Welcome to the Fall issue of Oilfield Conference magazine, the number one source for conference and exhibition news and listings. This is the time of year when Conferences come thick and fast – so check out our exclusive round-up of conferences and exhibitions, meetings, summits and round-tables, to be sure of not missing anything. You’ll find our Conference Calendar on pages 43, 44, 45 and 46. And this is also the time when we all resign ourselves to Summer being over and the business of work really getting under way. Time to think about data security and getting our mobile technology right up-to-date – we offer a few hints on necessary precautions, plus several cool conference-related Apps for you.
FEATURED CONFERENCE In this issue we bring you a quick preview of the highlights of Gastech, our featured Conference. One of the biggest meetings of the gas and LNG sector, now in its 40th year, it’s being held between October 8 and October 11, in the ExCel Centre in London’s Docklands. Less long-established but still wide-ranging are the ADIPEC oil and gas Conference, which has made its home in Abu Dhabi, and the World Refining Technology Summit in Brussels. We offer you a few pointers to those, too – along with several other interesting meetings.

COULD SAUDI ARABIA REALLY CEASE OIL EXPORTS? Questions are often asked about the reliability of Saudi oil reserves’ estimates. However, an influential recent report from analysts at Citigroup has posed new doubts over the kingdom’s ability to retain its role as the world’s oil market safety valve.
A
recent report by Citigroup has challenged the notion that Saudi Arabia can continue to be relied upon as an important oil exporter for generations to come. Basing its assessment on current trends of production, reserves’ depletion and domestic consumption, Citigroup analysts concluded that the kingdom could become a net oil importer by about 2030.
• ISSUE OCT - DEC 2012
Riyadh would undoubtedly step in to curb domestic oil demand long before its exports dried up, but there is a wider lesson to be learned from the report. Saudi Arabia’s oil production has now reached 11.1 million barrels of oil a day (b/d), equal to about 13% of global oil supply. Yet the country itself already consumes 3.4 million b/d, equivalent to about 30.6% of its total production, mainly as a motor fuel and power sector feedstock.
GROWING DOMESTIC NEEDS About half of all electricity in the coun-
try is produced by oil-fired power plants. Power consumption is growing by 8% a year on the back of population
growth and rising residential demand. The government hopes that nuclear and solar power can provide most of 9
FEATURE the additional generating capacity that will be required over the next 20 years.
moderate prices - and we will meet any additional demand from our customers.
However, very little progress has been made on encouraging the development of either technology to date. Plans for 80 GW of nuclear generating capacity have been repeatedly delayed and little effort has been put into developing domestic expertise in nuclear technology, partly because of pressure from the United States over the proliferation of nuclear technology.
The market is well balanced, forward cover remains within an acceptable range and inventories are more than adequate. We will continue to work in collaboration with other Gulf Cooperation Council nations and with OPEC to defend the stability of the oil market,” he concluded.
Perhaps most importantly, the government continues to subsidise domestic consumption of oil and refined petroleum products. Primary energy consumption per person is approaching 8 tonnes of oil equivalent a year, more than double the average in Western Europe or Japan and even ahead of the U.S.
In practice, it seems highly unlikely that the country will become a net oil importer by 2030, as suggested in the Citigroup report. The country’s entire economy is built upon oil exports and the government would surely act to reduce domestic consumption if the source of 82% of its export revenues were threatened.
• ISSUE OCT - DEC 2012
Much of this demand stems from the country’s climate and is therefore unlikely to change. Most water is produced by power-hungry desalination plants, while most residential power supplies are consumed by air conditioning. Falling Saudi oil exports would affect both the volume of internationally tradable oil and also market flexibility. Despite sustained high oil prices, Saudi Arabia continues to act as the safety value (swing producer) for the global oil market, bringing surplus production capacity on- and off-stream as and when required. In mid-September, Saudi oil minister Ali Al Naimi said: “Saudi Arabia is concerned about rising oil prices in the international oil market. The current high price of oil is simply not supported by market fundamentals.” He continued: “Saudi Arabia will as always take all necessary steps to ensure the market is well supplied and to help 10
IS THERE THE POLITICAL WILL?
Repeated attempts to make much greater use of domestic gas reserves for power generation have largely failed, in the main because of restrictions on foreign investment. Huge changes to the upstream investment regime will be required if previously undeveloped gas fields are to be brought on stream. There is certainly scope for greater gas production. Gas would surely displace oil in the thermal generation mix if oil exports were to fall over an extended period. In addition, Saudi Arabia possesses some of the greatest solar power potential in the world, both in the form of photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal. Global investment in solar thermal is now increasing, while PV production costs are falling. Again, political will is all that stands in the way of Saudi Arabia becoming a huge solar power producer. Moreover, falling oil exports would
force Riyadh to cut domestic fuel subsidies. The subsidies have been retained in order to calm social tensions, but the erosion of oil income would certainly have a far more profound impact upon national cohesion. If subsidies are greatly reduced or even lifted, it is vital that the process is carried out gradually. Attempts by other countries, such as Nigeria, to lift fuel subsidies overnight generally trigger popular protests and a government Uturn. It would be far better for Riyadh to begin the process now than to wait until they are forced into taking drastic action.
TECHNICAL ADVANCE SHOULD HELP Finally, the Citigroup projections are based on continued increases in both population and per capita consumption. However, continued growth in per capita consumption cannot be taken for granted. There is a finite amount of electricity that can be used in air conditioning and water desalination, and technological advances should actually reduce power consumption per unit production in such technologies. However, the report does highlight the demographic and economic challenges facing long-term global oil supplies. The United Nations predicts that the global population will increase from 7 billion in 2011 to 9 billion by 2050. More importantly, economic development in Latin America, Asia and Africa is driving up per capita energy consumption at a rapid pace. Even putting aside well-trodden arguments about peak oil, in the future ever greater pressure is going to be put on the reserves of the world’s biggest oil producers.

TECHNOLOGY
BUMP Attending any conference presents the opportunity to make new contacts and network with new industry people. In the past, the process of collecting contact information for all these new people was a chaotic exercise in stowing business cards, scribbling down names and numbers, and doing it all while trying to shake hands and look calm rather than flustered. Now, a new cloud-based application called Bump takes making contacts to a whole new level. Bump’s design team describes the dual-platform iOS/Android app as “the easiest way to share”, and that is not an unmerited description. You see, Bump is a free app that allows any two mobile devices running the app to be simply “bumped” together to share contact information.
Also intended as a means of sharing photos, Bump lets the user create a virtual business card to be shared with new acquaintances. Using geo-location, the “bumped” devices share contact on the fly, through the cloud. In addition to transferring the virtual business card inside Bump, the app also transfers new contacts directly into the phone’s stored contacts. Bump is also a social networking tool that allows users to chat with contacts, and is fully cross-platform: an Android tablet can “bump” an iPad, for example. While not everyone is using Bump as of now, the app is rapidly gaining in popularity, with good reason. www.bu.mp
VOICE MEMOS Thankfully, one of the best apps to take with you wherever you go is built into the iPhone and some other smartphones and is only 99 cents for the iPad. Voice Memos is great for not only letting users record on-the-fly voice memos, but capturing entire speeches as well. If you want to record a keynote speaker whom you have wanted to hear speak for ages, Voice Memos is a simple, easy to use app that lets you do just that. The app makes use of the internal microphone inside the iPhone or iPad, but
can also be used with an external sound capture device. The user interface for Voice Memos features a simple bright-red “Record” button and a stop button, as well as a convenient volume meter onscreen for visual feedback. http://www.apple. com/ipodtouch/built-in-apps/voice-memos.html

OTHER TIPS Keep in mind that there are many other tablet apps that can come in handy, especially relating to the “travel” portion of your business trip. Many hotels and airlines offer proprietary apps that let you book, plan, and check in or out during your stay. Also, remember that many major events will offer a customized event app made just for attendees of the event. You’ll
want to check your invitation or search the website of the conference for details on installing such an app if it is offered, but the benefits of doing so can be quite compelling. Such event apps often offer audience interaction, supplemental information, and insider insight into the event’s schedule that are only available to those in attendance.
When planning your next trip to a business event, don’t forget to take your tablet. And make sure you give these apps a try, if you haven’t already, as well as check for any event-specific app that might be offered. Mobile computing devices can make the conferences and exhibitions you attend more useful, and more memorable. 42
