OFFSET REVIEW OF 2013 PART 2 INTRODUCTION

Looking through the pages of this review, I’m overwhelmed by all that happened in 2013 and all the inspiring work that’s being created both internationally and in Ireland. Amazing and sunny Spring days welcomed hoards of attentive OFFSETers to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. We were treated to three days of amazing talks and debate. It was a personal highlight for me to see Oliviero Toscani appear on the main stage. He inspired me as a teenager with his wonderful creation, Colors Magazine. To this day I don’t think I’ve found a magazine as brilliant as it was. His uncompromising approach to creativity is awe-inspiring. It’s both daunting and motivating to read about everyone 2013, to see all the projects that these creatives have poured blood sweat and tears into. So, as I flick through these pages I can’t wait to dive into 2014 and try and emulate some of the work of these fine creatives. It’s great to see what inspired them, what they’re listening to while they work and how it’s sometimes the smallest projects that give the greatest rewards. 2014, Let’s Roll! PETER O’DWYER OFFSET

Sum up your 2013 in 3 words BABY, BABY, BABY!

What blew your mind? My mynde.

Achievement of the year Professional: I dunno about achievements, but I’ve worked solidly for The New Yorker throughout the year which has been a delight. I Also wrote and illustrated a kids book which is a first. I’m shopping it around. Personal: We had our second child a year ago, so much of it has been the survival of that wonder.

What annoyed you the most? I try not to go there.

Favourite piece of work Yours: Well, this is hot off the err.. Universe. I did it yesterday. I’ve been working on a retrospective book, on and off, probably longer than the Bible took to produce (Old and New Testaments). This is the end spread of it so I must be getting towards the Revelation (See next spread). Someone else’s: I really dug this piece, it’s simple and really captures the BIG SUR vibe in a way that would be good to have hanging on your wall. It’s by Nat Russell, Mollusk Jamboree (See across). Favourite event Exhibition: Chances of going out and about has been slimmer than a rattlesnakes hips, but I did get to see Justine Frischmann’s first solo show in San Francisco last month and that was a good time. Gig: Blankety Blank on the gigs this year. Good job I spent the last 25 years going out. Festival: We went to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park. We stayed just long enough to hear Steve Martin say “You can follow me on Twitter, or you could do something more meaningful with your life”. Find of the year AD BLOCKER.

BRIAN HERRON BLOGGER : DUBLIN

Sum up your 2013 in 3 words Cycled more often.

Achievement of the year Professional: Working on a new beer brand. Personal: Drinking the brand’s new beer.

Find of the year Waxahatchee. What blew your mind? James Gliek’s ‘The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood’. Awesome stuff about how computers work and how information is organised. What annoyed you the most? Shitty UPC interface and remote. Just like every year. Biggest disappointment Twerking not making it into the Oxford English Dictionary. Best meal Some place in NYC that I can’t remember the name of. I can’t remember the food either. But the meal was memorable because all the OFFSET crew got wasted on some drink called a Spanky Gimlet, then there was an awkward accidental grabbing of a waitress’s bottom and then Albert Hooi go-go danced on a bar counter. Stocking fillers Best song: ‘Misery over Dispute’ – Waxahatchee. Perfect 90s post-punk, except y’know, done now. Actually, I think that the whole album just counts as one song really. Best album: Breakbot ‘By Your Side’. Just ‘effing brilliant. Even if it technically came out in 2012. Best book: Hip Hop Family Tree - Ed Piskor, Fantagraphics. The best of music and history and comics. Best film: Seeing Dazed and Confused in the cinema. Yeah, ok it’s not new. But it’s timeless, and that’s better.

Favourite piece of work Yours: www.dartofphysics.ie or possibly working on bits of the Vodafone site that no one will every notice. Someone else’s: Neil Gaiman’s ‘Ocean at the end of the lane’. Favourite event Exhibition: I feel like I spent most of the year going to little exhibitions or group shows. I like that Dublin’s gotten so casual about putting on these cool no fuss events. And I like that everything seems less cliquey and siloed. In the last month alone there’s been the Hollywood Babylon poster show, Mess It Up, Chris Judge’s solo show, Steve McCarthy’s Souvenir project, Matt Griffin’s residency at Whelan’s, the Superstition IGI show at Fire – just tons of stuff all the time. So, while there’s not one show I loved and maybe taken one at a time they’re small potatoes but I have acquired tubes and tubes of reasonably priced prints that I have to get framed and also a bread board with a hippo painted on it (thanks Chris!). So that’s good right? Gig: Le Galaxie, Meeting House Square. I was very proud of mixing Jameson and ginger ale to match the exact colour of Nestea so that I could sneak booze in. Gig also fun. Festival: No festivals this year – just seemed too busy at all the wrong times. And I have that too old for tents feeling. Oh wait, OFFSET counts as a festival. So, yes OFFSET. Other: Achewood, one of the greatest comics ever, coming back to life after a four year-ish hiatus. I’ve started reading it again from the beginning.

JEREMY LESLIE PUBLISHER / BLOGGER : LONDON

Sum up your 2013 in 3 words Bang. Crash. Whallop. Achievement of the year Professional: Getting the first magCulture conference up and running, and feeling it had matched my vision for the day. A big thank you to everyone involved in making it a success, particularly my wife Lesley. Personal: After many previous attempts finally developing a gym habit. Favourite piece of work Yours: My Favo(u)rite Magazine, a crowd-sourced celebration of magazines we published to raise funds for injured art director Bob Newman. Created on the fly, we felt it would be a worthy project but were genuinely surprised to receive 88 excellent submissions from around the world that together make an excellent case for the power and relevance of magazines. Worthy and good! www.magculture.com/blog/?cat=62 Someone else’s: ‘Where You Are’ by Visual Editions. Delicious storytelling using maps. Envy! www.visual-editions.com/our-books/where-you-are

Favourite event Exhibition: Paul Klee at Tate Modern. I knew it would be good but it was great. Gig: Kraftwerk at Tate Modern was the perfect gig. An uncrowded hall, great sound and updated versions of the favourites. Festival: Made my first trip to the Manchester International Festival. A popular, cultural takeover that made the whole city hum. Other: AGI Open, a real buzz seeing so many students enjoy graphic design. www.agi-open.com What Design Can Do (Amsterdam), two days of design talks in the broadest sense, set in a Victorian (or whatever the Dutch equivalent!) theatre hall. Highlight – a gospel choir rendition of Dieter Rams’ 10 commandments. www.whatdesigncando.nl The Drowning Man by Punchdrunk, experimental storytelling at its best, with multiple scenes performed at the same time across five storeys of a carefully art directed old Royal Mail sorting office in Paddington. I can’t pretend to have followed the narrative but enjoyed trying to find the links. www.punchdrunk.com/current-shows CONTINUED >>

JEREMY LESLIE CONTINUED

Find of the year World Music by Goat. From 2012 but I only discovered it this year. Indescribable (thanks David). What blew your mind? Massive Attack x Adam Curtis at MIF actually was mindblowing. And in amongst all the boom it was wonderful to hear Liz Fraser singing live. www.mif.co.uk/event/massive-attack-v-adam-curtis What annoyed you the most? This spiteful, mean-spirited British government. Biggest disappointment Trying to work with one of the UK’s leading magazine distributors and seeing at first hand how poor they are at what they’re supposed to do. We work with so many great, dedicated people and companies it’s an unpleasant surprise when you come across one that is the opposite. Best meal End-of-summer-holiday dinner with family in Boston. Soooo grown up.

Stocking fillers Best song: ‘Treason! Animals’ Franz Ferdinand. The monochrome set reborn. Best album: ‘Reflektor’ Arcade Fire. Hated it at first, but then slowly and inevitably... Best book: ‘Designing News’ by Francesco Franchii, intelligent insight into editorial news design at this critical moment in its development, written and edited by one of the form’s leading exponents. Best film: None. Hero of 2013 Globally, Edward Snowden. Personally, Pablo Martin for replacing my damaged font file in time for my AGI Open talk. Villain of 2013 Idiot rich people, so many to choose from. I’ll go with Vincent Tan booing his own football team. One thing you would have done differently? I wish I’d arranged for my sons to skip school and attend The Making Magazines conference. Most memorable moment The night-time taxi ride from airport to hotel in Delhi, veering past and narrowly avoiding endless numbers of unlit goods trucks. Thoughts for 2014? More generosity please.

Favourite piece of work Yours: The collaboration with Trevor Finnegan on his OUR TYPE street installations at The Bernard Shaw, which lead in a round about way to my screening of the US Documentary Sign Painter Movie, which also lead to us (Toejam) producing our own documentary about sign painting in Dublin which you can see at www.gentlemenofletters.com Someone else’s: Designgoat’s Gray project, their Eileen Gray inspired ash chair and accompanying lamp and table. Such an amazing voice and am happy to have put on her third show with us in Dublin in October just gone. What blew your mind? SXSW in Austin Texas. Lived up to its own hype. Make mistakes, learn from it, be better next time. Most memorable moment Getting married to Emma….awh…but seriously. Day was great and so good to have all our emigrated friends back home. Thoughts for 2014? It’s going to be a good year for Dublin, we’re out of the hole, if only psychologically, theres a lot happening in music/art/food/drink and it will be noticed.

MASER STREET ARTIST : DUBLIN

Sum up your 2013 in 3 words Travel, Focus, Love. Achievement of the year Professional: Creating an edition of fine art prints with Tandem Press in Madison Wisconsin. Previous artists to me working on an edition with Tandem were Jim Dine and Sean Scully, two artists I have huge admiration for. Personal: Keeping the demons at bay. Favourite piece of work Yours: Hard to say, I’ll base it on the experience, but saying that there’s been too many great experiences shared with good friends to name one. Just before Christmas I completed this installation in Limerick “No.27, a nod to Ed Ruscha” This was a great week, good crew working with me. (photo attached) Someone else’s: Wasn’t created in 2013 but for the first time I got to see ‘Blue Green Red’ by Ellsworth Kelly at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.. Overwhelming feeling of ‘this all makes sense’ when I saw it, I even bought the small cheap glossy print in the museum shop and now hangs proudly in my living room.

Favourite event Exhibition: JR the artist in CAC in Cincinnati, 3 floors of work with a large piece on the exterior of the center. It was a great insight into not only how his work touches and communicates to the world but gave me a better understanding the scope of his passion and hard work ethic, left feeling very inspired and motivated. http://tinyurl.com/p9ejqd2 Gig: I don’t go to many gigs, I should make more of an effort so its Damien Dempsey in the Sallynoggin Inn. Creamy pints and a few sing songs with mates. Festival: Body and Soul. I got lost in it for 3 days. www.bodyandsoul.ie Other: The Homebird parties (our clothing label). We host pop up parties when we release a new range. Always a full house, good people, beer and music. www.facebook.com/homebirdclothing What annoyed you the most? How quick the year went by. Biggest disappointment How much the government lie to the hard working people of Ireland, I see it first hand here in our city. Their empty promises result in our empty pockets. Best meal Dinner with the mother for her 60th. CONTINUED >>

Stocking fillers Best song: Al Stewart ‘Year of the Cat’. Best album: ‘Almighty Love’ by Damien Dempsey. www.damiendempsey.com Best book: ‘Total Recall: My unbelievably true life story’ by Arnold Schwarzenegger (See across). Best film: Searching for Sugar Man. Hero of 2013 Christy Moore. Have had the pleasure of hanging out with him on a few occasions this year. He holds court in conversation, takes everything at his own pace, even walking! Once took us half an hour to just walk through St. Stephen’s Green park. He stops when making a point, always a valid one though. I learnt a lot from the man in just one year, always great conversations. He also makes a serious chicken curry!

One thing you would have done differently? Went swimming more in the sea with friends. The summer came and went before I knew it. Dublin is blessed to have the sea, I realise this more when I spend a few months in the US in landlocked states. Most memorable moment I spent approximately five months of the year in the States, traveling, painting and exhibiting in new cities, Cincinnati, Chicago, Wisconsin, Arkansas and NY. Meeting interesting people and making new friends. Same for Europe, best memories come from new experiences. Thoughts for 2014? I would say they are the same as mostly everyone else, just to work harder and to spend more time with family and friends. Hope to visit and paint some new cities again this year.

Favourite piece of work Yours: Pictograms, lots and lots of icon-work; apps, sites, way-finding but loved getting lost in expanding the icon suite for Meteor mobile. Nerdy, I know! Someone else’s: Our old mucker Stephen McCarthy and the team at GDS’ work on GOV.UK. Rational, transparent, simple. It would never happen on eTenders… take note Enda & Co. Favourite event Exhibition: ‘Traces of Peter Rice’ at the Farmleigh Gallery. Intelligent retrospective. Exhibition design nicely handled by Wolfram Weidner Studio. www.tinyurl.com/l4glz2q Gig: David Byrne & St. Vincent at Electric Picnic. Oh the brass, so much brass! Festival: Electric Picnic or OFFSET, flip sides of the same coin! Find of the year Minecraft and the crazy, wild worlds my kids make in it. It’s a socialist, virtual Lego! What blew your mind? Best film: I’ve small kids so trips to the flicks are few and far between unless it’s with them, so The Hobbit DOS was a treat to watch with them, arms out trying to grab the 3D! For the adult I’m pretending to be, it would have to be Nick Ryan’s excellent ‘The Summit’. Great storytelling, tragic, layered. Totally gripping. Hero of 2013 Keith Byrne; renaissance man. Villain of 2013 A Kardashian. Any of ‘em. What’s the point? One thing you would have done differently? Not let George put diesel in the car, it all went a bit Zoolander. Most memorable moment Floating on a surfboard with my eldest, Tom, waiting for waves as the sun set. Thoughts for 2014? Slow down. Make time. Say yes to new things. Vasectomy?
