Her recent article in Security InfoWatch provided valuable information on this topic. “Much of the action taken by healthcare providers occurs within the information technology area. However, the electronic safeguards are only as good as the physical and administrative processes which surround those electronic processes. It is within these physical and administrative processes that the healthcare security department’s involvement is vital,” Lisa explains. ODS management and security officers understand, respect, and adhere to the requirements and expectations of all privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations. Maintaining a safe, secure and private patient care environment is of utmost importance. Patient- and Family-Centered Care How does your security provider respond to the Patient- and Family-Centered Care (PFCC) approach? ODS is 100% committed and devoted to delivering security services that adhere to every aspect of PFCC. Our approach to delivering and responding to security in the healthcare environment encompasses all the concepts of PFCC.
The Institute for PFCC The Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care defines this approach as:
Patient- and family-centered care is an approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among health care providers, patients, and families. It redefines the relationships in health care. Patient- and family-centered practitioners recognize the vital role that families play in ensuring the health and well-being of infants, children, adolescents, and family members of all ages. They acknowledge that emotional, social, and developmental support are integral components of health care. They promote the health and well-being of individuals and families and restore dignity and control to them. Patient- and family-centered care is an approach to health care that shapes policies, programs, facility design, and staff day-to-day interactions. It leads to better health outcomes and wiser allocation of resources, and greater patient and family satisfaction. According to the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care, HIPAA and PFCC offer many benefits to those who embrace the concepts. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portabiity and Accountability
Act) was established to facilitate the transformation of the healthcare delivery system as technology and information evolved. It took place on April 14, 2001 and it ensures privacy protections for patients by limiting how sensitive patient health information is used and distributed. At ODS, we always respect provider, patient, and family privacy, while providing optimal levels of safety and security services. Our services lend support to both HIPAA and PFCC in the sensitive healthcare environment. All of our ODS training embraces these concepts to ensure all management and employees are well-trained and experienced in delivering this type of service. Seamless and non-threatening integration of our security services team requires an emphasis on PFCC and we know that it makes a difference in the service we deliver. Healthcare organizations are embedding and integrating PFCC concepts into their organization. They are incorporated into the guidelines and standards of practice for healthcare facilities. We know this – and we respond by taking the same steps to embed them into our training too. We know that security is a vital function that can be delivered in a way that ensures the health and well-being of individuals and families is maintained as much as possible – and this also means respecting the dignity of everyone. The commitment of our leaders and employees will further enhance and advance the practice of Patient- and Family-Centered Care within each client organization. We will do our part to facilitate change needed to focus on this concept to help our clients exceed the expectations of their providers, patients, and the families they serve. For more information, visit: www.ipfcc.org/faq.html.
