Welcome to our what’s on brochure, giving you details of all the shows, events and opportunities we have on offer from spring 2024 and beyond. We have a wealth of shows to entertain you, from fantastic Derby Theatre produced shows to topclass touring productions, fabulous family shows to wonderful one-nighters, plus LOTS of ways for you to get involved in the work we do. Enjoy taking a look through the brochure to see what takes your fancy! It’s an exciting time for Derby Theatre! We were thrilled to hear that we had been awarded a £10m grant from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities towards the development of our much-valued venue. The theatre is approaching its 50th birthday in 2025, and this funding will allow us to secure our future for the next 50 years and beyond. We welcome nearly 100,000 people a year through our doors to see shows, with 25,000 workshop and learning activity opportunities, so we are thrilled that we will be able to use this funding to offer an enhanced experience to our visitors and encourage even more people to visit us. Key areas of development will include: a new purpose-built studio theatre, improved spaces for learners and the community, plus improvements to our front of house area and the audience experience for both the main house and new studio. The overall cost of the re-development will need additional investment, and so to generate additional funds, we are delighted to launch Derby Theatre: New Horizons, a campaign to reach out to our audiences, communities and businesses to ask for donations and support in preserving our much-loved theatre for many more years to come. One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warnings about the Big Bad Mouse and tiptoes out into the deep dark wood. She follows snowy tracks and encounters mysterious creatures – but the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist... does he? How much human potential is compromised by Britain’s ever-tightening hostile environment? This new play from Phosphoros Theatre encapsulates the radical joy that sees the company resist dominant and reductive media headlines. Community Service Thu 2 – Sat 4 May MAIN HOUSE It’s the 1980s. Inspired by the life of community hero Trevor Prince, Community Service is an emotional and uplifting theatre show. Prince, one of the Midland’s first Black Police officers and an acclaimed gospel guitarist, faces conflict on the streets, at work and in church. To bring harmony to all this discord he must find the spirit behind the letter of the law. Full of live music and wit this dynamic show is set against a backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain, the Handsworth Riots, miner’s strikes and casual racism. Meanwhile, in the Pentecostal Church a schism is being questioned by children who are listening to secular music on the radio and rebelling against the strict rules of their immigrant parents. Created by internationally acclaimed company Stan’s Cafe with musician Reisz Amos (AKA Oddpriest), DJ/Choreographer Paul ‘Steady’ Steadman, Gospel Revisited Project and a talented team of actors and musicians.

Fri 17 – Sat 18 May STUDIO Inspired by author Alison Uttley’s Country Child, this new play is based upon her childhood memories. Born Alice Taylor, at Castle Top Farm, Cromford, Alison’s career spanned over forty years with over 100 published titles. Her success was worldwide and A Traveller In Time became a BBC television series.

Alison Uttley’s Derbyshire Childhood vividly and nostalgically recalls life during the late Victorian period. We meet Alison when she comes home to Castle Top Farm from Manchester University for the wedding of the ‘live in help’ Becky Moss. The Circus, The Wakes, Christmas and the annual visit by the Irish harvesters are amongst the memories shared.

What the Butler Saw By Joe Orton | Directed by Michael Cabot

Tue 11 – Sat 15 June MAIN HOUSE Within his private psychiatric clinic, Doctor Prentice is interviewing a new secretary. Geraldine wants the position but seems underqualified and uncertain about her parentage. Mrs Prentice appears, flushed and in urgent need of a drink, following an illicit encounter at the Station Hotel. In the meantime, Doctor Rance, a Government Inspector and Sergeant Match, a policeman, arrive amidst increasing chaos with searching questions of their own. What the Butler Saw is Joe Orton’s most ambitious play, manic farce and masterclass in fearless comic writing. No institution, political view or tradition is safe, as Orton explores comic territory few playwrights have dared to visit. Joe Orton was born in Leicester in 1933. During a short, dazzling career, he shocked, outraged and delighted audiences with his riotous black comedies, including Loot and Entertaining Mr Sloane.

Sat 22 June – Sat 6 July MAIN HOUSE A wonderful and whacky theatrical adventure for all ages Take a trip down the rabbit hole with Alice and join her on a ridiculous and riotous adventure through Wonderland. As Alice lands in a unique underground world, she encounters an abundance of absurd, mysterious and magical characters and comes face to face with the heartless and tyrannical Queen. Alice’s arrival from beyond unnerves the Queen, but when the adventure becomes too much, will our lonely heroine return home…or will she stay and stand up to the madcap majesty? Alice in Wonderland, bursting with brilliant original music, will capture the imagination and curiosity of children and adults alike, a production perfect for all ages that will stimulate and excite the senses at every twist and turn.

(It Were Welfare to Us) A new play by Abi Zakarian

Fri 27 September – Sat 12 October, 2024 MAIN HOUSE Miners, Holiday Makers, Strikers, Bingo Players: those seeking refuge, those demanding hope and those on the trail of fun…UNITE! In 2024, Derby Theatre will be transformed into the site of The Derbyshire Miners’ Holiday Camp in Skegness. This was the place miners went to convalesce, and later to holiday, as it was turned into a pioneering holiday camp for Derbyshire miners and their families. Take a trip through the decades as we follow the fortunes of the camp through the highs and lows of history; meeting a family across the generations and exploring how time and change affects communities and individuals alike. Expect Brass Bands, rousing speeches, entertainment and a whole load of bingo! Written by award winning British-Armenian playwright Abi Zakarian who was born and raised in Derby.

MA Applied Theatre and Education Develop your skills and confidence as a classroom educator, workshop facilitator, Youth Theatre director, community artist using theatre and drama to contribute to social change, working in areas such as schools, prisons, communities and the care system. You’ll work and study alongside theatre professionals and specialist academics at Derby Theatre for an inspirational learning experience.

BA(Hons) Technical Theatre and Performance Design An interdisciplinary course where you will develop technical and creative skills across a wide range of theatre/performance production styles. You will explore the collaborative relationship between performers, designers and technicians, mirroring Industry practice. Delivered alongside Derby Theatre, you will work alongside professional designers, directors, technicians and performers in a professional producing theatre. This programme aligns with current technological advances that have shifted the creative and technical approaches to the theatre and performance industry. Graduates from this course will be multidisciplinary designers and/or technicians familiar with the creative possibilities of existing and emerging digital technologies alongside traditional theatre tools and techniques. This includes expanding practices such as socially engaged, immersive, site-specific, design-led performance, performance installation, exhibition, event and sound design. If you are unable to attend a performance, for any reason, we will happily exchange tickets to another performance during the run (if available) at a charge of £1 per ticket - with any price difference, additional payment may be required, or if the ticket price performance you would like to change to is less, the difference will be returned to theatre credit. We do not offer refunds.

Schools and Groups We offer schools and groups a range of discounts on numerous productions - and offer ‘reserve now, pay later’ on bookings, allowing you time to secure the seats you want, with time to then confirm your numbers and arrange payment at a later date. See individual show pages for more information. Schools’ bookings can be made via BACS, credit card or invoice.

Finding Us By car If you are travelling by car, Derby Theatre is located just off the A601 in the centre of Derby. Car parking at Derbion Basement Derby Theatre is directly above Derbion Basement Car Park, the most convenient, safe and secure city centre parking all under one roof, accessed from Traffic Street. The postcode for the car park is DE1 2PL. There are also convenient car parks opposite the Theatre: opeland Street, Derby, DE1 2PY. By train We are very close to Derby Railway Station, approx. 10 minutes’ walk from the station. Follow signs to Derbion after leaving the station.

By bus Trent Barton run several frequent routes serving Derby and the surrounding areas. Most buses stop at Derby Bus Station, a 5-minute walk to and from the entrance to Derbion Shopping Centre.

By taxi If arriving by taxi, please request to be dropped off at the Derbion Basement Car Park (which will allow you 20 minutes free drop-off time). For your return journey, we are more than happy to order a taxi to be waiting for you after the performance, please ask at Box Office on arrival.

When processing your booking the Box Office will ask you your name, address, telephone number and email address. This information may be used to keep you informed about forthcoming events at Derby Theatre. With your permission we may also pass on your name and address to other arts organisations who may send you information of a similar nature. You’ll be asked if your details can be used in this way at the time of booking.
