Our tour departs from Shkoder and heads to the village of Theth. We have a short visit to the village and then head out to the surrounding area. Our first stop is the “Kulla” (tower) of Theth where men would hide for protection from families with whom they were engaged in a blood feud. From there we continue with a 20 minute walk to visit the canyon and the Grunas Waterfall. This beautiful waterfall is considered a natural monument and is under state protection. The falls are 30 meters high and all the water that flows is entirely from melted snow. We also enjoy our picnic lunch here. If the group feels up to it and depending on the time, we can continue on a moderate 40-minute hike to visit the wonderful Blue Eye. This spring is formed by the erosion of the cliff by the Black River and several bathing areas and waterfalls have been created here. The Blue Eye is one of the rarest beauties of Albania. After our day’s exploration in the northern Alps of Albania, enjoy the ride back to Shkoder in the comfort of our jeeps. 6

The tour begins in the morning and we meet in the Center of Tirana or we can pick you up at your hotel. A one-hour drive takes us through Divjake to the Karavasta Lagoon, the largest and most beautiful offshore wetland on the Albanian coast of the Adriatic Sea. The drive along the sandy belt between the Karavasta and Godulla Lagoons in the southern part of the Divjaka National Park is fascinating and full of surprises. Three channels connect the two lagoons where brackish water habitats and small sandy islands can be studied. The lagoon is famous for the rare Dalmatian pelican which has nesting grounds there. In fact 6.4% of the Europe's population of this type of pelican is found in this lagoon. Divjaka National Park comprises a dense forest of pines and deciduous trees and is situated among the sand dunes in the northern part of the lagoon. 8

“On a whim, myself and a friend booked a day trip to the Karavasta Lagoon and Divjake national park while on vacation in Tirana. Although the tour is ostensibly for a minimum of four passengers, we were able to book it for two at only a small cost. We were picked up at our hotel and carried in a very smart 4WD to the national park, stopping along the way to purchase local watermelon and spare water bottles. The tour was fantastic as we were offered the opportunity to experience dynamic and entertaining off-roading in the park as well as seeing the beautiful lagoon, the details and history of which was expertly described to us by our driver and guide…....” W. Our tour begins with an early pickup either in the Center of Tirana or at your hotel and head to the city of Vlorë. Known also as Valona, this historical city is located in southwestern Albania where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. Vlorë is situated as the gateway to the Albanian Riviera, the gem of Albanian Tourism, and sits at the head of the Karaburun Peninsula and Sazan Island. We spend time here at the sea so you can get some sun while enjoying the sandy and rocky beaches and the scenic mountains nearby. We visit a cold water spring which is connected to the salty sea. Vlorë holds a significant place in Albanian history as this is where the Albanian Declaration of Independence was signed on 28 November, 1912. Now its time to have our speed boat adventure. Since the time of Julius Caesar until the Second World War around the Bay of Vlora coast have developed a number of naval battles, the consequence of which has been several shipwrecks. A part of relics amphorae underwater as other objects are still under water. Our boat will enter at the Pirates Cave. After the speed boat adventure we will enjoy the local food and get back to Tirana. 10

KARABURUN ALBANIA “ …..A few days later we booked another tour, this time a slightly longer one to go speed boating and see the beaches outside the southern city of Vlore. Again, the tour did not disappoint and we were treated to cave swimming as well as stunning, unspoiled beaches and some rather adventurous offroading – perhaps too adventurous for some! Although I like to think that this was only to cater to our preferences. On the way back we stopped at a local restaurant (more like a family home, really – it would have been impossible to find without a guide) and were treated to absolutely massive amounts of freshly caught fish and seafood, with delicious local wine to boot. This too was included in the price of the tour. In summary, Off Limits Albania allowed me and my friend to discover parts of Albania that we didn’t know existed and could scarcely have found ourselves during our short stay. I fully recommend and would very much enjoy touring with them again in the future.” W. Svenselius

The city of Berat offers rare examples of an architectural style typical of the Ottoman period. The people of Berat were first called Illyrians, then Arbër, and finally Albanians. Located in central Albania, Berat bears witness to the coexistence of various religious and cultural communities down the centuries. It features a castle, locally known as the Kala, most of which was built in the 13th century, although its origins date back to the 4th century BC. The citadel area numbers many Byzantine churches, mainly from the 13th century, as well as several mosques built under the Ottoman era which began in 1417. The old town section of Berat is one of the oldest in Albania, with the earliest traces of settlement dating from 2600-1800 BC and archeological finds such as ceramics from the 7th or 6th century BC. 16

“Off Limits Albania made our week in the country fantastic. As experienced travelers in our mid-sixties, my husband and I were excited to explore Albania, but really didn’t want to rent a car. I contacted this company to inquire about private day tours. Erald quickly responded to say he basically could arrange anything we wanted to do during our stay. Last minute, we decided we also wanted to go to Lake Komani. This extra trip was quickly arranged. Erald was so flexible even taking the weather into account so we would have the best days for travel. All three days were excellent! Erald shared his wealth of knowledge about each area with us plus some great Albanian legends. The countryside was beautiful especially Theth, the people very friendly, and the traditional lunches delicious. The private day tour prices were very reasonable. We basically spent three whole days with Erald. He is an enthusiastic, kind-hearted person who made our trip to Albania one we will always remember. Thank you for the easy communication, your flexibility, and the wonderful time.” C. Harringman
