This page Grandeur 1200 x 900mm, Mixed Media on Canvas Fan Shao Hua was born in China in 1963 and is now a Singaporean resident. Fan has participated in numerous exhibitions in Asia, and is the recipient of several awards including the 2000 Painting of the Year Award at the 19th UOB Painting of the Year Competition. He graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a BA in Fine Arts and is a member of the Singapore Art Society, Society of Chinese Artists, and of the Japan Modern Arts Association. He is currently teaching in the Singapore Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

Fan has participated in numerous exhibitions in Asia, including the 21st Japan Modern Arts Association Exhibition in Osaka in 2002 and the Worldwide Millennium Painting competition in London in 1999. He has also won the Tan Tze Chor award in 1998 and the Painting of the Year Award at the 19th UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 2000 for the work - They. He recently won a major award with International Artist, an American based art magazine for artists by artists. Fan has not remained complacent and as an artist, constantly strives to search inwardly and gain inspiration from his surroundings. As such, he has evolved as an artist; moving effortlessly from one distinct style and excelling in another. Developing from his acclaimed portraitures of dignitaries to his Realist paintings imbued with social commentary, Fan now explores Abstract Expressionism and Chinese Ink Painting in his latest series.

Tranquil 1200 x 1200mm, Mixed Media on Canvas His abstract works draw creative inspiration from the vastness of nature. It encapsulates the total uncertainty and everchanging atmospheric changes of the seasons, feelings, senses and ambience of the environment and one can see the pruning process in this series of works. It is the epitome of his unyielding perseverance and his courage to surpass his own limitations. His latest works are also an exploration of the lotus. His inspiration for the series stems from the Chinese Proverb – Chu Yu Wu Ni ER Bu Ran, describing the lotus that grows beautifully out of the mud untainted by the environment. All else that surrounds it contributes to the beauty of the flower whose growth is believed to hold a benign spiritual promise.

Breakaway 1200 x 1200mm, Mixed Media on Canvas On Fan’s canvases, he presents his ideas in a contemporary style that is still able to maintain its Chinese essence. Fan’s lotus series explores the flower in all its spiritual and philosophical meaning, depicting the beautiful symbolism of the lotus blooming resplendent out of the mud, in spite of its surroundings. Fusing Eastern and Western painting traditions; adopting an European photo-realistic technique of painting a crumpled paper effect in the background together with the traditions of Chinese Ink Painting with his expressive, bold strokes highlighting his strength as an accomplished artist.
