INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) was established in 1958, originally under the name The Jamaica Institute of Technology. In 1959, the name was changed to the College of Arts Science and Technology (CAST). Granted University status in September 1995, UTech is at the pinnacle of technical education in the English-speaking Caribbean, providing managers and skilled professionals for Jamaica and the region in a wide diversity of disciplines. The campus of 18 hectares lies to the east of Hope Gardens on Old Hope Road. It is served by several bus routes, and is within walking distance of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, several churches and the growing shopping area of Papine.

For further information please contact the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), Academic Affairs Division, UTech, at 927-1680-8 ext. 3243.

SEMESTERIZATION

In the 2009/10 Academic Year the University embarked on another major step in semesterization: the introduction of flexibility in the delivery and scheduling of modules. This enables delivery of modules in undergraduate programmes in a way that permits flexible scheduling and improved accessibility for enrolment. It offers students some flexibility in selecting modules and allows them to pursue studies at their desired pace. Additionally, semesterization fosters cross-faculty integration amongst students and promotes efficient utilization of the University's resources.

Full-Time and Part-Time Status Students' status will be based on the number of credits taken per semester and not the time of day they attend classes. This means that a student has the option to enrol as a full-time or as a part-time student based on the number of credits that he/she chooses to take. A full-time student takes 12-18 credits in a given semester; whereas a part-time student takes 6-11. In situations where a student needs fewer than six credits to complete a course of study, it will be permissible to pursue these. Both full-time and part-time students will be able to choose their modules at any time of the day or evening. Fees are calculated on a per-credit basis.

FEES

The fees quoted in this brochure are estimated for Jamaican Residents for the summer 2009 session and first year students for academic year 2009/2010 as provided by the Finance and Business Services Department. A precise schedule of fees is normally available for summer 2010 by May 2010 and for 2010/2011 academic year by July 2010. The fees are estimated on the maximum number of credits plus other fees.

ACCOMMODATION

The University currently provides 395 residential facilities for full-time students. There are six halls of residence, namely Farquharson Hall and Hall F, which are male halls, and Garvey Hall, Hall A, B, and E which are female halls. Double and single occupancy are offered only on Halls A, B, and E. The fee is paid per semester; however, full payment can be made.

Boarding Application forms are attached to all undergraduate programme application forms. Interested persons are required to complete the form and return it to the Admission Office by January 28, each year.
