CONFERENCE
Perth, Australia, set to host 2012 Shutdown Conference
I
n an effort to overcome some of the obstacles associated with shutdown operations, the annual Shutdown Conference will bring together industry leading professionals from over 100 organizations worldwide. It will be held from August 21 to August 23, 2012, in the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle, in Perth, Australia.
There are ongoing concerns and challenges associated with shutdown, turnaround, and outage (STO) projects throughout the world today. As projects become more complex, the ability of large companies to effectively and reliably execute shutdowns through process leadership, project management and overall strategy will become increasingly important.
The conference will feature a number of keynote speakers who have a wide variety of expertise in different fields. Some of these professionals include: Tom Lenahan, Director of Tom Lenahan Limited; Silvia Damiano, Leadership Consultant and Author; Colin Young, Engineering Manager, Loy Yang Power; and Lee Taylor, Reliability Manager at Visy Pulp and Paper.
Overview of Conference Agenda Day 1 of the Shutdown Conference will feature a 5-hour workshop led by Tom Lenahan. The workshop will present an approach to planning which can simplify work and reduce the duration of shutdown by using what’s known as ‘The 5T Process’. The workshop will also help profes-
sionals apply the dynamics of challenge planning and employ ‘Ferrari Phenomenon’ thinking. Day 2 will feature a number of different sections, covering a wide range of topics including dynamic schedule
management, shutdown planning, asset management, outage success and the role of leadership in shutdown processes. The day will begin again with Tom Lenahan’s presentation titled ‘Leading from the Front as the Perfect Shutdown Manager’. He will

Over the course of three days, the event’s highlights will include an interactive workshop on approach planning to reduce shutdown duration, presentations that provide insights into the industry, networking activities, and a shutdown solutions showcase that features best practices, systems and technologies from a number of suppliers.

CONFERENCE be followed by Silvia Damiano who will be discussing ‘The Human Factor to Success’. Day 3’s agenda will include additional sections covering safety, turnaround times, logistics, communication, awareness and visual tools. The day will begin with a keynote presentation by Ted Lister on proven methods of enhancing worker performance.
• ISSUE 03 JUL - AUG 2012
The conference will run on two separate, parallel tracks, with two different presentations running simultaneously throughout the day.

Benefits of Attending The event will provide attendees with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with other professionals before, during and after the conference using a number of online tools and onsite forums. In addition, the conference will serve as a useful tool for anyone seeking to assess their strengths, weaknesses and overall decision-making abilities. Upon completion, attendees will be able to return to the workplace with a great deal of new knowledge, a re-
fined skill set, and a renewed sense of confidence in their own abilities. Professionals encouraged to attend include development managers, executives, scheduling coordinators, safety advisors, sales managers, engineers, estimators, company directors, turnaround specialists, and technicians. For more information regarding dates, times, conference agendas and contact information, individuals can visit the Shutdown Conference website at shutdownconference.com/shut.

Confronting Energy Paradoxes, set to take place from August 28 to August 31, 2012, in Stavanger, Norway, promises to be a good time for all. In addition to its conference and exhibition, the ONS 2012 international conference offers a threenight cultural festival, complete with culinary delights, concerts, fireworks and entertainment for attendees to enjoy. By Melissa Rothermel
Hosted by the ONS Foundation, the event focuses on the oil and gas in13
dustry, but for the past decade has also included alternative and renewable energy. This year’s main theme, “Confronting Energy Paradoxes”, will be reflected in the conference as well as the four-day exhibition. ONS has always been held in Norway’s energy capital, Stavanger. With Arctic ice dwindling year after year due to global climate change, the region is becoming an increasingly important oil exploration area. “Norway is and will be an important part of the Arctic adventure, even more so as things now are developing in the North,” said May-Lis Thorsson, ONS Conference manager, who said the Arctic is on the agenda for the conference. Taking place every second year, ONS is expected to attract more than 50,000 visitors from nearly 100 countries. With 1,351 exhibitors, the 2010 conference attracted 49,735 attendees from 91 countries.
• ISSUE 03 JUL - AUG 2012
“ONS has become an extremely international meeting place, and it shows in the number of countries participating,” Thorsson said. “We are very proud to have this number of international participants.” While many of those attendees are energy sector professionals – everyone from high-level executives to young professionals, Norwegian and international government officials will be in attendance as well. “We think it is important to have the view of decision makers from both authorities as well as the industry,” Thorsson said. Promising a multitude of prestigious international speakers, the conference portion of ONS will kick off August 28 with a contribution from His Majesty King Harald V himself. 14
In recent years, special parks have been introduced to ONS and will continue this year. Organized jointly by ONS, the Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway, the Innovation Park was introduced to the conference in 2004 and will feature 20 of the most innovative companies in Norway, including eDrilling Systems AS, focusing on eDrilling, Fishbones focusing on reservoir stimulation with fishbones, MD Group AS and its Marine Oil Spill Sweeper, and more.
In addition to the Innovation Awards, ONS presents several other awards, including the Distinguished Service Award, the Young Professional Company Award, the Best Stand Award and more.
The Innovation Park also supplements the event’s Innovation Awards. The Innovation Award was first presented in 1982, and the program has since expanded to present three awards that honor innovation in the industry.
Additional information on ONS, which will be held at the Stavanger Forum, can be found by visiting ONS.no. Visitors may register to attend the exhibition or conference up until the final day. Tickets can be purchased at ONS. no or onsite.
In 2008, the conference added a Renewable Energy Park, which was expanded in 2010. Established by Lyse and Statkraft, the 2010 park included exhibitors showcasing products and technologies in wave and tidal energy, offshore wind power and biogas. The final park, CCS, was introduced in 2010 and focuses on the entire carbon value chain from capture to transport and storage. At the heart of the exhibition will be the Centre Court, which was established in 2010 to offer an arena for presentations, debates and discussion. More than 60 presentations were held last year in the court, which worked in conjunction with the CCS Park and the Renewable Energy Park.
To provide the next generation with an opportunity to gain an insight into a world-leading industry in global technology and innovation, the final day of ONS is dedicated to students and includes a Jobs & Education Zone.
As a precursor to ONS, an International Oil and Gas Business Day conference will take place August 27 in the Lindesnes Conference Hall, Stavanger Forum. Organized by INTSOK Norwegian Oil & Gas Partners, the IOGBD provides an opportunity for international business executives in the oil and gas industry to meet and share their views on market development and business opportunities with key representatives from the Norwegian petroleum sector. Invited countries include Abu Dhabi, Angola, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
