How to Recycle in Residence
Résidence Saint-Jean
Please help us reach our goal of keeping 50 per cent of UAlberta’s waste out of the landfill by 2015.
What can I recycle and compost? In Résidence Saint-Jean, you can recycle beverage containers, paper and cardboard, glass and light metals and plastics and you can compost organics.
How can I recycle and compost correctly? The key to success is sorting—separating the recyclables out from your waste and placing items in the right bins:
Beverage containers You have two options: 1) Bring them to the beverage container recycling bins in your common area. 2) Bring them to a local Bottle Depot where you can collect a refund.
All other recyclables Collect all other recyclables in your room. Empty and rinse the containers. Bring them to the loading dock and place them into the large blue recycling bin.
Organics There are two brown organics pails provided for you in each kitchen. Organics can go right into the pail, just make sure to follow the emptying schedule posted in the kitchens and wash the bins out regularly.
Waste Put the rest of your waste in a bag and bring it to the loading dock. Place directly into the larger green waste bins.
Where are the bins located? Blue recycling bins and green landfill bins are located in the loading dock. Beverage container recycling bins are located in the common areas of Résidence Saint-Jean as well as across Campus Saint-Jean. The wooden bin for composting organics is located outdoors, next to the community garden.
What do I need? It’s simple! All you need is a small container for recyclables and some garbage bags. Your kitchen is supplied with a brown pail for organics and a landfill bin.
Where do the contents go after I put them in the bins? Recyclables are picked up by a contracted hauler and brought to a materials recovery facility where they are further sorted for recycling. Organics are mixed together with soil in the plywood bin to compost. When ready, it is used in the community garden to add nutrients to the soil. Waste is collected by a contracted hauler and brought to a landfill.
