Dear Friend: If I were to write a headline to depict the story of giving this past year at Belmont University, it would have to be something like… “Belmont University Blessed By Record Number of Donors in 2010-2011!”

Why are more people giving to Belmont than ever before? I think it is because individuals like you believe in our mission, see the excitement and energy of our students, witness the transformation of this campus and experience the positive impact Belmont has on the Nashville community. You want to be a part of the Belmont story and make a difference with your gift.

I am so grateful for that, and I also hope your gift brought you some of the joy that a recent donor experienced when she gave to Belmont. Mary Dale Woods, a long-time piano teacher, made a contribution that enabled Belmont to become an “All Steinway School” and created an endowment for music scholarships. In our last visit with her before her death, she said through her tears, “I now know the purpose of my life.”

This publication is just one way of recognizing you and other donors who are invested in the “Miracle of Belmont.”

Societies The Covenant Society and Planned Giving Opportunities at Belmont Many alumni and friends of Belmont have chosen to support the University through planned gifts. Those who do so automatically become members of the Belmont University Covenant Society, which honors and thanks those alumni and friends who have made provisions for Belmont in their estate plans.

Planned gifts come in many forms, including (1) life income gifts whereby the donor transfers to Belmont an asset and retains an income for life; (2) trusts that may permit donors to save on income, gift and estate taxes while providing for their families and Belmont; (3) life insurance or retirement funds no longer needed; and, (4) most importantly and simply, remembering Belmont in your will.

We are forever grateful to all Covenant Society members for their continuing support of this great university and the students, faculty and staff who benefit from their generosity.

Societies Magnolia Society The Magnolia Society consists of individuals whose annual contributions of $1,000 or more recognize the outstanding mission of Belmont. Gifts may be unrestricted or designated for need-based scholarships or a specific academic program. Collectively, gifts to the Annual Giving Campaign enhance all of Belmont’s academic and extracurricular programming and impacts daily the student experience. All Magnolia Society donors are highlighted in white on grey pages in the donor list.

Parent Leadership Council The Parent Leadership Council is a giving circle for parents and past parents comprised of those who make an annual contribution of $1,000 or more to the University. This gift may be an unrestricted or restricted gift to the University.

Those parents who give at this level are invited to special donor events in the fall and spring. The PLC allows parents to find a community at Belmont, gives parents opportunities to get to know members of senior leadership and allows parents occasions to better serve the University.

What is your favorite Belmont memory? Some of my favorite Belmont memories include being a TT (Towering Traditions) leader, cheering for the Men’s Soccer team, and watching the Men’s Basketball team receive their 1st bid to the NCAA tournament.

How has Belmont helped you or a family member in your life personally or professionally? Belmont has helped me personally by gaining many lifelong friendships, and knowing that whenever I meet someone new, we can connect over our times and memories made as Belmont Bruins. It has also helped me professionally by being a step above my peers and colleagues that went to other universities.

What things about Belmont make you the most proud? I am most proud of the growth that Belmont has made. Things are vastly different there now even compared to a few years ago when I started back in 2003. For example, the Psychology department was located in a small building next to the soccer field; now, they have a much nicer place to call home, with many more classrooms and lab space for students to complete their research.

What would you tell others as a reason that you give to Belmont? The reason I give to Belmont is to help all those students who want to become better versions of themselves. Going to college definitely helps students do that. I think it is important for students to take advantage of all the opportunities given to them.

Where do you hope to see Belmont for the future? I hope to see Belmont right where it always been in my eyes - at the top.

Belmont Friends, Athletics and E.S. Rose Park & Sports Complex Donors What is your favorite Belmont memory? For us, it is Rick Byrd and the Belmont men’s basketball team’s first trip to the NCAA, or watching our friend Vince Gill receive an honorary doctorate.

How has Belmont helped you or a family member in your life personally or professionally? Laurie’s brother Russell Brothers has his MBA from Belmont’s Massey School of Business, but mostly the people at Belmont are our friends.

What things about Belmont make you the most proud? We have enjoyed watching Belmont grow in size and reputation.

What would you tell others as a reason that you give to Belmont? We give to Belmont because we like where the school is going, especially in program offerings, and it still maintains the faith-based message.

Where do you hope to see Belmont for the future? We hope Belmont continues to grow and prosper.

My education and experience at Belmont opened so many doors of opportunity for me. Upon graduation, I felt confident in my ability to succeed professionally and personally.

What things about Belmont make you the most proud? Clearly, it’s all about the students that come to Belmont. Each opportunity that I have to meet a Belmont student I walk away so impressed with the caliber of the students we have at Belmont.

I am also proud of the outstanding job of our leadership.

What would you tell others as a reason that you give to Belmont? Well, I believe Belmont has exceeded most people’s expectations over recent years in so many areas. I give to Belmont to support the growth or the university so that students can come to Belmont and grow academically and socially in a supportive environment. The total student experience at Belmont is the top priority.

Where do you hope to see Belmont for the future? I believe Belmont will continue to grow, not only in terms of number of students and programs, but also in terms of academic excellence. Belmont thinks about its future without limitations. I am very excited about the next 10 years at Belmont.

Janis Reynolds Mitchell Endowed Scholarship Donor What is your favorite Belmont memory? I have so many it is hard to choose just one. Some of my favorite Belmont memories center around the many traditions that we celebrated, such as the May Day and Homecoming festivities. I also have such good memories of my relationships with the wonderful faculty that taught many of my courses, especially Dr. Virginia Chaney.

How has Belmont helped you or a family member in your life both personally and professionally? As a student at Belmont, being in a smaller atmosphere really allowed me to form solid relationships with my fellow students as well as the faculty and administration. Those connections have enabled me to remain involved with Belmont and, through them, I have gotten to know many of the current students, faculty and staff. I have been able to have a front row seat to see the evolution of Belmont – from a smaller regional school to the wonderful university that it has become.

What things about Belmont make you the most proud? I am in awe of the campus and the facilities that are now a part of Belmont. I am also so impressed with the innovative faculty and students and the programs they are developing. I am so proud of my connection with Belmont and find that my experience means even more now that Belmont is on a national stage.

What would you tell others as a reason that you give to Belmont? I realize that Belmont gave me so much and I want to give back. As a student, I received help through scholarships and loans and decided to establish a scholarship at Belmont that would make a Belmont education available to more students.

I believe in giving to what you love. If you have the means, why not give to something that you believe in and that is important to you?

What do you hope for Belmont in the future? I am so excited about the current and future growth that Belmont is experiencing. It keeps getting better and better!

E.S. Rose Park and Sports Complex Cost: $9,000,000 With the E.S. Rose Park and Sports Complex, Belmont is leading the way in university/community partnerships, creating a unique national model and providing a win-win scenario for all involved. Belmont has collaborated with Nashville’s Metro Board of Parks and Recreation to provide $9 million worth of enhancements to nearby E.S. Rose Park and scholarships to the Edgehill community.

For the first time in Belmont’s history, all NCAA Division I outdoor sports programs – baseball, softball, soccer and track – have their own home playing fields. Edgehill neighborhood children and families are enjoying the full benefit of significant park improvements. Belmont students, faculty and staff are already engaged and committed to surrounding neighborhoods, from tutoring elementary students and holding health fairs to coordinating writing projects and hosting sports clinics.

The Rose Park initiative provides a great opportunity for the university to make major improvements in Belmont athletics and in relationships with our Edgehill neighbors.

College of Law in the Randall and Sadie Baskin Center Cost: $28,000,000 | Maintenance Endowment: $2,800,000 On October 7, 2009, Belmont University announced the launch of a College of Law, the first new law school in Middle Tennessee in over a century. The College began classes in fall 2011, and when at full capacity, it will enroll approximately 350 students. Belmont determined that Tennessee has far fewer attorneys per capita and per dollar of gross domestic product than neighboring states. In addition, Tennessee has a shortage of seats for first-year law students forcing applicants to apply to out of state programs.

Belmont’s College of Law intends to provide an innovative curriculum designed to prepare practice-ready attorneys and community leaders. Traditional legal education lacks attention to actual practice and displays inadequate concern for ethics and professionalism. Belmont will provide an academically challenging study of traditional legal analysis and link it to the modern practice of law, all within a solid ethical grounding. The College of Law will instill professionalism, ethics and honor in all its students.

Thanks to a leadership gift from Trustee Randall Baskin and his wife, Sadie, the College of Law will be housed in a beautiful new 75,000 square foot building named the Randall and Sadie Baskin Center. This building will include a state-of-the-art law library, mock trial courtroom and underground parking. Adding to the uniqueness of the Belmont program, entertainment/music business and health care concentrations will be offered, complementing Belmont’s present curricular strengths and vital fields to the Nashville area.

Opportunities for Capital and Endowed Giving Bell Tower Renovation Cost: $400,000 | Maintenance Endowment: $100,000 Located in the heart of campus, the Belmont Bell Tower is a central image for defining the University, a gathering place for key events and a representation of both Belmont’s history and future. The Bell Tower was built in the late 1850s following the 1853 construction of the Belmont Mansion, a summer residence for Joseph A.S. Acklen and his wife Adelicia Hayes Franklin.

The Belmont Community, including a large number of alumni, donated more than $400,000 this past year to fortify the structure of the Bell Tower. The threat to this important 150-year-old landmark comes from the effects of age and weather. In addition to the restoration, there is a critical need to build an endowment fund that will provide for future maintenance and overhead needs.

McWhorter Hall Cost: $30,000,000 | Maintenance Endowment: $3,000,000 In April 2007, Belmont announced it would open a School of Pharmacy, extending its reach in the allied health sciences.

The following fall the first class of 75 pharmacy students began at Belmont, entering a program with a unique and innovative curriculum to prepare them for the changing world of health care. Four concentrations of study – information management, missions, patient care and management – run parallel with the required core curriculum, enabling students to succeed in whatever pharmacy environment they encounter upon graduation. Additionally, the Pharmacy program was developed with an entrepreneurial mindset.

McWhorter Hall, named in honor of Clayton McWhorter and his brother, Fred, is a 90,000-square-foot facility that emphasizes integrated, “hands on” experiential learning components including a licensed, state-of-the-art campus pharmacy. This pharmacy and adjacent health clinic provide services to students, faculty and staff while also serving as a training site for student pharmacists and other student health care professionals. In addition, McWhorter Hall includes top-notch simulation labs, where students and community clinicians can practice skills either on actors who simulate patients or on high tech manikins.

Located next to the Inman Health Sciences Center, McWhorter Hall also houses the School of Physical Therapy and the Department of Psychological Sciences as well as provides expansion space for current healthcare programs. Pharmacy and Health Sciences have a strategic plan that focuses on creating an ideal environment for learning, providing innovative instruction, developing exceptional practitioners and serving others. Investing in these programs and this new building is making a step toward each of those primary goals.

Concert Hall Cost: $7,000,000 | Maintenance Endowment: $700,000 Belmont University’s School of Music has earned national recognition for the quality of its programs and the breadth of its vision. Not only does the school provide a superior music education, but it also offers a high performance standard across a broad range of musical styles.

At the present time the Massey Performing Arts Center (MPAC) is the only large traditional-style concert venue available to the School of Music and the campus. Dramatic growth in enrollment and the addition of new programs and ensembles have pushed MPAC to its maximum capacity with more than 150 public concerts a year held in that venue. The facility is also used for many university-wide events, including convocation lectures and award ceremonies. While MPAC is an outstanding performance space for Belmont’s commercial music program, it is not an ideal space for classical concerts.

Since Belmont University’s purchase of Belmont Heights Baptist Church in 2003, the large sanctuary has provided some relief to the overcrowding of MPAC’s schedule. However, numerous sound deficiencies require a substantial renovation, and the staging and seating need to be reconfigured to accommodate orchestra, wind and choral ensembles.

Thanks to a leadership gift by Belmont Trustee, Carolyn McAfee and her son, Tom, a new Concert Hall space will enable Belmont’s College of Visual and Performing Arts to continue to produce the performers and leaders who will help sustain the city’s rich artistic history and the cultural life of the city, region and state.

The cultural life of the campus will be greatly enhanced by the addition of the new Concert Hall, both in terms of quality and quantity of performance events. Campus audiences will be initially struck by the visual beauty of the renovated structure and its capacity to seat large numbers of instrumental and choral performers in the “mass” concerts so characteristic of Belmont’s School of Music. Most of all, campus audiences will hear a difference in the sound itself, sound that relies on only the enhancement of natural acoustics. It is anticipated that campus attendance at concerts will be at an all time high because the space itself will become one of the star attractions.

Endowment Giving When you create an endowment, you build a permanent resource that makes a difference now and for generations to come. It can be the most philanthropic decision of a lifetime. An endowment at Belmont University can be established to support ongoing operating expenses or for designated purposes such as financial assistance to deserving students, support of academic programs or professorships, missions programs or ongoing support for a wide variety of other programs and activities. All endowed funds have one objective: to support initiatives not for just one year, or even one generation, but in perpetuity.

A $1,000,000 unrestricted gift to the endowment can provide as much as $40,000 a year in income – which can support outstanding people (teachers, coaches and staff), outstanding programs (missions, service learning, scholarships, student life, athletics) or an outstanding sense of place (maintenance of state-of-the-art facilities).

A donor may designate an endowed fund in his own name, as a tribute to a friend or loved one, or to honor a professor or mentor. An endowed fund can be established with cash, securities, real estate or through a bequest.
