A round-up of who’s been talking about Odylique in the past couple of months. Thank you to everyone who has written such lovely reviews. I have spent hundreds of pounds on beauty products, but I think I have finally found the perfect combo: The lemon and tea tree facial wash and the spot on serum. Together, they have improved my skin no end. It is very gentle, leaves the skin feeling soft and a little goes a long way.
This soap [Lavender Cleansing Bar] smells gorgeous. It lathers well and is kind to the skin. It’s so gentle I can use it to wash my face.

We’re all too aware that the summer sun can wreak havoc with sensitive Margaret & Abi skin, so Margaret shares some tips for coping with summer’s challenges on pages 4-7, based on some questions from a great Q&A session held recently on our Facebook page (facebook.com/odylique) Finally a bit about our name ‘Odylique’ and where it comes from as many of you have asked. Odyl is an old norse word meaning ‘natural power’ – hence Odylique ‘like a power of nature’, which we hope you’ll agree is very relevant to what we make!

My all-time favourite - I have been a fan of your old toner [Rose Tonic] but since the introduction of this new formula, it become my all-time favourite toner. If it runs out and I stop using it for a few days, my skin misses it so much. Nothing more refreshing and soothing than spraying this toner over my face after running/walking. It also works to calm hustled mind too. Just love it! Minnie, Apr 2015
Amazing Odylique Repair Lotion. I was amazed and thrilled to find that the lotion has actually repaired a lot of the capillaries. Certainly my face is much better for having used it. Thank you.” Marilyn, Mar 2015
A palmful of Repair Lotion with a drop of Ravensara or Lavender oil mixed into it was the only thing that helped me deal with the continuing pain of shingles a few years ago. Now I keep it in the house for any dry skin problem, a wonderful product! C.P, May 2015
Repair Lotion is Essential for my eczema-prone skin. Wouldn’t be without it and I take it everywhere with me. Suzanne, Mar 2015
For quite some time I have had itching, red and swollen leg. Doctors have given me steroid cream, all to no avail, but the Repair Lotion is doing all that prescription creams didn’t. It has eased the redness and the itching has gone all in 1 week. I am so happy with this product.

It has been a wonderful few months of exposure for us, with coverage in the Huffington Post, Psychologies magazine and many online blogs.
After searching for the perfect cleanser for over a year, I’ve finally found it! This [Lemon and Tea Tree Purifying Wash] is seriously the best cleanser I’ve ever used! My skin is very sensitive and dry, but this cleans it smoothly and does not cause any dryness! Fantastic, new favourite!!

Our beloved Rose Moisturiser had an exciting outing on the Eurostar in early May when it made its way into goody bags on the Eurostar’s maiden voyage to Marseille! If you’re travelling anywhere this summer, don’t forget that many of our products come in travel-friendly sizes of 15-30ml, including our Mosimix spray to help you keep any bugs at bay.

Summer is upon us and we hope you have plans to relax and enjoy it whether at home or abroad. This is a great time of year for us as we see the first of the year’s plant harvests come into our production facility. A favourite - because of its lovely scent - is the rose – more about this on page 12.
Green Parent magazine’s editor enthusiastically endorsed our Silk-Touch Cleanser – Margaret’s wonderful gel-to-milk rinse-off cleanser that smoothes and hydrates very dry, sun-parched or highly sensitive skin. The only shampoo [Baby Gentle Wash & Shampoo] that works for me - I have a very irritable scalp and I cannot use any, and I mean ANY shampoo (including baby shampoos) without getting dandruff and itchy scalp. I spent tons of money on a variety of all sorts of shampoos only to have to give them all away after just a few washes and this is the only shampoo I have been able to find so far that actually works for me and doesn’t ruin my scalp and hair. measures like staying in the shade, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and avoiding sun exposure from 12-3pm, this may be all you need during limited or low level sun exposure.
Sensitive Skin in the Sun Summer is a time most of us look forward to and whilst safety in the sun is important to us all, it can be especially challenging to those who need to limit exposure due to health or have dry, sensitive, fair or eczema-prone skin. Odylique’s founder and sensitive skin expert, Margaret Weeds, answers a few ‘burning’ questions to simplify skin care in the sun.
Q. With summer on the way, what do I need to care for my dry (and ageing) skin?
A. All our creams and lotions are extremely rich in natural
antioxidants that offer valuable every-day protection against the damaging and ageing effects of the sun, like inflammation, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Although our Odylique skin care doesn’t include any products with a measured SPF (yet!), research increasingly shows that this antioxidant protection is as important as an SPF in daily skin care. For your dry skin, our

Superfruit Concentrate, applied alone or over your regular Timeless Rose moisturiser, will provide the perfect antioxidant boost. It is a powerpack of antioxidant superfruits including avocado, rosehip, pomegranate and sea buckthorn. Sea buckthorn has unique qualities to soothe and protect skin both during and after sun exposure, whilst its rare omega 7 helps to counteract the breakdown of collagen and elastin that sunlight causes. So you could be a little generous and treat the backs of your hands to a couple of drops too! Our organic mineral concealers provide a little natural sun protection and will cover and protect pigmentation
marks or can be generously blended with a little moisturiser to give a lighter foundation-like coverage (see page 15). Exposed areas on your body will appreciate an antioxidant body lotion like our new Tropical Bliss Body Silk, whilst even light clothing like a T-shirt can provide protection equal to SPF 30! Along with common-sense
For strong and more prolonged sun exposure, look for a natural sunscreen (min. SPF 15) which relies only on the non-nano minerals titanium dioxide and/ or zinc oxide as sunscreen agents. These minerals sit on the skin like a physical reflective shield and are safe, effective and non-irritant to dry or sensitive skin, though I favour zinc oxide for its skin benefits and broad UVA as well as UVB protection. Chemical sunscreens, like oxybenzonone, avobenzone, PABA and methoxycinnamate, work by penetrating the skin and absorbing the sun’s rays, but studies show some of these are known to generate the ageing and damaging free radicals we’re trying to avoid. Have a look below for further information on SPFs. Sunscreen is best applied over your antioxidant moisturiser, body or hand lotion.
Q. Due to health issues I’ve been strongly recommended to
use high sun protection. I also have eczema and want to avoid chemical sunscreens but all the high SPF 40-50 products seem to have them in. Any suggestions?
A. You’re quite right. Regardless of whether it contains minerals, any
product claiming an SPF 40-50 is pretty sure to have added chemical absorbers to boost the SPF value. You should be able to find a non-nano mineral only sunscreen with an SPF of 25-30 - but is this too low? SPF values can be misleading. It may
About Margaret “I was first introduced to pharmacognosy (plant medicine) in my late teens, and became a lifelong devotee of natural medicine and organic gardening. After training as a massage therapist in the 1970s I began studying herbs and essential oils in earnest in the early 1980s with the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and became one of the first members of the International Federation of Aromatherapists in 1985. The basic formulation for Odylique & Essential Care’s Repair Lotion has its origin in those early days for the relief of our family’s eczema and allergy-prone skin. I still create these unique formulations exclusively for Odylique today and remain passionate about the ‘genius of nature’ for effective skin care.” seem logical to assume that an SPF 50 is twice as effective as SPF 25, but this isn’t so. SPF25 blocks around 96% of the burning UVB rays whilst SPF 50 blocks around 98%, in effect that’s just 2% more protection. An SPF30 blocks around 97% narrowing the difference to 1%. So whilst they all block most of the UVB rays, what the SPF importantly tells us is how long after application we need to reapply to avoid burning. If you normally start to burn after 10 minutes sun exposure, then reapply an SPF25 after 250 minutes (10 x 25) or just over 4 hours and SPF 30 after 300 minutes or 5 hours – and always after swimming.
A good sunscreen should offer ‘broad spectrum’ protection across the more deeper penetrating UVA rays too. So you shouldn’t need to resort to chemical sunscreens in order to get good sun protection, so long as you remember to reapply – and not too sparingly as that can reduce the protection time. Whether it’s scorching or not, it makes sun-sense to stay out of the sun between 12-3pm, wear a wide-brimmed hat and remember that a t-shirt equals SPF 30!
I’m working hard on a longawaited ‘super-natural’ SPF sunscreen – so watch this space!

Q. What would you recommend I use after having exposed my skin to the sun (and failed to protect or prepare beforehand) to calm, repair and cool it? My skin gets inflamed and irritated, red and itchy, the more so if I have been outside. I cannot use any sunscreens (I have tried many...) as they provoke an allergic reaction even worse than if I’d been unprotected in the sun for hours on end!
A. This is a tricky but not uncommon problem. And our glorious British weather is famous for its U-turns that make us unexpectedly catch too much sun all of a sudden. Sore, sun-reddened skin is a sign the skin has been damaged, so it is important to replenish lost moisture and nutrients as soon as possible. I am a great believer in the soothing, healing properties of aloe vera for immediate relief of sun burn. If your skin is nor particularly dry, you can try Spot on Serum for an instant cooling effect or Repair Lotion, our flagship product for inflamed, dry and itchy conditions like eczema. Both have high therapeutic concentrations of organic aloe juice or for a general after sun lotion, our new Tropical Bliss Body Silk contains soothing calendula, sea buckthorn fruit and aloe juice. Drink lots of water, take a cool shower and apply the soothing lotion of your choice.

Bites and Allergies:
It isn’t only humans that love the summer - this is the season for mosquitoes and other biting insects, as well as plants that can irritate the skin. Cover up when gardening or out in the countryside, especially near water or apply natural protection like Mosimix to exposed limbs. If you do get bitten, try antimicrobial Spot-on Serum to take the sting and itch out of bites and promote rapid healing.
A soothing body lotion, free from artificial fragrance and high in antioxidants is always good before short-term sun exposure but particularly so afterwards if it offers additional calming and rehydrating qualities. Our new Tropical Bliss Body Silk is packed with naturally protective oils and butters of avocado, cocoa and coconut plus calming calendula, lavender, sea buckthorn and of course our exceptional concentrated aloe vera juice. Tropical Bliss replaces Essential Care Organic Hand & Body Lotion and has a similar natural fragrance enhanced by a subtle whisper of delicious organic vanilla.
You asked, we listened: In our 2012 customer survey many of you asked us to offer a separate Hand Cream and Body Lotion. So as part of the evolution to Odylique, you can now choose between Tropical Bliss Body Silk and the already much coveted hand-bag sized Lemon Butter Hand Smoothie!

Polymorphous Light Eruption (PMLE):
PMLE is a severe sensitivity to UV light, meaning most sufferers tend to get one or two attacks early in the spring/summer when winter skin is exposed to light. It results in itchy red patches on the arms, face, chest, neck and thighs. Cover up where possible and in the event of a flare up, Repair Lotion with its powerful extracts of chamomile and stellaria may help settle the skin down.
Repair Lotion £12 60ml / £20 200ml
Eczema: Heat Rash and Prickly Heat:
A common summer ailment with small, itchy red bumps which typically develop in the folds of the skin and anywhere sweating occurs. Babies, small children and pregnant women are particularly prone to prickly heat rash, but in really hot conditions even those with ‘normal’ skin can suffer. Try and keep cool and opt for light, loose natural fibre clothing and lightweight bed linen. A common cause of prickly heat is sun creams that block the pores, particularly those containing mineral oils (petrolatum and paraffinum liquidum) and silicone. Being non-absorbed they can create a cling-film like layer on the skin’s surface that holds in heat, stops sweat escaping and the skin from cooling down.

The itchiness and redness of eczema can also be exacerbated by sun, sweat - and more frequent chlorine exposure. Again, cover up and also stay away from harsh detergents and soaps. Repair Lotion help soothe flare-ups and Ultra Rich Balm is a multi-purpose rich emollient for soothing dryness and irritation which can also be applied to the skin before swimming as a buffer against chlorine and salt water.

T
wo recent studies* have found that on average 40% of adults suffer from a sensitive scalp. Interestingly, it isn’t only those with sensitive skin, dermatitis, psoriasis or eczema who experience scalp sensitivity. The itchiness, tingling or pain associated with a sensitive scalp can be a direct result of pollution, heat, stress, chemical treatments and shampoos. Our skin’s main defence against external injury is a healthy and intact oil and moisture barrier, but this can be undermined and damaged. Exposure to the elements and a potentially wide array of irritating chemicals make the scalp - and hair - particularly vulnerable to damage. With this in mind, here is our 5-point guide to a healthy scalp and beautiful hair!
i) Use a gentle, pH-balanced shampoo** Repeated washing with harsh shampoo strips the oils from our scalp and damages the hair cuticle in the same way that strong cleansers can leave our face and hands dry and sore. Once the moisture and oil barrier is damaged, chemicals and other irritants can penetrate more easily, sensitising the scalp and extending the cycle of irritation. So it makes sense to avoid shampoos based on known irritants like sulphates, synthetic fragrances and antidandruff agents as these may actually increase the flaking and itching of a sensitive scalp. Opt for a shampoo based on gentle plant origin cleansers, natural herbs and conditioning agents that is also acid-balanced to the scalp and hair (around pH 5.5). If your scalp is irritated, try to shampoo hair no
more than twice weekly, rinse well and possibly finish with an acid rinse (see point ii). ii) Neutralise hard water Lime-scale makes water ‘hard’ and alkaline which is not the scalp’s best friend as it dulls the hair and disturbs the scalp’s natural acid mantle allowing chemicals and bacteria easier access. If you live in a hard water area, applying either a proprietary acid rinse or adding a few drops of cider vinegar or lemon juice to half a litre of water as a final rinse will promote an itch-free scalp and shiny hair. iii) Rinse on a non-wash day As well as using a gentler shampoo, try washing a bit less often. A thorough rinse with clear water in the shower followed by an acid rinse (see above) if necessary can gently cleanse, remove sweat

and refresh scalp and hair between shampoos. (Oily hair and a dry scalp is a common consequence of ‘too-much too-often’ strong shampoo.) iv) Go easy on styling products and hair colourants It’s not the sexiest solution, but using fewer styling products helps for two reasons. They generally don’t benefit hair or scalp health as such and being high in drying solvents and plasticisers, require a strong ‘clarifying’ shampoo to remove their build-up. Choose the kindest colourant you can, possibly one based on plants like henna and walnut and treat your hair and scalp to a weekly overnight nourishing mask.
v) Protect hair and scalp from heat and sun Rather obvious, but wearing a hat gives good protection from strong sunlight, wind and pollution. Hair care products containing natural anti-oxidant herbs like horsetail, nettle, chamomile and aloe give protection from UV damage and hair colour fading. Turn down the heat setting on your hairdryer or allow your hair to dry naturally if practical. *44% and 36% of the respective test populations. **Odylique Gentle Herb Shampoo received the award for Best Shampoo for Sensitive Scalps in the 2015-2016 Observatoire des Cosmetiques awards.

It takes 1 kilo of rose flowers to produce 1 kilo of rose hydrolat and whilst far less concentrated than pure essential oil, it contains all the water soluble constituents of the petals including antioxidant polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamin C and other valuable components which help reduce inflammation and UV damage, promote hydration and collagen synthesis and encourage a healthy, more youthful skin. A labour of love, the blooms are carefully handharvested early in the morning before the sun has chance to evaporate any of the precious essential oil from the petals. to lift the spirits and not just by virtue of their visual impact or traditional association with love, beauty and femininity. Through Aromatherapy, we know that their glorious fragrance exhibits a positive influence on our mood and emotion via a direct connection between nasal sensors and the brain. Dubbed the ‘queen of oils’, the exquisite essence of rose petals has long been acclaimed for its ability to lift the spirits and induce a positive frame of mind. Rose benefits all skin types as it tones, hydrates and promotes elasticity and cell regeneration and is particularly indicated for sensitive, inflamed, dry, aging or allergy-prone skin.
It takes the petals from around 60 - 100 entire rose heads (up to 1000 petals) to yield just 1 drop of precious rose otto essential oil, so unsurprisingly it is the most precious and costly essential oil of all – substantially more so in organic quality. Its composition is very complex and so far has defied all attempts by cosmetic chemists to replicate its true fragrance synthetically, so much of the non-organic rose essential produced finds its way into high end perfumes. Rosewater (or hydrolat) is generally a by-product of rose essential oil distillation – a classic ingredient in skin care as well as genuine Turkish delight! Ours is a specific distillation of an exquisitely fragrant rose variety
We source all our fragrant extracts of organic rose directly from family-owned farms with a long history of expertise in growing and distilling the highest quality blooms according to organic standards. Given the high cost of organic extracts in general, trusting their quality and purity is crucial and we love that they’re all completely traceable from field to bottle and feel confident this contributes significantly to the safe, effectiveness of our products.
