Cam switch helps keep the power flowing OEM recently solved an interesting cam switch application for a customer who manufactures power distribution units

The unit takes its supply from an AC network as well as a UPS backup. A changeover switch was needed but with make before break contacts to allow switching between AC & UPS without any interruption. This scheme can easily be realised by Baco and we chose a PR26 series switch to satisfy the thermal current requirement of 40A. The customer chose a standard grey, padlockable handle but we added a customised legend plate insert marked U & B to give clear visual indication of the status of each position. Baco can offer a complete range of cam switches rated from 10A to 250A in many standard configurations or completely customised to your needs.

Looking for continuous and multipoint level but not finding anything in the standard range? Val.Co can offer you a solution with custom built products to suit your application The company’s mission is to design process instrumentation and to satisfy customer requirements. Their Philosophy is for the engineering team to continuously engage in improving the quality of products and technology. DC motors with Hall sensors The Hall sensor is a simple and economical solution to assist in the control of a motor. DOGA has designed a motor that includes two Hall sensors allowing the user to have precise feedback on speed, position and direction of rotation of the motor The 316, 317 and 319 series are all available with Hall sensors and are suitable

Features: • Up to 972ppr feedback • Low voltage 12-24 V dc motor supply • High starting torque - up to 60Nm

for applications that require precise feedback e.g. agriculture, building access,

• DC motor with worm gearbox compact, low noise & cost effective

care aid, medical, office equipment, marine and general industrial automation.

• Bespoke customisation available

Each Hall sensor gives high and low pulses (see channel A and B in fig.1.) Channel A allows the user to count the pulses to determine the motor speed and position; channel B allows the user to determine the direction of rotation of the

Figure 1

motor due to the 90° electrical offset between channels A and B. The sensors are integrated within the motor therefore the dimensions remain unchanged compared to the version without Hall sensors and are designed to work at multiple supply voltages specific to the user’s application. The resistances “R” will be implemented by the user within their controller with the values specified for their specific operating voltage 5, 12 or 24 V (see fig .2.)

EFFICIENT REDUNDANCY for power supplies With increasingly sensitive and complex systems, a power supply failure can result in data loss or system downtime, which can cause long restart times and high costs. Redundant power supply systems increase system availability and prevent financial losses In a redundant system, two or more power supplies are switched in parallel and decoupled by one or more redundancy modules. The module prevents short-circuiting of the bus voltage if short-circuit occurs in the output side of a power supply. Redundancy modules guarantee system availability, even if a power supply fails. However, the decoupling diodes in the module lead to high power losses in form of heat and a large voltage drop. A load of 40A creates approximately 20W of power losses in heat resulting in thermal stress on electronics and also has a voltage drop of around 500mV. PULS engineers carried out research to find out how this can be minimised. When analysing the results, it quickly became clear that standard diodes could not fulfil the need for minimal no-load losses. Therefore, a decoupling solution with MOSFETs was developed. This technology greatly reduces power losses and voltage drop. For instance, a load current of 40A will only produce power losses amounting up to 3W instead of 20W and voltage drop can be minimised to less than 50mV. DIN-rail power supplies with integrated decoupling function are also available. This means that users can build redundancy systems without additional modules - resulting in significant space and cost savings, and reduction in system complexity. An additional technical innovation was implemented — ”hot swapping”. Redundancy modules or redundant power supplies with “hot swapping” can be replaced while the system is still running. The connections have plug connectors with short-circuit protection. Replacing the defective device can be done without voltage interruptions and redundancy is restored immediately. This is indispensable for systems, where even a temporary failure could mean significant security risks or serious economic losses.

Fast and convenient installation The Progress® EMC easy CONNECT cable glands allow you to make a secure connection to the cable screen during installation. This compensates for tolerances in shielding thicknesses. The easy CONNECT is manufactured from nickel- plated brass with an integrated spring system. This allows access to partially stripped and exposed shielded cables which can be passed through the gland. Having a protective clamp guarantees a shield contact and delivers less transfer impedance. The clamp itself prevents cables in areas with explosive atmospheres from being torn out whilst also being resistant to temperatures between -60°C…100°C. Using a contact spring not only offers a large clamping range to the shield but also make it very simple to assemble and disassemble without damaging the EMC braid. The two-part sealing inserts can be modified to the existing cable diameter whilst guaranteeing a sealing which complies with IP68 and IP69K ratings.
