Heat radiation, or IR radiation, is electromagnetic radiation emitted from surfaces due to heat. All objects emit heat radiation, but color and intensity vary depending on its temperature. Just like when you dim your light bulb, the light goes from pale orange to bright white, it has to do with the filament getting warmer. These properties allow you to use a thermal camera to determine the temperature of an object without touching it.
With a thermal imaging camera, you can locate inflammations in animals that cannot tell where they are in pain, detect damaged fruit, do industry quality controls, and detect potential fires in an early stage. These are just a few examples of what a thermal camera can help with. Keep on reading for more information about IR technology and its uses.

THE HOWSEESIMAGINGTHERMALCAMERAEVERYTHINGHEATRADIATIONWORKS
Heat radiation is used in several different industries and contexts when you need to measure the temperature, of for example liquids or objects that pass, at a distance. A somewhat unexpected area where a thermal camera can be useful is to find a leak or monitor drying processes. Just as you get cold when you are damp, other objects will also cool down due to moisture. Objects do not have to differ in color to be detected, temperature or humidity are just as good.
HOW CAN YOU USE HEAT RADIATION?
The technology with thermal cameras is used as previously mentioned in a variety of industries, everything from animal farming to the manufacturing and food industry. Another concrete example is the problem of seeing if a glue string is in place. It is often difficult to see with traditional vision. But if it is possible to heat the glue a few degrees before application, it will glow in a thermal camera and be easy to detect. Below are more examples of activities where thermal imaging cameras are very useful.
5INSPO IMAGING & VISION 01/2022
For example, if you want to monitor a production line to see that no machines or processes overheat, a single camera can replace hundreds of temperature sensors. This by setting the camera to alarm as soon as a point goes outside a specific tol erance, or if a single area exceeds a maximum level. Thereby, dangerous or expensive accidents can be prevented before damage or fire occurs.
USEFUL TECHNOLOGY IN SEVERAL INDUSTRIES
A company that works with crushing stone contacted us at OEM Automatic and needed help. They needed to find a solution to see if there were any stones left in the crusher. This was a common problem and led to the crusher becoming too hot and breaking. Downtime and repairs of the machine were of course costs they wanted to get rid of. It was solved easily with a ther mal camera that was programmed to trigger the alarm if the temperature rose above normal. Then the machine could stop, be cleaned and then run again. The camera used for the stone crusher was an AX8, with built-in vision software. Therefore, no extra hardware is required for the camera to perform its task.
AVOID UNEXPECTED OUTAGES
Another challenge in a vision system is to accurately de scribe what you are looking for. You need to program exactly what is right or wrong for your computer to know, which can sometimes be difficult. Poor soldering or broken components can cause parts of a circuit board to heat up faster or slower than other parts. By programming which temperature range different parts should have during normal operation, deviations become easy to detect. It is just an example of how problems that can be very complex in traditional vision but become almost elementary with a thermal camera. As you can see, heat radiation can be a good complement to traditional vision. In all vision systems, you need clear contrasts to be able to distinguish what you are looking for. But with a ther mal camera, a whole new possibility opens. Objects do not have to differ in color to be detectable, instead temperature or humidity can be used for this purpose.
With the help of a thermal camera, a farmer can, for example, perform a health check on his livestock to detect any inflam mation or count the animals in the pasture. It can also be used for self-driving vehicles to detect animals and people on the road.
In the process industry, in addition to pure monitoring where you can detect fire or other deviations, you can also make level and humidity measurements. Even from the outside of a vessel, you can measure the level of it along with neighboring vessels at the same time.
Quality checks can be performed on circuit boards to ensure normal operation. But also in the food industry to detect bad fruit or bacterial growth. In public spaces, thermal cameras can assist with, among other things, traditional surveillance in the dark. One applica tion that has received a lot of attention in recent years is EST (Elevated Skin Temperature) where you can discover if people have an elevated body temperature.
FLIR Systems was founded in 1978 to develop affordable IR sensors with high quality. They have really succeeded in this and are today the market leader and almost synonymous with a thermal imaging camera. In 2021, the company was acquired by Teledyne to form Teledyne FLIR. Due to their long experience and high quality, they can offer a wide range of their sensors with the best warranties on the market.

OUR HEAT RADIATION
FLIR A400/A500/A700 This is a more flexible variant. It is designed based on the same design philosophy as an A50/ A70 and has the same options and functions. Meanwhile, it is more flexible in its design through replaceable lenses that can also have motorized focus – but with the downside of having a slightly lower IP rating. Finally, they have a larger temperature range as they can go up to 1500 °C com pared to 1000 °C for A50/A70.

WE TRAIN YOU - FREE OF CHARGE!
Not everything is visible to the human eye or to a standard camera. Do you need to see something in a new way? Then a thermal imaging camera can be the solution. Are you curious of what a thermal camera can do for you? We are happy to hold a shorter training for you where we tell you more about the technology and how it can be used with the opportunity to ask questions. Does that sound exciting?
AX8 AX8 is a compact camera where you get a thermal camera and standard camera in one unit - a slightly simpler and cheaper version of the A50 / A70 with Smart Sensor. One of the advantag es of the AX8 is that you can monitor temperatures and get the camera to alarm in the event of excessive temperature differences. By detecting electrical and mechanical faults early on, you can prevent fires or other damage in for example electrical cabinets, warehouses or server rooms.
”Very interesting introduction course to IR that describes both areas of application and background physical principles."
