Four Shakespeare Quotes For Brass Quintet When invited by Dr. Jeffrey Phillips to compose a short piece for the Belmont University Brass Quintet, I happily accepted the offer. The idea of Shakespeare quotes followed soon after. These short pieces recall four memorable moments: 1. Measure for Measure, Act 3, Scene 1 finds the noble protagonist Claudio imprisoned and awaiting execution. His friend the Duke arrives in disguise to comfort and counsel him on the acceptance of death. What's yet in this that bears the name of life? Yet in this life lie hid more thousand deaths; Yet death we fear, that makes these odds all even. 2. The famous soliloquy in Merchant of Venice, Act IV, Scene 1 is delivered at trial by the disguised Portia, seeking to save the life of her husband's loyal friend. She reminds the court that true power derives its strength from the quality of mercy. Though justice be thy plea, consider this: That in the course of justice, none of us should see salvation. We do pray for mercy, and that same prayer doth teach s all to render the deeds of mercy. 3. Sonnet 116, one of the great love poems of the English language, is not addressed from one lover to another, but rather to both parties; insisting that loyalty and courage are the essence of love- 'an everfixed mark that looks on tempests is never shaken'. 4. Henry VI, Act 4, Scene 2 features the populist rebel Jack Cade rousing a mob, promising results that can never be delivered 'When I am king...There shall be no money; all shall eat and drink on my score,· and I will apparel them all in one livery, that they may agree like brothers and worship me their Lord'. At this point one of his enthusiastic followers exclaims what well may be the most quoted phrase ever written by the Bard: ' The first thing we do, Jet's kill all the lawyers!'
