I want to keep you informed about the exciting events that your student may be experiencing while living on campus at Old Dominion University I understand that it can be difficult to stay up-to-date with all that is going on, which is why we are here to help
As we head into the fall semester, I want to share resources available to your student on campus From safety and academic tips to mental health resources, the Housing & Residence Life is committed to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students I encourage you to have open and honest conversations with your student about their experiences, and to reach out to me if you have any concerns

CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR STUDENT
In today's fast-paced world, it can be easy to lose touch with our loved ones. Conversation starters are a helpful way for parents to stay connected with their students and ensure that they are providing the support and guidance that they need. Remember, active listening is the key to successful communication, and parents should always strive to be present and engaged in their children's lives
How are your classes going? Are you enjoying your courses?
Have you met your academic advisor?
Have you joined any clubs or organizations on campus? Which ones?
Have you made any new friends? Tell me about them
What do you like most about your campus? Is there anything you don't like?
Have you explored the area around your campus?
What are some cool places you've discovered?
How are you adjusting to residence halls life? Is it what you expected?
Have you had any interesting experiences with your professors? Good or bad?
Have you started thinking about your future career plans? What are you considering?
Have you found any good study spots on campus? Are you using the library?
Is there anything I can do to support you while you're in college?

Please keep your doors locked at all times.
2. OUTSIDE DOORS
Do not prop outside doors open.

3. CELLULAR USE
Limit use of cell phone when traveling on campus.

4. STAY ALERT
Be aware of surroundings when walking on campus.
5. REMOTE AREAS
Have a cell phone on hand when walking in remote areas.


6. NIGHTTIME
At night, walk in well-lit corridors.
7. ALERTING POLICE
Report suspicious activity to the police.
