here can be nothing more important to a parent than the quality of education available to the children. O’Fallon offers parents and students choices, high quality and limitless opportunity to raise the bar in education. O’Fallon provides families the chance to broaden their horizons with top-rated preschools up through nationally recognized universities. In addition to formal education, O’Fallon supports self-education with a superior library system. All the O’Fallon school districts and private schools have dedicated cultural and arts learning initiatives so that your child receives a wellrounded and balanced academic life, providing an opportunity to grow and thrive with their unique talents and ambitions. No matter which school district you choose to live within, you have a guarantee of excellence, a promise of success and a choice to allow your child to flourish.

Public School Districts

O’Fallon is serviced by three school districts. The majority of the

city attends the Fort Zumwalt School District, which has been providing education to the O’Fallon area for 200 years. The western part of the city utilizes the facilities of Wentzville School District, while the south to southeastern areas attend the Francis Howell School District. Statistical data shows that test scores in reading and math within the city of O’Fallon are 5 to 6 percent higher than the national average and up to 20 percent higher than the Missouri average. Great academics is fostered by a community spirit for lifelong education and a citywide commitment to excellence and family values.

Fort Zumwalt School District

The Fort Zumwalt School District serves grades K–12, with a reported enrollment of 18,703 students in 2006. Average daily attendance to the school was over 95 percent in 2006, indicating that these children are really enjoying their time at school! Over 73 percent of all students decide to pursue advanced learning degrees post graduation. The student-to-teacher ratio is excellent, with approximately

21 students in every class, indicating that your child will receive the individual attention needed to have success in education. Dr. Bernard Du Bray is the current superintendent, overseeing the 15 elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools and one alternative high school. The boundaries for each group of schools are designed so that your child has continuity of friendships and a feeling of security as they progress from kindergarten to high school graduation. Four Fort Zumwalt high schools participate in the A+ School Program. Improvements in the district include additions to the West Middle School and Mount Hope Elementary. You can rest assured that a child receiving an education within the boundaries of Fort Zumwalt School District will have a commitment to excellence in education and continuous improvement.

Francis Howell School District

Francis Howell School District lives by their motto of “Building Excellence Together,� an attempt to bridge home, school and community to achieve academic excellence and build a bright future for today’s youth. There are three early childhood centers, 10 elementary schools, five middle schools and four high schools within the district. Total enrollment in 2006 was 18,203, with an average class size of 18 students. Nearly 70 percent of teachers in this district hold advanced degrees in education, and 87 percent of students continue their education post-graduation. The district runs a Summer Advantage Academy that’s designed to help students transition from elementary school to middle school and then on into high school, with hands-on learning experiences and advanced learning courses — education should be a yearlong activity, because the mind works 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Of course, education should begin as soon as possible, and the Francis Howell Preschool is dedicated to early childhood development through a philosophy that learning is child-centered, process-oriented and choice-driven.

Private Schools

eight elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools. Over 50 percent of the teachers carry advanced degrees, and almost 100 percent are considered to be high-caliber teachers with either advanced degrees, areas of expertise, long-term experience or as graduates of nationally recognized educational institutions. Enrollment in 2006 was 9,625 students, with an average class size of 22 students. Over 82 percent of students in this district elect to pursue higher education. Wentzville Holt High School is a participant in the A+ School Program, which is a school-improvement initiative established by the Outstanding Schools Act of 1993. Wentzville Holt High School was the first high school in St. Charles County to receive A+ designation in 1997. The district has advanced-placement programs as well as vocational offerings to ensure success for our children as they emerge into the real world.

Private schools are abundant in the area as well. There are many private elementary schools within St. Charles County offering a variety of learning opportunities. St. Charles County also has four private high schools: Living World Christian High School, Barat Academy, St. Dominic High School and Lutheran High School of St. Charles County, giving families many choices when looking for educational facilities for their children.

Library

Learning is fostered by an esteemed library system within St. Charles County. The motto is “Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere, the St. Charles City-County Library District is Your Answer Place!â€? St. Charles City-County libraries are proud of their online achievements; they have brought the enjoyment of reading and research into the 21st century with online book clubs, eBooks and reading lists. There is an abundance of activities for children as well, both online and off. Kids can use “Kids Click” to access homework help, reading lists, summer activities, Web searches, games and craft ideas. There is also a summer reading program for preschool through fifth grade levels. The program has loads of activities, such as reading contests, puppet shows, group story time and a mystery hunt. Higher Education

Grown-ups can cash in on the learning too, with several opportunities to excel. Earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree at Lindenwood, Maryville or Webster universities. You can even earn your doctorate at Webster University. Vatterott College offers bachelor’s and associate degrees in many fields. St. Charles Community College offers two-year degrees and technical certifications. • Lindenwood University is an independent, comprehensive Presbyterian academic university offering bachelor’s, master’s and post-master’s degrees on a 358-acre campus. • Maryville University was founded in 1872 and offers study in arts, sciences, and business. • Webster University is nationally and world-renowned university offering advanced degrees in several fields, including nursing, business and education. They have campuses around the globe and have multiple opportunities for international study. The local Webster campus is within the WingHaven community. Progress West Health Care Center

The latest addition to the O’Fallon medical family is a full-service hospital providing emergency care, medical and surgical inpatient care, critical care, obstetrics, outpatient surgery, and diagnostic and imaging services. The Progress West Health Care Center is affiliated with BJC Healthcare, one of the largest nonprofit health care providers in the nation. Progress West is the first newly built acute-care hospital in the St. Louis metropolitan area in 20 years. The doors of this facility opened on February 20, 2007, giving O’Fallon 72 patient beds, 230 new employment opportunities and a healthy looking future. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital

Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital serves citizens of St. Charles, Warren and Lincoln counties and is an acute-care hospital licensed for 111 beds. This facility is also affiliated with nationally renowned BJC Healthcare and has a partnership with the distinguished Washington University School of Medicine, providing a world-class network of health care physicians, resources, technology and services. They have a staff of over 600 physicians specializing in more than 30 fields of expertise to ensure that you receive the best possible care and assistance. In the past decade, the facility has expanded its offerings and its facilities to include the Siteman Cancer Center at BarnesJewish St. Peters Hospital, the comprehensive Cardiology Center, the free-standing Surgery Center, the Women’s Center, and the Vascular Interventional Center. SSM St. Joseph Hospital West

SSM St. Joseph Hospital West is a 125-bed suburban, acute-care community hospital located in the heart of western St. Charles County. It is easily accessible from Interstate 70 in Lake Saint Louis, just minutes

away from O’Fallon, Wentzville and the other growing communities of St. Charles, Warren and Lincoln counties. St. Joseph Hospital West sees more than 66,000 outpatients, delivers more than 1,200 babies, performs more than 6,000 surgeries and treats more than 35,000 emergencies each year. It is the largest provider of emergency and obstetric services in the county. The facility continues to expand its specialty physician services to meet the needs of a growing community. H.W. O’Fallon is Renaud Spirit Center a town that invites everyone to come together in spirit, symbolizing community pride, cohesiveness, culture and caring.

Welcome to your recreation destination! The Renaud Spirit Center is 66,000 square feet of fun and fitness. Built in 2004, the recreation center has it all, with a lazy river, water slides, pools and a full fitness center, complete with group classes and plenty of challenge for all levels of fitness. The center is open all year long — including the water slides — no child could ever complain about being bored here! The fitness center is over 6,000 square feet, with a 0.10-mile indoor track, 35 cardio machines, 33 weighttraining machines and personal training available. All the cardio equipment is equipped with a personal television with seven stations and radio. For active adults with active children, the Kid’s Korner provides quality child care while parents enjoy “me” time. There is simply no excuse not to exercise.

The Natatorium is actually an indoor water park. There is a lazy river, indoor waterfalls and a 185-foot water slide. The center has swimming lessons available all year long, and adults can enjoy aqua aerobics. Even when it’s 0 degrees outside, you can bet that the pool water inside will be a warm 84 degrees. Not only is the Renaud Spirit Center a family fitness center, it is also an art gallery, a food court and an event center. You can rent space to have a bridal shower, birthday party or just a nice gathering of the people you love and care for. Even Fido can take a dip once the season is over with the Pool Paws for Humane Laws charity dog swim, which benefits the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.

Do you miss the days in high school or college when you were on a winning team? Look no further than O’Fallon’s athletic programs to boost you back into the team spirit. There are adult volleyball, softball, soccer and basketball teams to join — there’s even a men’s flag football team. The kids can get in on the action with the same athletic programs as the adults — but please parents, remember to play nice if you compete against the kids! Golf

O’Fallon is a golfer’s paradise, with over 35 courses within a 20-mile radius of the city, four of which have won national awards. • WingHaven Country Club is a private club with an 18-hole, award-winning course with over 7,000 yards of challenges and pristine greens. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1999. • The Links at Dardenne is a public 18hole, par-72 course. The clubhouse and outdoor pavilion offer a panoramic view of the 18th hole, and it’s a perfect place to host a wedding reception or other special event. • St. Charles Business Record rated The Falls Golf Club as the No. 1 public golf course in St. Charles County. This 18hole, par-71 course opened in 1995 and has a clubhouse, driving range, pro shop and banquet facilities set on a gorgeous course of Bermuda grass.

• The Roost at Pheasant Run is also located in O’Fallon. In addition to offering 18 holes of golf, they have a miniature golf course, a driving range and a pro shop. • Persimmon Woods, Innsbrook, Bear Creek and Old Hickory, while not located in O’Fallon, are premier courses in the area.

City Parks

With seven city parks and over 368 acres of recreation area, you can rest assured that there is plenty of space and opportunity to enjoy time off work and time with your family. • Civic Park contains the Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center, two playgrounds, Civic Hall, a bandstand and even two horseshoe pits. It is also home to the O’Fallon Historical Society Log Cabin Museum. • Fort Zumwalt Park has a playground, pavilion and a scenic walking path. For the fishermen in the family, you can catch a whopper in Lake Whetsel. History tours are given on Sundays in the summer at the Historic Darius Home and Civic Park’s Log Cabin Museum. • Dames Park offers a bike and hike trail complete with a fitness course, two playgrounds and three football fields. • O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce celebrates the Fourth of July with an annual 5K run and one-mile fun run/walk. The 5K run is a U.S.A.T.F. certified run and draws runners from far and wide. • O’Fallon is host to Missouri’s secondlargest Fourth of July festival — the

O’Fallon Heritage and Freedom Fest. Celebrate the birth of the United States of America with a colorful parade, live music, a carnival and a petting zoo. To top it all off, there are TWO nights of fireworks — definitely more bang for you buck! • In the fall, you can enjoy a stroll through the city to attend the Fall Festival and Craft Bazaar. Delectable dishes and homemade crafts entice you to come out and meet the town, giving ample opportunity to meet new people, see new things and enjoy homemade goodies. • When the snow falls, you can look about the city and see a twinkle of holiday spirit everywhere you look. The Celebration of Lights is the largest light festival in St. Charles County and is a huge tourist attraction for Midwesterners. This event is supported by the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce. Everyone can participate who wants to — it surely takes a Holiday Village to string up the more than 1 million lights and 50 holiday scenes that are staged in Fort Zumwalt Park. Visitors are invited to drive through this Winter Wonderland that runs from November until December. • The O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce presents an Art and Wine Gala Evening in the spring. This black tieoptional evening gives an opportunity for men and women to step out in style. Local restaurants, along with local and national distributors of adult beverages, showcase their premium products; artists display their crafts, with the options to buy; and music is played by a live band for listening pleasure and dancing the night away. • The O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce also holds a Golf Tournament each

St. Charles County Parks & Recreation

The St. Charles County Parks Department traces its origin to the fall of 1995, when a citizens’ group formed a task force to address open space and cultural issues for the county’s 2010 Master Plan. By the end of 2005, the department reached its 10-year goal of acquiring more than 2,000 acres of land for development in eight designated park areas. Located throughout St. Charles County, these parks offer passive recreation areas, sites of historical interest, picnic shelters, camping sites, special events facilities, fishing lakes and much more. At this time, the department has opened seven parks for public use: Broemmelsiek Park (near Defiance), Hideaway Harbor Park (near Portage des Sioux), Indian Camp Creek Park (near Foristell), Klondike Park (near Augusta), Matson Hill Park (near Matson), Quail Ridge Park (near Wentzville), and the Youth Activity Park (in Dardenne Prairie). Several new parks (including Towne Park, which will be located along Highway 61 in northwestern St. Charles County) are under development and anticipated to open over the coming years. Each of the county’s parks offers different and unique experiences. The department is committed to enhancing the recreational, natural and historical heritage of St. Charles County. Throughout the year, programs, events and activities are offered for people of all ages, abilities and interest levels, including star-gazing programs, the Park Explorer Kids’ Club, guided bike rides, dog obedience training classes, and the Paint Your County Park art competition. Efforts are under way to preserve the native plant and wildlife species (focusing on those native to Missouri’s ecosystems) and to maintain a portion of the parks in their natural setting. The recent formation of the Historical Advisory Board and the addition of a park historian are designed to collect, preserve and promote historic structures, artifacts and records throughout the county. ’Fallon’s longtime slogan, “Tradition with Vision,” is a perfect compliment to this municipality with big-city opportunity. It is no accident that O’Fallon’s population and business growth have been booming for so many years. The mayor and City Council support right growth in conjunction with right action, meaning that the city’s government is working hard to maintain the family-friendly American dream that makes O’Fallon unique. The mayor serves a four-year term, while eight council members serve two-year terms with staggered elections. This system ensures that there are four seats open each election term, which guarantees that citizens have fresh choices every year and continuity of planning efforts. City Council elections are held annually in April. This means that if you want to be involved in your city’s government, you have every opportunity to try; O’Fallon upholds the American ideal of democracy and equality. In recent years, O’Fallon has been recognized by both Money Magazine and Relocate America as a top-tier location in which to live. In 2006, Money Magazine published their “Best Places to Live” report and

They work so hard that in 2007 Relocate America recognized O’Fallon as one of the top 10 places to live in America alongside big cities like Chicago and San Francisco. Relocate America also considers culture as well as economic and residential growth for its top-tier cities. O’Fallon is a beautiful city with opportunity around every corner for every type of person. The city’s focus is now on maintaining positive growth in residential and commercial avenues. In the first half of 2007, the city issued 98 occupancy permits to improve residential development. In the first quarter of 2007, they approved over 1,300 business licenses. Not only do they promote commercial and residential growth, the leaders of O’Fallon support employment as well; the city employs over 350 citizens and is recognized as a top employer of the area.

The government does not operate behind closed doors. O’Fallon citizens are encouraged to participate with distribution of information through television channel 21. Channel 21 is O’Fallon’s public portal to government activities, meetings, festivals and community events. You can tune in to watch the Council meetings, Planning and Development Committee, the Public Works Committee, and other government programming. Channel 21 has a fun side as well — it highlights local sports, community theater and arts, as well as adult enrichment opportunities. Channel 21 encourages community participation and is an outlet for citizen creativity. O’Fallon also encourages youth leadership through the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. This council is open to high school juniors and seniors and meets on the third Tuesday of each month. The council was designed to give local youth an avenue to learn about government and leadership. Way Point Church is one of the area churches that believes in a 360 degree life involving Christ and his teachings. Services are held weekly, with a casual atmosphere and with open arms to children. Services are held at John Weldon Elementary School each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Members of the church can participate in a wide array of activities, including small group Bible study, Children’s Connection and movie nights. The pastor, Lance Swearengin, founded this church in the hopes of bringing faith back to the community with an ease and grace to respect Christ’s will that all be able to worship with freedom and clarity. A

Settled in 1856, O’Fallon was established and named in the spirit of friendship and family by Nicholas Krekel.

ristotle once said, “If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development.” If you want to understand O’Fallon, you must know of its establishment, its development and how this rich and varied history has allowed O’Fallon, Missouri, to grow from a tiny rural village to a vibrant and sprawling suburban center while retaining the morals and values of its hometown heritage. O’Fallon’s story reads like a parable for American settlement and development in the Midwest and as a beacon of hope to those who came to America and made their mark on the society that still thrives today. Settled in 1856, O’Fallon was established and named in the spirit of friendship and family by Nicholas Krekel, a German immigrant. The Krekel family held John Benjamin O’Fallon as a close friend and inspiration. The O’Fallon legacy hearkens back to the birth of the nation, as its patriarch was a Revolutionary War hero and its matriarch has familial ties to the Lewis and Clark expedition so integral to the development of America. The namesake for the town brought an entrepreneurial spirit to the Midwest and solidified the values of hard work, philanthropy and education that are still alive in the city of O’Fallon today. The Krekel family

also espoused the Midwestern value of modesty, honoring the O’Fallon family’s contribution to the nation by naming the town they established after someone else. It’s no wonder that the town’s slogan, “O’Fallon: A Good Place to Live,” rings just as true today as it did over 150 years ago. History lovers will appreciate that O’Fallon’s roots lie in, and grew from, the pioneer days of exploring and settling the land. Jacob Zumwalt was personally encouraged by the family of Daniel Boone to settle in the area that is today’s O’Fallon, Missouri, in the late 1700s. Because of their capacity to accept and adapt to cultures different from their own, the Zumwalts were able to befriend and respect the Native Americans and their culture, which helped to reduce violent disputes with the Native Americans. That cultural tolerance is part of what makes O’Fallon a good place to live. The Zumwalt family also established Christianity in the area by hosting Methodist church services in their home, welcoming the settlers and the natives of the area to attend. In essence, Jacob Zumwalt was the area’s very first American citizen, bringing his fierce love of nature, his love of God and his love of family to create the very same ideals that still permeate the town spirit today. Of historical note, the Zumwalt family home was

used as a “homestead fort” during the War of 1812. The railroad was responsible for the burgeoning attitude of Americans to pursue our “Manifest Destiny” and fostered a belief that Americans had been given boundless opportunity for the pursuit of greatness, happiness and freedom. Nicholas Krekel saw his family land as an opportunity to build something great and wondrous, to bring people to the West, and to build a legacy for his family. He started the town with a rail depot, a general store and a post office — all he needed next was people. Progressive people came in droves to build the railroad, settle the land and reap the bounty of the rich soil. O’Fallon was born in the shadow of the looming Civil War and, as was the town’s legacy, swore an allegiance to the Union to support right thinking and moral action. This steadfast resolve to defend their moral beliefs again tested the Krekel courage as the Southern cause, with leadership from O’Fallon settler Darius Heald, was celebrated, and the Krekel home was ransacked and partially burned for the family’s Unionist views. Arnold Krekel believed that Heald’s sympathy was misplaced and imposed a $2,000 bond, a small fortune at that time, on Darius Heald in order to secure the town’s loyalty

to the Union and to President Abraham Lincoln. You can still see the home of Darius Heald in Fort Zumwalt Park today; tours are given on the first and third Sundays in the summer months. The history of O’Fallon does not end with the pioneer days and the Civil War. Religious and educational development in the area was strong and remains strong to this day because of deep-rooted family values and a belief in continuous improvement and progressive action. The economic history of the area was heralded by the entrepreneurial spirit begun by the Krekels and continues today with the economic boom that’s taken place in the city during the past few decades. One of the signers of O’Fallon’s charter in 1912, Fred Jacoby was a man of “firsts.” Jacoby opened O’Fallon’s first real pharmacy and established the first telephone company in the area; he then served as the town’s first mayor. He further cemented the town’s ideals towards progress and economic success that remain the resolve of O’Fallon today as the town continues to make history. Sisters of the Most Precious Blood

In 1875 the motherhouse for the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood was established in O’Fallon, Missouri. They are located at 204 North Main Street in O’Fallon, where they educated many women and men at St. Mary’s Academy and St. Mary’s College, which were previously located on the O’Fallon property. The Academy and College are no longer in existence but for many years provided a superior education and a religious strength to all who attended. Several denominations throughout the United States have benefited from the skills of the Sisters in the Ecclesiastical Art Department, who make church vestments and paraments. On August 1, 1997, they sold three of their buildings and adjoining acreage to the City of O’Fallon for the use of a Municipal Centre and Police Department. As they live the values of hospitality, reconciliation, presence and responding to human needs, their presence in the O’Fallon community has added to the quality of life of its residents. www.ofallonchamber.org 25
