2021

Welcome! We are honored and excited to have you on campus for our Summer Orientation Program! The Towering Traditions Orientation Program is designed to help you navigate the transition into the Belmont community. Towering Traditions is about the legacy and the life of Belmont University. Tradition reminds us that being a Belmont Bruin is bigger than any of us. It starts with the thousands of Belmont students who have gone before you—students who dared to dream bigger, who committed to serve faithfully and who understood the privilege, honor and responsibility of living life under the Tower. As representatives of the Towering Traditions (TT) orientation program, we carry on this legacy. But it is not just about the past; it’s also about the present. Life Under the Tower is about service, creativity and exploration. It is about bringing your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. It is about giving back and making the world a better place. It is about you discovering and developing your gifts in order to better serve the world around you. It is about you investing in your education to step more fully into the person God has created you to be. Life Under the Tower is about a community of learners, explorers and encouragers. Life Under the Tower is layered with curious scholars, inspiring creatives, soon-to-be nurses, teachers, lawyers and innovative entrepreneurs. Life Under the Tower is the life you are entering. Towering Traditions is the beautiful combination of Belmont past and present. It helps us appreciate the rich legacy of our past while we’re living out our present and preparing for our future. We know such a transition can be filled with emotions and excitement for what the next chapter holds. As veterans of the Belmont community, we could not be more excited for the journey that is before you. We have witnessed the beauty of life at Belmont, and we can't wait for you to join the Bruin community!

Welcome to Belmont! Ryan Holt Director, New Student Orientation Programs

MEET THE ORIENTATION COUNCIL EASTON KERR | Senior, Songwriting | Murphy, TX As the only songwriter I knew in Murphy, Texas, I never quite found my musical niche while I was in high school. I heard about Belmont’s flourishing community of writers and artists from my cousin after she graduated from Belmont, and I knew I had to visit. When I finally toured campus and got to meet one-on-one with the head of the Songwriting program, I knew that this was a family I wanted to join. As I had hoped, Belmont is full of people who are creative and passionate for life, and I can’t wait to welcome you home here! KAELA BUGGY | Senior, Social Entrepreneurship, Faith and Social Justice | Darien, CT During my college search, I knew I wanted to find a school where service was central to the campus culture. I was struck when visiting Belmont by the joy that students and faculty showed when talking about all kinds of opportunities to serve during their time here. Memories like this are such testaments to the passion people had for Belmont and the ways that this community allows them to live out their calling. I came to Belmont because of the joy I saw in these people. I have been blessed to feel it myself, and I am so excited for you to experience it too. Welcome to Belmont! GABE ALLEN | Senior, Motion Pictures | Ruston, LA At the time, my Belmont journey felt like an accident. All I knew was that I wanted to move out of my small, rural town in Louisiana before a friend introduced me to Belmont. I fell in love with the campus, and I enrolled as a Music Business student, but eventually decided to make a change. The Motion Pictures program piqued my interest enough to switch majors, but the uncertainty about my future persisted until I came in the fall and knew I had a home here. Motion Pictures is everything I never knew I wanted to do, and the community here has been so welcoming. I did not wind up here by mistake, and neither did you! KIRI GILBREATH | Senior, Economics, Marketing | Huntsville, AL I grew up moving all around the country, so I knew that I wanted to find a college in a new, exciting city. As soon as I visited Nashville and toured campus, I knew this was the place for me. Since becoming a Belmont student, my professors have challenged me, mentored me, and ultimately helped me discover my strengths and my passions. I have found incredible leaders, role models and friends within different organizations on campus, and I am so lucky to have spent the last three years growing and learning alongside them. I hope your Belmont journey is filled with love and joy! JACK TUCKER | Senior, Communication Studies | Chattanooga, TN After growing up in a small community, I was ready for a change of pace. My sister made the move to Nashville before recommending that I visit Belmont, and I couldn’t wait to start here as soon as I did. That’s not to say that coming to college wasn’t a big transition; it takes time to get used to anywhere new. However, Belmont’s amazing orientation program showed me that there was a place for me here. I got involved with Reformed University Fellowship, my dorm community and the live music scene in ways that made Nashville feel like home. I’m excited for you to find places that make you feel at home here, too! 2 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY

LIZZY DAVIS | Senior, Worship Leadership | Nacogdoches, TX In high school, my sports teams, church community, and honors society were like family to me, and saying goodbye to them was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. However, Belmont’s diversity and sense of community were apparent to me right away. I quickly found new families in Greek Life, University Ministries, Towering Traditions and in my residence hall. Today, Belmont feels as much like home to me as Nacogdoches did in high school, and I can’t wait for you to find your new families here as well! NICK BRAZELTON | Senior, Music Business | Huntsville, AL As a transfer student, I had a lot of feelings and expectations about my Belmont experience. I was anxious about meeting new people and getting involved, but I was surprised to be welcomed into this community so immediately. The Music Business program that drew me to Belmont has been everything that I hoped it might be. The communities and friendships I have found at Belmont are truly unmatched. My time here has prepared me so well for success in both my career and my personal life no matter where I may go. Like our slogan says, Belmont has truly prepared me to go “from here to anywhere”! EMMA JOHANSSON | Senior, Communication Studies | Madison, WI My Belmont story has been a whirlwind! I never planned to move south before enrolling, and I stayed undeclared for my first year and a half to try out all kinds of potential majors. Through all of this, I learned the importance of being patient and of leaving my comfort zone. Belmont has been an incredible place for me to try new things, to grow and to discover what I’m passionate about through Towering Traditions, Delight Ministries and our Speech and Debate team. We take our slogan “From Here to Anywhere” seriously, and I can’t wait for you to start that journey too! TREY STONE | Senior, Biophysics | Gadsden, AL I grew up in Nashville before moving away, but I always knew I would make my way back. Deciding to come to Belmont was exciting, but it wasn't until I was here that I knew I was really home! Getting to live and learn in a community of peers and professors from all walks of life has been so impactful. It has been so encouraging to have so many people come alongside me to help shape my future. The relationships and moments I have found here have been like no others, and I would encourage you all to lean into all the moments and relationships that you can! MOLLY DEAKINS | Senior, Sociology | Knoxville, TN After growing up just a few hours east of Music City, I knew that Nashville would be the perfect home for me from the first time I stepped foot on campus. Between being a tour guide, the co-chair of the Presidential Debate Student Engagement Committee and my time in Greek Life, Belmont has given me so many opportunities to grow as a student, as a friend and as a leader. I cannot wait for you to see how your time at Belmont will transform your story. Welcome home!

7 TIPS AND TRICKS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS 1. Connect with your Academic Advisor

Make it a priority to connect with your academic advisor in the fall semester about course selection, transfer credits, and planning your academic path at Belmont.

2. Attend and engage with TT during Welcome Week

During Welcome Week, you’ll be in Transfer student groups. This is a great way to get acquainted with new students, returning Belmont students, and the campus in general! Orientation and Welcome Week are for all new students—that means you!

3. Get Involved

Make an effort to get involved in the first month on campus by attending Throwback Prom, the BruinLink Involvement Fair, joining a Faith Development Group, or considering joining a Fraternity or Sorority. Fall recruitment is only open to second-year students and older!

4. Plan for future experiences

In the fall, the Study Abroad Fair can help you consider experiential learning opportunities, or you can prepare for an internship with the annual Career Fair.

5. Make connections with faculty

Here at Belmont, faculty want to get to know and support you! Consider attending office hours or finding time to chat one-on-one with your professors—even if you don’t need extra support in the class!

6. Get to know your future roommates asap

Don’t wait until move in to connect with your roommates. Find time to chat and get to know one another over the summer, and you’ll arrive on campus in August already with a new connection!

7. Spend time on campus

The surest way to feel like a Bruin is to spend time on campus. Grab lunch in the Curb Café, study at Club Lila, or get some sunshine on the Lawn. The more time you spend on campus, the more likely you are to get to know other students, find out about upcoming events, and feel like part of the community!

DON’T BELIEVE US? Hear it straight from our Summer Staff that transferred to Belmont! “As a fellow transfer student, my biggest piece of advice is to get involved on campus! Belmont has so many amazing clubs and organizations that will bring you best friends and memories that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.” —Nick Brazelton | Music Business

“Belmont has a solid range of activities and social organizations to be a part of that are just waiting for you to come join in on. If I had not just simply shown up to certain things, then I would have missed out on a lot of wonderful community that has shaped me. So, my advice is to take that brave first step and just show up. You get out of things what you put into them!”—Carter Buescher | Corporate Communications

“Push yourself to become more comfortable with being uncomfortable. As much of a cliché as it may seem, putting myself out there to meet people and get involved is the biggest thing that I am grateful for having done as a transfer student. It was my leaning into those new, awkward, initially uncomfortable moments that led to me finding the communities and spaces where I feel the most loved and celebrated and welcomed than I ever have in my life.”—Andrew Estrada | Music Business
