CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome to David Farrington Park for the first of two club critical matches, which have the potential to define our future at Team Wellington FC. For a few seasons now we have threatened to be crowned the top team in the Oceania Football Confederation only to stumble at the last hurdle. Our opponents today, Lautoka FC, will prove to be as difficult an opponent as any we have faced in this and in previous campaigns. We visited with them mid-season and experienced a torrid time and we expect the same today. Today we welcome our Fijian friends to our place. I am hoping that we are able to host a maximum attendance at our small ground which will create an atmosphere that finals football deserves.

to thank for assisting us in getting to this point. To our sponsors -who ensure that we can even get the season started have been enormous in their continued conviction to our cause. I know I say this often, but please when you are considering the purchase of products or services put these generous businesses at the top of your list. To the Team Wellington staff and volunteers have also worked tirelessly to keep the machine welloiled when at times we have faced challenges.

Throughout the past two weeks since that frenetic semi-final win at Auckland City, we have dared to dream about the possibilities of really putting Team Wellington on the footballing map.

To the board who have remained committed, some for multiple seasons, to meet the challenges of competing in amateur football with all the resource challenges that this brings, and lastly to the players who have brought us this far - You deserve to be here and what you do over the next two matches determines the reward.

We have so many people

The messages that are

delivered both here and in Lautoka will be very similar, I am sure. Both teams are here today on merit and we will witness the skills of the two best teams across our Oceania region which promises to be a tantalising proposition. From me and everyone at the club, enjoy the match‌Go TeeDubs! Peter Chote Chairman Team Wellington FC

UNITY A KEY TO TEAM WELLINGTON SUCCESS

Without a doubt, Team Wellington’s impressive display of football tactics and technique over 180 minutes in the OFC Champions League semi-final was the ushering in of a new era. The club from New Zealand’s capital will feature in their first final against a side they don’t play in the domestic league, in securing that berth they also ended the longest period of dominance of any club in Oceania. Team Wellington coach José Figueira has been around long enough to know what an accomplishment this is for the club he has resided over for the past two seasons. “The club is obviously very excited to be

contesting another final, and four years in-a-row for us is a huge achievement,” Figueira said. “I think over the last two seasons in particular we’ve seen a real strong evolution of the team and the group in the sense of our playing style and being able to be a lost more tactically flexible, being able to control games. “In those big matches, both domestically and as we saw in the semi-final against

Auckland City, when two top teams are playing it’s those key ingredients that make all the difference and as a group I think we’ve really matured and grown leaps and bounds to where we were last year. “I guess the quality of our play and our focus and organisation have been the three key elements of where we find ourselves right now.” That’s the perspective of someone very close to the inner workings of the team. But consider also what Team Wellington’s success both on the field and off it, looks like to a neutral outsider. When you talk to people about the club, there are two key things which regularly come up in the conversation – a sense of unity and heart.

The players and those surrounding them whether as coaches, volunteers or supporters, have 100 per cent belief in themselves and what they’re trying to achieve and that is very evident. “I think it’s a bit of both and it’s the way I like to work, and my staff around me,” Figueira said of whether that is something they’ve consciously tried to create, or if it has been an organic evolution. “Our job as coaches is to help the players showcase themselves on the field and I think you see that in the group, they really enjoy the way we play and work extremely hard for each other. “That’s really bred on the training pitch. We focus on all those elements, but at the same time with sports you are playing with friends and you want to have fun – or as we like to call here ‘serious fun’.

“So it’s great to see the players go out on the pitch each week and just show their true personalities. Then in terms of the group, the players, we’ve just got fantastic people. “Since the start of the season, off the back of last year but especially this year, every single person puts the team before themselves and I think that’s been a real key element of our progression this season.” With unity, passion and a shared objective driving them, Team Wellington are well and truly focused on the two-legged final of the OFC Champions League. And playing the first match on familiar ground certainly provides a good foundation for the squad to continue building on their success this season.

“First of all, we’ve got a really good record at home,” Figueira explained. “We’re obviously used to playing at home, we’re really comfortable with the surroundings here – the pitch, the quality of the surface – all of these things really complement the way we want to play and I think we saw in the semi-final. “We didn’t get the goal we might have deserved on another day, but I think if we put in a similar performance like we did, that will give us some confidence and a buffer leading into that second leg in Fiji. “So we’re always very happy to be playing at David Farrington.”
