The contact plate has been divided into two parts, both of which have their own contact pin

B IF U RC AT ED C ON TA C T

Can you distinguish between a bifurcated contact and a normal contact at a glance? A BIFURCATED CONTACT IS RELATIVELY EASY TO IDENTIFY.

The contact plate has been divided into two parts, both of which have their own contact pin. The pins move at the same time and make contact with their counterpart. This technology allows excellent reliability.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A BIFURCATED CONTACT?

We offer relays with bifurcated contacts from each relay series (MRC, QRC & IRC). Bifurcated contacts are the best option for connecting very low signals starting at 1 mA/5 V. A good example is connecting input signal from sensor to logic control. Standard contacts come with 0.2 μ gold plating, since gold conducts electricity better than most other metals. This ensures interference-free signal transmission.

• Available in MRC, QRC, and IRC series • 1 mA / 5 V • Gold-plated contacts as standard

The letter “T” in the item code means that the relay is equipped with bifurcated contacts.

New WADI cable gland series from Jacob The new WADI product family by Jacob features a completely redesigned gland rubber, which allows extensive sealing and tightening area. The new gland rubber exerts pressure on the cable even more smoothly, so that the cable sheath is safe against point loads. Not only does the smooth pressure protect the cable’s sheath, but the entire cable structure, ensuring interference-free signal transmission.

Extensive gasket area protects the cable sheath

Extensive sealing and tightening area

Integrated strain relief

For example, when using data, silicon, fibre optic, Ethernet, or coaxial cables, special attention must be paid to how the cable sheath is compressed. The new gland rubber is bipartite, which means that it can be used more extensively in case of different cable diameters in the same cable gland. The EMC spring can also be installed into other frames, thereby obtaining, for example, an EMC cable gland resistant

The inner gland rubber part can be removed in order to use thicker cables

OPTIMAL SAFETY SOLUTIONS IMPROVE COST-EFFECTIVENESS Text: Sari Lommerse Images: Mika Okko

EID Robotics Oy from Kuopio manufactured for Sinituote a palletizing robot cell capable of loading 18 different products at the same time in a compact space. The safety component solution supplied by OEM is a central part of the new automation system. At the Sinituote cleaning products factory in Kokemäki, the palletizing robot stacks product packages onto pallets. Several products arriving from the taping machine must be loaded at the same time; the robot identifies the products by the barcode and transfers them to the dedicated pallet.

Jari Helminen, CEO of EID Robotics, monitors the robot’s operation – he is there to check that the unit operates exactly as it is supposed to. − About 200 boxes go through here in an hour. The mass of the box and the number of pallets influence the rate: the less pallets there are and the lighter are boxes, the faster is palletizing performed, Helminen explains. Sinituote manufactures cleaning products, Kungs vehicle care products, and smoker bags. The factory has an injection moulding plant where plastic components for all

The challenge is in making the robot cell safe without slowing down or otherwise interfering with production.

products are manufactured. Own brushing department takes care of brushing. Several different products are produced at the same time.

Jari Helminen, CEO of EID Robotics Oy: − I like that there are new, smart safety devices. Traditional safety equipment is often cumbersome to implement and use.

On the left, Jukka Heiska Production Manager of Sinituote, and Jari Helminen CEO of EID Robotics Oy.

The new palletizing robot cell has 18 palletizing stations, which means that 18 different products can be loaded at the same time. Empty pallets go in along a lane and at each palletizing station a lane can ‘be opened from which filled-up pallets are removed one by one. The lanes are monitored by safety laser scanners making sure the employees cannot access the robot operation area while it is in operation.

7

The safety solution supplied by OEM includes Hokuyo safety laser scanners and Arion security fences.

− Whenever a person approaches the lane, the robot stops. After loading of a pallet is completed, an area change is made in the scanner, the pallet is removed and the safety area closed again, Helminen explains.

− Even though the robot’s operation area seems like a single area, it includes dozens of different areas monitored separately, and the safety scanner.

A NOVEL SOLUTION

THE SOLUTION IS ALSO COST-EFFECTIVE

When considering for their system an efficient method compliant with EU machinery safety requirements allowing limiting of the robot’s operation area, the safety solution supplied by OEM was finally chosen. It includes four Hokuyo safety laser scanners and Arion security fences. Safety scanners were chosen due to their versatility, Helminen says.

− The price/quality ratio of the solution is absolutely magnificent. In case of a light curtain solution, safety equipment would have made up a large part of the entire system’s price, since ten light curtains would have been required, and the volume of the work would also have been senseless.

OEM has been a co-operation partner of EID Robotics and one of its main supply channels of electrical and safety products since the beginning of the decade. When the palletizing robot system was launched last spring, OEM was a natural choice for the cooperation partner. − Our professional relations in the field of machine vision system components go way back. For example, here, at Sinituote, we use cameras supplied by OEM. OEM provides excellent technical expertise and product support, and our inquiries are answered quickly, Helminen says.

SAFETY LASER SCANNER FOR HIGHER SPEED The palletizing robot cell was delivered to Sinituote in November. Before this, EID Robotics assembled the cell at its own premises and tested it there. Jukka Heiska, Production Manager of Sinituote, is satisfied with the result. − Everything has worked smoothly. We make almost all of the machinery by ourselves, and as concerns safety, we perhaps include even too much protection. When we buy something ready-made, it must be almost as safe. In practice, it would have been impossible to implement the solution in question sensibly in any other manner. The safety laser scanners also speed up the operation, since we used to have to open doors and electrical locks before accessing the robot’s operation area. Introduction of the new palletizing cell is excellent news for the company’s employees as well. − Lifting of the boxes is ergonomically questionable, since it is repetitive and physically demanding work. Now, the employees can take up more pleasant tasks, Heiska says.

- We went through different alternatives for implementation of the safety solution. Hokuyo safety laser scanners turned out to be the most cost-effective and functional solution. They are also small in size and easy to program, say OEM Sales Engineer Ronie Schildt and Product Manager Tony Tarr.

Photoneo PhoXi 3D scanners PhoXi 3D scanners are based on sophisticated structured light imaging technology, in which the second camera in the traditional two-camera stereo capture has been replaced with a pattern projector.

The pattern projector generates a coding image on the surface of the item to be scanned, which allows accurate identification of the shapes. The greatest advantages of the technology used by Photoneo include independence Enter the component’s CAD model from the target surface shape or and specify pick up points material and improved imaging speed. The equipment’s embedded processing and control unit takes care of all the required calculations, producing final data as Point Cloud, Depth Map), normals, textures, and per pixel Confidence. Photoneo 3D Localization C++ SDK allows target localization with the help of CAD models. The system is provided with information about the target component by entering its CAD model, based on which the system searches for a matching component in the area scanned and sends information on the location of the component back to the system. In some cases, it is also possible to specify one or more pick-up points, which are considered when returning coordinates. Possible applications include, for example, various object recognition solutions, automatic picking and stacking, and inspection, measurement and analysis solutions.
