IF TRAVELING FOR THE HOLIDAYS:

Recommend planning their journey well in advance

Check the weather and road conditions together if driving and remind them to ensure their vehicle is in good working order.

Public transportation or carpooling can reduce the stress of driving long distances.

The holiday season can be stressful for many, so being in touch with friends, family, or Counseling Services can be an extra emotional support.

Inform roommates or suitemates about plans and expected return date This can be helpful to make necessary arrangements and ensure the living space remains secure.

Review academic commitments to ensure they’ve completed any assignments, papers, or projects due over the break or immediately upon their return.

Remind them to handle their room or apartment responsibilities, such as locking doors, turning off appliances, taking out trash, removing all perishable items from the fridge, and securing valuables.

When discussing grades with students, create a supportive atmosphere.

Encouraging open dialogue helps students feel more comfortable sharing their academic experiences and challenges Remember that every student is unique, and their response to these conversation starters may vary, so be prepared to listen, and adapt the conversation to their needs and preferences.

Express Interest: "I'm interested in how your classes are going this semester. Would you mind sharing your thoughts on your grades with me?"

Show Support and Openness: "I want you to know I'm here to support you in your academic journey How are you feeling about your grades?"

Ask About Their Goals: "Can you tell me about your academic goals and how your grades align? I'm curious to know your perspective."

Emphasize Communication: "I think it's essential for us to communicate openly about your college experience How can we discuss your grades in a way that feels comfortable for you?"

Offer Help and Resources: "If you ever need help or additional resources to succeed in your courses, please don't hesitate to let me know Is there anything specific you'd like assistance with?"

Inquire About Challenges: "College can be challenging. Are there any particular subjects or aspects of your coursework that you find difficult?"

Highlight Positive Aspects: "I'd love to hear about your accomplishments and what you're proud of academically. Let's celebrate your successes, too."
