WELCOME TO BELMONT! AT BELMONT, IT ALL STARTS WITH TT We believe that your time here can be life-shaping in numerous ways. In order to start you off on the right track, we are kicking off your Belmont career with Welcome Week! Welcome Week is part of our Towering Traditions (TT) Orientation Program. TT is designed to connect you to our community, prepare you for all facets of life at Belmont and help you feel at ease as you enter into this next chapter of your life. Not to mention, TT is full of unforgettable experiences! We hope that you dig deep during these next four days. Show up and bring your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. Ask questions. Meet people. Be yourself. Reflect often. Soak in the memories. This is your college journey, and we hope you fully lean into this experience. We want you to succeed, and we cannot wait for you to experience all that Belmont has to offer. Study this booklet for more details on Welcome Week, and enjoy the journey. 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. | Maddox Grand Atrium

President & Board of Trustees’ Picnic | parents welcome 4:45–6 p.m. | The Lawn Enjoy complimentary dinner with your fellow classmates and their families. The Belmont community will be bustling with the excitement of live music and great food! In case of inclement weather, event will be located in the Curb Event Center. Main Session 1: Welcome to Belmont | parents welcome 6:15–7:15 p.m. | Curb Event Center Join the Orientation Council, President Fisher, Dr. John Delony and Tower Team Leaders as you learn about the amazing journey you are about to begin. Tower Jam

7:30–8 p.m. | Curb Event Center This high energy kick-off is just for you.

Tower Jam Part II : Meet Your TT Group

8–9:15 p.m. | Curb Event Center At this time, students will meet their TT Group. Each TT Group consists of 10–20 new students and is led by a Tower Team Leader (an upperclassman). Jump in on the fun and get connected to your Bruin community!

Catholic Mass

9:30–10:30 p.m. | Janet Ayers Academic Center University Chapel Catholic Mass will be held in the University Chapel and is open to anyone wishing to participate.

8–9 a.m. | Maddox Grand Atrium Coffee will be available to jump start your morning.

Worship Service | parents welcome

8:45–9:30 a.m. | Curb Event Center Begin your Sunday Towering Traditions experience with a time of worship and celebration! This meaningful time of song, prayer, scripture reading and short meditation from our University Minister sets the tone for the academic year. All are welcome for this time of reflection and celebration.

Matriculation Ceremony | parents welcome 9:45–10:30 a.m. | Curb Event Center Each year, Belmont University welcomes its new students with a Matriculation Ceremony to signify their acceptance into the school’s academic program. Students recite the Community Commitment and Academic Integrity pledges—which are commitments to themselves, to their peers and to the University. Parent Dismissal

10:30–11 a.m. At this time, we start our student-only portion of Welcome Week. Parents, we ask for you to plan travel accordingly to leave campus by 11 a.m., allowing your student to fully participate in Welcome Week.

Meet With Your TT Group

11–11:15 a.m. | Main Lawn Once you’ve said goodbye to your parents and family members, reconnect with your TT Group on the Main Lawn. Rain Location: Curb Event Center

The Big Game

12:45–2 p.m. | With your TT Group A little competition never hurt anyone. This afternoon, your 2019 Orientation Council will lead you through various games and activities with your fellow Bruins. Join your TT group at 12:45 p.m. for the Big Game kick-off.

Main Session 2: A Community of Stories | convo credit 2–4 p.m. | Curb Event Center It is time for our first student-only main session! To kick things off, join us as Dr. Syb, University Ministries, Dr. Mary Clark and the Orientation Council explore the power of stories. Church Fair

4–5:30 p.m. | South Lawn, outside of the Curb Event Center Now is the time to get plugged in to a local church! University Ministries has invited more than 50 different local churches (representing various Christian denominations) to campus to give you a chance to meet church leaders, talk with Belmont students involved at each church and begin the process of finding a new church home.

Dinner

4:30–6:30 p.m. | Harrington Place Dining You’ll eat with your Tower Team Group during dinner, have the opportunity to visit the Church Fair and have a little down time before evening activities.

Main Session 3: Storytelling | convo credit 7–9 p.m. | Curb Event Center Stories have power: stories connect us, stories shape us and stories inspire us. As you enter the Belmont community, you are bringing your story into the Belmont story. And now, your story is colliding with other people’s stories. We believe this collision of stories is beautifully packed with possibility. In this session, we will explore past stories colliding with present stories shaping our future stories.

ResHall Hangout hosted by your Spiritual Life Assistants 9–10 p.m. | Locations Listed Below This gathering gives you a chance to meet other students within surrounding resident halls, as well as your Spiritual Life Assistants while enjoying refreshing treats! Spiritual Life Assistants (SLAs), seek to help freshmen find community within their residence halls and navigate spiritual life at Belmont. Meeting spaces are listed below: Maddox Courtyard: Kennedy, Maddox, Wright, Thrailkill and other upperclassman halls McWhorter Patio: Patton and Potter North Lawn: Heron, Pembroke, Hail

MONDAY, AUGUST 19 Music Placement Assessments

8–10 a.m. | Wilson Music Building 121 Music Placement Assessments are for Music Majors only. If you have auditioned and been accepted to the School of Music and declared music as your major, you must arrive promptly to take the music assessment. The results of the assessments provide information related to the planning of your academic schedule. These placements are for both August orientation students as well as student re-takes from June orientation sessions.

August Course Registration

8:45–10:45 a.m. | Beaman A&B If you have not yet registered for courses, you will need to attend this course registration opportunity. By the end of this two-hour session, you will have your Fall Semester course schedule ready to go. Make sure to know your MyBelmont login information for this session.

8:45–9:45 a.m. | Various Locations Each morning, we are giving you the opportunity to meet your peers who share similar interests. Head to your assigned morning rooms with your TT Leader and jump in on the fun!

Main Session 4: A Community of Learning | convo credit 10–10:45 a.m. | Curb Event Center College is all about learning and at Belmont, we are down with learning. Join us as we explore academic life at Belmont. Meet with Your Academic College

10:45 a.m.–1 p.m. | Various Locations Academic life often happens within your academic college. This session gives you a chance to meet the professors and other new students in your college. Lunch will also take place with your academic college during this session.

Classroom Tours with TT Group

1–1:45 p.m. | Meet your TT groups on the Main Lawn Finding your way to classes on day one can be challenging. Bring your class schedule and get the ins and outs on how to navigate your first day of classes.

Main Session 5: A Community of Care | convo credit 2–4:15 p.m. | Curb Event Center Here at Belmont, we believe caring is cool. At this main session, hear more about Belmont’s commitment to each other, our commitment to our core community values and the implications these commitments have for our day-to-day life together. Organize Your Room

4:15–5 p.m. | Your Residence Hall Sometimes, you just need space to organize your room and settle in to life in your new home. Head to your residence hall and meet your neighbors as you finish setting up your room.

Motion Pictures Safety Seminar & Safety Test mandatory for all MOT majors 4:30–9 p.m. (dinner break included) | Johnson Center 115 Belmont takes safety seriously. This will be a “How to Safely Run a Shoot” demo followed by the Safety Test. Every MOT student must participate and pass the test to be able to work on any sets in the fall.

Main Session 6: Bruin Blitz | convo credit 7:15–9 p.m. | Curb Event Center The biggest, craziest, loudest and most spirited Belmont Bruins fans go to Bruin Blitz. Athletic events bring campus together, so prepare to meet our student athletes, learn the cheers and gear-up with free Bruin swag so you can be ready for game day. You will also learn about other involvement opportunities in this key Welcome Week event. Beaman Breakdown

9–10:30 p.m. | Beaman Student Life Center & Curb Café It’s time for Beaman Breakdown! Connect with the 1,900+ other new Belmont Bruins in this must-attend event. Dancing, karaoke, FitRec opportunities and good times await you.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 20 Welcome Week Teams + Morning Meet-Ups

Dance Placement Auditions

9–11:30 a.m. | Black Box Theater Auditions for placement into upper level dance classes. Open to all students interested. Dance faculty will teach the audition class in ballet, modern, jazz and tap; students should wear appropriate attire/shoes for each style. Questions may be addressed to Debbie Belue at debbie.belue@belmont.edu.

Main Session 7: Your Community | convo credit 10–11:15 a.m. | Curb Event Center For our final main session, hear from members of the Belmont and Nashville community as we discuss what it means to be a citizen of Belmont and Nashville as we prepare for our afternoon SERVE experience. 8 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY


Student Employment Fair

11:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m. | Maddox Grand Atrium If you are interested in an on-campus job or working with an organization in the Nashville community, you will want to take advantage of our employment fair. You must bring a copy of your Fall Semester schedule and come prepared to interview with several different representatives. You must have your original social security card, birth certificate, or passport if you plan to work. No photo copies allowed.

11:15–12:30 p.m. | Harrington Place Dining Make sure to fuel up before heading out to SERVE!

12:30–12:45 p.m. | Various Locations It is time for SERVE! Find your TT Group and load your specific bus to head to your SERVE site. *Make sure to wear your SERVE t-shirt and sport clothes you don’t mind getting dirty/paint on, rock your tennis shoes and be hydrated!

SERVE | convo credit 1–4:30 p.m. | Various Nashville Locations Belmont strives to be Nashville’s University, and we demonstrate that through our commitment to serving our city. During this time, you will have an opportunity to visit with and serve a local organization with your Tower Team Family. TT Family Dinner

4:30–7 p.m. | Main Lawn Meet your TT group and enjoy a dinner together sharing favorite Welcome Week moments.

7:30–9 p.m. | Your Residence Hall Each residence hall has a mandatory floor meeting before the start of the academic semester. Ask your Resident Assistant for more information.

Life Under the Tower

9–10 p.m. | Curb Event Center Every year, the night before the first day of classes, new students gather to participate in this symbolic event. You won’t want to miss this last official event of Welcome Week.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21 Opening Convocation Program | convo credit 10–11 a.m. | Curb Event Center Dr. Bob Fisher, University President, will give the opening year address to the Belmont community. (One Convocation Credit received—Belmont ID required for credit.)

THURSDAY, AUGUST 29 BruinLink Fair

4–5:30 p.m. | The South Lawn to McWhorter Patio The annual BruinLink Fair is an opportunity to learn more about our student organizations, University Ministries, Greek Life, campus departments and more. Come join us to discover more about the Belmont community and ways to get involved!
