Director’s Note
David Auburn’s Proof tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of a brilliant mathematician, who works with a former grad student, Hal, to find any mathematical proofs worth publishing in her late father’s journals. Robert, Catherine’s father, was a mathematical genius. When Robert’s life ends, his legacy lives on in Catherine. However, Catherine is severely underestimated by her family and friends. They refuse to believe that a woman like her is capable of creating something groundbreaking because they have never seen her try before.
This is a play, on one level, about trust: trust that is gained and then ripped apart. Hal and Claire, Catherine’s sister, vie for her trust through their clumsy attempts at connection and relationship-building. Their attempts are flawed, however, and both emotional and physical connection fail because neither truly listens to Catherine. This ties into the title. Not only do the characters stumble upon a groundbreaking mathematical proof that becomes the center of the conflict, but the play is about trying to prove yourself against all odds.
Catherine tries to show Hal and Claire that she is capable of creating something magnificent like her father, while also showing that she is more than his illness. She is also trying to prove this to herself; Catherine must learn to trust her abilities and her instincts about her gifts and talents. As this story unfolds, I invite you to watch a young woman come to the realization that while trust can easily be shaken, it can still grow into something…elegant.
