Director’s Note About a year ago, Department of Theatre and Dance chair Brent Maddox sent me the Blue Stockings script and asked me to consider directing it for the 2023-2024 season. I was unfamiliar with the play, and he told me that a group of theatre students saw a production of it in Belfast during a study abroad trip in June 2022. The students responded very positively to the production and Brent thought that it would fit in nicely at Belmont. After an initial reading, it was evident to me that this play would be a great addition to our 20232024 season. Despite being set more than 120 years ago, the themes explored (including equality for women, the emergence and subsequent challenging of scientific theories, biological vs. chosen family, and rapidly changing societal expectations for men and women) are still incredibly relevant today. The relationships between and among the characters are familiar: roommates, classmates, teacher/student, romantic partners, siblings, and colleagues. A desire to learn supersedes almost every obstacle the characters confront; the acquisition of knowledge motivates the characters to risk jobs, reputations, and lifelong relationships. Knowledge is power, but as Miss Blake reminds the Girton women, “The value of your lessons isn’t knowledge. It is the fact that you are learning to think.” I can’t imagine a better message for a play produced at a university.
