WINTER TRENDS By Kate Hunter

it’s a great idea to invest in one. Several of the trends from fall can easily be transformed for the Winter. The dark and edgy colors especially work well with both seasons. All you have to do to make this transformation is add a few layers for warmth and you’re good to go. One of the best ways to do this is by adding a scarf. One of the bigger trends this year is blanket scarves. The huge size of this accessory allows for comfort and warmth, and is the perfect addition to a plain and simple outfit (and they’re super cute). Some of the more obvious trends for Winter have been around for a few years and aren’t a huge surprise. Plaid, for example, has been in style for years but nobody seems to be tired of it yet. Like other trends, it also is easy to dress up or down. Fringe has also been a trend this season, as it was during the Fall. Fringe is everywhere and on everything. It’s a cute yet simple way to add some flare to an otherwise simple accessory. Whether you’re into a more edgy look, or you prefer a simple wardrobe, there’s so many options for you this Winter. You’re sure to be the most fashionable one on the streets this season.

Winter is one of the most prominent times for fashion, as some of the most unique styles come out. The entire fashion world goes crazy around this time of year trying to get the latest trendy items. You’re in luck because today you’re going to get an inside peek at the latest trends for this winter. Starting off with the returning trends, big, comfy sweaters are a must for this time of year. Sweaters are a perfect item to pair with some simple dark skinny jeans and some booties.Winter is the season of dark colors and edgy fabrics and patterns, so you have tons of choices depending on your style. There are hundreds of fabrics and patterns out there. Some of the most popular fabrics being suede, velvet and leather. These fabrics have been so much easier to incorporate into your outfits recently, since they have gained popularity and are in more stores than ever. These fabrics can be found in several different forms, from leggings, to bags, to shoes, there’s sure to be one that you’ll love. Another benefit to these styles is that they can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the day or event. One of the most popular trends of the season has been all types of vests. Fur vests, puffy vests, suede vests, the options are limitless. These can range in price and can be quite expensive, but will be an essential in your closet in days to come. Especially when winter really starts to kick in, these will keep you pretty warm. Depending on where you shop, a quality vest can last you for several months and seasons, so

How did you get started in the modeling industry? I was 6 feet tall and not athletic and my body refused to weigh over 120 pounds, and all these people kept approaching me and they were like, ‘Hey! You should come join my agency!’ I don’t remember what their agencies were but I was like, ‘Hey, I should get into this!’ And I’m a performer so I like to be in the spotlight, and fashion is so glamorous. Are you signed to a modeling agency? Would you recommend doing so? I am signed currently with The Agency in Kansas City. I would definitely recommend it because through an agency you get all these jobs that you wouldn’t hear about without an agency. And its super easy to get jobs because they just like email you!

taken from pictures she took all over Kansas City and she printed them on dresses. That was my favorite because I got in KC Magazine from that and it was my first magazine. The other one was for the KC Fashion Week show for Buff Reynolds. I was the finale dress and on the dress it had a bunch of galaxies all over it and it reminded me of an octopus. So the entire show everyone called me the octopus. It had a super deep V neck and my hair was crimped out the wazoo! What’s the weirdest thing you have had to wear for a modeling gig? I had to wear a feather wig for a shoot with Tom Foley. It was really fun to play with!

Is there a big difference between runway modeling and photoshoots? Do you prefer one over the other? YES! There is a giant difference. There are different poses that you can do in photoshoots that you can’t do on the runway. With the runway its all about the outfit and with photoshoots its all about the art of the entire picture. I prefer runway. I like it because I just like the atmosphere and the environment and all the people there. With a photoshoot it’s just you and the photographer. With the runway there are so many people there, like the designer and makeup artist and the hair person, and you get to meet a bunch of people who are in the same line as you. Also the rush is just awesome! It’s so cool! What has been your favorite outfit you’ve worn for a modeling gig? Buff Reynolds and Heidi Herrman. I can’t decide! Heidi’s designs were

just kind of like this! I’m often asked if I’m anorexic or bulimic but no! My body is just like this! Actually right now I’m trying to gain 10 pounds! Most girls try to loose weight! What is something about the modeling industry that you think should change? I think the stereotypes. Often people think that the industry is very pretentious and you have to be skinny and tall but one of my favorite models is 5’2”. Her name is Joanna Kuchta and she is my inspiration. She just does her own thing! Beauty comes in so many different forms and there’s so many different parts of the fashion industry. Really its just art! Its not about who is skinny and tall! Also, models aren’t stupid! I worked with this one girl who flew in for the fall season of fashion week and she went to Harvard and there was another girl who went to Stanford. There’s at least one nurse in every line I’ve been in! Do you see yourself pursuing modeling as a professional career in the future? I mean its definitely something that I will do on the side but its not something I’m gonna base my whole entire life on. I am planning on being a neurologist. But I can’t base my entire life on it.

Has a photographer or director ever asked you to do anything that you’ve said no to? No. I’m very open to things but the photographers I work with aren’t raunchy who are gonna be like “Hey! Take your shirt off!’ And I just turned 18. Do you follow a strict diet or exercise routine to keep in shape? No. The most activity I do is musical theatre. I’m very out of shape! Walking up the stairs is hard. My body is

What is some advice you would give to someone who wishes to get started in the modeling industry? Do it! It’s so fun and it’s such a wonderful experience! Even if you aren’t planning to do it as a career, it’s a wonderful way to meet people and you learn a lot about fashion. I learned how to do my makeup right and how to match my clothes. The basics of life! And if that’s your passion then go for it!

How do I make it into the fashion industry?

Who’s your favorite fashion icon?

Get involved first, get an internship or shadow someone who already works in the industry. People have this idea that the fashion world is the perfect job and it is for some people but it’s not for everyone. It’s very hard to make it in this industry. You have to be determined and willing to put in long hours and give it your all. This also doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes a long time to make a name for yourself.

I don’t think I could possibly choose one, there are so many. Some of my favorites are Blake Lively, Zendaya, and Cara Delevingne. These women always look fashion forward and own the red carpet. They are not afraid to wear anything and I think that’s what sets them apart from other people.

What’s a cute lazy day outfit? You can never go wrong with an oversized t-shirt, leggings, warm scarf, and ankle booties. I always like to put my hair in a messy but on lazy days. This is the perfect outfit for lazy days, people think you actually tried when it took you maybe 5 minutes to get ready!

What are some Fall beauty essentials? The naked pallet is a must have for the cooler months, the colors just scream fall! A warm toned blush that has a slight bronze is great to warm up your face. Can’t forget the baby lips with a red lip stick on top!

What clothing pieces should I invest in? Staple items for sure. No need to splurge on trendy clothes that will be out of style in a month. Things like jeans, blazers, a little black dress and neutral heels are things that will never go out of style and are worth spending the extra money on.

Quality or Quantity?

Quality, no doubt! You don’t want to waste your money on clothes that will only last for a short period of time. The more you shop and the older you get you will develop an eye for high quality pieces that will last a lifetime rather than a few months!

PREPPING FOR THE SPOTLIGHT By ALLISON VERMILLION

Lights, Camera, Fashion. Victoria Secret, NYFW, and Paris Fashion Week are just a few prominent shows encapsulating the designer’s vivid clothing, eccentric make up, and daring hairstyles. Fashion shows that are that gigantic don’t happen overnight; preparation and dedication are required in order to have a successful show. Depending on how big the fashion show is, most designers have employees or a team that organize the tasks required in order to develop the base of the show. If you’re on a budget, the best thing to do is find close friends or family that are willing to dedicate their time and resources to help you. The next two most important elements are to find a venue and to book it fast, as well as find models. Most venues are not only elegant and superior, but spacious. The best way to choose your venue is first by determining how big your crowd will be and second by corresponding the interior of the building to the style of your line. After the major details fall into place, start advertising. One of the biggest mistakes in the fashion marketing world is not advertising abundantly enough and soon enough. Your goal should be to reach as many people you know, so both you and your line can be recognized. If you feel

that your company has potential in being scouted by other designers or buyers, make sure to send them a special invite. After you’ve reached your target audience, sell tickets to those who are interested. Pricing tickets will depend on how elevated you make your show. As soon as you’re confident that you advertised well enough for you and your company, practice! When some people think of a fashion show, they consider walking the runway to be the most important part of the practice. While this is true, there are many overlooked tasks that need to be rehearsed. Two important tasks are lighting and sound. There are many variations of how light can be displayed upon a stage. Figure out lighting cues and coincide them with models as they practice on the walkway. Music or sound is also a very important task that can often be overlooked. The best way to pick the music is to match the genre with the composition of the line. It’s also a good idea to pick music based on the theme you are going for. For example, I would not suggest classic rock music if your stage is elegant and your clothes are pastel. As you practice light, sound, and runway cues, it is important you set the stage or space you’re using to fit the theme of the show. Décor or props may be relevant so the audience can perceive the works of the whole. At this time it may also be appropriate to practice curtain cues, depending on whether or not your show involves a curtain. Another preparation to make your show more successful would be tidying up the venue space. In the process of creating the props, the stage or area around the

stage may be messy. It would be smart to vacuum or dust as necessary to give the audience the most approachable and professional fashion show. After décor and last minute prepping have been assured, meet with models and the team several hours early to give orders and start hair and makeup. Being the designer, as you can already see, requires detailed planning ahead of time. Now it’s your job to make sure all the tasks for the night of the show are getting done. As your models slip into their divine couture, it’s your job as the designer to fix any snags or ripping of the outfit before the show. Always have your sewing tools on you, as well as backup outfits, in case a real disaster strikes. As soon as the models are in their outfits, allow your hired hair and makeup crew get to work. As well as clothing should match the stage and the music, it should also compliment the hair and makeup. After dress, hair, and makeup are secure, and you’re sure that everyone is doing their jobs adequately, sit back, try to relax, and enjoy the show.

FASHION BLAST FROM THE PAST BY ALLISON VERMILLION

RENAISSANCE AGE The time period of the Renaissance age occurred between the 14th-17th centuries. The women’s dress was often described as flowy in the sleeves and drawn in at the waist. Elegance of dress depended on class rank. For instance, a royal lady may wear a flowy gown made of the finest threads, while a peasant would most likely wear a gown with a less defined shape, and drab color.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK This is outfit is perfect for a Renaissance Festival. Find a synched in dress with flowy like sleeves, pair it with a timeless necklace and you’ve conquered the Renaissance look.

FLAPPER AGE The flapper age occurred between the 1920’s and 1930’s. At the time women had just received the right to vote and with freedom to vote, women choose to celebrate by developing a less conservative style. Cutting their hair, wearing short fringe or embellished dresses, and adding a shimmery pearls, was just the start of women’s freedom.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK This look is very popular right now and is great for costume parties or Halloween. Almost any store is guaranteed to have a gem embellished dress or a fringy sparkly one and if you go to the right place, you can spend almost less than $20.

PRAIRIE AGE In the late 1800’s the Prairie dresses, bonnets, and long stockings were the trend. At the time women were required to dress conservative and “lady like”. The long dresses and bonnets, often containing small prints of flowers, were used to protect the women from the sun as they walked alongside their wagons daily.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK Prairie dresses are great for history presentations or a costume party. The best way to find a Prairie dress is to find a store online that sells them or make your own. Making your own dress could be a bit of project, but the freedom to your own print and style should make up for it.
