KALTACK REFLECTS ON LAUTOKA JOURNEY

As one of three import players Ni-Vanuatu defender Brian Kaltack has helped form the backbone of Lautoka FC in the 2018 edition of the OFC Champions League. The 25-year-old defender, along with New Zealand midfielder Cory Chettleburgh and veteran Solomon Islands striker Benji Totori, has made a solid a contribution to the Fijian side’s OFC Champions League campaign including scoring the winner in a tight quarter final against AS Dragon in Tahiti. Having journeyed across the Pacific plying his trade, Kaltack believes the fit with Lautoka has been instantaneous and is reflected in the results the side has achieved so far. “As the foreigners, the import players, we get on well with the team and so far it’s been good. “We’re a team to watch,” Kaltack said.

He’s not wrong. Few expected Lautoka to get as far as the semi-finals after being absent from the regional stage for over ten years. Now they have the opportunity to go all the way to the final and Kaltack said it has been an amazing journey so far. “Every first game in the pool is important and we headed into that game with the idea in our minds that we have to win it,” he recalled of the opening Group C match against Madang. “We scored the first goal but then suddenly they equalised. We had to find a way to keep the boys together and on track.”

AS Venus was a different story althogether for Lautoka according to Kaltack. “You can see from the start that we underestimated them and they scored the first goal because of that,” he admited. “To chase one goal ahead of us you have to be strong and like I said earlier, we just had to come together, pull together and overcome the challenge. “To be honest, I thought we were going to lose the game but after that we came from behind and scored a winning goal.” With two wins under their belt Lautoka had every right to feel confident going into the final group stage encounter against reigning regional champions Auckland City FC. “For myself, I had confidence for the team that we can do it, we can beat Auckland City or we can play some systems to beat them,” Kaltack said. “I think we went into the game with high intensity, high morale among the boys and the coaches as well.

“Before we went we knew they were the best team, a good team from Tahiti and their group winners. “But we prepared really well for the game, we came together as a team and managed to be the winning side.” Kaltack is modest about the role he played in sending Lautoka to their first OFC Champions League semi-final. His 89th minute header proved the winner in a tight match that otherwise looked to be heading to extra time. “That was interesting,” he said, “it was the 85th, 89th minute and there was a corner kick. “I went up there with only one condition - I score this goal or we go to extra time. “I just went across and met the ball. I didn’t know that I had scored a goal I just headed it and fell to the ground. When I stood up all the boys were cheering and running towards me so I just celebrated the goal with them,. “It was crazy. We deserved it.”

“We did well in the first half but after one of us got a red card and we were a man down we had to be smart. We tried our best and it was still a good game even though we lost.”

This weekend Lautoka will face their toughest challenge yet as they take on Marist FC in the first of the two-leg home-and-away semi-final.

Next up was another long voyage for Lautoka as they prepared to take on AS Dragon of Tahiti in the one-off quarter final at Stade Pater in Papeete.

“I’ve played with and against the guys from Marist and I know them. For us, I beleive in our game plan and if we stick to it everything will be alright.

Kaltack said the journey was tough on his side as they had to travel to Auckland, day trip down to Wellington for entry visas for French Polynesia, before finally taking the five hour flight after another evening in Auckland.

“I belive in this team and I believe we will go as far as we’re meant to.”
