The Spectator Type: Short A spectator ruins the queen stage of the Tour de France. Plot: It’s the queen stage of the Tour de France. Not far from the finish, the Yellow Jersey decides to attack and break away. Meanwhile, a stectator is waiting to see the race winner at the finish line. While he waits, he casually picks his nose, and flicks his booger away. The booger lands on the road before the finish line. The Yellow Jersey approaches the finish line with a chase group behind him; he’s confident that he will win the stage and the Tour. But as he is about to cross the finish line, his front wheel sticks to the booger. The booger does not let go of the bike, throwing the race leader back at the chase group. This results in a massive crash, destroying the Yellow Jersey’s hopes for the biggest win of his life, and blocking the road for all other racers. Doctors carry the Yellow Jersey past the spectator, who does not realize his fault. He keeps picking his nose and flicks another booger, which lands on the lens of our camera. Moral: Silly behavior of spectators can easily injure racers and end their careers.

Suffocation Type: Short Man gets lung disease and can’t face his new life. Plot: The protagonist unsuspectingly swallows an infectious cell, which starts dividing on its way down his respiratory system. Shortly after the incident, he goes out for a bike ride. He’s still unaware of his illness. As he rides, he gets a coughing fit, which results in him collapsing. Passers-by call an ambulance. At the hospital he is diagnosed; his life changes right then and there. Days at the hospital are unbearably uniform: medication, rest, and restriction. Friends call him, but he can only cough in reply. One day he becomes frustrated. He looks out the window and sees a cyclist, who reminds him of his life before the illness. He gets back into his hospital bed, but he can’t stop thinking about freedom. By night, these thoughts become obsessive and he decides to break free. He jumps out the window and runs into the night. He runs, breathes the fragranced air, overcome with joy... but suddenly he starts coughing up sputum. A big pile of it accumulates on the ground. It starts moving and shaping itself into a human-like figure; it attacks the man and suffocates him to death. After the murder, the sputum-creature walks among people and gets on the bus, looking for his next victim. 8

Plot: Two mountaineer friends set out to conquer the peak of a tall snowy mountain. As they approach the peak, Mountaineer Girl loses her shoe; she cannot continue the ascent without it. Mountaineer Boy returns to find the shoe. He presses a button on his ice axe; it releases air balloons, which lift him into the air. While flying, he spots the shoe’s trace in the snow, and a line of mysterious traces coming from it. The traces lead him to a cave. Mountaineer Boy thinks that a bear took his friend’s shoe, and bravely enters the cave to fight for it. In the darkness, he discovers that the shoe was taken by a group of pine cones, who gladly return it. Meanwhile, an avalanche starts sliding down the slope of the mountain. It takes Mountaineer Girl with it, but Mountaineer Boy flies by just in time to rescue her. They land on the spot where she’d lost her shoe, continue the ascent from there, and conquer the mountain as true sportsmen. Volokhatyi Didko Didko is a creature from slavic mythology. He is a general representation of evil, prominent in both pagan and christian tradition. In Ukrainian literature he is depicted as having a human-like body heavily covered in black fur, trotters for feet and a snout for a nose. In the animation he walks through a field of blood-red crops, under a blood-red sky, then stops and stares at the viewer with his hellish eyes. This clip explores the eastern European imagery for demonic creatures. It was created to challenge the western understanding of fear, and to popularize Ukrainian culture worldwide.

Pysanka
The egg is a mythological embodiment of the source of life, and the beginning of the universe across many cultures. Pysanka is the Ukrainian art of decorating Easter eggs with traditional symbols. It is closely connected to religious rituals, and in the Soviet era it was banned. After the dissolution of the Union, the art has returned. Today Ukrainians bring decorated eggs to church on Easter morning to get them sprikled with holy water. In this project, I present a contemporary interpretation of traditional abstract motifs, making them almost uncomfortably figurative. Nude bodies of a woman and a man are connected 22
by their hands and feet, forming the Cyrillic letter ‘X’ (kh) in top view. This letter is traditionally incorporated into Pysanka designs, as the first letter of the word ‘Christ’ (Христос), which also resembles a cross. Seemingly a provocation, but in fact, it is a three-dimensional icon, which symbolizes the beginning of human life. It emphasizes equality and cooperation between genders. This egg has been through the sacred ritual on Easter morning of 2018. The animation is a stop-motion of the egg revolving in a continuous loop, which is intended to be exhibited in a contemporary gallery environment.

Mobile Animation With the improvement of mobile technology, films shot using only a smartphone have become a popular genre. I believe that mobile animation has its place among other techniques, and creating a competitive independent mobile animated film is one of the things I’d like to try. The medium gives unique freedom of drawing compelling stories with the sole use of a smartphone, allowing the creator to concentrate on the process anywhere, anytime. Today, in developed parts of the world people casually carry their own screens in their pockets, so I’m convinced that creating animated films with a smartphone for this type of viewing is a logical consequence of technological advancement.
