Don’t breed problems for later – neuter now!
T
he UK’s leading feline welfare charity is urging cat owners to get their cats snipped or spayed as soon as possible under their Assisted Neutering Scheme. Most vets in Northern Ireland can offer neutering for only £5 to people in receipt of a pension or certain benefits. Cats Protection’s Belfast Adoption Centre works hard to try and find loving homes for every feline that comes into its care but one of the charity’s main aims is to encourage the neutering of cats and kittens to ensure there will be fewer unwanted felines in the future. “Neutering offers many benefits to cats and owners alike,” explains
Siobhan McHaffie, Northern Ireland Operations Manager for Cats Protection. “A neutered cat is less likely to spray, less likely to roam and also less likely to fight. Neutering also helps guard against disease as fighting cats are more at risk of life-threatening diseases that can be transmitted through biting and saliva.” Cats Protection recommends that cats and kittens are neutered from around four months of age. Cat owners on a limited income who need to have their pet neutered are urged to contact their local vet for details of how the charity can assist. For only £5 you could protect your pet and have peace of mind.

Over 300 VIP’s and local stakeholders were offered a sneak peek of the extensively redeveloped eatery, named the Castle Kitchen & Bar, which opens its doors to the public today ahead of the NI Open 2018 golf championship that begins next week. The £600,000 investment by Galgorm in the bar and restaurant will create 50 new jobs across the food, beverage and frontof-house departments. The venue now offers a 150-seat BBQ smokehouse restaurant, as well as a 60-seat balcony terrace

Black Bush Cured’ charcuterie masterclass at D.I.V.E Belfast ‘Black Bush Cured’, a collaboration from Irish charcuterie master Rob Krawczyk and Bushmills Irish Whiskey, took place this week in D.I.V.E Belfast as part of the #BlackBushStories event series. The talented, second-generation chef shared an insight into his inspiring career journey and presented a hands-on charcuterie masterclass where attendees were shown how to cure and smoke meat. Attendees also enjoyed an educational tasting session on some of Bushmills’ best loved whiskeys as well as sampling Black Bush expertly paired with one of Rob’s own creations – Black Bush Spiced Beef. The #BlackBushStories collaboration series celebrates the stories and talents of independent, spirited and extraordinary Irish individuals who challenge traditional thinking in their fields and live outside the box. The next event will take place on 30th August and will be a collaboration with leather maker, Jason Karayiannis, the driving force behind Father’s Father.

eading, local cancer charity, Action Cancer is encouraging men throughout Northern Ireland to pay more attention to their health and book a free MOT health check. Charles Hurst Toyota and Action Cancer recently announced a yearlong partnership aimed at raising awareness and funds for the charity’s range of cancer prevention, early detection and support services. The charity’s Big Bus is contributing to Charles Hurst health and wellbeing programme by providing free health checks and breast screenings for staff and customers. So in effect, Action Cancer have been MOTing the MOT guys! Action Cancer is encouraging men to treat their body like a good car; service it regularly and it will be less likely to break down! Technician Charles Hurst Toyota Technician, Matthew Morgan, who recently availed of a health check said, “My health check only took 20 minutes and it gave me a snap shot of my current health as well as advice on where I can make improvements and reduce my cancer risk. I learned about the signs and symptoms of male specific cancers, such as testicular and prostate cancers. It also has given me a starting point and the motivation to improve my diet and exercise routine and skip some of my old habits.” Anne Thompson, Action Cancer’s Health Promotion Officer said, “Every year in Northern Ireland there are approximately 4,607 men diagnosed with cancer1 - that’s 12 men every day. Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, eating an unhealthy diet and not getting enough exercise, could be

contributing to this cancer incidence. Although men are 14% more likely than women to develop cancer, they are 37% more likely to die from the disease2. A reluctance to discuss personal health matters and not monitoring their health could mean men are at higher chance of not detecting cancer or other serious conditions at an early and, hopefully, more treatable stage. It is estimated over half of all cancers could be prevented with the right lifestyle choices, such as not smoking, being safe in the sun, drinking alcohol responsibly, eating a healthy diet and taking regular exercise. Our MOT health checks can empower guys to make more positive lifestyle choices in the future.” The free MOT health checks incorporate a number of assessments including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and body composition analysis, as well as giving lifestyle advice and information on testicular, prostate, lung and bowel cancers. These checks do not diagnose cancer but aim to increase awareness of current health, highlight ways to help prevent cancer and the importance of early detection. them through a process where they begin to dream big – something I encourage. I do not focus on the past or on problems – coaching is solutions focused and may not actually be a service that would help someone who is depressed or suffer from anxiety or any other mental illness. I would recommend a Counsellor in this instance. But my experience in mental health is helpful – my interest in in getting someone the best and most appropriate support and this may mean me advising potential clients to first visit their GP for advice. What tips would you have for leading a more content life? There are the top 10 tips, the top 100 tips, the top 500 tips and so on – but I think finding your true self and living in tune with that self is really important. Cultivating kindness to yourself and others. Practising gratitude and compassion. It is about being open to new experiences, protecting your mental health and actively putting strategies in place that you can commit to and that are good for you physically, emotionally and mentally. For example, taking notice as I mentioned above. We are so caught up in technology that we don’t even notice that the cherry blossoms are out at this time of year. But taking notice of things like this has a really positive impact on our wellbeing. And connecting with others - we don’t take time to connect with those around us – we’re far to busy on our mobile. We sit at the dinner table and don’t engage
in conversation with our family – and our wellbeing suffers. So my top tips would be in line with the five steps to wellbeing, these are based on evidence, backed by the PHA – and they are so simple it would be difficult to find such a simple way of looking after your mental health. When do you think coaching is most beneficial? Coaching is beneficial in lots of different circumstances. It is an excellent way to help you achieve work life balance, deal with major changes in your life, help you with your career and performance, relationships and dating, breaking negative habits, developing self-confidence and improving esteem. Overall, I believe coaching is a powerful tool to help people get out of their own very busy heads and have space to identify and focus on areas in life that they want to work on. With support they will see their own unique path for achieving personal success and it is this support and guidance that is so key to the success of a coaching relationship. What does the future hold for At One Wellbeing …. I’m excited to have established the business in the first instance. And I’m currently coaching myself to dream big! I’ll let you know how that’s all going but I imagine that within the next two to three years I will have established a wellbeing hub offering a full range of services that offer most benefit to people who are seeking to make change and enjoy authentic and full lives.

Ulster life gets behind the wheel of the hugely popular 2018 Mazda 6 available to order now from Walter young Mazda Broughshane. The refreshed Mazda 6 is an fantastic family saloon, retaining its clear dynamic edge over the competition. While being great to drive, it also takes the fight to the VW from a quality standpoint, thanks to its smartly updated and much more modern feeling cabin. Despite its age relative to fresher competition like the Volkswagen Passat and Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport, it’s a car we rate quite highly, thanks mostly to the fact that it’s still one of
the best saloons to drive and that includes the company of Audi, BMW and Mercedes premium brands. Very little changes design wise from the outside for the refresh.You’ll notice the new grille, which is deeper set and shinier than before with a new mesh, while updated headlights surrounded by a bit more chrome appear too. A few minor changes appear at the back in the form of a subtly redesigned rear bumper and boot lid, but the big news with this facelift is found in the cabin and under the bonnet – the interior has been refreshed again, while a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine joins the line up.

The fresh unit isn’t all that new and is already equipped in the huge CX-9 SUV which isn’t available in the UK, plus the smaller CX-5 in certain markets. It seems to fly in the face of the current downsizing and turbocharging trends as well – 2.0 litres is as big as nearly all the Mazda’s four-cylinder rivals go. Given that this is a naturally aspirated engine too, there’s a definite old-school feel to the proposition. What isn’t old-school is the cylinderdeactivation technology this engine is equipped with. Between 25mph and 50mph, two cylinders can drop out of operation to save fuel. It works well, and you’ll struggle to notice the times when the engine is running at half its capacity. Claiming just over 42mpg on the combined cycle it isn’t actually that much thirstier than the smaller 2.0-litre petrol options Mazda offers as a result. We’d still probably opt for the smaller engine
though. Despite having 191bhp on tap, this 2.5-litre unit musters up just 258Nm of torque – not a huge figure in these turbocharged times. Out of its peak spot around 4,000rpm it doesn’t feel significantly faster than the cheaper 163bhp, 213Nm 2.0-litre car, which revs out more sweetly too. Two turbocharged 2.2-litre diesel options will cater for buyers seeking pulling power. They’ll arrive in September, equipped with selective catalytic reduction via a tank of Adblue, with the most powerful version now developing 181bhp. The 2.5-litre is at least smooth and quiet when cruising along, only becoming noticeably audible if you stand on the throttle. As such, it’s an easy car to live with on the motorway. The six-speed automatic equipped on our car didn’t seem slow-witted in any way, but the Mazda 6’s standard six-speed manual is slick to shift, and probably worth sticking with for most.

Mazda has revised the steering and suspension on the updated car in a bid to keep it at the front of the pack for driving fun.You’d probably have to drive old and new back to back to find the difference, but regardless, the Mazda 6 is still a top saloon for drivers. Accomplished, sharp steering makes placing it around bends fun, and while the suspension set-up is slightly firmer than rivals, there’s a real fluency to the way this car flows down minor bumpier roads. In the cabin, a redesign of the centre console layout, now with a smaller panel for climate control buttons, results in a decluttered offering. On high spec GT Sport Nav+ cars like the one we drove it feels pretty premium in there too, solidly built and using nice materials including Nappa leather and real wood trim. Space for four adults is good. Elsewhere, on high spec cars a seven-inch colour display is integrated into the instrument panel – lower down the range, cars stick with
analogue dials. It’s not quite a system to rival the full width digital panels in rivals like Audi’s market leading Virtual Cockpit set-up, but it’s sharp, and a welcome addition on the tech side of things. The infotainment display grows to eight inches with this facelift and it remains an easy system to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility will be available as options later. A head up display is now standard on all models though, and most versions are well equipped for the money. Mazda has increased the amount of safety and assistance features fitted by default too, with blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, radar cruise control, lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking fitted across the range.
