The Covenant Society Many alumni and friends of Belmont have chosen to support the University through planned gifts. Those who do so automatically become members of the Belmont University Covenant Society, which honors and thanks those alumni and friends who have made provisions for Belmont in their estate plans. Planned gifts come in many forms, including life income gifts whereby the donor transfers to Belmont an asset and retains an income for life; trusts that may permit donors to save on income, gift and estate taxes while providing for their families and Belmont; life insurance or retirement funds no longer needed; and, most importantly and simply, remembering Belmont in your will. We are forever grateful to all Covenant Society members for their continuing support of this great university and the students, faculty and staff who benefit from their generosity. To explore how you may include Belmont in your estate plans, please contact Belmont’s Director of Planned Giving Vicky Tarleton at (615) 460-6001.

Construction Kickoff for New Concert Hall In a special Construction Kickoff celebration, Belmont University welcomed the campus community and special guests for a tour of the renovations at the Belmont Heights Baptist Church sanctuary. The $7 million construction project provides the campus with a new, large concert venue suitable for acoustic performances. The McAfees, Carolyn, Tom and Julie, who have supported Belmont University for many years, provided the lead gift for this project. Carolyn McAfee has served on Belmont’s Board of Trustees since 2006, and her late husband Jim, president and CEO of Hallmark Systems, Inc., served on the Board from 2002 until his untimely death in 2004. In addition to their time on the Board, the McAfees also support Belmont through an endowed scholarship in their name for School of Music students with a major in organ or classical music. “My family and I are pleased to be able to support Belmont University and its School of Music in the development of a new concert hall,” said Carolyn McAfee. “We have attended many events at Belmont and know well the quality of music performance on this campus. These exceptional music performances deserve a venue that matches their level of excellence. We are excited to be a part of providing that outstanding performance space and believe it will enrich the lives of countless students in the future.” Early in the concert hall design process, the project acoustician and the architects discovered that the dimensions of the former sanctuary were identical to the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland. Capitalizing on the strengths of the Tonhalle, Belmont has created a new space similar to the unique room geometry and room width of the Tonhalle. Having a concert hall in Nashville that resembles one of the finest concert halls in Europe provides a premier learning opportunity for Belmont students to grow and develop their talents and will provide a one of a kind cultural experience for music lovers in the Middle Tennessee community.

Record-Breaking Fall Enrollment Fall 2011 enrollment reached a record-breaking number for the eleventh straight year: 6,374 students. That enrollment marks an increase of eight percent from the previous year and a rise of 114 percent since 2000 when the school enrolled 2,976 students. The Belmont student body consists of 1,370 graduate and professional students and 5,004 undergraduates, representing record figures in both categories. This is the first time the University enrolled more than 2,000 new undergraduate and graduate/professional students in the fall semester. The University’s record-breaking enrollment news is being met by the construction of several new buildings to help balance the ever-increasing demand for a Belmont education.

Dr. Maya Angelou speaks at Belmont University.

Dr. Maya Angelou Visits Campus Belmont University celebrated the 10th Annual Humanities Symposium with the theme “Liberating Voices” featuring keynote speaker and special guest Dr. Maya Angelou. Angelou is one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. Hailed as a global renaissance woman, Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. Angelou urged the Belmont and Nashville communities to “be rainbows and not just in one” by letting their gratitude precede them. “When it looked like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore, God put a rainbow in the clouds,” Angelou sang after acknowledging the sold out Curb Event Center’s welcoming applause with a bow. “I am so pleased to be at Belmont. I know that this University with its intent is a rainbow in the sky. I know that there are many young men and women who are students here who represent the first time anyone in their families has ever gone to an institution of higher education. That is a rainbow in the clouds. That means that there is a possibility of seeing light.” 2011-2012 Report on Philanthropy | 11

Doyle Rogers Distinguished Chair of Law In the charter class’ first year, the College of Law announced the establishment of the Doyle Rogers Distinguished Chair of Law, named in honor of an attorney whose career accomplishments are superseded only by his exemplary character. Doyle Rogers is a lawyer whose career reflects accomplishments to which all lawyers aspire. His dedication to the legal profession has been honorable, unwavering and exceptional. The Doyle Rogers Distinguished Chair of Law was established with the leadership, generosity and vision of Barbara Massey Rogers and the Jack C. Massy Foundation. It is a fitting tribute and a wonderful expression of dedication, support and love by Barbara and her family who have been some of Belmont’s most ardent benefactors. This newly endowed Chair was filled by former U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales. Judge Gonzales is the only former U.S. Attorney General teaching full-time in legal education. Belmont College of Law Founding Dean Jeff Kinsler said, “The insight and experience Alberto Gonzales acquired while serving as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, Counsel to the President, Justice on the Supreme Court of Texas and Texas Secretary of State is an immeasurable resources for our students and faculty. Since leaving public office, these qualities have helped Judge Gonzales develop into an outstanding professor. We are incredibly fortunate that he has joined our charter faculty, and we are extremely grateful for the support provided by Doyle and Barbara Rogers.”

Belmont Celebrates Topping Out Ceremony for New Residence Hall Belmont University celebrated the official topping out for Dickens Hall, named in honor of longtime Belmont Board of Trustees Chair Marty Dickens. The hall, which houses upperclassmen, offers unobstructed views of the Nashville skyline from its top floors. As part of Belmont’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, the new facility is incorporating a number of “green” features including a variable flow refrigerant HVAC system, a partially landscaped covered garage area in front of the building, motion sensors on residence room lighting and energy efficient lighting and appliances. The residence hall was built within the same footprint of a previously developed campus site. Marty Dickens retired from BellSouth/AT&T-Tennessee in 2007, after being employed by the company for 38 years. Naming this hall represents Belmont’s profound appreciation for Marty and his wife Betty.

Alumnus Brad Paisley Endows Scholarship for Curb College Students Belmont University alumnus and multi-Grammy, Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music award-winning artist Brad Paisley established an endowed scholarship at his alma mater. The Brad Paisley Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance for a deserving student with demonstrated need who is studying in the Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business.

Paisley said, “I’ve often said that the best course of education for a young person wanting to pursue country music is to go to college at Belmont. I speak from experience. I wouldn’t be in any position to offer a scholarship if I had not gone to Belmont — this is the least I can do in appreciation.”

President Bob Fisher shared, “I’ve heard Brad say that he ‘got his big break’ when he set foot on the campus of Belmont University, a place where he met fellow students who became members of what became ‘Team Paisley.’ Well, we’ve come full circle to realize that Belmont University and future students got our big break when Brad arrived on campus. We’re deeply grateful for his continued friendship and his commitment to making Belmont better than it was when he first found us.” In 2003, Paisley received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Belmont. A 1995 graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Paisley majored in music business at what was then the Mike Curb School of Music Business. During his Belmont career, Paisley himself benefited from a scholarship supported by Vince Gill and has long been committed to “paying it forward” to another deserving student.

Belmont honors these generous donors with an annual Magnolia Society reception.

Ramsey McFerrin Casteel Music Business Endowment The Ramsey McFerrin Casteel Music Business Endowment was established in memory of Ramsey McFerrin Casteel, who passed away February 3, 2011, following an 18 month battle with cancer. Ramsey was a 2003 cum laude graduate of the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business, and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Following graduation, Ramsey pursued his dedication for, and love of, the country music business in Nashville. Most recently he was associate manager with Mike Robertson Management. Working in Nashville in an office on Music Row was the fulfillment of diligent study, hard work, and a dream come true for Ramsey. To honor Ramsey’s memory and support his love of music business education, the Casteel family generously established this endowment at Belmont. The Ramsey McFerrin Casteel Music Business Endowment will be used for technology, equipment and special projects in music business, as well as to assist in funding lectures and visitations by respected individuals in the country music business. Students for generations to come will benefit from this thoughtful testimony of love.

Scholarship Donor Dinner Many generous individuals and organizations have established and sustained endowed scholarships at Belmont University. Those donors who establish and support Belmont’s scholarship program make a remarkable impact on a student’s life year after year. Whether a scholarship is merit-based or need-based, all scholarship recipients represent the finest caliber of students Belmont has to offer. As an expression of gratitude to donors who have made an endowed scholarship possible, Belmont has established an annual tradition of bringing scholarship donors and their scholarship recipients together for the Belmont Scholarship Donor Dinner. This very special evening allows donors to meet and interact with the very student they help, seeing firsthand the immediate and personal way their gift has changed a student’s life. The evening’s program typically includes a compelling student or alumni speaker who benefited from scholarship support, a musical performance, and a keynote speaker who has been instrumental in providing scholarship support. At the 2012 Belmont Scholarship Donor Dinner, guests heard from Belmont alumna Ginny Owens, a 1997 Music Education graduate who has gone on to become a three-time Dove Award winning artist, including the Gospel Music Association’s 2000 New Artist of the Year. She is also a multiple ASCAP Award winner and has sold nearly one million albums. Before her illustrious career in the music industry, Ginny was the recipient of the Robert Widney Keyt Scholarship at Belmont and she shared how receiving financial support to attend Belmont helped provide the foundation for her current success. Also at the 2012 dinner, Stan Duke, father of Tyler Garrett Duke, spoke about continuing his son’s legacy through the Tyler Duke Memorial Book Scholarship. Tyler was a pharmacy student who suddenly passed away in 2009. His life continues to touch so many students through his scholarship established in his memory by his loving family.

Harry Chapman interviews Melinda Doolittle during “Insider’s View.”

Supporters Establish Melinda Doolittle Endowed Scholarship Belmont alumna Melinda Doolittle, a commercial voice major who graduated in 1999, was interviewed by Director of Special Projects and Major Gifts Harry Chapman as part of the ongoing series, “Insider’s View.” Following her Belmont years, Doolittle launched her professional career as a backup singer and then experienced an incredibly successful run on the sixth season of TV juggernaut “American Idol,” where she ultimately placed in the top three. “I loved singing background and being the support system for artists,” Doolittle said of her time working with a long list of talent that included BeBe and CeCe Winans, Michael McDonald, Kirk Franklin, Alabama and Jonny Lang. “I got to sing with so many different artists, and it really stretched me.” In addition, Doolittle announced that her supporters, Melinda’s Backups, have been raising money for several years to establish a scholarship fund at her alma mater to continue the singer’s legacy of giving back. Commercial music majors in the College of Visual and Performing Arts will be eligible for the Melinda Doolittle Endowed Scholarship. The singer concluded her session in the Massey Performing Arts Center with a few words of wisdom for the students in attendance: “You never know when the door to opportunity is going to open for you. The catch is whether or not you’re prepared for it when it does… My motto is dream big, pray hard and be prepared, and I challenge everyone to do that.” 2011-2012 Report on Philanthropy | 27

Wedgewood Academic Building Groundbreaking In 2012, Belmont University broke ground on the campus’ largest building to date, an 188,000 squarefoot academic center situated on the corner of Wedgewood and 15th Avenues. The building will house most departments from the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the School of Religion, providing much-needed classroom and lab space for the growing University. The building will also include a new campus dining option and a 250 seat chapel. Slated to open in fall 2014 and anticipated to cost $76.5 million, the new building is being designed and built by locallyowned companies — Earl Swensson Associates and R.C. Mathews. A five-level underground parking garage will provide approximately 430 additional parking spaces, and the facility will connect on three floors to both the Inman Center and McWhorter Hall.

Faculty and Staff Campaign The 2011–2012 Faculty & Staff Campaign was a record-breaking year for participation. Fifty-one percent of Belmont’s faculty and staff members chose to make a gift to Belmont that supports areas that they are passionate about, including scholarships, athletics, specific departments or the annual fund. These gifts enable the University to fulfill its mission and communicate to outside funders that Belmont’s faculty and staff are committed to the University’s continued growth and success. The 2011-2012 Faculty & Staff Campaign was chaired by David Graham and Dr. Robert Lambert.

As Belmont looks to the future and honors the past, alumni will now have a place to reunite with former classmates and professors and reminisce about college days. In addition to housing several staff offices, the Alumni House will be the hub for alumni activity on the Belmont University campus and will be the perfect place for alumni to visit and meet. 2011-2012 Report on Philanthropy | 29

Belmont SIFE Team Wins National Championship… AGAIN! For the second time in three years, the Belmont University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team won the national championship at the SIFE USA National Exposition, held in Kansas City. SIFE Teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that focus on market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success skills, sustainability, and business ethics. President Bob Fisher said, “This is a really, really big deal. The work that our SIFE team does in the community and around the world fills me with pride as these students are using their talents and skills to make a positive difference for others. I am pleased, but certainly not surprised, that the work of these students and their faculty sponsors has earned this national prize.” This achievement placed Belmont as the No. 1 team out of nearly 600 teams nationwide and the best of the 156 teams who competed in the National Exposition. In October 2012, Belmont University’s Enactus Team (formerly called SIFE) went on to capture the Enactus World Cup 2012. This incredible accomplishment was a victory over an initial field of national champion university teams representing 38 countries.

SIFE students Rami Nogal and Eric Taft have been actively involved in developing the Spring Back business model.

Eric Taft – Good News Memorial Endowed Scholarship Recipient Growing up in Nashville, Eric Taft knew he was interested in entrepreneurship from an early age. At 14, he and a friend started a clowning business and performed in the area throughout high school. While he once thought of pursing this as a career, his eyes were opened to other suffering around the world and he began researching programs that would help him address this need. He learned about the Social Entrepreneurship Program at Belmont and found it was a perfect match for him. While at Belmont, Eric has studied global social entrepreneurship with a focus on economic development. He has also been very involved with Belmont’s Students in Free Enterprise Group (SIFE) and their award-winning Spring Back Mattress Recycling program. His experiences there have taught him how to run a successful business. In addition to merit scholarships, Eric also receives the Good News Memorial Endowed Scholarship, which was set up by several members of a Sunday school class at First Baptist Church, Nashville. Eric had the opportunity to meet some of the class members earlier this year and was impressed with the commitment that they all have to each other and to Belmont. Throughout the years, the Sunday school class’s gifts to memorialize their friends have supported countless students at Belmont. Eric hopes to continue pursing international social entrepreneurship by moving to Guatemala and working with rural community development centers after graduation.
