Welcome to Sustainability Awareness Week 2014 On behalf of the President of the University of Alberta, we welcome you to the 7th annual Sustainability Awareness Week (SAW). This event is brought to you by the Office of Sustainability in collaboration with dozens of partner organizations and profiles many activities that are part of our multi-campus sustainability initiative. SAW provides students, faculty, alumni, community groups, and campus organizations valuable opportunities to interact, networks and exchange ideas through dozens of seminars, tours, lectures and workshops addressing sustainability. SAW is part of the University of Alberta’s continuous efforts to instill sustainability into the fabric of university life. On the first day of SAW, we will celebrate our achievements under the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System. STARS was developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education to recognize sustainability performance in colleges and universities across North America We have many accomplishments to celebrate. Students in nine faculties now have the opportunity to engage more deeply with sustainability with the Certificate in Sustainability. The university has committed to addressing climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. Thousands have benefited from changes in offices and campus events through the Green Spaces Certification Program. The university has expanded support for social sustainability through advancements in counselling & clinical services. Continuing our successful leadership in sustainability depends on the active contribution of every member of the campus community. As we look to 2020, this year you will also be invited to participate in a variety of activities to inform and update our campus sustainability plan. Two of the most important things we can do to advance sustainability performance include improving our knowledge and sharing ideas. Sustainability Awareness Week provides you with the opportunity to do both. Please take time out of your schedule to join us. With a wide diversity of events, there’s sure to be more than one to capture your interest. Enjoy SAW and thank you for working together to build a sustainable future.

Dr. Roger Epp Vice-Provost (Academic)

Don Hickey Vice-President (Facilities and Operations)
