All of these words and more have been uttered countless times to describe all that 2020 entailed. And they all ring true. For Belmont University, though, we would choose a different term to describe those 12 months. From starting the year with a merger and championship season to dealing with the devastation of a tornado and worldwide pandemic to hosting the final presidential debate in a unique election, at Belmont, 2020 was...

Printed on T-shirts and uttered in countless news broadcasts, the “Nashville Strong” theme echoed loudly in 2020, as Belmont’s hometown encountered more than its fair share of challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Music City particularly hard as an economy built on entertainment, tourism and health care felt the full weight of the health crisis. A March tornado and a Christmas Day bombing took an additional toll on our city, and these events, along with nationwide cries for racial justice, all impacted Belmont’s campus and demonstrated the remarkable resilience and empathy to be found among students, faculty and staff.

Other nursing students helped operate the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency’s COVID-19 call center.
Meanwhile, nursing, social work and fashion faculty and alumni contributed to the cause by creating muchneeded face masks early in the health crisis when facial coverings were difficult to find. The Great Debate Belmont partnered with HCA Healthcare to ensure proper health and safety protocols at the 2020 Presidential Debate on campus. THIS FALL HCA Healthcare offered their expertise
to support Belmont in implementing health protocols for the Oct. 22, 2020 Presidential Debate. In addition to leading local site planning in consultation with Cleveland Clinic (the global health advisor for all three debates) and the Metro Public Health Department, HCA Healthcare advised on safety measures, provided signage to promote universal masking and other protocols and, perhaps most importantly, facilitated more than 2,000 COVID-19 tests the week of the debate. Belmont’s commitment to safety extended to other practices as well, including keeping University and debate operation footprints as separate as possible, maximizing social distancing and conducting all classes virtually the day of and day before the debate.
Tested By a Tornado The campus united to show their support for their hometown. TORNADOES TORE A devastating path through
Middle Tennessee March 2-3, causing more than $1.6 billion in damage and killing 25 people. Thankfully, no members of the Belmont community were injured and the campus escaped unscathed, but five students and two employees were displaced from their homes, and many others experienced damage or lost power. University leadership quickly rallied to support those impacted, and the campus community engaged in unique projects to show their concern, including creating a mural that was placed on Freeman Hall. The piece was intended to provide a forum for healing while also showing a sign of solidarity and support for the Middle Tennessee community. In addition, Athletics created and sold #NashvilleStrong T-shirts with all proceeds benefiting the Middle Tennessee Tornado Relief Fund.

Pursuing Equity Belmont takes steps to build a stronger culture of inclusion. IN THE MIDST of the worldwide health pandemic,
Americans were also confronted in 2020 with another, even more insidious disease, one that has plagued the country for centuries: racism. Following last summer’s protests against racism and discrimination, Belmont held nearly 20 listening sessions with students, faculty, staff and alumni. The purpose was to hear about how the campus community was feeling in light of current events as well as to gain understanding of their experiences at Belmont to ensure each individual felt welcome, respected and valued. “Belmont is intent on being a part of the solution,” wrote Dr. Fisher. “We know that words alone are not enough. We must create a culture that values race, ethnicity and differences as contributing to the strength of our university. And, we must take action to change and build that culture.” The listening sessions led to 30 distinct actions the University wanted to prioritize to build on a culture of equity and inclusion, enhance educational efforts and provide additional support to students and the broader community. Initiatives included adding diversity and inclusion as one of seven strategic priorities in Belmont’s Vision 2025 plan, restructuring first-year courses to provide additional opportunities to learn about diversity and race and increasing student representation on the Welcome Home Diversity Council. One of the most visible efforts came with a project to more fully tell the history of the Belmont Mansion and the land on where the University now sits. Led by Belmont’s Faculty Senate, a memorial was installed on the newly named Freedom Plaza, which now honors the enslaved laborers who worked on the property in the mid-1800s by inscribing their names on the campus’ iconic fountain. A plaque on the site commemorates the plaza’s name by reflecting on the lyrics to the “Oh Freedom” spiritual and noting, “May our journey toward justice honor their memory and their legacy.”

Belmont’s new College of Medicine will seek to become the 156th school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. Dr. Bill Bates, a Meharry Medical College professor and the founder of electronic medical records company digiChart, will serve as the inaugural dean of the college. A noted physician and educator, Bates previously served as dean of the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Bates will focus immediately on recruiting faculty, developing the curriculum and attaining accreditation. He said, “With the academic reputation of Belmont University and the national reach and clinical breadth of HCA Healthcare, the new Belmont University College of Medicine will have immediate recognition. Even as a new medical college, it will quickly take its place among other outstanding medical schools and colleges in the United States.” The need for qualified, compassionate healthcare practitioners is substantial. According to data published by the Association of American Medical Colleges, “the United States could see an estimated shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 physicians… by 2033.” Belmont aims to help address this coming shortage by welcoming an inaugural class of 150 students, with an expected enrollment of 500-600 students when the College of Medicine reaches full capacity.

As he told a Belmont Vision student reporter, “Judy is my most trusted advisor. Her wisdom combined with her kind and loving heart provides me with input that has repeatedly helped me to avoid bad decisions. We have spent thousands and thousands of hours discussing everything from enrollment management strategies to building designs.” Their fingerprints can be found throughout the University, from the addition of innovative programs to architectural details of new construction to the University’s focus on environmentally sustainable initiatives. “I’m so proud,” Judy Fisher noted upon the completion of McWhorter Hall, which included the campus’s first green roof, “that Belmont’s innovations extend from classroom practices all the way to the very materials we use to construct our campus.” Those innovations also extended, thanks to the Fishers’ inspiration, to countless projects to benefit individuals, from the establishment of the Bridges to Belmont scholarship program to the public-private Rose Park partnership to even Belmont’s annual tradition to deliver poinsettias to elderly shut-ins in the neighborhood. While May 2021 marks the beginning of a new and hopefully more rest-filled chapter in their lives, Bob and Judy Fisher’s impact will on Belmont University will never be forgotten.

2020 PRESIDENT'S REPORT

O F F E R I N G E X TR AO R D I N A RY
G E N E RO S I T Y
While the COVID-19 public health crisis affected everyone, some individuals were impacted more than others as the virus took economic aim at numerous industries and jobs. The global financial impact added extreme uncertainty to an already difficult moment in time. Nevertheless, the Belmont faithful remained faithful. Whenever possible, donors stepped up again in 2020 to offer gifts of funding and resources to support Belmont students and the University’s mission. In a season that was anything but ordinary, these individuals demonstrated immense generosity and thoughtfulness. The entire Belmont community is humbled by, and grateful for, each and every gift. Thank you!
Leadership Commitments We gratefully acknowledge the following donors who have made a gift or pledge commitment totaling $25,000 or more to the University in 2020. $1,000,000+ Anonymous Ayers Foundation Jim and Janet Ayers Milton and Denice Johnson Drew Maddux Gaye Jeans Thomas

2020 PRESIDENT'S REPORT
63
“Former President Herbert Gabhart often said, ‘the best is yet to come for Belmont.’ I now understand that was much more than an expectation— —it is a prayer, and it’s now my turn to pray that same prayer.” —Retiring President Dr. Bob Fisher
