2012 PREVIEW
Head Coach Jonathan Meade has reason to be optimistic for 2012. Meade, now in his fourth season, guided the Panthers to a stellar 2011 campaign and hopes for another excellent season are more reality than dream.
Leading the pack is Augusta. Augusta finished the 2011 season third on the team in goals scored with four, three of which were game-winning, two assists and 11 shots on goal.
The Panthers finished 2011 with an impressive overall record of 10-6-3, which included a league mark of 8-4-2, and a GLIAC South Division championship. A remarkable feat, when one considers that the team only began playing at the NCAA Division II level in 2010, and faced a schedule stacked with difficult opponents.
Sophomores With eight experienced upperclassmen returning, Meade and company will look to these youngsters to contribute their skills and expertise to the field this year. Returning for the 2012 season are standouts midfielder Jordan Mazzi (Galena, Ohio), midfielder Broegan Sautter (Bellville, Ohio) and goalkeeper Laura Clark (Lapper, Mich.). Mazzi appeared in 19 games for the Panthers, scored three goals, three assists and totaled 19 shots as a freshman. Sautter played in 18 games, started eight and tallied one goal, two assists and four points during her freshman campaign.
Highlights of last year’s great run included a nine game win streak and advancing to the semifinals of the GLIAC Tournament, where the second-seeded Black and Gold faced third-seeded Ashland University. The match came down to penalty kicks and the Eagles came away with the upset 4-3. Ohio Dominican lost five girls to graduation, including all-time assist leader Sierra Patterson. Last season, Patterson started 17 games for the Panthers, ranked second on the team in goals with six, tied for first in assists (six) and game-winners (three), including an overtime score that lifted the Panthers over Ashland during the regular season. Other key losses are Jill Davis, Slone Fleak and Marie Fudacz.
Clark, who had big shoes to fill after taking over in goal for Aimee Simonet, didn’t disappoint. Clark started in 17 of the 19 games for the Black and Gold and amassed an 8-5-2 record, 65 saves, 0.64 goals against average with a .844 save percentage. She was at the top of the GLIAC statistics in most categories for a goalie, as she was second in goals allowed with 12 (0.64%), third in save percentage (.844) and second in shutouts with 9.0 (.50 Sho/G).
“I am excited for this team as we had a productive and enthusiastic offseason that has pushed us to be ready for this season,” Meade said. “Add in a solid freshman class and I believe this team has the capability to be very competitive.
More impressively, Clark went 671:44 minutes of consecutive shutout minutes throughout eight contests from Oct. 5-28. The streak moved her into 24th all-time in Division II record book for the longest streak by a goalkeeper.
Seniors ODU welcomes back four seniors in midfielder Jennifer Holton (Johnstown, Ohio), defender Megan Wharton (Pickerington, Ohio), forward Jessica D’Isidoro (Twinsburg, Ohio) and defender Shara Perry (Hilliard, Ohio). Holton was honored with an All-GLIAC Second Team selection and was named to the All-Midwest Region squad. She finished the year as the eighth-best goal scorer, seventh-best point getter and ranked sixth in assists in the conference with Panther team highs of seven goals, 20 points and six assists while ranking in the top eight in the conference in all three categories.
Freshmen Nine newcomers join the Panther ranks for 2012. Meade has indicated that with the depth on hand, this year may be a learning process for some and maybe all. But he also stresses that big things are projected for the Black and Gold youngsters down the road.
Wharton started all 19 games for the Panthers during the 2011 season. She helped support an ODU defense that ranked second in the GLIAC in goals allowed (15), goals against average (0.75) and shutouts (10). Her efforts on the field were recognized as she was honored with an All-GLIAC Second Team selection and to the NCAA Division II All-Midwest Region Third Team.
“I am excited about our freshman class. They are all high quality people that have excelled in the classroom and on the field. I am looking forward to working with them over the next four years as I can see this group pushing our program to a new level.”
Perry guided the backfield for the Panthers that ranked 25th nationally in shutout percentage (0.526), 33rd in goals against average (0.753) and second in several GLIAC defensive categories.
Looking Ahead – Much will be known about the fortunes of the Panthers in September. Four of the first six matches will be on the road, and include a visit to reigning GLIAC North Division Champion Grand Valley State and always competitive Tiffin University. Grand Valley is once again the pre-season favorite. However, one need only look back to last year, and with similar rankings in pace, the scrappy and determined Panthers took the Lakers to the wire, before eventually falling 1-0 but was brimming with confidence, as the Black and Gold went on to amass a nine game win streak.
Off the field, Perry was awarded with the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America distinction. She achieved a 4.0 cumulative GPA while studying biology/exercise science, making her the first ODU student-athlete to earn the honor at the Division II level. She was also honored on the All-Midwest Region team.
Now, as the new season begins to unfold, the hard work in the off-season combined with the steady improvement of the program makes for optimism and expectation. While Meade is cautious about the early challenges, he also realizes there is a real chance for his Panthers to make their mark for what could be a great 2012 season.
Juniors Five juniors rejoin the Panther roster and the squad will look to lean on their experience and depth. Forward Megan Augusta (Lyndhurst, Ohio), forward Danielle Scheetz (Coshocton, Ohio), midfielder Christen Adams (Sylvania, Ohio), defender Megan Hein (Cincinnati, Ohio),) and defender Natasha Hoffmannbeck (Hilliard, Ohio) will all be expected to assist the team to once again battle for league supremacy and a bid for the postseason.
“I believe this season will present itself as our greatest challenge to date in Division II,” Meade said. “We open up the first weekend of play with the University of Southern Indiana and Bellarmine, and then open up GLIAC play with four games on the road one of which is against Grand Valley. This is a tough way to begin September, but I believe we have a team that is looking forward to the challenge.”

The eight shutouts were also second-most in the GLIAC, while her goals against average of .85 ranked third in and her save percentage of .816 was fifth. ATHLETIC FACILITIES
Panther Field
Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the finest college baseball facilities in the country.
Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artificial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The field has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the field with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket office, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the finer facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.
Panther Softball Field
Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer
Alumni Hall
Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One fulllength basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleachers were added to the far side of the court. After the renovation all of the coaches now have an office on the second floor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.
Panther Courts
Men’s and Women’s Tennis Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.
Panther Valley/Frank Damian Field Baseball
First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Valley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The field is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left field line and a visitor bullpen along the right field line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther
Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facilities in the state of Ohio. The brick dust field is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a field should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left field line, and an underground irrigation system.
Hitting Facility Located next to the softball field is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refine their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.
Panther Training Facility Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offices for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.
Cumberland Trail Golf Club The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent conditioning and difficult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the finest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters. The ODU golf team has unlimited access to the facility which includes a driving range and large practice green.
Golf Practice Facilities ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facilities. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefits available to our teams. When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment for the golfers to improve during the cold winter months.

THE GLIAC
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 40 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University (then Institute), and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to that time, all GLIAC member institutions were located in the state of Michigan. On Dec. 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 1996-97 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. The GLIAC membership changed again when Tiffin University of Ohio joined the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007. The addition of Tiffin left the GLIAC with 12 full-time members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after the 2007-08 season.
The GLIAC entered a new era during the 2009-10 academic year. Commissioner Tom Brown, who had presided over the league for 17 years, retried on June 30, 2009. The longest serving commissioner in the history of the GLIAC, Brown expanded the conference from 10 full members to 14 full members and two associate members. Also under his leadership, the conference has grown to offering championships in 21 sports while rising to prominence on the national level as GLIAC teams and student-athletes have achieved success both in the classroom and on the fields of play. The Conference expanded on July 1, 2010 when Lake Erie College of Painesville, Ohio, and Ohio Dominican University, located in Columbus, joined the GLIAC. The League will further expand on July, 2012 when Malone University and Walsh University, both located in the Canton, Ohio area, become the 15th and 16th GLIAC members. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Management Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution – its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC Management Council is rotated alphabetically by school, with Suzanne Sanregret, Director of Athletics at Michigan Technological University, serving as GLIAC President in 2012-13. Dr. Glenn Mroz, President of Michigan Technological University, will serve as the chairperson of the GLIAC Presidents Council this year. The GLIAC made history in 2009 when it hired Dell Robinson as Commissioner. Robinson became the first ethnic minority to serve as D-II commissioner of a non-historically black college or university conference when he began his duties on July 1, 2009. Assisting Robinson are: Penny Cook, Asst. Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Asst. Commissioner for Media Relations; Mike McCann, Supervisor of Football Officials; Kim Vieira, Supervisor of Soccer Officials; Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials; Rob Doss, Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials; Bill Ek, Supervisor of Men’s Basketball Officials; and Rich Fetchiet, Assignor of Baseball Umpires.
