Van Oord Offshore ready to become a prominent EPC contractor

Complete marine solutions

Dutch-based Van Oord is a leading international contractor specializing in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind). For over 100 years, the company has helped to create the infrastructure for the world of tomorrow. Maurice de Kok, presently Area Manager Offshore Pipeline Installation, started his career at Van Oord in 1990 as a civil engineer. The first two decades he worked on the dredging side, in 2010 he became responsible for the Offshore Oil & Gas division of the family-owned company. We spoke with Maurice about the role of an offshore EPC contractor and the unique shallow water pipe lay barge Stingray.

Van Oord’s first shallow water pipe lay vessel Stingray was named at the COSCO shipyard in Nantong, China at the end of September last year. The naming ceremony was performed by Mrs A. Athmer-Albersen, wife of Managing Director Offshore, Mr J.B.E.M. Athmer.

As an independent family business Van Oord is characterized by visible leadership, long-term vision and a sound financial position. Substantial investments in people and equipment are made with great care to ensure the continuity of the business. As part of its on-going invest programme, the company launched four new vessels in 2011; the self-propelled cutter suction dredger Athena; the new flexible fallpipe vessel Stornes; and the two new multicast Oceanus and Cronus. Currently under construction are the Aeolus (installation vessel for offshore wind farms) and Artemis (self-propelled cutter suction dredger). The new shallow water pipelay barge Stingray is, of course, also part of this investment plan, which is aimed at strengthening Van Oord’s position as a well-equipped offshore EPC contractor. Interface risks

The Stingray will be operated by Van

Oord’s Offshore Division, a separate business unit that provides complete (EPC) packages that focus on the preparation, installation and protection of offshore oil and gas infrastructure, offering maximum value for its clients’ investments by minimising interface risks. Maurice de Kok: “In a subcontractors role it is impossible to mitigate scheduling issues for a client, that has to be executed by the main contractor.” “As a subcontractor we have experienced the knock-on effect of scheduling issues. And to tackle that problem we only saw one solution: to become a prominent EPC contractor ourselves. Van Oord has executed several contracts as EPC contractor, the missing part in our One Stop Shop strategy was the pipelay capability. We had to subcontract this part with the associated risk of availability and scheduling issues with a third party. After discussions with our Board a

business plan was made that resulted in an investment proposal. Extensive market research was done including interviews with future clients i.e. operators. With the potential to offer our One Stop Shop concept, we received green light for this investment: Stingray was build and now we are in a position to offer our clients the complete near shore solution as EPC contractor for offshore marine construction including pipeline installation. We own and operate all equipment required to offer our services to the oil and gas industry and do no longer depend on third party equipment. Our concept will make Van Oord more competitive by cutting the risk factor that any main contractor will put on the scope of a subcontractor to manage the interface and the risk associated with the interface. This will result in a cost efficient solution of any marine construction project for our clients.”

The shallow water pipelay vessel Stingray during her trials.

Not unimportant in this respect is of course the fact that the offshore oil and gas industry is a segment which is less troubled by the present economic crisis. The worldwide demand for energy, the relatively high price of oil and the need to keep reserve positions up mean that oil companies are continuing to invest in exploring onshore, offshore shallow water and offshore deep water reserves. Switch

De Kok made the switch from dredger to EPC offshore contractor without real difficulty. “In principle, it was not difficult, but more a challenge. And more far-reaching, giving our work a completely new élan. As a dredging company we also undertook plenty of non-dredging related projects, such as building quay walls, breakwaters, bridges and tunnels. In other words, we have a broad background in project and logistic management. However, as EPC contractor you are

fully focused on an entire project, and that implies the inclusion of much engineering. That is the innovative aspect. We are no longer a single piece involved in someone else’s planning to finally complete the total puzzle. Instead, we ourselves are now responsible for the puzzle as a whole, and specifically for ensuring that all the puzzle pieces slot seamlessly together is where we see the biggest advantages for our customers. The difference is that while as a dredger you work often for government customers and the occasional project developer, in oil and gas, our clients are mainly the major operators like Shell, Exxon, BP, Chevron and the national oil companies in the Middle and Far East.” Barge modification

The Stingray was built at Jingjiang Nanyang Shipyard (owned by POET Singapore) in China and was acquired by Van Oord in July 2011.

Since its acquisition, modifications of the barge to make it fit for pipelaying have been executed. The modification works consisted of design, construction and installation of the stinger, of a marine evacuation system (MES) of firing line facilities and modifications to the accommodation. The entire process took around nine months, followed by a naming ceremony on September 28, 2012, at Cosco Shipyard in Nantong, China. The vessel, equipped with a fully automated 10 point mooring system, is suitable for installation and replacement of offshore pipelines of up to 60 inch diameter, in shallow water. The prime focus for this unique barge is pipelaying works in combination with shore approaches and other associated activities in shallow water from shore to - 50 m. “There lies the strength of Van Oord,” emphasizes Maurice de Kok. The Stingray is suitable to install pipelines in S-lay mode. Typically, laybarge methods are used where

substantial lengths of pipe have to be laid continuously. In addition, the vessel is also suitable for a wide range of light offshore installation works such as buoy and manifold installation, hook-up, commissioning, piling and midline tie-ins. First project

After sea trials and testing, the Stingray became fully operational in Q1, 2013, with the first task scheduled in Korea where it is executing a shallow water pipelay job in combination with the installation of an SPM system. This project involves a new SPM system with associated pipeline works for the client S-oil and Daewoo E&C (70%) and Posco Engineering (30%). The project location is the Port of Onson, close to Ulsan on the southeast coast of Korea. Van Oord will mobilise a trailing suction hopper dredger to perform pre-trenching works prior to the shallow pipelay works that will be executed by the Stingray. The pipelaying works consist of the installation of a 3200 m, 42 inch pipeline, and are expected to be completed at the end of Q2, 2013. During the past few years Van Oord has executed several projects including the installation of pipelines and mooring systems, as part of EPC

8

2013

contracts. Projects of note include the Midia Marine Terminal in Romania, the offshore facilities for the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline, UAE, and more recently, the installation of an SPM and subsea pipeline for a power plant in Fujairah, UAE. For the latter two projects, the installation of the pipelines was carried out by the bottom pull method, entailing the pull of prefabricated pipeline strings from the shore with the aid of winches operated from a pontoon located offshore. Future outlook

With the successful completion of these projects and the addition of the Stingray to the fleet, Van Oord can establish a name as a fullyfledged shallow water pipeline installation contractor, able to offer different types of installation methods to meet specific project and client needs. The market is ready for it. This is further confirmed by the fact that on March 1, 2013, Van Oord signed a second contract which also involves a new SPM system with associated pipeline works. Awarded by the state-owned petroleum, natural gas and gasoline company CPC Corporation from Taiwan, a 4.6 km long and 42 inch pipeline has to be installed near Taoyuan in Taiwan at a maximum

water depth of 40 m. Maurice de Kok concluded by saying: “The offshore industry works with a slightly longer lead time than the dredging industry, but I can reveal that there are plenty more projects in the pipeline. We have our fingers in a great many pies for 2014 and 2015, and we are already at the negotiating table with a number of customers, for new contracts. These positive developments confirm that the purchase of the Stingray and our decision to take on the role of EPC contractor were the right steps in securing the future of Van Oord. At the same time, we remain duly cautious. As a newcomer in the field of pipelaying, we are now in the process of building up a track record, and in that process trust is a very important issue. As the saying goes, reputations are hard won but easily lost. Against that background, we will not be taking on any work we are not sure we can successfully conclude either in terms of technical requirements or planning. All the pieces of the puzzle need to fit together as smoothly as possible. People may find us somewhat traditional in our approach, but at the end of the day, Van Oord has just one goal in mind: continuing to provide our customers optimum service, for many years to come.”

Keppel Verolme: poised for continued growth into the future

Provider of choice

In drydock DCV Balder, alongside the semisubmersible drilling rig Scarabeo 6 and in the background the crane vessel Saipem 7000.

With 20 yards worldwide, Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) believes in its ‘Near Market, Near Customer strategy’, catering directly to customer needs and contributing to local content. Keppel Verolme is testament to the effectiveness of this strategy. Located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Keppel Verolme has grown to become Europe’s trusted offshore and marine solutions partner.

2013

Equipped with a versatile and highly skilled workforce, Keppel Verolme’s work includes dry-docking, repair and maintenance, modification, conversion and construction of various vessel types. Adding to its track record, the yard welcomed three of the world’s largest crane vessels into its dry-dock in 2012.

Undocking of the Saipem 7000.

World’s largest crane vessels The first project was for Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC), for a life extension of the Deepwater Construction Vessel (DCV) Thialf. DCV Balder followed after, with both vessels undergoing a thorough inspection, maintenance and repair works. Shortly after Balder had left the yard, Italian customer Saipem sent its semisubmersible Saipem 7000 for an overhaul of its thrusters and paint work. Its arrival was accompanied by the Scarabeo 6, a Saipem drilling rig requiring extensive maintenance and repair. Scarabeo 6 spent half a year in the drydock, upgrading its drilling capabilities, prefabricating and installing two outer sponsons, extending its deck extensions and other upgrading work. The vessel left the yard on 2 December 2012, with highly satisfied owners, Saipem. Keppel Verolme continues to strive to exceed customer needs, delivering projects to its global clientele safely, on time and within budget. Harold Linssen, Managing Director of Keppel Verolme, said: “Keppel Verolme is pleased to be able to service our repeat customers Heerema Marine Contractors and Saipem once again with safe and quality project deliveries.” Repeat customers

For its commitment to quality and

value-added services, Keppel Verolme sees many of its customers return to Rotterdam. Recently the yard secured a second major job from Stena Drilling for the upgrade of semisubmersible drilling rig Stena Spey. It will undergo a Special Periodical Survey (SPS) & upgrade. Expected to be delivered in 2Q 2013, the rig will be deployed to the North Sea. The yard’s work scope for this projects includes dry-docking and the installation of a new crane, helideck and accommodation module. Existing accommodation facilities will also be upgraded while the rig undergoes its regular maintenance works and a painting program. In 2010, the yard carried out another project for Stena Drilling – the repair

and maintenance of a 33,000 deadweight tonne dynamically positioned drilling semi-submersible Stena Don. Steel solid delivery

Work for yet another valued customer, Noble Drilling, was done by Keppel Verolme in July 2012. The jack up rig Noble Byron Welliver was jacked a couple of meters to allow inspection of the top of the spud cans and the leg connection. In the same period, Keppel Verolme carried out several steel repairs and a painting programme on the rig. For a job well done, Noble Drilling increased the work scope of Keppel Verolme with a contract to prefabricate and commission the steel portions of the jack up’s legs. The project is currently underway with the installation of these parts scheduled in April 2013.

‘Keppel Verolme is testament to the effectiveness of the ‘Near Market, Near Customer strategy’ Keppel O&M believes in.’

New frontiers

Bearing testament to Keppel’s range of offshore solutions for the European offshore wind energy sector, Seafox 5, the world’s largest multi-purpose offshore wind turbine installer, was delivered to the Seafox Group in 2012. The vessel, build at Keppel FELS, is able to operate in harsh environments and up to 65 meters in water depth - the deepest for such vessels - as well as carry a wide variety of foundations and turbines. The vessel visited the Keppel Verolme yard briefly before service. Chartered to the joint-venture company Aarsleff Bilfinger Berger (ABJV) Dan Tysk, Seafox 5 will install offshore wind foundations in the 288 megawatt (MW) Dan Tysk wind farm in the German Sector of the North Sea.

12

2013

With the growing offshore activities in the European wind industry, Keppel Verolme provides full service, (e.g. maintenance and mobilization) to owner of this type of vessels. Innovative solutions

Keppel Verolme has been contracted by Singapore based company Ezion Exerter to dismantle and segregate the jack up rig Prime Exerter. The purpose is to enter the Caspian Sea area in order to execute a drilling contract. In addition, repair, maintenance and upgrade works is being performed. The Prime Exerter, formerly known as Energy Exerter, arrived at the Keppel Verolme yard in February 2012. The rig was bought by Ezion in October 2012 and renamed. The rig need to pass the Volga-Don canal in order to enter the Caspian Sea. This canal has 17 meter wide locks, which is one of the main criteria for the segregation plan.

Keppel Verolme started with removal and dismantling the 1125 tonnes cantilever and drill floor. Currently Keppel Verolme is removing the legs, which is done by a sheerleg with extended boom. The rig is jacked down on three connected, 16.5 meter wide barges which are suitable to carry the segregated parts into the Caspian Sea. Conclusion

With a longstanding tradition of high quality execution and delivery, Keppel Verolme continues to strive to meet customer needs and deliver projects safely, on time and within budget. Leveraging Keppel O&M’s strengths in technology and project execution, Keppel Verolme is poised for continued growth into the future, offering innovative and cost-effective solutions for the offshore industry.

Dagny jacket awarded to HFG Early February this year Heerema Fabrication Group’s Vlissingen yard in the Netherlands signed the Letter of Award with Statoil for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction of a 16,000 tons launch jacket and a pre-drilling module of 155 tons for the Dagny field development in the central part of the North Sea.

The Dagny jacket will be the largest launch jacket ever to be constructed at HFG’s Vlissingen fabrication facility. Heerema Vlissingen will start the fabrication of this challenging and record breaking jacket in November 2013 with a planned delivery in April 2015. The jacket will be approximately 142 metres tall with a footprint of 60 x 50 metres and a top of 40 x 30 metres. The pre-drilling wellhead deck of 14 x 14 x 4 metres, will accommodate the phased development of the Dagny field and will eventually be integrated into the topsides cellar deck. “This assignment will expand once more the design and fabrication capacities of our organisation, after the successful and challenging Statoil Valemon jacket project completed last year,” says Tino Vinkesteijn,

CCO Heerema Fabrication Group. The Vlissingen facility is currently fabricating four jackets, until the 2nd quarter of 2015. According to VP Technology Cees Spaans of HFG: “Based on the various FEED concepts developed by HFG Engineering, varying from lift jacket to launch jacket, Statoil selected the launch concept. The fact that following this FEED study we have been awarded the EPC contract for the Dagny jacket after the successful Valemon jacket execution in 2011-2013, proves that our fabrication-driven engineering approach is the right direction.” Remco van Gilst, Senior Vice President Commercial of Heerema Fabrication Group, comments: “Being awarded an EPC contract of this magnitude,

demonstrates the confidence of our client Statoil in our capabilities and the relationship development during the recent execution of the Valemon jacket project. We are looking forward to working again with Statoil on this challenging project and to successfully integrate the interface management in order to accommodate the predrilling phase.”

Real time insight into logistics process Allseas, the global leader in offshore pipeline installation and subsea construction, has signed for the delivery of a supply chain forwarding portal by logistics software supplier Yellow Star Solutions, based in Barendrecht, Holland. The system must assist Allseas to centrally manage their logistics processes.

The supply chain forwarding system is a tailormade solution for production companies in the offshore sector. The application is an integrated addition to the Oracle ERP system, which Allseas already works with. An ERP traditionally supports financial, purchasing, sales and manufacturing processes in a good way. With the addition of the Yellow Star-application, Allseas can now also control its logistics processes efficiently and centrally (while maintaining local flexibility).

pressure. Regular shipments are transported with containers, while rush orders are often transported with trucks, vessels, planes and even helicopters. For coordinating these various transports in an efficient and pro-active way, Allseas went looking for a logistics addition to its Oracle ERP system. The supply chain forwarding portal of Yellow Star was chosen after a thorough selection. According to Allseas the application will become thé central portal for generating and storing all logistic documents. The purpose of the application is to consolidate all shipments efficiently from 1 central system. Via the integrated tracking & tracing option, everyone has real time, 24/7 and anywhere on the entire globe access to the transport status and the location of all goods. Every employee has access to all transportation-related documents. This results in less unnecessary communication.

Allseas transports a large amount of supply, maintenance and project equipment from and towards its offshore installation vessels. The complex logistics to organize these activities efficiently is characterized by a great need for flexibility, a lot of urgent orders and high time

Vroon Offshore Services responds to customer’s wishes

Large numbers of new building programmes on the stocks

Artist’s impression of ERRVs/FSVs, ten of which are currently being fabricated in China (illustration: VOS).

He is responsible for and in charge of the activities of Vroon Offshore Services as undertaken on the North Sea, from offices in Aberdeen and Den Helder. Having first established the VOS organisation in Aberdeen, Scotland, starting in 2009, the 46 year-old Jan-Piet Baars arrived in Den Helder, the Netherlands, at the start of this year. Vroon is the largest service provider in the Netherlands in the market for offshore support vessels.

14

2013

‘At the Nanjing yard, six ERRVs are under construction, each with a length of 50 metres.’

Managing director Jan-Piet Baars is responsible for the VOS organisation in Den Helder and Aberdeen (photograph: VOS).

Jan-Piet Baars first joined Vroon in 2009. “My first assignment was to establish the VOS organisation in Aberdeen, and strengthen Vroon’s market position. With a fleet of around fifty emergency response and rescue vessels (ERRVs), the scale of the Vroon organisation and the diversity of its customers can both be described as considerable. I also concentrated on the further development of the ERRV product itself, by determining how further added value could be provided to the users. Possibilities include ERRVs with a cargo carrying capacity and ERRVs equipped with daughter craft or auxiliary craft, therefore capable of simultaneously covering a number of different locations. We describe these vessels as field support vessels (FSVs). Other possibilities include ERRVs with greater engine capacity and a winch, capable of offering tanker assistance, for FPSOs. Vessels of this type are described as tanker assist vessels (TAVs).” To modernise and expand the fleet operating from Aberdeen, a major new building

programme was undertaken between 2007 and 2011. The programme involved a total of fifteen new ERRVs of the types IMT955 and IMT955L, all of which were fabricated at the Zamakona Pasaia yard in Spain. The next new building programme for a further six ERRVs and four FSVs has since been initiated, in China. Three segments

While the main focus of the activities in Aberdeen, Scotland is on the deployment of ERRVs/FSVs in British waters, the vessels operating from Den Helder in the Netherlands operate in three different market segments. Jan-Piet Baars continued: “From our offices in Den Helder, in addition to emergency rescue and response activities in the Dutch sector, we also provide platform supply services and subsea support throughout the whole of Northwestern Europe. In total, some fifteen vessels are involved. The platform supply vessels (PSVs) we deploy on the Dutch market are active in the Southern North Sea (SNS) Pool. A number of our other PSVs are

deployed on behalf of BP, while we are also active on the spot market.” In 2013, the subsea support vessel (SSV) VOS Shine was added to the fleet. “This vessel has been chartered by Bluestream Offshore, specialists in the provision of Diving, ROV and Rope Access Services, who will be employing the vessel in the German sector of the North Sea to provide assistance in the laying of cables for a new wind farm. Our aim is to expand our position in the segment of subsea support in relatively shallow water. Demand in this segment for efficient and modern vessels is clearly growing. The VOS Shine and its sister ship VOS Sweet are ideal for this segment. Both are capable of carrying out a range of activities in addition to diving support, for example construction and ROV support work. We intend to also examine the segment of the subsea support sector beyond the capabilities of the VOS Shine and VOS Sweet. This sector is served by slightly larger dive support vessels (DSVs) suitable for deployment both in the renewable energy and the oil and gas market.

2013

15

The experience we are currently acquiring with our new SSVs will enable us to achieve future successes in that larger segment both in terms of vessels and in particular in our support activities. In addition, however, we of course also intend to continue investing in our PSV product, based on our expectations of further growth in that segment, by responding even better to the wishes of our customers.” New building

Both for further growth and to replace the older tonnage from the fleet operating from Aberdeen, a series of six ERRVs and four FSVs is currently being fabricated in China. “At the Nanjing yard, six ERRVs are under construction, each with a length of 50 metres, and all with daughter craft capabilities. In addition, four 60 metre-long FSVs with cargo carrying capacity are being fabricated at the Fujian yard. These vessels are a response to the increasing demands from operators wishing to work with ERRVs that also offer load carrying

capacity. All ten vessels will be deployed on the North Sea, and will be operated from Aberdeen.” The first ship in the new series is due to be handed over by the Nanjing yard in April/May 2013. The new ERRV class is a design from our own drawing board, based on experiences accrued with the ERRVs that joined our fleet in 2007. As part of the fabrication of these new vessels, an order was also placed for the fabrication of a series of special rescue vessels, so-called daughter craft (DCs) and fast rescue craft (FRCs). Genoa and Singapore

Alongside activities in Northwestern European waters, Vroon Offshore Services are also highly active in other parts of the world. As explained by Jan-Piet Baars: “We have our own offices in Genoa (Italy) and in Singapore. From Genoa, we mainly serve the Italian domestic market, the Mediterranean Sea and North

Africa, by providing supply vessels (PSVs) and anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels. Our ships are for example active in the waters of Italy, Egypt, Israel and Libya.” “For us, this is an emerging market, where we operate some twelve vessels. The eastern section of the Mediterranean Sea and the North African market are in fact highly segmented, and local in nature. The same applies to Southeast Asia, a market which for us extends from the Bay of Bengal right through to Western Australia, where we mainly work with anchor handling tug supply vessels. The type of vessel deployed in these waters is approximately 60 metres long and delivers a bollard pull of 65 tonnes. We have had approximately 25 vessels of this type fabricated at the Fujian yard. Eight of these are operated from Genoa, while the vast majority are based in Singapore. We are in fact now considering the fabrication of the next generation of these vessels which could in the future be deployed off the coast of Western Australia.”

Two ‘game changing projects’ for 2013

Jumbo Offshore is raising the bar Jumbo’s innovative concept, ‘Lift. Ship. Install. All in one go.’ is proving extremely efficient and is popular with its clients. This helped Jumbo building up a solid and reliable reputation as a combined transport and installation contractor in the offshore industry. Now Jumbo Offshore is moving a step up, being awarded two ‘game changing projects’ for 2013.

2013

Jumbo has been awarded a FPSO mooring spread installation, tow out and hook-up contract by EnQuest. EnQuest is the largest independent oil & gas development and production company in the UK North Sea and is redeveloping the Alma and Galia fields. For the EnQuest project Jumbo will act as the main contractor, a well considered step in the development of Jumbo’s Offshore division. The Alma and Galia fields are located in Blocks 30/24, 30/25 and 30/29, 310km south-east of Aberdeen in the UK North Sea. The fields will be brought on stream in 2013 using the FPSO vessel ‘EnQuest Producer’, formerly known as the ‘Uisge Gorm’. This FPSO is currently under refurbishment at a repair yard in Hamburg, Germany.

FPSO tow out and hook-up

Jumbo awarded the FPSO tow out and hook-up scope to contractor Boskalis Offshore. They will tow the refurbished FPSO from the yard in Hamburg to the offshore field. There Boskalis will connect the mooring legs to the EnQuest Producer and execute the final tensioning.

piles, tendons and temporary buoyancy modules for the Papa Terra project offshore Brazil. Jumbo is awarded the project by McDermott and will be executing the offshore hand-over of the equipment to McDermott’s DB50. Scope of work

First time

Jumbo’s Heavy Lift Vessel Fairplayer will execute the installation of the mooring spread in just two voyages, utilizing her enormous hold, onboard 900t mast cranes and Dynamic Positioning System (DP2) to ensure station keeping during installation activities. This is the first time a HLV will execute the complete mooring installation, including the pre-tensioning of the anchors and bottom chain. The mooring installation will take place in the second quarter of 2013. At the time of writing Jumbo is conducting engineering and preparation works. Jumbo enters Brazil

Another first timer for Jumbo is the award of the contract for the load-out, transport and offshore hand-over of

Special engineered seafastening in the hold of Jumbo’s J-Class vessel.

The scope of work on this project performed by Jumbo consists all of the engineering and project management for the load-out and offshore handover of eight anchor piles, eight Temporary Buoyancy Modules and 128 tendon sections. Jumbo is also responsible for the design and fabrication of grillages, seafastenings, hang-off points and other handling devices. The equipment will be loaded on Jumbo’s DP2 vessels Fairplayer and Jumbo Javelin and transported

2013

At the time of writing this article (March 2013), Jumbo is preparing the deployment of five subsea structures for PetroSA’s Ikhwezi project. The structures weighing up to 185t need to be deployed to a water depth of 160m offshore South Africa, where weather and sea states are getting hostile due to the approaching winter. Jumbo was awarded this project on an intervention basis and only had five

weeks to complete the preparations and execute the deployment of the five structures. This once again proves Jumbo’s flexibility both onshore (engineering and project management) and offshore (project execution). Challenging projects

Jumbo Offshore continues to stretch itself with new and challenging projects. So far 2013 is an exciting year for Jumbo’s offshore division, delivering efficient and pioneering offshore installation services, including: • Installation of a mooring spread with driven piles offshore the UK; • Offshore hand-over of piles, tendons and TBM to an installation vessel offshore Brazil; • Installation of subsea structures offshore South Africa.

New Anchor Handler design Damen Shipyards Group introduces its newly designed AHTS 200, a versatile deepwater Anchor Handling Tug Supplier able to operate in water depths in excess of 3,000 m. Following the company’s ambitions to increase its market share in the offshore industry, Damen heavily invests in designing state of the art vessels for several offshore sub-markets, noticeably the Offshore Support, Offshore Wind, (Seismic) Research and Transport & Installation industries. Backed by ample R&D and engineering capacity, its own construction yards, specialized partner yards and a rapid expanding service organisation, Damen feels confident that the chosen approach will be successful.

The typical Damen design philosophy, featuring values like safety, functionality, standardisation, modularisation, ease of maintenance and overall quality, can also be found in the AHTS 200. An extensive research analysis was executed on hull optimization, sea keeping qualities, noise and vibration reduction, fuel oil consumption reduction, changing rules and regulations and client-needs and lessons-learned from other Damen designs.

The electrical-drive winches provide a clean, green, economical, functional

The AHTS 200 includes a new and innovative winch arrangement which is quite decisive for the overall dimensions and layout of the vessel. The electrically driven winches may be considered an innovative approach, as the market is traditionally dominated by low-pressure hydraulics.

and safe solution for the anticipated operations.

Netherlands-based Selmers B.V.

Market leader in pipe coating equipment

The supervising of a concrete coating process.

Originally established in 1966 as a design firm for mechanical and electrical installations and cable network systems, the Netherlandsbased Selmers B.V. has since developed into a leading designer and supplier of complete pipe coating plants and pipe handling equipment. In the field of coating based on its 3-layer pipe coating technology, the company is in fact world market leader in the onshore market segment. The ever ambitious Selmers is currently well on the way to acquiring a leading position in the offshore sector, too.

22

2013

Selmers has developed and manufactured equipment for practically all major players.

“We design and build process lines and machines for the blasting and coating of steel pipes that are subsequently used by various players, including the oil and gas industry,” explained Sales Manager Bart Appelman. “Each machine or production line that leaves our factory is in principle custom-made. Our added value lies in the fact that based on a flexible standard product, we are able to respond efficiently to the specific wishes of our clients. We also produce a wide range of transport systems for moving and positioning of pipes, so that they can be welded together. We have f or example produced a pipe lift consisting of a total of eight units, that brings welded joints - with a total length of 72 metres - to another level, at which point they are taken up by the J-lay tower. Based on a combination of knowledge and experience, we are able to offer our worldwide circle of customers total solutions in which we

take full responsibility for the design, technology, fabrication, transport, assembly and commissioning of the process line/machine.

staff are focused fully on current and future trends in the coating market. Selmers is always ready to take the next step in quality improvement!”

Every element of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical engineering is executed in house. Over the years, we have developed our own ERP package capable of efficiently and flexibly supervising the entire process. As a result, we are able to precisely match the engineering package to a range of standard and special components in our product database.”

Promising

To maintain and indeed expand its leading position in this high-end, high-tech sector, Selmers itself is permanently involved in innovation. By investing in people and equipment, the company is constantly striving to raise the level of its performance even further. Appelman continued: “We have our own Research & Innovation department where the

Selmers first came into contact with the pipe coating sector in the early nineteen seventies. During this period, a large volume of exclusive engineering work was carried out on behalf of the world-renowned pipe coating company Bredero Price. When Bredero Price moved out of the Netherlands in the early nineteen eighties, Selmers decided to continue in the pipe coating sector. “In that period we shifted our entire focus to installations for applying internal and external coatings to pipes for oil, gas or water, as well as the full range of pipe handling equipment needed for transporting the pipes through the coating plant or across the deck of a pipe lay vessel,” explained Eline van Beek, Sales Applications Engineer.

always ready to take the next step in quality improvement’ Sales Manager, Bart Appelman

“In the beginning, we were limited to engineering work, but at a later stage we actually started building the equipment for pipe coating plants, ourselves.” The first contracts came from Germany and Russia, exclusively for onshore activities within the pipe manufacturing industry.” Appelman added: “A substantial proportion of our customers operate exclusively onshore. These are pipe manufacturers who have reached the conclusion that merely selling steel pipes offers no added value. In addition to pipe mills, many of them nowadays also operate a coating plant enabling them to deliver complete products. Examples of such customers are Salzgitter, Mannesmann and British Steel.”

supplied plants worldwide to locations including Russia, the Middle East, Nigeria, Turkey and Venezuela.” “It was not until 1985 that we supplied our first offshore equipment, in the form of melt kettles for marine mastic, to Allseas. This substance was used for filling field joints on offshore pipelines. Nowadays approximately 80% of the company’s systems are deployed onshore and the remaining 20% offshore, making Selmers a renowned name all around the world.”

As Sales Manager Appelman continued: “We have now on occasion developed and manufactured equipment for practically all the major players including for instance Subsea 7, Technip and Heerema.” “Over the coming years, we foresee sufficient possibilities to contribute to our market. These expectations are readily confirmed by an already healthy order portfolio. In that respect, at least we have suffered little from the general economic crisis.”

At Selmers every element of

Dutch student produces computer model

Drilling ship for Arctic area The design of a drilling ship for the Arctic area by Huisman, the leading Dutch innovator, has once again been brought several steps closer to realisation. The ship will require an anchor system with which ice of up to 3.1 metres thick can be broken. Dutch student Chris Keijdener produced a computer model for the overall system, as part of his graduation from the TU Delft.

The reason for Huisman based in Sliedrecht to design a drilling ship for use in the Arctic area is to ensure that the expected imminent demand for innovative drilling vessels of this type can be met as quickly as possible. Some time ago, Huisman initiated work on the design of the JBF Arctic. A great deal of time has been invested in the design, and model tests have already been undertaken at the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Anchor system

Studies were previously undertaken within Huisman to generate measurement data that could be used for the design of the anchor systems. The systems comprise twenty lines produced from a combination of very strong polyester wires and steel chains with at the end an anchor linking the vessel to the seabed. Initially, Huisman had restricted its research to carrying out mainly static calculations (with only constant forces). The TU Delft student Keijdener then came onto the scene. “My thesis is all about the addition of fluctuating forces, the dynamic behaviour of the ice forces and the resultant movements of the vessel itself. All this information had to be charted out, in order to come up with a more optimised and more realistic design for the anchor system.” The second objective of his thesis was to design an anchor system for

26

2013

the JBF Arctic, to allow the vessel to cope with semi-sub extreme ice conditions, in other words a layer of ice approximately 3 metres thick. Challenge

As Keijdener himself explained: “The greatest challenge was to use data measured at specific ice thicknesses, ice speeds and angles of rotation of the vessel to build a model capable of predicting the ice forces in real time, for every conceivable combination of ice thickness/speed and position/ rotation of the vessel. A key aspect was first gaining an understanding of the fracturing behaviour of the ice. Ice can after all fail through bending or high pressure (crushing) whereby crushing results in far higher forces on the vessel and therefore must be avoided. Against that background, it was essential to check whether the ice was in fact only being broken by the application of bending forces. Bending occurs if the ice is forced against angled sections of the ship’s skin while crushing occurs if the ice is forced against vertical sections of the skin. The geometry of the ship around the depth used in the interaction with ice is reproduced in figure 1. This geometry is fairly complex, and contains both angled and vertical sections. Depending on the angle of rotation of the vessel, interaction can occur with the angled, the vertical

or a combination of both sections. See the top right photograph.” Keijdener subsequently used the characteristics of the geometry for interpolating between the data points of the model test, in other words for predicting the ice forces for the combination of ice thickness/speed/ rotation of the vessel, which were not investigated during the model testing. Keijdener continued: “By deriving a formula capable of calculating the distribution of the interaction with angled and vertical sections of the vessel, I was able to interpolate between the forces from the model tests so that the ice forces could be calculated for any random angle. I then further developed the computer model, to make it possible to also interpolate for a range of ice thicknesses and ice speeds, so that the force can now be predicted for all non-implemented combinations. Finally, the initial phase of the interaction was added, whereby the forces gradually build up because the ice rubble has by that point not assumed its definitive volume. Once this had been completed, it was possible to calculate the constant component of the ice force, but since the dynamic behaviour was also important, it was also essential to be able to calculate the fluctuating component of the force.”

figure 1. Overview of the JBF Artic.

Artist’s impression with the underwater section visible.

Spectrum

For the fluctuating component, Keijdener examined the frequencies present in the force data, but the spectrum revealed no specific frequencies. Equally, not all the spectrums demonstrated a single uniform shape. “In the end, we decided to assume that the energy had a uniform distribution across all frequencies, whereby the volume of energy was calculated from the model test data. Following rounding off of the constant and fluctuating components, time-domain simulations were undertaken, to be able to study the response of the vessel to the forces, and hence design the anchor system.” Matlab

For the design of the anchor system, a so-called Matlab programme was developed responsible for optimising the length of the line and the pretensioning of the system. Using this programme, the influence of a whole range of parameters was investigated, in order to come up with the optimum design for interaction with ice. The entire study was in fact purely theoretical, with the exception of the model tests. Conclusions

The most important conclusion is that the eventual anchor system of 20 anchor lines will be able to handle ice of approximately 3.1 metres in thickness.

The interaction shortly after the model had been withdrawn and after a test whereby crushing had occurred.

It should be noted that neither the anchors nor the required systems in the vessel itself, nor any other practical aspects such as the installation of the systems have yet been examined. A further conclusion is that after the event, the movements of the ship were less than expected. The rotation of the vessel was never so great that crushing occurred, while the dynamic shift in respect of constant shift was reasonably small given the extreme ice forces. Further research will still be necessary since the majority of tests were carried out with smooth ice. This was sufficient to gain an impression of the handling capability of the ship/anchor system in respect of ice forces and how an anchor system could be designed for a vessel in ice conditions.

However, the disadvantage is that smooth ice rarely if ever occurs in nature,” explained Keijdener. “In reality, there are nearly always ice ridges and icebergs, which both cause such high forces that from a practical point of view, it would be impossible to design an anchor system capable of coping with those forces. That is why research will be needed into ice management, and how ice management can be used to destroy these ridges, so that the eventual forces on the vessel and anchor system are maintained at a far lower level. In this way, the entire combination of ice management and anchor system can be designed so that the required level of safety and operability can be achieved, in an economical manner. One of my fellow students is currently working on these aspects.”

Early March the new Happy Sky was delivered to BigLift Shipping. The vessel is now being fitted with her cranes and will start her maiden voyage at the end of June. Her first four voyages will be for the Cape Lambert port B development.

Crane curve Happy Star

Happy Sky after seatrial.

BigLift Shipping expects the Happy Star at the end of 2013 and after installation of the cranes the vessel will begin her first voyage in April 2014. These flagships both have lifting capacities of two times 900 mt, combinable to 1,800 mt. The vessels’ length and the forward position of the superstructure offer a single, large cargo hold and an extremely wide, open deck area. To make sure that BigLift meets the latest market requirements, both vessels’ specifications were changed during the design and construction period. The most important change was the increase of the cranes’ lifting height and outreach and the decision to operate both vessels without a stability pontoon. BigLift considers the use of stability pontoons for vessels of this size a large safety risk in loading and unloading operations and chooses to design vessels who do not need them. Happy Sky

During Happy Sky’s construction, BigLift decided to raise the crane pedestals by 4 metres, so that more

lifting height could be created as a reaction to market demand. The cranes can now lift to 41 metres above the main deck. Happy Sky is equipped with folding hatch covers, a large poop deck and cargo rails which make the vessel’s full deck area available for cargo stowage. The vessel’s tween deck is adjustable in height and she is allowed to sail with open weather deck hatches at a draught of up to 7.5 metres. She also has Finnish/ Swedish 1A Ice Class notation. In trials she kept a speed of 17 kn. Happy Star

The Happy Star too, saw an increase in lifting capacities during the design phase. The crane pedestal was raised by 4 metres and the jib extended with 6 metres, resulting in 10 metres more lifting height and 6 metres more outreach. This makes the vessel’s crane curve unmatched amongst heavy lift vessels. As a direct consequence of the lifting increase, the vessel’s beam was widened to 29 metres, giving the vessel sufficient anti-heel capacity and stability to use the cranes to their

full capacity of without the need for a stability pontoon during the loading or discharging operations. Her lifting curve ranges from 1,800 mt at 25 metres, 1,600 mt at 28 metres to 1,000 mt at 41 metres, with a lifting height of nearly 47 metres above the main deck. With the weather deck extending over the full width of the vessel, her load space can used to the utmost. The weather deck hatch covers are pontoon type and bear 15 t/m2. The tweendeck is adjustable in height and Happy Star can sail with open weather deck hatches on a draught of up to 8 metres. The vessel will have Finnish/Swedish 1A Ice Class notation. The hull was adapted to the new dimensions and special attention was given to optimising the power performance, resulting in a trial speed of 17 kn. With these features, Happy Star offers unique lifting capabilities for the heavy lift and project cargo market and we are certain we can offer our clients the very safe and reliable transport solution they look for.

Big Foot hull, to be the World’s deepest TLP installation.

Dockwise delivers mega sized ETLP hull Dockwise is located in Breda, The Netherlands, and is the world’s largest and most versatile seagoing heavy transport shipping company. Mid March 2013, the company announced that it has safely transported the Chevron-operated Extended Tension Leg Platform (ETLP) hull from Silli-do Island, South Korea around Cape of Good Hope and discharged at Corpus Christi, USA. The mega sized hull will be used for the Big Foot field, considered to be one of the largest and deepest oil discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico.

The ETLP hull was transported from Silli-do Island, South Korea around Cape of Good Hope to Corpus Christi, USA.

Journey

The Big Foot ETLP pushed the Mighty Servant 1 (MS1) to the vessel’s limits. For this project, the deck was enlarged with four outriggers and was opened to re-enforce the internal hull to support the mammoth cargo. “A great deal of engineering was required to ensure a safe and successful transport across the open ocean,” commented Bas Mabélus, Project Manager at Dockwise. The hull was loaded at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering yard and transported 16,100 nautical miles totalling 60 days. World’s deepest

Technology advancement continues to push TLPs into deeper water. Tension leg platforms (TLPs) historically have been limited to working in around 5,000 ft (1,524 m) water depth because of the challenges associated with tendon design and installation. The Magnolia TLP is the deepest TLP installation to date at 4,700 ft (1,432 m) water depth. The Big foot TLP will be pushing the boundaries to 5,330 ft (1,615 m) water depth to be the deepest TLP installation.

Siri Marine from Appingedam

Outstanding in the sensor market How do you measure the movement of a huge, semi-submersible drilling and production installation on board a heavy transport vessel, and what do you do upon approaching the critical values? What do you do when retrieving a jack-up drilling rig, if waves start to exceed a height of one and a half metres? All of these are questions to which Captain Albert Lenting of Siri Marine from Appingedam in the Northern Netherlands has a ready answer. His certainty is based on the use of the motion monitoring systems and decision support guidelines developed in house at Siri Marine.

For Siri Marine, the transport of the Thunder Horse platform represented a breakthrough in the offshore industry (photo: Dockwise).

The breakthrough for Siri Marine in the offshore industry came in 2004, when the brand-new, large semisubmersible drilling and production rig Thunder Horse, operated by BP, had to be taken from Far East to the Gulf of Mexico on board the Dockwise heavy transporter Blue Marlin. As Albert Lenting explained: “I installed a number of motion sensors on board the platform. These were able to measure the various accelerations, which in turn made it possible to calculate the angle values such as roll, pitch and yaw, as well as the heave of the vessel. To compare the data from the various sensors we had developed a series of software modules which in turn delivered an indication of deformation and torsion.

32

2013

On the bridge of the Blue Marlin, a computer and a display were installed from which the captain could easily judge whether the movements of the ship and its costly load were becoming excessive, and if that were the case, whether he needed to reduce speed or change course. For this purpose, he could rely on the decision support guidelines, also drawn up by us. In addition, all this data was stored so as to provide detailed reports at the end of the transport operation. For our new business, established in 2003, this order from BP, undertaken jointly with Dockwise, represented a major breakthrough.

employed in a further series of impressive transport operations, including the transport of the semi-submersible SBX 1 on the Blue Marlin, the Atlantis platform on the Mighty Servant 1, the Shaz Deniz modules on the Mighty Servant 3 and the Blind Faith hull on the Tern. Siri Marine also joined forces not only with Dockwise but a number of other heavy transport operators, and not only for the accurate monitoring of the movements of semi-submersibles, but also of jack-up drilling rigs on board heavy lifters and topsides, a variety of other modules and container cranes on board barges.

The motion sensors and accompanying equipment were subsequently

emerged in 2006. Albert Lenting continued: “Heerema Marine Contractors had been instructed to install a series of large modules on board an FPSO, with their vessel Thialf, off the coast of Angola; in other words, two massive floating objects both influenced by long ocean swell. On behalf of HMC, we therefore developed sensors to measure and reproduce the relative heave movements between the Thialf and the FPSO.” Siri Marine went on to enhance its reputation in the sea towage and salvage sector and in the project cargo sector, with further applications for motion sensors. A system was even developed for the ro-ro and ferry sectors. This weather-dependent lashing system has now been fitted onto almost fifty vessels.

platform is subject to settlement. All measurement data are carefully stored and precisely analysed. The same data can also be used for registering fatigue, a task we are currently undertaking for four customers who operate MOPUs in the waters of Malaysia and Indonesia. Combined with the information from a weather agency, the data thus collected on the environmental impact on the platform can be registered, and subsequently integrated in the fatigue calculations.” Using its own sensors, Siri Marine has also carried out measurements during the installation of a number of mono tower platforms on the North Sea as well as taking measurements on all the mono tower platforms and wind turbines installed in the region.

Siri Marine is currently undertaking a remarkable project in the waters of Malaysia and Indonesia. “For a number of years I have been working in Malaysian waters carrying out measurements on a jack-up rig which has been converted into a production platform or mobile offshore production unit. This project involves the long-term measurement of the inclination, aimed at determining whether or not the

New assignment

This year, the Appingedam-based company was set the assignment by Seadrill of installing complete motion monitoring systems on four jack-up drilling rigs currently under construction, two at the Jurong yard in Singapore and two at the Dalian yard in South Korea. “During rig moves, it is absolutely vital to be able to assess the correct wave height, before

lowering the legs of the rig onto the seabed. Carrying out such an assessment by eye is practically impossible, but thanks to our sensors you have all the detailed knowledge you need. As well as motion sensors, a radar system for measuring wave heights, a weather station and a GPS will be installed on the Seadrill rigs, representing a total system capable of delivering a complete information package, thereby guaranteeing that the right decisions are taken during rig moves.” Seadrill has also taken out further options at Siri Marine for the supply of another four monitoring systems. Other true innovations are the recently developed Fast Craft Comfort and Yellow Black Box systems. “For the Fast Craft Comfort systems we make use of the same senor technologies. In this application, however, we can visibly reproduce the impact suffered by passengers on board fast survey and transport craft. The Yellow Black Box has been designed for monitoring transport operations. It is a standalone logger which can be placed in a container or on an expensive cargo item, and which then accurately registers all movements during the transport. The system can also be linked to a GPS.

IHC Merwede has extended its product range with the introduction of a new series of IHC Packhorse offshore support vessels at an official launch event in Singapore, organised by IHC Asia Pacific, a subsidiary of IHC Merwede. This latest development reinforces the company’s internationalisation strategy, which aims to provide a choice of designs and build locations to its customers on a global basis.

The range of vessels consists of: the IHC Packhorse which has been positioned as a platform support vessel (PSV); and the IHC PackhorseMaxi, which is a variant on the basic

34

2013

hull form, providing a 59-person accommodation unit and a range of options designed for subsea support on IRM work, light construction and cablelaying projects. IHC Merwede

offers the portable equipment for the IHC Packhorse-Maxi, either as an in-house supply package or as specified by customers, depending on their preference.

Agreement

The new IHC Packhorse range will initially be built through the cooperation agreement established between IHC Merwede and Jaya Holdings. Jaya Holdings CEO, Venkatraman Sheshashayee, says: “We welcome the launch of the IHC Packhorse as another key step forward in our ongoing cooperation with IHC Merwede. This is an exciting development in the market to offer vessels built with European quality at Asian prices.” Volume market

IHC Merwede’s President, Govert Hamers, explained that, while IHC Merwede was best known in the offshore sector for innovative custom-built vessels, it had recently extended its product range with the IHC Supporter Class. “This is a cost-effective mid-size vessel, which offers a

reduced build time and flexibility in the selection and configuration of mission equipment by virtue of its modular construction. The IHC Packhorse range represents the first move to extend our product portfolio into the volume market, while continuing to be a dependable partner for offshore operators.” Features

In its pure-play PSV form, the IHC Packhorse represents a vessel, which has been optimised through discussions with operators and charter companies to meet the needs of deep-drilling and deep-water support. Its main features are a large working deck, a fuel-efficient hull form, optimised power distribution and a flexible tank configuration. The same platform is used for the IHC Packhorse-Maxi, which has dual-stability books for operation

HFG starts construction of Montrose BLP topsides At the end of last year HFG’s Zwijndrecht fabrication facility signed the contract with Talisman Sinopec Energy for the fabrication of the 8,500 tons Montrose BLP topsides destined for the UK Central North Sea Montrose and Arbroath field area.

The topsides will have a length of 75 meters, a width of 44 meters and a height of 40 meters. A bridge, optional in the contract, will link the existing Montrose Alpha facility to the new Montrose BLP platform. The ceremonial first cut of steel took place at the end of March at the yard of Heerema Fabrication Group in Zwijndrecht (the Netherlands),

where the topsides will be built. It is expected that the topsides and bridge constructions will be completed for load out in April 2015. The Montrose BLP topsides will be fabricated indoors under controlled conditions, which greatly enhances safety, efficiency and quality of the work. Heerema Zwijndrecht has one of the largest indoor facilities in North West Europe which enable HFG to offer clients these advantages. Wim Matthijssen, Chief Operating Officer of Heerema Fabrication Group said: “Today’s ceremony marks a major milestone in the start of the fabrication of the Montrose BLP

as a non-SPS PSV at deeper draught. It has also been designed for the easy retrofitting of a heli-deck and is pre-strengthened to accommodate a 100-tonne heavecompensated crane. The large deck can carry various mission spreads, including diving support, ROV operation and cablelaying, with portable equipment designed and manufactured by IHC Merwede or as specified by the customer. The IHC Packhorse utilises a low-cost highly efficient solution for the power distribution system developed by IHC Drives & Automation (part of IHC Merwede). Portable dive systems and cablelay solutions are available for the IHC Packhorse-Maxi from two of IHC Merwede’s other business units, IHC Hytech and IHC Engineering Business. This ensures the efficient integration of the equipment into the vessel’s operating systems. topsides. It is furthermore a privilege for HFG to commence fabrication for a client we have not worked for before and who has the confidence in our capabilities to deliver a high quality product on time, but more importantly safely.” The Montrose field lies in Block 22/17 of the United Kingdom Continental Shelf, 207 km east of Aberdeen in the Central North Sea. Talisman Sinopec Energy’s Montrose BLP is designed to maximise recovery from the existing Montrose field and new subsea developments at Cayley gas and Shaw oil fields.

Multi-purpose self-propelled jack-up

NG-9000C wind turbine installation vessel The NG-9000C is a GustoMSC designed self-propelled wind turbine installation jack-up. Three units have been built to the NG-9000C design, two for Fred. Olsen Windcarrier and one for A2SEA. A second unit for A2SEA is currently under construction. Recently, A2SEA received the ‘Offshore Renewables Award’ at the OSJ Conference 2013 for their Sea Installer, the first NG-9000C operated by A2SEA.

The NG-9000C has proven to be the primary market choice for its good balance of cost-efficiency and reliable performance.

The NG-9000C is primarily intended for the Offshore Wind Turbine Installation (WTI) market. This market has gone through a rapid development over the last ten years. Initially, only small numbers of pilot turbines were installed near the shore, with limited component weights and dimensions. But this market has rapidly evolved into a major new offshore installation market, and this calls for dedicated equipment. In contrast to the typical

36

2013

oil and gas installation market, with mostly one-off installations, wind turbine installation is characterized by a strongly repetitive character. For example, last year on average over 350 turbines (equaling 1.4 GW) were installed offshore. This is still far below the rate required to meet the offshore renewable targets as set out for 2020 by, for example, the UK, German, and Danish governments.

Reliable

The newest generation turbines have rotor diameters of over 160 m. To install the turbines at an impressive height of 100+ m above still water level, a stable, reliable platform (jack-up) is required, outfitted with a specialized crane. The weight of the modern offshore wind turbine components ranges from 200 t to 500 t and the majority of foundations, depending on size and type, typically range from 500 t to 900 t.

Load out port

Because of the size and weight of the wind turbine components, and the associated logistic challenges at port facilities, only a few load out ports are suitable for the transfer of wind turbine components. The challenges relate to space requirements, crane capacity at the quay side, ease of access for the typical installation jack-ups and whether the jack-ups are allowed to bring their legs down to the seabed close to the quay side. The NG-9000C is outfitted with a 900 t crane, wrapped around the jack-up leg to save precious deck space. In this way, the deck space can be used efficiently for the storage of wind turbine components and the crane outreach can be utilized to its best advantage over the side of the unit in elevated condition. Self transport

The NG-9000C is designed to carry multiple wind turbine components on board, transport them to the installation site offshore, build up the wind turbine on the pre-installed foundation, move to the next installation site and repeat the installation process until all components from the deck have been installed. Self transport is the preferred method above feeder transport barge with a stationary (on site) installation jack-up. This is mainly driven by the aim to reduce installation time per turbine and reduce the risk per installation (one transfer cycle less), which is increasingly important given the number of turbines to be installed. After transport to site, the NG-9000C brings down the legs to the seabed while keeping position with a state of the art DYNPOS-AUTR dynamic positioning system. Because of the repetitive character, it becomes increasingly important to push the

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier provides innovative and tailored services for the transport, installation, and maintenance of offshore wind parks.

technical boundaries and with that to optimize the weather window. This means that transport to site, dynamic positioning with the legs almost at the seabed, and afterwards leg bottom impact in the last phase of lowering the legs must be possible in as high a sea state as possible. Currently the threshold for installation in maximum water depth for the NG-9000C for dense sand is a significant wave height of Hs=1.8 m. For favorable headings, wave periods or softer soil, the wave height can be increased upwards slightly. No ballasting

After touchdown, the unit jacks with the water just clear of the water surface for a full preload where two diagonally opposed legs are pushed down to the required preload, using the weight of the hull. The NG-9000C is designed so that no ballasting is normally required for preloading and the hull is strong enough to take the shear and torsional loading caused by preloading (almost the entire hull weight resting on two legs, with the other two legs practically only keeping the balance). This diagonal preloading scheme saves precious time compared with the typical preloading operations used in the oil and gas industry, by avoiding the need to transfer enormous amounts of ballast water from one preload tank to the other for the typical 3-legged oil and gas exploration jack-up.

Key ingredients

Once the soil has been ‘tested’ with the required preload, the NG-9000C jacks up to the required air gap, typically sufficient to survive a 20 m wave. Since the jacking operations typically take place every other day (typical installation scheme per turbine), the envisaged number of jacking operations in the design life is easily a tenfold of what is typical for an oil and gas jack-up. This has imposed extra fatigue requirements on both the hull and jacking system. The NG-9000C has been fully designed and screened for heavy duty operations under extended fatigue conditions. In elevated condition, the fully revolving 900 t crane, with state of the art controls, efficiently installs the components that are designed to pick up wind. The lift ends at the most critical phase, mating the lifted pieces with the already installed components, at 100+ m above still water level, with delicate components to be assembled with high precision. For this purpose, the stability and reliability of the jack-up platform, combined with maximum control are the key ingredients for safe and efficient installation.

Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference

Next-frontier E&P projects and the growing importance of social responsibility

The oil and gas industry is always pushing boundaries to satisfy the world’s ever-growing energy demands. Most of the production increase needed to meet global energy demand will be realized offshore. Increasingly, operators will invest in deepwater, ultra deepwater and arctic projects. These next-frontier E&P activities demand new technologies to be developed. But they also underscore the growing importance of social responsibility management, including thorough risk management. During Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands there will be ample attention for both the technical and non-technical challenges associated with the industry’s future growth.

38

2013

Program Offshore Energy 2013 15 & 16 October 2013 Amsterdam RAI The Netherlands

Changing societal and stakeholder expectations make social responsibility management an integral part of a business’ strategy. Social responsibility – more commonly referred to as HSSE-SR – encompasses the traditional HSE portfolio but also includes considerations of stakeholder management, community relations and procurement / local content. Although these aspects of SR management are typically associated with onshore production environments – think in particular of densely populated areas but also for example remote areas that cross multiple national boundaries – they are becoming increasingly important for offshore projects as well. A calamity offshore can have far-reaching environmental and societal ramifications. Risk management

No wonder that in a guest editorial in the March edition of Journal of Petroleum Technology, Roland Moreau of ExxonMobil argues that the pursuit of excellence in social responsibility should be seen as a core value of a company, not just a priority. “Priorities change,” writes Moreau, “values do not.” Recent industry incidents underscore the relevance of HSSE-SR. Moreau, who is the HSSE manager for ExxonMobil Research Company, argues that excellent HSSE-SR is key in earning and maintaining a business’ license to operate and with that, its performance. This makes risk assessment and risk management part of everyone’s job. The upcoming edition of Offshore Energy Exhibition and Conference on 15 & 16 October 2013 in Amsterdam

will pay particular attention to advances and best practices in risk assessment and risk management. One of the confirmed speakers is Professor Tinka Murk who is currently developing a decision support model which can be applied in response to a calamity involving oil spills at sea. The research project is part of TripleP@Sea, a major research innovation program of Wageningen UR (University and Research centre) into the smart and sustainable use of marine ecosystems. The decision support model should make it possible to choose the best oil spill response (least impact, cost-effective), making use of site-specific information about ecosystems, economic functions, currents and meteorology. Murk and her team are currently developing a first model taking the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius as a test site. A biologist and toxicologist by training, Professor Murk is also the linking pin between the TripleP@Sea program and the Dutch participation in the C-IMAGE project. The latter is an international project researching the impact of the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Made possible by a grant from BP / the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, the objectives of this research project are to better understand the Deepwater Horizon event, to predict the consequences of another deep-sea blow out in the Gulf of Mexico or elsewhere and to improve the observational and predictive tools available. Murk’s research as part of the TripleP@Sea program can be seen as empirical data collection that complements the monitoring results

by the local American partners and contributes to the more conceptual aspects of the C-IMAGE research project. Murk’s research is revealing some interesting interactions of dispersants and oil with plankton that, according to the first research results, may have unexpectedly altered the fate of the oil during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Offshore Energy Conference delegates can expect to learn about preliminary research outcomes.

TripleP@Sea: Smart use of marine ecosystem services providing sustainable Profit of the Planet for People. TripleP@Sea aims at developing an ecosystem services and marine communities approach in three marine environments that strongly differ in climatological conditions and social context. With this research innovation program Wageningen UR invests in stimulating scientific output, strengthening cooperation within and outside Wageningen UR, enhance innovation to provide an answer/solutions to societal issues and elaborate the possibilities for educating professionals and scientists in the broad field of marine environmental sciences. The three show cases that have been selected are 1) Multifunctional use of platforms at the North Sea (MUPs); 2) Sustainable Arctic developments (Arctic) and 3) Use of biodiversity of the Dutch Caribbean (CN-Statia). Ingenious gas plant at the Maasvlakte Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Major project for both ONE and KCI

In April 2013, Oranje-Nassau Energie (ONE) will start the construction of an ingenious gas plant at the Maasvlakte Rotterdam. Four types of gas will be processed here, coming from the Q16 Maas field in the Southern North Sea. ONE asked KCI to design and engineer this complete new development. Although ONE has a relative long history in the E&P industry, as operators they have just begun.

’It is a special project, one of a kind,” states Peter Nieuwenhuijze, Construction & Engineering Manager at ONE. “The presence of gas in the Q16 Maas field was likely. We successfully demonstrated this with drillings from the Maasvlakte industrial area in Rotterdam into the North Sea in the 3rd quarter of 2011.” First

The Q16 Maas field contains natural high caloric gas with a relatively high gas condensate content. To achieve natural gas export specification for consumers, the propane and butane fractions in the gas have to be separated. This will result in four main export product; natural gas, gas condensate, propane and butane in mixture (LPG). LPG production directly from the natural gas source makes the project special and process relatively complex. It is the first LPG production development of its kind in the Netherlands.

42

2013

Marginal

Besides the process complexity, there is the continuous balance between costs and schedule. Q16Maas is considered a marginal field. Investments however are relatively high and the time frame of the project development is very tight. It is ONE’s ambition to export first gas, condensate and LPG’s in 4th quarter 2013, only 2 years after discovery.

project for both ONE and KCI. It the first time that such an undertaking has been embarked on in the Netherlands. An integrated team of ONE and KCI engineers has been formed and works from KCI’s office in Schiedam. Last year, KCI especially opened a new floor at its headquarter to harbour all KCI and ONE engineers working on this project.

At ONE, engineering is outsourced on a contract basis subject to tender. Edwin van Drunen, Manager Projects at KCI states: “ONE decided to team up with us as they found our proposal commercially the best one. Moreover they already had positive experience with us in the past and like us for being creative in our solutions and for taking an open-minded approach.”

The construction of an onshore plant is quite complex in terms of safety, the environment and the necessary permits. On top of this, the development time for Q16 Maas is tight, so every decision has to be spot on. These decision are taken jointly by the integrated project team.

Integrated team

Both KCI and ONE are positive that this the Q16 Maas project will be finished successfully.

The Q16 Maas development is a major

Purchase of two observation ROVs

Dutch DCN to invest millions in establishing ROV division To fully complete its range of services, the management of Bergen op Zoom-based DCN Diving has decided to officially launch its own ROV division, on 1 March 2013. As from that date, Fred Bosman (40) will take up the position of ROV Operations Manager. Bosman acquired his experience with robotic underwater systems with the Royal Dutch Navy, and for the past 13 years has been employed as ROV supervisor in the offshore oil and gas industry.

diving is in fact a complete taboo. Hence the decision to establish our own fleet of advanced ROVs. This decision will make DCN a complete underwater contractor, which thanks to our own habitats means we are able to successfully execute even the most eye-catching underwater projects, DCN has now purchased two new observation ROVs that can be deployed in a variety of configurations in a wide range of tasks including construction, inspection, installation, repair, recovery and support, The ROVs in question are the Seaeye Falcon DR Observation Class ROV, capable of operating in water depths of up to 1000 metres, and the compact Seaeye Cougar-XT Observation Class ROV for less demanding tasks at a maximum depth of 2000 metres. Both extremely reliable ROVs are equipped with cameras and a full array of measuring equipment and tools to support undersea construction and IRM activities for the oil and gas industry, and the wind energy market. Since the ROV division was launched, two contracts have already been signed. Offshore Director Rob Vriens of DCN Diving, explained: “For saturation tasks offshore, use of an ROV has been an absolute requirement for some time. It appears extremely likely that ever stricter requirements will lead to further intensification of the deployment of ROVs. In a number of projects, 44
