WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM
For the new Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam six monumental 17th century canal houses, situated on the UNESCO heritage protected Herengracht (Gentlemen’s canal) were connected, restored and renovated. The authentic structure of the houses brings timeless Dutch history to the Waldorf Astoria brand. Prime period pieces have been carefully restored such as a staircase that rises through gleaming marble and stucco, Rococo licks and curls and 17th-century ceiling paintings. Then comes an elegant newer layer, where the style is classic contemporary with strong reference to location and maritime history. All modern facilities were very carefully integrated, as seamlessly as possible. As in the famous Dutch paintings, the structure of the palaces creates the views within views, framing of spaces beyond. The Bel Etage has been visible from the canal side down the ages and Waldorf Astoria maintains that tradition having the most public areas at this level. Full height views to the garden and canal create the perfect setting for a celebration. Modern facilities sit perfectly within the setting of period luxury. The spacious and serene courtyard can be reached from the Souterrain.
The Peacock Alley has been extended down to this floor to invite guests into the garden. As opposed to the grand Bel Etage, the Souterrain is more intimate, making this the perfect location for the Spa, All day dining and Bar. Because the palaces have been used as a bank building for many years, heavy vaults were built at the Souterrain. Instead of breaking them down, they were transformed into a wine cellar and a robust vault bar, using the remaining treasure boxes as a gorgeous backdrop. On the upper floors there were numerous existing historical walls that had to remain intact. Existing penetrations could be blocked up but no new penetrations were allowed. Whilst this created a challenge, it has also led to a Guestroom arrangement that still retains the integrity of the individual canal houses. And, as no two rooms are the same, has given a wonderful variety throughout. While the top-range suites have period architectural elements intact, the rooms under the rafters are quirkier, with more of an individual charm. Throughout the buildings small pockets of space have provided opportunities to create the unexpected, making each of the 93 elegant rooms one of a kind.
