Speech & Debate Team
SPEECH & DEBATE TEAM
INTRODUCTION The Belmont Speech & Debate team has won countless awards at the local, state and national levels. Team members are frequently recognized as top students in their courses by professors. The team travels across the country, providing excellent opportunities for building résumés and gaining acceptance to graduate programs. Team alumni frequently attribute their experience on the Speech & Debate team as one of their most beneficial collegiate experiences.
SPEECH & DEBATE AT BELMONT PUBLIC SPEAKING: In the work force, people constantly compete with sales presentations and project meetings. It is only natural that this competition should also exist in the collegiate world. Students can compete in informative, persuasive, extemporaneous, impromptu and rhetorical criticism speeches to perfect their skills now to achieve both current and future success.
DEBATE: Academic debate is one of the best collegiate activities that any student can pursue. Competitors use information gained throughout their scholastic careers and match their knowledge, argumentation skills and wits against students from universities across the country. Belmont students compete in parliamentary as well as LincolnDouglas debates, and handle issues on both a domestic and international level. ACTING/ INTERPRETATION: Shakespeare wrote that “All the World’s A Stage.” With Speech & Debate, we could not agree more. Students competing with the team will forego costumes and sets for competitive monologues using scripts from poetry, prose and plays. Acting/Interpretation competitors will gain a significant benefit — attaining individual critiques from coaches and judges from across the country based solely on their performance, an invaluable experience to any growing performer.
