Despite having worked for Nash for almost two years I still feel like I’ve only just started. They say time flies when you’re having fun, but apparently time also flies when you are ridiculously busy!

Never The Same Twice Because life at Nash is fast moving the work is really varied. One day I will be in the studio photographing new products for the website or retailer launch sheets, the next chasing Alan around filming some live action, then maybe a few days of video editing and finally anything from taking photos of big Church and Copse Lake carp to lending a hand at a Royston work party or a weekend show. The variation I think is what makes it such an amazing environment to work it, and I think everyone at the office agrees no two days are often the same.

I was interrupted writing this by a call from one of our consultants whose mate had landed his target fish from an extremely difficult pit. This fish has only done 5 or 6 captures in the last 12 maybe even 15 years! It really was an honour to go and get some shots for him. An incredible old scaley mirror that tipped the scales to 48lb – definitely one for the target list in the future! That’s part of my job that I really love. I arrived at a lake having never met the guy in my life, but to share that buzz with him really was a privilege and a great example of how you can come across all sorts of different but like-minded characters!

I’m part of the media team, my main task being video production. Video is such a large part of our marketing and we are constantly striving to bring out fresh, quality content as regularly as we can. However with increased content come more regular deadlines and sometimes it seems to be a non stop cycle of late night Red Bull fuelled editing sessions to get those videos out on time! What always makes the intense screenwork worth it is the number of really nice comments we get and positive feedback when the videos are so well received. It’s always what motivates us to bring you more and better content.

Monthly Mayhem The big shift in the video team over the last 12 months has been to bring out a new substantial video launch the first day of every month. The sort of thing you would expect to find as a chapter on a DVD, but instead of holding it back we give it to you straight away.
European roadtrips, a look at the history of Nashbait and of course the cherry on top which was Eurobanx 3. Special recognition to Carl for the finished film as the edit truly did almost become the end of him! Lots of hours and little sleep to produce a truly awesome film from Oli’s raw footage.
I’m really proud of what we have achieved and some of the videos that myself, Carl, Oli and Alex have produced. Oli’s Mission to the Ebro, Urban Banx episodes in Cardiff as well as the wicked London episode, the return of Tom’s Viral followed shortly by the death of Tom’s Viral followed shortly by the birth of Life@Nash,
What I can tell you that there is PLENTY more where all that came from – so shameless plugging moment – make sure you are always ready and waiting at 5pm on the first of every month, set for a new Nash TV production!!

Big Pit Big Challenge So what of my own fishing? We’ve not long come back from Royston for the Mega Social weekend with a load of guys who kindly donated to the KHV Research Fund. We all mucked in with the fishing, had a few beers, a lovely barbecue and spoke of all things carp fishing. What stood out to me was as Alan was doing a question and answer on everything the lads wanted to talk about we kept hearing the same thing: – ‘Yeah, but it’s easy for you Alan, you guys get all the time in the world to go fishing!’ It may appear to be the case, it couldn’t be further from the truth! We all struggle to find the time to get on the bank and hands down I spent a lot more time with the rods out before I worked for Nash compared to now! As for Alan, what people don’t see is that he will be in the office at 3 and 4am answering emails and will fit literally an hour or two fishing in anywhere he can. He’s the absolute prime example of someone making time to fish through hard work and unstoppable enthusiasm.

When the ‘to do’ list is long you’ve only got to be editing well into the evening a couple of times then spending an entire weekend at a shop day and before you know it you’ve missed two weeks of fishing!

So despite having lots of time to fish what have I done this year? Very ‘wisely’ chosen to take up a ticket that will probably require a LOT of time in order to be able to even see a carp let alone catch one... How does 180 acres of gravel pit where one or two bites each season is good going sound for a challenge? But as they say, a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor, so it was challenge accepted and the campaign on the big pit began. I’m around two months in and have managed to get down for maybe 10 or 11 nights with no success yet. The last session down there I did manage to drop on to some fish for the night but the rods saw no action, so it was again a pack up with my tail between my legs in the morning and back to the drawing board. So far I have enjoyed it though, it’s hard work but every time I walk the pit it seems to get smaller, I discover something new or learn something about the place. I hope if I keep going it will just be a matter of time!

Road Trip Result! The other side of my fishing is European roadtrips. Due to my work I do see a lot of the continent and so every now and again I manage to organise some fishing over the channel. One of the May Bank Holiday weekend was a perfect opportunity to get across the pond again, with a trip lined up to Belgium with my old pal Loz Smart who recently left Nash to pursue a career change in design outside the fishing industry. We had three nights at our disposal but after two blank days in 30 degree heat, three moves and very few signs of carp we were getting a little desperate. Then much to our surprise around 8:30pm on the last evening the first rod was away, resulting in a small double figure common – we hadn’t blanked! We always take alternate runs, whoever’s rod it comes to and so it was Loz’s turn on the rods next and at first light he managed a lovely Belgian common, a touch under 30lb. Our target for every trip is one fish each and so it was mission accomplished. Though the big Belgian river had one more surprise for us just an hour or so before we began the big pack up we had the final run of the

trip and much to our surprise, I slipped the net under a 43lb 6oz mirror. Result! Again big thanks to Belgian consultants Jelle and Frans for all the help along the way! Those trips abroad are such a highlight and although Life@Nash means you can’t often get out as much as you want to, there are so many good guys in the team that those sorts of opportunities to fish special venues in great company really make up for it.
