c’est justement cette allure qui devrait dominer sur les 3 000 milles séparant Plymouth de New York.

It will be also be interesting to see how well the foiling boats cope with the structural stresses on their hulls associated with the foils and with the higher speeds and impacts the foils create.

Either way The Transat should provide a useful indication of which set-up is likely to do best in the Vendée Globe.

The build-up to The Transat in the IMOCA class was also marked by the serious accident to the SMA skipper Paul Meilhat who broke his pelvis in the mid-Atlantic while racing his boat from the Carribbean back to France. After Meilhat was airlifted off his yacht in mid-December, the boat was then adrift in the Atlantic for three weeks before being recovered close to the Irish coast in early January.

The SMA team then began a battle against the clock to completely re-fit the yacht, as Meilhat made a swift recovery from his injuries, in time to make the start of The Transat on May 2nd. Once again, at the time of going to press, there was every sign that they were going to make it.

Loïck Peyron has done it all in world sailing including winning The Transat three times, but the living legend of the sport from the Brittany village of Le Pouliguen, can barely conceal his excitement about his vintage assault on The Transat bakerly 2016.

Loïck Peyron a quasiment tout fait et tout vu dans le milieu de la voile, mais le triple vainqueur de l’épreuve ne peut cacher son enthousiasme à l’idée de repartir sur The Transat bakerly 2016, cette fois ‘à l’ancienne’.

Peyron will be sailing alongside the main race in Pen Duick II, one of six yachts raced and owned by his hero and the father of French offshore sailing, Eric Tabarly. It was Tabarly’s masterly performance in this boat in the second edition of The Transat in 1964 – then known as the OSTAR – when he won the race in 27 days, that set French sailing alight. The sport in France has never looked back.

Peyron’s goal is to use his voyage in a yacht he affectionately calls “an old lady” to help educate new generations to the story of pioneering solo sailors like Tabarly and his fellow competitor, the Canadian yachtsman Mike Birch.

“One of my goals is to put these guys back up in the spotlight because amnesia is the official sport on earth today and everything is running very fast. I think it is important that when you have some grey hairs like me you make an effort for these guys, especially Eric and Mike,” he said.

Il s’élancera en parallèle de l’épreuve officielle à bord du célèbre Pen Duick II, un des six bateaux d’Eric Tabarly. C’est sur ce même bateau que le père fondateur de la course au large française remportat la victoire en 27 jours dans la seconde édition de la Transat, connue alors sous le nom d’OSTAR. C’était en 1964 et c’est là que débuta la passion des Français pour la voile.

En partant sur ce bateau qu’il appelle affectueusement la “vieille dame”, Loïck Peyron souhaite faire connaître aux jeunes générations l’histoire des pionniers de la voile en solitaire comme Tabarly et son concurrent et ami Canadien Mike Birch.

“Un de mes objectifs est de redonner un coup de projecteur sur ces gars là car l’amnésie tend à devenir un sport officiel dans notre monde aujourd’hui et tout va très vite. Je crois qu’il est important, quand on a des cheveux blancs comme moi, de faire un effort pour rendre hommage à ces gens, surtout Eric et Mike”, a déclaré le marin de 56 ans.

“THE PLAN IS TO SAIL LIKE IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO AND TRY TO SHARE THE STORY USING MODERN TOOLS” Peyron who is a sprightly 56, will sail the 44ft wooden ketch that was designed by Tabarly and Gilles Constantini, in as close a configuration to the way Tabarly did as he can. He will not use roller-furling systems and will have to make all his headsail changes manually. He will also forego an electronic auto-pilot, opting instead for a modern equivalent of a Tabarly-era wind vane self-steering system.

“I want to sail in exactly the same way as Eric did,” explained the current Jules Verne Trophy holder for the fastest circumnavigation of the world. “So no furlers and exactly the same rig as it was. It won’t be easy because it is going to be a long voyage and it is going to be hard because The Transat is not an easy race, for sure. And that will be especially the case on this boat, set up like it was 50 years ago. It will be wet too.”

Peyron used a fascinating phrase to describe his enchantment with this project. He said he wants to “feel the beauty of the uncertainty” of the challenge of this Atlantic crossing, recapturing both what Tabarly must have felt voyaging into the unknown in the early 1960s and memories of his own early trans-Atlantic passages. “This is interesting for me,” he said.

While Peyron is used to racing the fastest yachts on the planet, this race, from Plymouth to New York, will be at 1964 pace with an average speed of the order of 5-to-5.5 knots. He wants to try and reach the finish by May 29th when some of the IMOCA 60s will be setting sail back to France.

The Pen Duick II skipper will have time on his hands to write about his experiences, but he has taken the precaution of selecting a comprehensive library of books to keep him entertained. “I have already chosen 30 books,” he said laughing. “I am not sure I am going to read one each day. The plan is to sail like it was 50 years ago and try to share the story using modern tools. Not many pictures perhaps, but plenty of writing. I want to write about what is happening and try to share with people what these guys were feeling 50 years ago.”

“Je veux naviguer exactement comme l’a fait Eric”, explique l’actuel détenteur du Trophée Jules Verne. “Donc il n’y aura pas d’enrouleur et le gréement sera exactement le même qu’à l’époque. Cela ne sera pas simple parce que la route est longue et bien sûr c’est une course très difficile, surtout sur un bateau comme celui-ci, configuré comme il y a 50 ans. Ce sera aussi très humide”.

Loïck Peyron a utilisé une très belle phrase pour décrire son plaisir de partir sur un tel projet. Il a dit qu’il voulait “ressentir la beauté de l’incertitude”, pour revivre ce que Tabarly a du connaître en partant vers l’inconnu au début des années 60 traverser l’Atlantique en solitaire. “Je trouve ça intéressant”, a-til ajouté.

Habitué à courir sur les bateaux les plus rapides du monde, le marin originaire du Pouliguen effectuera la traversée entre Plymouth et New York à une vitesse moyenne comprise entre 5 et 5,5 noeuds. Il espère franchir la ligne d’arrivée avant le 29 mai, date à laquelle plusieurs Open 60 repartiront vers la France.

Le skipper de Pen Duick II aura le temps d’écrire pour partager son expérience, mais il a également pris soin de choisir une belle bibliothèque pour s’occuper. “J’ai déjà sélectionné 30 livres”, avoue-t-il en riant. “Mais je ne suis pas sûr de pouvoir en lire un par jour ! LA TRANSAT BAKERLY APPORTE SON SOUTIEN À L’ASSOCIATION “ELLEN MACARTHUR CANCER TRUST”

Sixteen years ago a young Ellen MacArthur entered into the oldest single-handed sailing race - The Transat. Crossing the treacherous North Atlantic, she took the world by storm and at just 23 years old became the youngest ever winner of the race in the monohull division, beating many solo sailing heavy-weights to define her as a serious contender in solo offshore racing.

En l’an 2 000, la jeune Ellen MacArthur prend part à la plus vieille course transatlantique en solitaire : The Transat. Elle traverse les eaux tumultueuses de l’océan Atlantique nord et à seulement 23 ans, devient la plus jeune navigatrice à remporter cette course en monocoque, devançant de nombreux poids lourds de la voile.

Elle est depuis considérée comme une redoutable concurrente dans le monde de la course au large en solitaire.

Fast forward to 2016 and Ellen now focuses on a challenge of a different kind: Launched in 2003, the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people, aged between 8-24, in recovery from cancer, the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. The Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity working with every young persons Principal Treatment Centre and a growing number of Designated Units in the UK.

Mais c’est à un tout autre challenge qu’Ellen se consacre aujourd’hui. Lancé en 2003, « Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust » (The Trust) a pour objectif de donner aux jeunes âgés de 8 à 24 ans, en rémission du cancer, la chance de se reconstruire et de retrouver confiance en eux grâce à la voile. Cette initiative est devenue, au delà de toutes espérances, une association caritative nationale majeure en travaillant avec l’ensemble des jeunes membres des principaux centres de traitement de Grande Bretagne.

In 2016 the Trust is pleased to be named the Official UK Race Charity of the Transat bakerly. Ellen commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be announced as the Official UK Race Charity. The Transat forms a key chapter of my history and will provide an excellent platform to raise the profile of the Trust.”

Plymouth based Sue Allen, whose son Felix was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour in 2010, has been sailing with the Trust during his recovery from cancer since 2013. Sue commented: “It’s crucial that the Trust is supported in ways such as this as it shows children such as Felix that some challenges you can choose to take on and win.” She went on to emphasise: “It is hard to think of enough words to describe how much we appreciate all that the Trust has done for us, they have given Felix back his confidence not only in himself but also in life.” Felix, who is currently enjoying secondary school, is now aiming to become a volunteer for the Trust once he is old enough.
