Take an inch... Blaze Towards Your Inch Loss Goal with Bellaze...
A
brand new, non-invasive inch loss clinic - the first of its kind in Northern Ireland – has arrived in Belfast with ambitions to give the city a leaner, more svelte silhouette. Bellaze, situated on Donegall Street in the city centre, uses the renowned Body Sculpting system from inch loss expert Tina O'Doherty's clinics in Scotland. Since opening her first clinic in Scotland ten years ago, a total of over 500,000 treatments have been completed on over 40,000 clients, with each losing an average number of 8-12 inches. Michael Curran, the person behind bringing Tina’s number one products to Ireland said: “We know that there is an appetite (if you’ll excuse the pun) for looking and feeling slim. It really makes such a difference to a person’s health, vitality and quality of life, so to achieve a slimmer silhouette in such an easy and low impact way is perfect for those who have a goal such as a wedding or just a longer term game plan to get fit and lose the bulge.” Lipo Sculpting is the first part of the treatment where a laser beam

is targeted on the area of the body identified to be treated. The cold laser beams penetrate the skin just deep enough to reach the layers of fat. When the light hits the fat cells, a rapid chain of events take place. Firstly, pores form on the cells and this causes the water, glycerol and fatty acids contained within the cells to spill out. This is then removed from the body through the lymphatic system and processed in the same way as fatty foods are digested. The remaining fat cells are significantly reduced in size. This is then followed by Electrolite and Thermoshape treatments that use electrical impulses and heat to work various targeted muscle groups. Electrolite was used originally for the healing of muscles and surrounding tissues, but it became apparent that the visual effect of this treatment was the
improvement of the body contours. At the average intensity setting, the exercise value derived from this 20 minute session will be equivalent to 4000 exercise movements (such as sit-ups or push-ups). This all takes place while relaxing watching television or reading a magazine in the brand new, state of the art city centre clinic. Thermoshape is also carried out at the same time as the Electrolite treatment and uses relaxing therapeutic heat. Heating the muscles produces an increased blood flow similar to that seen during exercise. To get the most benefit out of these treatments, it is recommended that clients use one of the Body Sculpting courses

WORDS: Cathy Martin This month I talk mostly hair. I have a long, thick mane of hair which I’m very often complimented on, but it does have its downsides, in that, it is a marathon to wash, condition and dry in anything less than 45 minutes, so I often leave that task to the experts at one of our city’s many hair salons. A weekly blow dry sets me up for the weekend and is a beauty indulgence I just couldn’t do without. (Does that sound a bit ‘first world problems’? Because I don’t mean it to!) Anyhow, let’s talk tresses. I’ve been to a few salons this month – each for a specific need – and have been very happily rewarded with great service and professionalism in each. First up, I visited beauHAUS in Arthur Street just beside Una Rodden’s studio and store. A really spacious salon, (which was formerly known as Paul Shappiro) I was immediately at home with the buzz and the vibe – everyone was so relaxed. Maybe it was the Spotify sound system
which allows customers to tap into their favourite tunes while relaxing? For me, having just spent a tiresome five days looking after a sick daughter as well as trying to run a business, I felt really exhausted and just needed a bit of a beauty boost to lift myself up again. Well, BeauHaus (French/ German translation for beautiful place) certainly sorted me out as they are experts in express beauty and hair packages. First up, I had a fab manicure with yummy mummy manicurist Rehana, who has been with beauHAUS since day one. We chose a dark grey/navy mix colour for my BioSculpture nails and I am delighted that she shaped them up in preparation for growth and the three weeks I’m expected to get out of the gels. I loved how she had just the right blend of chat and getting on with the job in hand - we did have a giggle about certain TV shows and even shared parenting experiences - but what I liked most was that she made a really great manicure

out of very tired, brittle and uneven nails. Next up, I was brought to Katie in hair, who blow dried my tired and ‘bush-backwards’ looking barnett to glossy fabulousness. Despite what was some pretty obvious regrowth as well as darker roots showing, Katie shaped me up to hide away any loose or stray coloured hairs in my parting and smoothed me out using the steam pod straighteners (amazingly different on your hair compared to traditional or even ceramic straighteners). I’m told she is also a whiz at upstyles, so for anyone looking for a modern formal or prom style, Katie is your gal! I could have stayed all afternoon and topped up
16
the pampering with brow shaping and tinting, Vita Liberata tan and much more, but the quick hour in their very capable hands left me happy and a whole lot better looking, dare I say it! A few days later, still with my aforementioned roots at the front of my mind (or more precisely, at the top of my head) I made an appointment for a quick demo of a wondrous new hair product called WOW, available exclusively at Jason Shankey’s salons across NI. In short, WOW is like an eyeshadow palette which is tailor-matched to your hair colour and it basically fills in and colours your roots between salon colour. The before and after pictures, taken at Jason’s House of Fraser
ULSTER LIFE
salon, should tell a tale in themselves, but I love the idea of the product – plus, its simplicity and speed mean that it is an excellent quick-fix product for those on the go and ladies like me, who don’t often get time for a three hour colour appointment. Last minute invitation + roots often means turning down a night out for some, but my super quick blow dry and demo had me in and out and party ready in just over half an hour. Result! My third and final salon visit this month was to the emporium that is the Andrew Mulvenna spa in Cromac Street. I work with Andrew a lot as hair partner to FASHIONWEEK, and I see his hard-working team pull off some really
creative stuff at shows and shoots, but for me, the colour change on my hair when I started going to his salon a year ago was something else. The new L’Oreal non-ammonia products mean my highlighted hair doesn’t ever look yellow or feel dry, hard and straw-like. The salon itself is designed beautifully and I quite often feel a million miles away as I tap on my laptop while the stylists and colourists work their magic. In fact, I think that’s the beauty of the service and the secret of the interior design. I can bury my head in my laptop for a few quiet hours and look in the mirror when it’s all done a while later feeling fabulous. And as they say – ‘because I’m worth it!’

One man’s Junk... Rosanna Davison Unveiled as New Fashion Judge
J
unk Kouture, Ireland’s best recycled fashion competition, returns for a fourth year and brings with it a new face on the judging panel in the form of former Miss World, Rosanna Davison. Rosanna will bring a touch of glamour and worldly fashion knowledge to the already impressive judging line-up, which includes the much loved stylist and TV Presenter, Darren Kennedy, Art and Design educator, Tracy Fahey and environmental awareness expert, Yvonne Holmes. Junk Kouture’s four expert judges will be responsible for finding and crowning the winner of Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition 2014 which is proudly supported by Bank of Ireland and European Recycling Platform (ERP), the only pan-European compliance scheme for electronic waste and battery recycling. Last Friday, (24th January) marked the opening of online registration for the talented students across the North and South of Ireland, who are hoping to be a part of Junk Kouture 2014. Elizabeth Curran, co-founder of Junk Kouture said, ‘We’re thrilled to finally announce this year’s judging panel. Each of our judges will bring unrivalled knowledge
20
of their diverse backgrounds to the competition, which we feel guarantees an admirable judging panel for teenagers entering the competition this year.’ The judges also gave us a sneak peek into what exactly they will be looking for from this year’s entrants. Rosanna Davison who has spent years in the fashion industry, fronting high-end designer campaigns, both as a model and brand ambassador, will be looking out for creations that truly belong on the catwalk or on the front cover of a glossy magazine. ITV This Morning’s style presenter, Darren Kennedy, is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s top style influencers and will be bringing his sharp fashion sense and keen eye to the judging panel. Tracy Fahey from the Limerick School of Art and Design is Head of the Department of Art and Design will separate
the junk from the Junk Kouture and will be looking for something ‘different’. Last but by no means least, Yvonne Holmes who is Head of Corporate Communications for ERP, will be watching out for the outfits that best promote sustainability, incorporate used materials effectively and of course the clever usage of WEEE waste in the Junk Kouture submissions. Our panel will make their first appearances in March as they judge the junk in regional finals around the country, before crowning the Junk Kouture winner 2014 in an extravagant grand final in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on 02 May. Junk Kouture has seen thousands of recycled creations by secondary school students

‘BLOOM BOOM’
A leading stylist in Northern Ireland, Eve has a wealth of experience in the industry. Each month she offers a fashion focus into the most coveted designers, trends and styles of the season. You can’t go wrong with florals for spring, right? This season they have made an elegant triumphant return, as our summer staple once again is revived and revitalised. They have evolved and burst into bloom as you’ve never seen them before. Think dissected stems, wild hibiscus, abstract Hawaiian prints and 3D petal textures. Matching or clashing, anything goes. This time there’s nothing prissy about SS14’s petals. Across

At London Fashion Week Christopher Kane explored the sexual element of flowers and their anatomy, in his subversive yet entirely captivating take on the traditional print. River Medical
Top Cosmetic Surgery Company To Open In Northern Ireland
B
elfast is to welcome a top Dublin based cosmetic surgery company, River Medical, which will open its brand new clinic on the Lisburn Road this month (March 2014) following a growing demand for both surgical and non surgical cosmetic care across Ireland. According to the most recent survey carried out by the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, the popularity of cosmetic surgery continues to rise with more than 50,000* cosmetic surgery procedures carried out in the UK last year. Breast augmentation continues to be the most popular, with over 11,000* procedures carried out in 2013, but liposuction saw the biggest rise with a 41%* increase in liposuction procedures. However, although the clinic will offer a wide variety of cosmetic surgery procedures including the popular choices of breast implants, eyelid surgery and facelifts, it says the demand for non surgical cosmetic procedures including
46
skincare treatments such as Thermage, Flaxel and Hydrafacials was up by 30% last year. These treatments popular with celebrities such Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow, are encouraging both women and men to look after their skin and maintain a youthful look without going under the knife. The clinic is confident its non cosmetic offerings will be a big hit in the north as it offers a range of revolutionary treatments which are unavailable anywhere else in Northern Ireland. Aoibhin Cronin, Clinic Manager of the new Belfast branch said: "There’s no denying that more people are taking a greater interest in the way they look and the general view of cosmetic care has certainly changed over the past few years. It’s now more accessible than ever before, it’s not as expensive as people think and, having spoken regularly to our customers, we know there is a demand for it. “River Medical provides a very
advanced service using cutting edge technology and FDA approved products. All non surgical treatments are administered by registered nurses ensuring safe and superior results which continually exceed patients’ expectations. Our clinic in Dublin has been very

successful, with word of mouth referrals increased by 45%** in the past year. We cater for a very wide market - whether you‘re an older man or woman who wants to target aging or other skin problems, or a bride to be with a wedding dress or honeymoon
body in mind; or even a younger person who wants to invest in their skin – we have a comprehensive mix suitable to all needs.” River Medical’s Belfast clinic will open its doors on 31 March and all treatments within the clinic will be carried out by a nurse or a doctor.

Big Bus Sets Off For Balmoral Show Minister for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Michelle O’Neill MLA has launched Action Cancer’s Big Bus from Parliament Buildings, Stormont, setting it off on its way to the Balmoral Show. The Big Bus, an 18 metre-long articulated vehicle with expanding side pods, will be based at the Balmoral Show on 14-16th May 2014 with the aim of encouraging show goers to take stock of their health. Free services provided on the Big Bus, sponsored by SuperValu and its independent retailers, include M.O.T. health checks for men and women (16 plus) and digital breast screening for women aged 40-49 and 70 plus (outside of NHS screening age).

Gareth Kirk, Action Cancer Chief Executive said: “Since 2006 we have provided over 24,500 breast screenings and 13,700 M.O.T. health checks on board our Big Bus which travels to around 220 locations throughout Northern Ireland every year. We are particularly keen to raise awareness of our men’s health check programme in rural areas and amongst the wider agri-sector. To continue to build our rural links we plan to take the Big Bus to this year’s Balmoral Show to offer free ‘pop up’ health checks to men and free breast screening and health checks to women attending the show.” Minister O’Neill commented; “The health and wellbeing of our rural communities is an issue close
to my heart and I am pleased that Action Cancer’s Big Bus will be located at this year’s Balmoral Show as part of their continued support for rural communities. “With such large numbers of visitors attending the Show each year it provides a further opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of health checks and screening services and I would encourage visitors to take the time to ‘pop in’ to the Big Bus and avail of this excellent service.” The main sponsor of the Big Bus, retail group SuperValu and its independent retail partners,

ULSTER HEALTH
Back To Basics
By Eve Brannon Sponsored by BODY VIBES When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, the only thing more important than exercise, is diet. You can workout around the clock, but if your food choices are poor, it’s unlikely you will reap the rewards. Learning to make healthier choices about how you fuel your body with the right foods is essential to a healthy body and fit physique. What does ‘eating clean’ mean and how does it affect your weight loss and health? Clean eating revolves around eating ‘whole foods’ that are fresh, nutritious and unrefined. They are as near to their original state as possible, i.e. an egg, an apple, a nut. They are still in their natural form, without additives or any processing. After years of an unbalanced diet and yo-yo weight loss, I fully embraced the methods of
52
clean eating 10 months ago and haven’t looked back. No matter what your fitness goal is, you will always benefit from eating a lot of veggies, fruit, complete proteins and healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, oily fish). Protein is key as it increases lean muscle, prevents muscle breakdown and will leave you feeling fuller for longer. Our Western diet often means meals are based around simple carbs, processed foods and sugars: all laden with hidden fat stores. Instead, my daily goal is to include a protein as a base of each meal. For me that looks like: •E ggs at breakfast (omelette, poached, scrambled) •T una, salmon or mackerel for lunch (a large salad) •C hicken or turkey for dinner (with roast or steamed veggies)
CLEAN EATING TOP TIPS
1. Fill your trolley with ‘whole foods’ of one ingredient and get creative 2. Limit or cut down on processed foods: any food that has a label 3. Eliminate refined sugar: refined sugar provides nothing but calories 4. Cook your own meals. Instead of buying meals in a box, cook meals from scratch 5. Preparation is key: where possible write a shopping list and plan your meals 6. Bump up your veggies: full of vitamins & nutrients 7. Avoid saturated fats and stick to ‘healthy fats’
ULSTER HEALTH
THIS MONTH’S GOAL:
Aim to drink your 2litres of water a day, improving your metabolism & your complexion
MYTH:
RECIPE:
Start your day off right! Inject protein into your breakfast, instead of a sugarladen processed breakfast cereal • 2 eggs, spinach, pepper, red onion & mushroom omelette • Roughly chop veg, add to a medium heat pan and cook slowly. Once tender, add 2 beaten eggs and season with salt & pepper. When turning golden flip or fold in pan and cook until lightly browned… serve!
Counting calories counts – forget the maths for now and focus on clean eating
