DESCRI “Water is life. Water is energy. Water is future“

Is an exchange that took place in Sarata Monteoru and Buzau between 30 august and 8 September 2017.Partnership consisted in 45 participants from 8 countries : Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Italy, Macedonia, Slovakia, Turkey and Romania, out of them 10 being with fewer opportunities. The context was linked with the problems generated by water quality due to irresponsible home and industrial consumption of water, using of chemicals in agriculture, chaotic tourism on seaside and regions with rivers and lakes, wasting of water in different situations. Aim of the project was to increase the responsibility of youngsters for environment sustainability and a better life quality by empowering fight against water pollution

The objectives were:

• to provide to 45 youngsters from 8 countries a common space to reflect on cultural diversity, European cooperation and healthy life style; • a better understanding by youngsters about role of water in life and society and about importance of protection and conservation of water; • a larger awareness of role of water’s energy

4

IPTION and the need of reduce wasting; • promote among youngsters a new responsible attitude for preservation of water and identify by creative methods new solutions for rise the sustainability of environment. The methodology was based on informal education and consisted in games, presentations, debates, role plays and simulations, workshops, visits, intercultural evenings.

How did the project come alive?

The organisers explained that the main idea was to create a youth exchange centered on each of the four elements: fire, water, air and earth. The first one, “Stories on the fire”, took place three years ago, the second one was the one we took part in, and the third one, “Love is in the air”, is being prepared. The fourth one will involve biogas and bioenergy. Besides, this exchange seemed like a good idea after a few others that took place in Romania, involving other types of liquids, like “Wine is fine” and Think before drink”.

Another interesting fact is that, when asked to take

pictures of things bothering them in the natural environment, many youngsters chose the garbage thrown into the water, so the idea of a project involving water pollution came only natural.

/ORGANIZERS Be different, be united

Everyone is different but, to work as a team, we have to find a way to communicate with each other. Understand the weaknesses and the strengths of the individuals was succeeded by some ice-breaking activities.

8

At first, presenting yourself, drawing a portrait and answering to some personal questions were some examples of team building activities.. Trust is built with team-activities like eggsercise. Morning energizers promoted teamwork, and gave us the chance to perceive each other’s different culture.

Let’s show you what happened A WALK IN MONTEORU:

We saw some of the swimming pools, with salty and sweet water, and a natural water source, the well with the so called: ‘’holy water”, said to be good for many diseases.

LAND ART We created in nature by using natural materials such as soil, rock (bed rock, boulders, stones),

9

organic media (logs, branches, leaves), and water with introduced materials such as concrete, metal, asphalt or mineral pigments In our case, the participants were split in 6 groups and were given the task to use their imagination to create pieces of land art based on the title of the project - “Water is life, water is energy, water is future”. The works remain in the nature and only photos are witnesses of group work. “The tree of hope” For me, this piece of art shows the idea that humans have used and abused the nature for centuries. Dead leaves symbolize all the damage done to the environment, whilst the green leaves represent hope(Raivis) “Border of humanity” I believe that making dams, like the one presented in our piece of land art, is not the greatest solution for saving water. I think that a good thing to do would be to avoid the overconsumption of water and energy. (Ozgun)

10

“Dominica’s waterfall” We tried to depict different states of nature. On one hand, the ones which are supported by water and, on the other hand, the ones which are not. (Poppy) “Magical well and the eco-fish” Our masterpiece tells a fairytale. Deep inside the dark forests of Romania a magical well is hidden, which hosts the eco-fish. He has the wonderful power to fulfill up to 8 wishes. Altogether represents life. (Anna) “Soshoshit” This piece of land art has a lot of symbols: the shoe represents all the people, the excrement the shitty people and the smashed bottle which pictures the people polluting the environment. The shoe is placed on the ground as if it is stepping on nature. The main idea: we are just looking at the problems and not doing anything to solve the situation. (Peters)

11

“Pearl House Our creation is just like a pearl, who wants to relax and think for the positive while being surrounded by water. (Rana)

POSTER PRESENTATION The importance of water in our lives was depicted by making some posters, and the creation was a combination of ideas that came from people from different countries and environments. Problems with water vary among the nations: Romania has the most polluted water in Europe, Cyprus faces water scarcity. Furthermore, water contributes to the economy of each country to a different extent: in industry, agriculture and tourism. Conversation tables Six moderators were chosen for this activity, and all the participants gathered around them, in groups. Every twenty min-

12

utes, the groups were changing, in order to cover all the subjects. Topics such as causes of water pollution, effects undrinkable water has on the population and environment and solutions to all this problems were discussed. At the end, the moderators were able to write a report, presenting the situation in front of everyone.

STUDY VISIT We arrived at the Muddy Volcanoes, where we were told a little about the natural resources beneath ground. After that, we arrived at the Siriu Dam where we were explained about the history of the local area, technical details of Dam, its output, efficiency etc. Both these visits were part of the learning process, putting an importance to the efficient usage of natural resources, especially water. We then had some stops to visit the artificial lake near the Dam. On the way back, we also

13

stopped in Nehoiu town for a short visit. Visit to the Dam also coincides with the motive of the project : “Water is life, water is energy, water is future. (Visit part)

THEATRE

We divided in two parts: the optimists and pessimists. The optimists through that the future will involve a better relationship between countries, and also between the members of families, because their desire for a better world

would have come true. On the other side, the pessimists imagined scenarios such as: a world where water is so expensive, it becomes business, a dark future where people eat each other to survive, and another one, where stealing each other’s last glass of water is very common. We once again realised that we are responsible for our own future and that if something turns wrong, we have no one to blame, but ourselves.

14

RESULTS

Gathering 45 youngsters from different cultural environments in such a beautiful place as Sarata

Monteoru, and giving them the opportunity to learn through non- formal education certainly helped developing a more responsible attitude regarding water pollution.

Creating land art made

us realize that we should be more

careful with the natural resources

and use them responsibly. Finding causes, effects and solutions to water pollution drew our attention to the

lack or decrease of drinkable water in some countries, which leads to population sickness, less factory efficiency, and, therefore, to an economical blow.

Of course, living and working

with different people from different countries taught us about

team work and diversity, about

other customs, how to split the tasks and work efficiently. The

quizzes and intercultural nights helped us find out more about

the other nations, in a funny and effective way. We

improved our communication skills, punctuality and public speaking.

In the end, everyone found out they are

more tolerant,

15

more talented, more hard-working and patient than they thought they were. We entertained ourselves and also found solutions to some of the problems we are confronting.

FIRST INTERCULTURAL EVENING The first intercultural evening meant that the participants got to taste some traditional dishes from various countries: Turkey, Estonia,Latvia, and sweets from Romania.
