How to Recycle in Residence

International House

Please help us reach our goal of keeping 50 per cent of UAlberta’s waste out of the landfill by 2015.

What can I recycle and compost? In I-House, you can recycle beverage containers, paper, cardboard, glass, light metals, plastics and you can compost organics.

How can I recycle and compost correctly? The key to success is sorting—separating the recyclables out from your waste and placing items in the right bins:

Beverage containers Bring your beverage containers to the beverage container recycling bins in the common areas. When these bins are full, you and your fellow I-House residents are responsible for bringing the recyclable beverage containers to a local Bottle Depot where you can collect a refund. Arrange to split the profits amongst all those who participated.

All other recyclables Collect all other recyclables in your room. Empty and rinse the containers. Bring all recyclables outdoors behind I-House and place them into the large blue recycling bin.

Organics Collect organics in your room using a plastic bag or a reusable container and bring outdoors to the bins behind Tamarack. Place directly into the smaller green organics bin.

Waste Put the rest of your waste in a bag and bring it outdoors to the bins behind I-House. Place directly into the green landfill bin.

Where are the bins located? Bins are located outdoors in the alley/parking area behind I-House. There is a blue recycling bin and a green landfill bin. Beverage container recycling bins are located in your common areas. 89 Ave

What do I need? It’s simple! All you need are three small containers, one for recyclables, one for waste and one for organics. You’ll also need some plastic grocery or garbage bags.

Where do the contents go after I put them in the bins? Recyclables are picked up by a contracted hauler and brought to a materials recovery facility where they are further sorted for recycling. Organics and waste are collected by a contracted hauler. Organics are brought to a local composting facility and waste is brought to the landfill.
