How to Recycle in Residence

East Campus Village and Graduate Residence Please help us reach our goal of keeping 50 per cent of UAlberta’s waste out of the landfill by 2015.

What can I recycle and compost? In ECV and Graduate Residence, you can recycle beverage containers, paper and cardboard, glass and light metals and plastics and you can compost organics.

How can I recycle and compost correctly? The key to success is sorting—separating the recyclables out from your waste and placing items in the right bins:

Beverage containers You have two options: 1) Bring them to a local Bottle Depot where you can collect a refund. 2) Rinse them, remove any lids or caps and add them to your other recyclables.

All other recyclables Collect all other recyclables in your apartment. Empty and rinse the containers. Bring all recyclables outdoors to nearest recycling hut and place them into the large blue recycling bin.

Organics

Collect organics in your apartment using a plastic bag or a reusable container and bring outdoors to the nearest recycling hut. Place directly into the smaller green organics bin.

Waste Put the rest of your waste in a bag and bring it outdoors to the nearest recycling hut. Place directly into the larger green waste bins.

Where are the bins located? Recycling huts are located outdoors in the alley/parking areas between Graduate Residence buildings and behind the ECV walk-ups. Huts include blue recycling bins, green landfill bins and smaller, green organics bins. Help keep this area clean and user-friendly. Please don’t leave items on the ground and always sort your items into the proper bin. 89 Ave

What do I need? It’s simple! You are provided with three small containers, one for recyclables, one for waste and one for organics. You’ll need some plastic grocery or garbage bags.

Where do the contents go after I put them in the bins? Recyclables are picked up by a contracted hauler and brought to a materials recovery facility where they are further sorted for recycling. Organics and waste are collected by a contracted hauler. Organics are brought to a local composting facility and waste is brought to the landfill.
