BY JOHN STEINBECK
THU 6 FEB – SAT 1 MAR MAIN HOUSE
A gripping tale of hope and friendship.
Lennie and George are unlikely best friends, two drifters bound together by a shared faith and the ambition to live the great American Dream. Landing a job on a Californian ranch during the Great Depression, their hopes of earning money to eventually buy a place of their own are raised, but will they be fulfilled?
Of Mice and Men remains as powerful and relevant today as it did when originally written in 1937. Based on Steinbeck’s classic novella, and with themes of friendship, migration and prejudice, this play continues to move and resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Don’t miss out on this must-see, new production of this compelling and evocative story.

The Olivier Award-nominated play
One man’s spiritual journey is about to begin… after he’s posted one last TikTok. When Yasser decides to take part in itikaf, sleeping and fasting in the mosque for the last ten nights of Ramadan, he soon regrets his decision. British Sign Language Interpreted and BSL Integrated Performances
BSL Interpreted Performances
We provide British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted performances for all of our MADE IN DERBY productions, as well as some touring productions. Our performances are usually interpreted by TheatreSign.
BSL Integrated Performances
A BSL integrated performance embeds signing performers into the action of the play, in costume and interacting with the characters, making the performance fully accessible to Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing audiences. Selected Derby Theatre productions have fully integrated British Sign Language.
Captioned Performances
Captioning converts spoken word into text and is presented on a screen at the side of the stage. Captioned performances are currently available for all MADE IN DERBY main house productions and some touring productions in the Main House and the Studio.
Selected Derby Theatre productions have fully integrated captioning.
Captioning using The Difference Engine
Some performances are captioned using The Difference Engine – a tool that can be downloaded onto your smart phone or tablet prior to the show.
The captioning is streamed directly to your phone so we recommend that your mobile device is fully charged prior to the performances. This is not a replacement for BSL and we appreciate it will not be suitable for all who are Deaf and hard of hearing.
Audio Described Performances
Audio description is a form of audio-visual translation that use the natural pauses in dialogue and critical sound elements to provide a live verbal commentary through a personal headset.
All of Derby Theatre’s MADE IN DERBY productions are audio described, as well as some touring productions.
Accessible Performances
Touch Tours
Touch Tours enable you to explore and familiarise yourself with the stage, props and costumes prior to attending a performance.Touch Tours are available (included within cost of ticket) 75 minutes prior to Audio Described performances.
Relaxed Performances
Ideal for audience members who are on the autistic spectrum or have sensory sensitivities, or those who would benefit from a more relaxed environment.
Each Relaxed Performance will be adapted for the specific needs of the audience – house lights may remain on at a low level throughout, other lighting effects may be toned down and the volume of sound effects reduced. Audience members are also free to leave the auditorium during the performance and use our chill out space.
Dementia-Friendly Performances
We offer Dementia-Friendly performances so that people living with Dementia, and their families and carers, can enjoy a visit to the theatre in a supportive and relaxed environment. There will be a more relaxed attitude to leaving and re-entering the theatre and making noise, the house lights will be kept on a low level.
There will also be a quiet space available for use at any time before, during and after the show. Our friendly staff will be happy to offer assistance too, including staff who are Dementia Friends.

University of Derby Second Year (BA) Theatre Arts
By Tom Basden
Joseph K
FRI 9 – SAT 10 MAY
STUDIO
Directed by Phil Green
Experience the weirdly changing world of Josef K. It all starts with two uninvited visitors and some half-eaten sushi as Josef is plunged into a surreal journey through a murkily opaque legal system. Can anyone give him a straight answer? Does anything make sense? Why is logic in such short supply? At turns comic and disturbing, the play explores alienation, identity the struggle against incomprehensible authority and the nature of justice. Don’t miss it!
University of Derby Third Year (BA) Theatre Arts

Jekyll & Hyde
FRI 23 – SAT 24 MAY
MAIN HOUSE
Directed by Amanda Wallace
In 19th Century Victorian England Harriet Jekyll, desperate to break free of the repressive convention of mourning for her dead husband, seeks excitement from the darkest of places. In the 21st Century, Florence, a young blogger, is accused of provoking an extremist political group to justify acts of violence. The repression of female voices through the decades gives rise to the Hyde that may just live within us all.
Evan Placey’s sequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s horror novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, presents a modern twist to this most famous gothic horror.

For Everyone
We want to be a theatre for everyone, creating shows that tell your stories. And we’re much more than one building: we bring many of our events to you.
For example, Theatre Unwrapped offers an insight into how our Made in Derby shows come together.
For Children & Young People
You can make us your doorway into the wonderful world of theatre. Join our groups to develop your skills.
We want you to become the new generation of theatre makers. That’s why we run groups where you can learn everything you need to know about performing and putting on plays.
For Artists
We understand that emerging artists need cash, space and support to create great work. Our artist development opportunities help theatre makers break into the business, understand their options and stay afloat.
We love to co-create work in partnership with talented newcomers and we often commission work from emerging artists. Through our networks, we link all kinds of theatre makers, and we regularly post call-outs for opportunities.
For Schools & Colleges
Groups from early years to further education are invited to make our theatre their classroom. Fuelled by professional theatre makers and backstage magic, we make texts come to life. We’re committed to supporting learners of all ages. So we’re endlessly inventive in the way we work with schools, nurseries and further education groups.
