As Managing Director of IRO – the Association of Dutch Suppliers in the Oil- and Gas Industry, I am proud to present you the seventh edition of Offshore Holland!
After a very successful OTC in Houston (more than 100.000 visitors!) and Oil & Gas Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Offshore Europe in Aberdeen will be the next theatre for Dutch suppliers in the Oil- and Gas Industry to present the latest innovations and techniques. This year 30 companies will be part of the IRO Holland Pavilion at Offshore Europe that can be found in Hall 1 and is 100 m2 larger than the pavilion two years ago. The growing demand for energy world wide and the fact that there are still a lot of reserves in sometimes difficult to approach

Topside jacked to a total height of 24 metres
ALE’s Mega Jack completes worlds heaviest jack up ALE, worldwide heavy transportation and lifting, has successfully completed the jack up of the Arkutun Dagi Topside for Exxon Neftegaz at the shipyard of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in Korea. At a final 42,780te this is the heaviest load ever jacked. The topside will eventually be located in the Arkutun Dagi field off the east coast of Russia; the development is expected to be the largest oil and gas production platform in Russia where the first oil is scheduled to be produced next year.

ALE jacked the topside to a total height of 24 metres which is the first project of this kind using its innovative Mega Jack System. To complete the project the Mega Jack was configured in four sets of towers each made of a combination of three singular towers; this gave each of the four towers capacity of 15,000te and an overall jacking capacity of 60,000te. The Mega Jack is a completely computerised and stroke controlled system operated via a control room; it took only 11 hours to complete the lift. The next day DSME concluded the load in and installation of a skid frame (DSF) which the topside was lowered to by the Mega Jack. This was completed the same day. The next phases will see a final weighing of the topside and the load out. The topside on the DSF will be loaded out by a pulled load out using strand jacks to a barge for onward transportation to its final destination. Great achievement
Kees Kompier, executive director at ALE said: “This pioneering project is a great achievement for ALE and the Mega Jack which was created by our research and development team and engineers. The load is nearly double the weight of the previous heaviest load which is a great accomplishment for the company and really shows the capabilities of the Mega Jack. The system itself opens up a whole range of options for our clients and is completely scalable, meaning we can create a system to fit the requirements of projects becoming more flexible in our capacity and solutions.” The Mega Jack which is stroke controlled, establishes stability from its jacking foundation. This means that enormous bracing structures and welding works to the platform for securing stability belong to the past.
As such welding and cutting works at high level are not required and therefore working on height is completely eliminated due to the low level feed-in system for inserting jacking beams. From the central control unit the jack-up operator operates the system by means of the fully computerized control system which includes data logging, weather data and optional dimensional surveys. Founded in 1983 by Roger Harries, ALE delivers a highly tailored, end-to-end service covering every aspect of the handling, transportation and installation of heavy, indivisible loads, including lifting, transporting, installing, ballasting, jacking and weighing. These strategic heavy-lift services are being delivered to a wide range of sectors, including civil, oil and gas, energy, nuclear, offshore,
renewables, petrochemical, ports, marine, minerals and metals and mining. In 2008 ALE launched the AL.SK190, the world’s largest land-based crane, which it developed specifically for the lifting and installation of ultra-heavy loads and which is capable of lifting a record-breaking 4,300te and can be relocated on site fully rigged. And in 2011 the company, with operating centres in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Australia, the Middle East and the Far East, launched its ground breaking innovation - the Mega Jack system- capable of lifting 60,000te to a height of 25m the Mega Jack was developed to meet increasing demand in the offshore industry. Last year ALE announced the building of the next generation AL.SK350 - the latest world’s largest capacity land based crane with a lifting capacity of 5000te.

Aegir: multipurpose deepwater construction vessel
Ideal for deployment in the h field development market
Fitted with an impressive selection of state-of-the-art mission equipment, HMC’s brand-new multipurpose deepwater construction vessel (DCV) Aegir is due to leave the Netherlands in September, en route to her first offshore project in the Gulf of Mexico. This special vessel is capable of executing complex infrastructure and pipeline projects in ultra deep water, while offering sufficient lifting capacity to install platforms in relatively shallow water. Most remarkable is that two oil companies had so much confidence in the capacities of the vessel that they had already contracted the ship for high-tech field development work, long before she had been built and tested.

Prior to designing and fabricating the Aegir, Heerema Marine Contractors undertook extensive studies into the way in which the market for high-tech field development work could best be served. Martijn Wijdeveld, Senior Project Manager responsible for the construction and commissioning of the Aegir commented: “Based on extensive market research it was concluded that the industry would benefit from a vessel which will carry a wide selection of smart technical
innovations. This strategy now offers the industry a deepwater construction vessel which has the functionality of a number of construction vessels in one.” HMC’s Asset Manager Alex Cofino added, “The strength of the Aegir is that the vessel can swiftly switch operational modes, can be rapidly mobilised and is a fast mover, too. The addition of this vessel means that in the future, just one ship will
be required for field development work instead of two or more. Thanks to the use of a smart logistic system with portable reels, huge time savings can also be achieved in Reel-lay operations since the Aegir is no longer required to sail back and forth to the spoolbase on shore. The Aegir is the first ship in the world to make use of this system, but perhaps equally noteworthy is the vessel’s ability to rapidly switch from Reel-laying to J-laying.”

Parallel projects
For the design of the Aegir, the vessel type chosen was a customised Ulstein Sea of Solutions SOC 5000. The construction order was awarded to the DSME yard in Okpo, South Korea. As explained by Martijn Wijdeveld, “We had, in fact, four projects running in parallel. While the vessel was being built at the Daewoo yard, the Huisman yard in China was fabricating the mast crane, Remacut in Italy was building the multi jointing pipe-

handling plant and Huisman in the Netherlands was working on the dual-purpose pipelay tower.” The revolving mast crane, with a lifting capacity of 4,000 mT, was installed on the stern of the vessel, on the starboard side, in South Korea. Following a nineteen-month build, sea trials were organised at the end of 2012, and on 16 January of this year the Aegir set sail for the Netherlands. The Aegir made a short stop at Huisman in China to collect an
empty, 1,000 mT reel, which was hoisted on board using the ship’s own crane. The vessel finally arrived in Rotterdam on 13 March, and soon thereafter was transported to the Huisman yard in Schiedam where the pipelay equipment, including the multi jointing pipe-handling plant and the dual purpose pipelay tower, was installed on board. Once commissioning is completed in early September, the Aegir will be able to set sail for the Gulf of Mexico, for deepwater trials. After their successful completion, the vessel will start on its first order in the Gulf region. Alex Cofino went on, “On behalf of Anadarko, we will be installing risers in 2,000 metres of water in the Lucius Field, as well as flowlines, using the Reel-lay method. The Aegir will then be deployed, next year, to carry out installation and construction work in water depths of up to 250 metres, as part of the Inpex Ichthys LNG project off the coast of Western Australia. I am delighted with the remarkable level of confidence demonstrated by Anadarko and Inpex in the capacities of the Aegir, as both companies contracted the vessel even before she was built and tested.”

Specifications
De Aegir is 211 metres long and 46 metres wide. The transit draft is 8 metres and the operating draft between 9 and 11 metres. For the main propulsion, two 6.5 MW fixedpitch variable speed azimuth thrusters have been installed below the aftership. The vessel is also equipped with a class 3 dp system, for which four 3.2 MW fixed pitch variable speed retractable azimuth thrusters have been fitted, in addition to one 2.5 MW fixed pitch variable speed tunnel thruster in the foreship, which can be used both during manoeuvring in port and for dp operations offshore. The 125 metre-high revolving mast crane built by Huisman, with a footprint of 16 by 16 metres, is capable of lifting loads of up to 4,000 mT with a radius of between 17 and
40 metres, and up to 1,500 mT with a radius of 78 metres. The lifting height is 96 metres above main deck. Using the mast crane, loads can be lowered under water to a depth of 260 metres. The crane block can be divided into two sections, which even makes it possible to stand jackets upright. Another feature of the crane is a smart anti-heeling ballast system, which ensures that the vessel remains vertical during crane operation. Following extensive research and development, a smart twin-winch system has been developed that minimises the oscillation of heavy loads during lifting operations. If work has to be undertaken at even greater depths than 260 metres reach of the mast crane, the combined abandonment and recovery (A&R) and deepwater lowering system
developed by Huisman can be put into action. This system is capable of delivering loads to 3,500 metres water depth and is equipped with active and passive heave compensation. An ROV hangar has been located on both the port and starboard side of the vessel, each equipped with a workclass ROV and a launch and recovery system suitable for water depths of up to 3,500 metres. The innovative pipelay tower, also from Huisman, is used for both J-lay and Reel-lay operations. For J-lay work, pipes with a maximum outer diameter of 32 inches can be laid, at a top tension of 2,000 mT. The maximum capacity for the Reel-lay method is 16 inches outer diameter and 800 mT top tension. A skid system has been mounted on the aftership, which enables the exchangeable reels that

including line pipe can weigh of up to 3,000 mT, to be transferred from starboard to port and accurately positioned behind the pipelay tower. These reels have a diameter of 24 metres. The full reels are loaded at sea on the starboard side, and the empty reels unloaded on the port side. The multi jointing pipe-handling plant is positioned just behind the deckhouse. The plant is currently configured for processing so-called quad joints. These quad joints are prefabricated from four standard 12 metre-long pipe joints. The plant is equipped with workstations for bevelling, welding, weld seam controlling, grit blasting, painting (coating) and as necessary the fitting of anodes. These are transported to the tower via a smart

system, raised to the vertical and installed in the tower. At the bottom of the tower is a welding station. Below this, in the 25 metre-long and 10 metre-wide moonpool, the hang-off unit is installed. Also on deck are a gantry crane and two Dreggen knuckleboom cranes, each with a lifting capacity of 40 mT. The 48 MW power plant, divided between two separate engine rooms, consists of six diesel generator sets each rated at 8 MW. The transit speed is in excess of 12 knots. The Aegir has two bridges. The front bridge is used for sea transport operations from a to b, while the survey, ROV, dp and pipelaying activities are controlled from the rear bridge. On board, the vessel is capable of accommodating 305 people.

How Agility Group improves safety miles from the nearest coast

The failure of a bolted joint not only could lead to catastrophic consequences for personnel and the environment, but also for the bottom line. On crucial bolted joints Agility Group, a Norwegian engineering, procurement and construction company, uses Nord-Lock safety washers – to the delight of its drilling company customers. Confident

From the Gulf of Mexico to the far north of Norway, Agility Group’s PetroFlame burner booms are trusted by drilling companies to safely flare off oil and gas when the pressure in the well reaches dangerous levels. Jutting out some 30 metres from the side of oilrigs and drill ships, these burner booms are battered by wind, sea spray, and subjected to heavy vibrations, fierce sunshine and ice build-up.

Since being introduced to Nord-Lock Group and their wedge-locking products about five years ago, Agility Group has become a loyal customer. And it is not just its own engineers and designers who have come to appreciate performance and reliability of the Nord-Lock wedge-locking technology; their customers – the large drilling companies – do too. “When our clients come to us they are normally going to operate in the northern hemisphere, where they know that the waves and the wind can be pretty harsh,” says Tom Mathisen, Agility Group’s Project Manager Marine Solutions. “They often ask us how we have secured the bolts. When we say that we use Nord-Lock washers, they are confident that everything is okay. They have heard about the Nord-Lock Group around the world and they know what Nord-Lock wedge-locking system is and what it does.
They know they don’t need to worry about bolts coming loose.” Full service
Agility Group is a full service engineering, procurement and construction company specializing in medium-sized projects for the Oil & Gas industry. The company employs more than 1,200 people at ten different locations across Norway and Shanghai. Growing global demand for oil and gas is reflected in the company’s balance sheet; Agility Group expects to double 2011’s revenue of NOK 1.7 billion as soon as 2015, selling to drilling companies like Ensco, Seadrill, Odfjell, Transocean and Stena Drilling. Safety valve
The PetroFlame burner boom is essentially a safety valve and it is categorised as well testing equipment. Mathisen explains: “They are used during drilling of new oil wells or for

testing of an existing one. If the drilling companies experience very high pressure or temperature, and they can’t control the flow of oil or gas, they use the burner boom to flare off the oil or gas.” Agility Group has over the last three decades delivered more than 50 burner booms of various kinds - and all are still in operation. Each burner boom – Agility Group has three models, the Swan-Neck, Cantilever and King Post Mounted PetroFlame – has several hundred bolted joints and for many of the most crucial ones, such as the pipe supports, access platforms and walkways, Nord-Lock wedge-locking system is used. “For the pipe supports we used double
nuts before,” says structural and mechanical design engineer Stian Jenssen. “With Nord-Lock washers we can reduce that to one nut, which makes installation easier and we consider it to be a more secure solution. We try to use them wherever we have vibrations. At the moment we are developing a new burner boom design where we are planning to use Nord-Lock products more or less all over.” Quality
Petter Viken, Nord-Lock’s sales manager for Norway, says that the Oil & Gas sector is growing in importance for Nord-Lock. “For Nord-Lock Norway, the sector accounts for about 90% of our business,” he says. “It’s all about the bolt security that the

products give. Safety is a top priority in the Oil & Gas industry, and although it is a rather conservative sector, the Nord-Lock Group has built up a strong reputation worldwide.” Today Agility Group has much of its production in China, where much of its competition is also found. “We noticed that there are a lot of Chinese copies of Nord-Lock washers there, but we demand the original, of course,” says Mathisen. “It’s a great product. They are more expensive than other solutions, but they are a worthwhile investment. One of our strengths is the quality of our products compared with our competitors’, and Nord-Lock is one thing that helps us ensure the highest possible quality standards.”

The recent global recession had a negative impact on many companies and small businesses, in particular, felt the effects of the economic downturn. But things are beginning to improve, and entrepreneurs are increasingly becoming more optimistic. Fortunately Tideway Offshore Solutions, based in Breda, the Netherlands, was never affected by the recent recession. At no time. “Our forward vision is based on our own independent way of thinking. It is that fact that enables us to move in time with economic and social changes,” explains director Hugo B. Bouvy. “We have always been optimistic about our growth prospects. Tideway Offshore Solutions specialises in constructing landfalls for oil and gas pipelines and is a leading world class contractor in the high-precision rock placement market. The management of the company believes that forward vision creates the possibility of responding flexibly to a range of future market situations. As a full service provider for the oil and gas industry, Tideway Offshore Solutions is now benefiting from parent company DEME’s 2008-2011 1.5 billion euro investment programme, including the fabrication of the state-of-the-art fallpipe rock placement vessel Flintstone. Bouvy, who shares directorship of the company with Lucas Bols: “Analysts advise that this decade may offer the best opportunity for making new investments in pipeline infrastructure. A good example is a project that we have carried out for Subsea 7 on the Total Laggan Tormore field some 140 km North-West of the Shetland Islands. In total we have accurately placed 1.6 million tons of rock in more than 600 m water depth. The project first required the laying of foundations for the installations of the pipelines and later the pipelines themselves were subsequently sealed in position. Launched in 1991, Tideway, a subsidiary of the Belgian company Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering (DEME) Group, focuses its activities on subsea pipelines and cables. Its clients are the largest energy companies and contractors in the world. The company is an expert in landfall construction, scour protection and pre- and post-dredging for the support of pipelaying operations. Power cable installation
Tideway has also the specialised knowledge, experience and techniques that are required for the installation of high voltage marine power cables. The company manages the complete installation process, including route preparation, pre-lay dredging, trenching, cable laying, protection of crossings, and landfalls. Two of the company’s power cable installation assignments are
undisputed world-firsts. Laying the 576 km high voltage NorNed power cable between Norway and the Netherlands was a world record length. Installation of a power cable from the Thornton far-shore wind turbine farm to the continent, and the laying of infield cables between the turbines proper were unseen if only for the distance from the coast, the depth of the sea at the wind farm, and the complexity of fairways, pipelines and telecom- or power cables that had to be crossed. Both projects fit in broader trends. The NorNed cable is an excellent example of linking national grids across sea barriers and opening trading opportunities that did not exist before – in this case between hydro-electrical and fossil fuelled energy. Laying power cables inside and from a far-shore wind farm is equally pioneering. Both trends open up perspectives for similar assignments in the future.

Mid July 2013 Tideway successfully finished a power cable lay project for GDF Suez E&P Nederland in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. The 14 km of cable were installed from the Q13-A Well Protector Platform to the beach near the city of Scheveningen in the Netherlands. Flintstone
As an obvious statement of its confidence in continuing offshore business Tideway took delivery of the fallpipe rock placement vessel Flintstone early 2011. The vessel has a cruising speed of 15 knots and is able to carry out accurate rock placement to a depth of 2,000 m. The 19,000-tonne Flintstone is the third and largest fallpipe vessel to join the Tideway fleet, after the 11,500-tonne Rollingstone and the 17,500-tonne Seahorse. The capability to place rock with high accuracy at an exceptional depth of no less than 2,000 m is a competitive advantage in itself, made possible thanks to a new generation aluminium fallpipe that allows smarter and faster assembly, a highly-sophisticated active heave compensated ROV equipped with four thrusters for forward, backward and sideways movements, and state-ofthe-art survey equipment. To protect the fallpipe from damage by the falling rock, a protective liner of wear-resistant material has been fitted in the aluminium pipe sections. In addition, a further innovation can be found in the 12m-long pipe sections’ connecting joints. A double bayonet closure has been designed that connects the pipe sections to each other by two twists of 90°. Inclined Fallpipe System

is the Inclined Fallpipe System. The IFPS is characterised by separate closed fallpipe sections that are assembled in modules on the afterdeck of a fallpipe vessel. The system then protrudes from the rear of the ship in the form of an inclined pipe, at an angle. Normally speaking, rocks are placed vertically through a pipe directly below the vessel, via the moon pool. In this solution, the rocks are placed through a 55 metre-long pipe with a diameter of 1.20 metres, at which point the rocks are placed at an angle, in the precise location below the platform, in an extremely controlled manner. Using the IFPS, Tideway is able to carry out rock placement work in a seastate of up to 1.5 to 2 metres significant.
Wind Energy
The IFPS is also an ideal tool for installing scour protection for offshore wind farms. For that same market segment Tideway also developed a so-called levelling tool. Suspended beneath the ROV, this tool is capable of creating smooth levelled areas of rock. The levelling tool has already been deployed by Tideway on the Thornthon Bank wind farm project off the coast of Belgium, where a perfectly smooth seabed was required, on which to install the concrete foundations. The tool was also used for the Walney offshore wind farm project in the Irish Sea. At this very moment Tideway is engaged in a rock placement as well as power cable lay project 40 km off the coast of Belgium.

The Northwind wind farm consists of 72 offshore wind turbines and a transformer station in water depths up to 28 meters. The wind farm is scheduled for completion later this year and, with a capacity of 216 MW, it will be able to supply 120,000 households, which is equivalent to a reduction of 240,000 tons of CO2 per year. For 2014 the DEME group has already two major wind farm projects in its portfolio. One is the Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of DONG Energy,where Geosea (also member of the DEME group) ensures the foundation works. The Farm’s site is situated 8 km off the Yorkshire Coast, north of Hull and will contain 35 turbines of 6MW capacity, covering a total area of 35 km2 and providing enough electricity to power around 200,000 homes. The project will help to fulfil the UK’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and will contribute towards the UK achieving its targets of electricity generation from renewable energy schemes. The other project concerns the German Borkum Riffgrund Wind Farm, also owned by Dong Energy. In total 89 3.6-megawatt turbines have to be installed, covering 35 square kilometres. Again Geosea ensures the foundation works and Tideway is responsible for preparing a filter rock foundation and after the installation of the turbines armour rock will be installed around the monopoles with the help of the IFPS. For the coming years Tideway does not have to worry about the utilization of its fleet. “Except for the mandatory maintenance days, we are just full,” says Hugo Bouvy not without pride. “And our field of activity is truly the whole world. Geographically,

business comes from Canada, South America (Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil), Africa (Mozambique), and Australia. And we have also received some very interesting inquiries from the Far East. But also the North Sea is not to be sneezed at. There are new developments going on near the Shetlands, while for the next three years we have a large frame-agreement with Statoil. In addition, we are participating in the FEED study of Allseas and McDermott for Anadarko Petroleum Corporation in Mozambique. Fits perfectly in our partnership strategy. There are a lot of interesting developments going on there.” Heerema’s first
Hugo Bouvy is particularly pleased about getting the first contract from Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC), Leiden, the Netherlands. Earlier this year, HMC awarded Tideway the subcontract for the Wheatstone SGS Foundation Works on Western Australia’s Pilbara Coast. A liquefied natural gas and domestic gas development - designed and constructed by Bechtel for Chevron. Wheatstone was discovered in August 2004 and in March 2008 Chevron announced an intention to develop the gas resource as a greenfield onshore LNG and domestic gas project. The scope of work for Tideway comprises the provision of the rock blanket, solid ballast and scour protection installation. In the context of the work for the new
Wheatstone LNG Project for Chevron in Western Australia, Tideway will level the seabed and install erosion protection measures. This work will be carried out in the first half of 2014. Bouvy: “This ‘first’ for Heerema is really a huge challenge. And it’s especially great to experience how professional the people of Heerema operate. And again in this project our transparent way of communicating works extremely well, and at the same time is effective. A megaproject like this can only succeed if all parties concerned operate from a partnership thought. We explain to the people of Heerema exactly what we do, how we do and why we do it. We also indicate what cannot be done. Then we try to find a solution together. Commissioned by Daewoo Shipping and Marine Engineering, Heerema is responsible for the installation of the platform. Tideway will first create an extremely flat foundation layer. With 30,000 tons of rock. Of course, by using the patented offshore leveling system. Towards the end of this year the fallpipe vessel Flintstone departs for Australia. Currently she is involved in two projects for ExxonMobile on Hibernia South in Canada. In September this year the vessel will sail towards the North Sea for completing a Statoil project and then she set sail for the other side of the globe. The Perla Gas Field is situated in the Cardon IV block in the Gulf of Venezuela and covers about 33 km2. Repsol is the operator of the field and owns a 50% stake. The remainder is held by Eni. Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) owns a 35% back-in right in the development phase. The field lies 90 kilometres off the coast in a water depth of 60 metres. The job involves dredging of a 6.5 kilometre trench at sea and installing
Also in Venezuela, Tideway has obtained additional work for the Venezuelan State Oil Company PDVSA. On behalf of Saipem, Tideway will carry out a landfall on the northern side of the peninsula for the Dragon gas field. The task includes dredging of a trench, building a stone platform and anchoring it in a rock face. The work is planned for autumn 2014.

The company, established in 1981, is a worldwide provider of a broad range of steel pipe materials and appendages including fittings, valves, flanges, well bends and shutoff valves, in a range of materials grades and sizes (see the accompanying delivery programme). The head office of DylanGroup is based in OudBeijerland close to Rotterdam. Alongside a number of ultramodern storage facilities, the head office is also home to a modern production department equipped with a carrousel bench, boring and milling benches and advanced CNC machines regularly used for producing tailor-made specials, one of the DylanGroup’s distinctive characteristics. In the summer of 2010, Dylan took possession of a brand-new European Distribution Centre (EDC) in Roosendaal (in the Province of North Brabant). With 25,000 m2 of warehouse storage and an outdoor site of more than 10,000 m2. In total, Dylan worldwide has approximately 200,000 m2 of storage space.

De Kok continued, “Specifically because we leave no stone unturned on behalf of our customers, a well-oiled logistic operation is vital. We therefore decided in Roosendaal to establish the segmented storage of pipe material, shared across thirteen covered sections. Each section has its own overhead crane enabling us to rapidly pick any orders.” In the outdoor area, the pipe materials are brought together using an extremely manoeuvrable Combilift four-way LPG side loader with a lifting capacity of six tonnes. Successful launch Subsea 7’s Seven Waves Earlier this year IHC Merwede has successfully launched Subsea 7’s 550t pipelaying vessel, Seven Waves, at its shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. Thenaming ceremony was carried out by Mrs Lucia Andrade, the ship’s God Mother and Subsea 7 Brazil’s Vice President Projects & Operations.
The Seven Waves is the fifth vessel contracted by Subsea 7 to IHC Merwede’s Offshore division. The other ships were launched and delivered under the names of: the Seven Oceans (pipelaying); the Seven Seas (pipelaying and construction); the Seven Atlantic (diving support); and the Seven Pacific (pipelaying). Subsea 7 selected IHC Merwede (among others) for this latest vessel due to its efficiency and reliability in delivering all four previous orders on time and meeting the required level of quality. Brazil
IHC Offshore & Marine designed the ship in close cooperation with Subsea 7. She will have an overall length of 146 metres, a beam of 30 metres and a Class-2 dynamic positioning system. The vessel is equipped with a vertical (tiltable) lay system - with 550t top tension capacity - and twin ROVs. She is fitted with two under-deck storage carousels, with a capacity for 2,500t and 1,500t of product respectively. The lay tower can operate at an angle of up to 10° and is fitted with: two tensioners, each with a 275t capacity, which can both be retracted clear of the firing line, and two wire centralisers. The keel-laying ceremony was held one month ahead

of schedule and the delivery of the vessel will be as planned in the first half of 2014. This pipelaying ship will be used to develop deep-sea oilfields of up to 2,500 metres off the coast of Brazil on behalf of Petrobras. Next chapter

Overview converter platform DolWin Alpha

At the fabrication yard of Heerema Fabrication Group in Zwijndrecht the topsides of the DolWin Alpha platform has been built. The platform is 42 meters wide, 62 meters long and approximately 80 meters high (from the waterline to the top of the crane) and weighs more than 10,000 metric tons. After a successful loud out operation the topsides were loaded on a seagoing barge and transported to Schiedam for its final completion, e.g. sea fastening operations and installation of the crane. The next milestone will be the installation of the topsides by the Thialf, at the installation site approx. 75 kilometres offshore in the German North Sea.

In order to integrate ‘green’ electricity from offshore wind farms into the grid, sea and land cables are required to transport electricity. Considering that many wind farm clusters in the German North Sea are located more than 100 kilometres away from the near-estland-based transformer substation, high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) has to be used to integrate the power to the German grid. In the process alternating cur-rent generated by wind turbines is collected in offshore substations (one substation plat-form per wind farm) and then conveyed by AC sea cables to an offshore converter plat-form where it is converted into direct current. Using HVDC this direct current is then transported to land without significant losses, where it is converted back to alternating current in an onshore converter station and is finally fed into the electricity grid in a sub-station.
The 420 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) was manufactured at ABB’s factory in Zurich-Oerlikon.
ABB is responsible for system engineering, including design, supply and installation of the offshore converter, and its platform, sea and land cable systems as well as the on-shore converter station. The HVDC Light system that will be used offers numerous other environmental benefits, such as neutral electromagnetic fields, oil-free cables and compact converter stations and is therefore ideal for connecting remote wind farms. With a rated voltage of 320 kilovolts (kV), the link will have
the highest voltage level of extruded cables ever used for HVDC transmission. The offshore converter platform for the DolWin1 project was built in the fabrication yard of Heerema Fabrication Group in Zwijndrecht. In October 2012 the jacket (which was also fabricated by Heerema, but at their Vlissingen yard) was transported to the installation site. Here the jacket was installed and anchored to the sea bed using the Thialf.

In July 2010 TenneT Offshore awarded a contract to ABB to supply a 800 MW transmission link that will connect offshore wind farms located in the cluster DolWin1 in the North Sea to the German grid. The cluster DolWin1 consists of three wind farms, from which Borkum West II is the first to be connected, delivering 400 MW when it is completely installed. The wind farms will be connected with AC cables to the HVDC converter platform situated in the North Sea and further through 75 km of DC sea cable and 90 km of land cable to the HVDC onshore station at the grid connection point at Dörpen-West. The offshore wind farms belonging to the DolWin1 cluster are expected to avoid 3 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year by replacing fossil-fuel based generation.

Multiple services, singular solutions A.Hak Industrial Services (better known as HIS) provides a range of specialised industrial and inspection services to the petrochemical, refining and pipeline industries, during both plant construction and operational phases. The company’s headquarters are in Tricht, which is in the heart of the Netherlands. “It is important to keep pipelines, storage facilities and every related aspect of an installation in top working order. We assure our customers maximum plant integrity and sustainable operation,” tells Johan Robbe, who has been Managing Director of HIS since 2000. In 2011 he performed his 25-year anniversary at the family company, where he started laying pipes in the Middle East. In 2000, sales at HIS fluctuated between 5 and 6 million euros. Now the turnover is € 42 million. “A reasonable development,” Robbe characterizes the success of the past decade.

A unique niche activity is the online robotic tank inspection, which allows for ultrasonic tank bottom inspection while the tank is still on line. At this very moment HIS owns six different types of robots, each designed according to specific specifications enabling them to cope with different demands. Plus an online tank sludge profiler using an acoustic sensor capable of scanning tank contents with the greatest precision. To complete the only full service package HIS has cleaning equipment which can desludge the tanks without emptying them. Robbe: “As integrity management of tanks is gaining more and more importance globally, this approach to tank inspection is becoming a well-accepted option today. Tank owners can significantly reduce costs by performing API 653 inspections without removing their tanks from service. The robotic system saves money by eliminating high cost of tank downtime, cost of temporary storage, and cleaning costs. It minimizes waste disposal costs, avoids disruptions in plant operations and
reduces environmental risks such as spills and VOC release. Last but not least this type of inspection improves safety by eliminating confined space entry and personnel exposure to hazardous chemicals and can be completed in days instead of weeks.” Added value
HIS started this inspection service in 2010. Actually from a defensive strategy as tank inspection was not part of its scope or services. But the question to inspect fuel increased rapidly and as the strategy of A.Hak has always been to offer a complete integrated service package it was decided to purchase the company activities of InTANK. This USA-based company specializes in the development and application of robotic systems for the in-service inspection and cleaning of above ground storage tanks. The acquisition concerned all activities of InTANK, including all patents, trademarks and technology rights. “At HIS we have extensive experience in the inspection and maintenance of pipelines worldwide, so the move into the inspection of tanks fitted very well into our strategy,” reports Johan Robbe. “By combining the outstanding, leading edge technology of InTANK and the worldwide presence of A.Hak,

normal pigging techniques impossible. A.Hak Industrial Services has been active in the field of non-piggable pipeline inspection since the mid 90s and has developed specialised tools, methods and equipment to allow inspection of even the most challenging non-piggable pipelines.
Pipelines have been laid worldwide for many years, and more often than not, once operational, are left without any planned maintenance and their internal condition often remains unknown. The normal management approach has been to prioritize on a failure consequence basis, selecting maintenance and inspection options on a failure mode and effect analysis. But policies have changed over the years. As uptime becomes increasingly precious, replacement increasingly expensive and external and internal integrity demands more stringent, inspection of these lines has become more important. All over the world. The problem nowadays is that at the time many pipelines were laid, pigging and inspection services were not considered. This means that the majority of these pipelines were built without launching/receiving facilities, were of varying diameters and contained mitred bends, making

Simultaneously, the centralised set-up of the UT-head allows measurement of the pipeline’s geometry, detecting any deformation, like dents and buckles, easily. This is critical when third-party damage may be applicable.” For the inspection of short pipe sections without the need for temporary pigging and pumping equipment, HIS has developed a hand-fed, push-pull system, which can be applied with minimum downtime and yield results instantly.

Challenge
A loyal customer using this service is Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO). In 2012 it has awarded a new major contract to the Middle East Subsidiary of A.Hak Industrial Services again. This new award is a five year contract which consists of de-oiling, cleaning and inspecting 116 non-piggable oil pipelines using the UT Piglet in the major fields of Zakum and Umm Shaif, located offshore Abu Dhabi. Adma-Opco is one of the national oil companies located in Abu Dhabi, and the project awarded is part of a major subsea integrity campaign. Robbe: “This project is a big challenge for us and Adma-Opco due to the number of non-piggable pipelines with limited water source for pigging and even bigger as Adma-Opco is looking to achieve this contract within a maximum period of three years. The execution of the contract will require two independent pigging teams for each field, alongside two independent pumping spreads to allow work in parallel and to achieve Adma-Opco Inspection target for this year. In total we have 65 men on site.” HIS Middle East has been very active in the past eight years in the same field of

activities for ADMA-OPCO and other local oil companies. Nitrogen
HIS also supplies a range of services to the oil and gas industry in which nitrogen plays an important role. The removal of residues from pipelines, the cooling down of reactors and the safe and efficient tracing of leaks are just a few example applications. To carry out these various orders, HIS maintains tanks containing 45,000 litres of liquid nitrogen. One of the most important characteristics of nitrogen is the fact that it does not react with other substances. In other words, nitrogen is inert. For example when the pipelines at a refinery have to be cleaned, they contain a variety of hazardous and flammable residues. Purging the pipelines through the
addition of nitrogen enables these residues to be burned off safely, via a flare. The massive cooling effect of nitrogen is also employed by HIS in the cooling down of reactors. Clients happily make use of this application when the catalysts in the reactors have to be replaced. If nitrogen is used, the cooling down of the reactors takes just two days. Without the addition of nitrogen, it may take up to a week before the reactor has cooled sufficiently. Over the past few years, HIS has undertaken numerous nitrogen projects, for example at a BP refinery in Germany, an LNG Terminal in Zeebrugge, Belgium, and an oil pipeline in France. Adriatic
Another startling nitrogen project that was recently conducted is the Adriatic LNG Terminal, the first ever offshore
Gravity Based Structure (GBS) for unloading, storing and regasifying Liquefied Natural Gas. Owned by ExxonMobile and built in Spain. Located offshore of Porto Levante, in the northern Adriatic Sea, the terminal has a regasification capacity is of 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year (775 million cubic feet per day), or approximately 10 percent of Italy’s current natural gas requirements. The terminal is a strategic infrastructure for Italy as it opened a new gas route totally independent of the pipelines, thus representing a remarkable step towards the diversification and supply of energy supplies. HIS was asked to test all systems on board at the yard in Cådiz and on location in the Adriatic Sea. Including the execution of all necessary repairs.

New series of large offshore cranes Huisman, the worldwide specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, recently introduced a new series of large offshore cranes. The new series include cranes with lifting capacities ranging up to 900mt and have been developed to meet the increasing demands of the offshore construction and subsea market. Multiple unique features have been incorporated in the design, which makes these sophisticated cranes suitable for operations in ultra-deep water but also in harsh marine environments. Two orders for the new cranes have been received already.

The new offshore crane series have been based on the successful 200/400mT Offshore Mast Crane of which 15 pieces have been sold so far. The series include the following new cranes; a 300mT/600mT AHC Subsea Crane and a 450mT/900mT AHC Subsea Crane. Anti-twist
The main hoist of the new cranes will be outfitted with either a 300mT or 450mT traction winch. A storage winch will be placed in the hold of the vessel to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. This winch can either store 200mT, 400mT or 600mT of wire rope. The wire rope can be reeved into two falls to achieve the maximum

capacity. “Our intensive research and the operational feedback from our clients have convinced us not to use single fall for these cranes. Besides the obvious handling problems with very large diameter wire ropes, the short life span results in tremendous operational expenditures for the operator,” says Sales Manager Gerben Roks. For this reason, Huisman has developed a patented anti-twist device to mitigate the risk of the twisting of lower block and wire rope (‘cabling’) during subsea lifts in double fall configuration. AHC
Heave compensation on the main hoist is achieved by using a combined
active and passive system. The passive part allows for a significant increase in the weather window since it reduces the dynamic loading on the crane during splash zone lifts up to 50%. Further, it includes built-in redundancy since the passive system is fail-safe. The active part allows for an excellent active heave compensation performance at a low power consumption. This type of AHC system also largely mitigates the wear and tear on the wire rope compared to traditional AHC systems since there is no drum crushing or wire rope cut-ins on the winch and the number of sheaves is minimized. Further all sheaves have a diameter ratio of 25 compared to the wire rope. First order
The first order was received from the VARD (former STX OSV) shipyard in Norway. The 900 metric ton AHC subsea crane will be installed on a 161 m offshore subsea construction vessel (OSCV) for the Norwegian Owner DOF Subsea. The second crane, a 600 metric ton AHC subsea crane, will be installed on a new 160m DP3 Heavy Construction and Flexible Pipelay Vessel for Subsea 7. The vessel will be built by the Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI).

Joe Bekker, President at Thrustmaster of Texas
‘I believe in sustainable products’ A successful, self-made Dutchman in the United States of America, that is how Joe Bekker, president at Thrustmaster of Texas Inc., can be described. Bekker arrived in Houston over three decades ago and has since built up a successful company with 350 employees which nowadays has offices in the U.S., the Netherlands, Dubai, China, Brazil and Singapore with India as the most recent addition.
Thrustmaster is a manufacturer of heavy duty commercial marine propulsion systems and thrusters with a focus on the offshore industry. “However, on a small scale we also deliver to the shipping industry and we are also still involved with the navy, where it all once started,” says Bekker. After finishing his BSc Mechanical Engineering at the Technical College of Amsterdam, Bekker started his career in the Netherlands. “I have always been interested in working internationally, though. The Netherlands is not so big, so I considered moving to South Africa and I also received an offer for Iran. However, I was more attracted to Houston and I seized the opportunity when I was asked to move there. At that time, I worked for Byron Jackson - nowadays that is Flowserve - and they needed a sales representative in Houston, where they already had a service centre. Against the advice of my friends and family, I sold my house and let our names be removed from the Dutch register, although the assignment was initially only for two years. I was already considering to stay there longer.”

“Houston was an amazing place to be in the 1970s,” Bekker continues. “There was no other possibility but to be successful, business was to be found everywhere, new companies popped up like daisies and engineers were highly in demand. I worked with pleasure at Byron Jackson in Houston, they sponsored me to receive a green card, but after 2.5 years I took the opportunity to start my own business, International IMS. I represented European manufacturers, also from the Netherlands, in the U.S. as an agent to sell their equipment, which I shipped, directly from the manufacturer to the job site of a company worldwide. My business was going well, but my needs to give expression to my creative side were not satisfied, I also wanted to manufacture. The possibility to do so arose when I signed a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deliver propulsion units for a barge to be used for maintenance works at the locks of the three rivers that join together in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a trader, I had planned to buy the propulsion units in Germany and resell them to my client. However, the supplier seemed to have vanished and I found myself without my ordered products.
I tried to find another supplier, but they were all too expensive, which made me decide to ask the army to withdraw their order. It turned out that you cannot break a contract with the army though, or otherwise you will be penalised and placed on a black list so you will never be able to sell anything to the American government again. Therefore I decided to manufacture the units myself, as it was a great opportunity to get into manufacturing. Of course, in the beginning it was difficult, as the manufacturing costs were higher than the sales price, but it was good fun and it worked out well.” And so Thrustmaster of Texas was born. Continuous improvement
The unit that Bekker sold to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1984 is still in use to this day. “It is an issue of philosophy: I believe in sustainable products and a culture of quality and continuous improvement. Since the first one, we have had five upgrades of the design of that model, you cannot compare the current ones with the ones at that time. The first units I engineered myself and they were podded hydraulic units. They were different from the existing units, quite revolutionary one might say, as the propeller shaft is directly driven
by a hydraulic powerpack. The business of our clients is to operate ships. They have a fleet that needs to be continuously in service. If there is a problem with the vessel, it cannot work, which means no income for our client. Therefore it is important that our products function without interruption and continue to function for 20 to 30 years.” “That is my vision on continuous improvement. We constantly stay in close contact with our clients to hear what issues they might have with our equipment, so we can continue to improve it. To give an example: some smaller thrusters get fishing lines in their seal. We already use rope guards and cutters, but that is not always good enough. Of course, we could say that, as a manufacturer, we do not have any influence on these lines in the water, but that is not the way we work. Our philosophy is to think with the client. These lines interrupt our equipment, so we need to improve our products to prevent further problems. If someone buys a drill bit, he does not buy the drill because he wants to own a drill bit but because he needs to make a hole in his wall. So we look at what the client’s goal is and respond to that. As a supplier, you need to be your client’s partner.”

Safe and healthy
The worldwide offshore industry is relatively unaffected by the economical crisis and with a focus on offshore and operating internationally, neither is Thrustmaster. Bekker: “Of course there were some orders annulled because some clients had to cancel their projects. However, the offshore industry still offers a lot of jobs and it is difficult to find good people in Houston, especially engineers and qualified craftsmen. This also affects Thrustmaster, we get people from northern states to Houston to fill the vacancies, of course with a relocation package. There is such a shortage of people for the huge offshore industry in Houston, we all fish in the same waters. I see it as our strength that we really work as a team. In some states, a big difference is made between blue collars and white collars; at Thrustmaster, that is definitely not the case. In our organisation, everyone has the same goal and there are no differences between employees. We offer our people a working environment that is safe and healthy and where people like to go to work. Just to give some examples: Houston gets really hot in summer time, so our factory is air-conditioned. We designed our factory ourselves, so we have excellent lighting, it is clean and organised. Our equipment is of excellent quality. We have to compete with factories in China and India, but our strength lies in our productivity and our automation. The more work a machine can do, the more efficient our work is.” In-house
All of Thrustmaster’s products are developed in-house by an engineering department comprising mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic design. Tooling includes computerised machining and measuring equipment with software packages for

Computer-Aided-Design (CAD), vessel resistance and propulsion, 3-D mathematical modelling and ANSYS Finite Element Analysis (FEA). “We distinguish ourselves from our European competitors, who hire subcontractors for their components, whereas we build all components ourselves. We weld them, cut them, process them and fit the components before assembling,” says Bekker with pride. “That gives us several advantages: we make the configuration ourselves and can control that, which means we are able to change things quickly and effectively, we have good control over the cost price and the delivery time is in our own hands, we do not depend on third parties. All these advantages also make it possible to invest more in special tooling to reduce costs.” Expansion
Thrustmaster is currently expanding its manufactory facilities on the land that lies behind the current factory. Bekker comments: “Late 2013 we plan to have our own coating factory ready to be able to blast and paint our own products. Our products become bigger and bigger, which also means that the logistics become more and more
complex, expensive and difficult. Our own coating factory means advantages regarding logistics and quality control. Another plan for the future is to look at a factory for smaller units, as our current factory is focussed on big thrusters. This means that building small thrusters has a negative effect on their cost price.” Ambition
Bekker definitely does not lack ambition: “Of course we have the ambition to become the leading thruster manufacturer in the world. We have grown extensively over the last couple of years and we want to continue to grow. Our goal is to become the best and biggest supplier of thrusters worldwide, so we continuously raise the bar. Our biggest competitor is Rolls Royce and we want to become bigger than they are. And of course, we want to continue improving our products and our organisation. However, there should always be new challenges and goals to chase when the current goals are reached. Norgron Pipeline Project for Wagenborg Nedlift

1781 pipelines of different sizes and diameters were transported with two large seagoing vessels from the production yard in China to the Wagenborg Stevedoring Terminal in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Offloading was done with the port cranes, equipped with special tools for the handling of the precious cargo. Heavy duty vehicles took the cargo to its temporary lay down area, already prepared with the System 88 pipeline storage system, a dedicated system for the storage of vulnerable isolated pipeline pieces. By the end of April 2013, all 1781 pipeline pieces were delivered justin-time along the new pipe line route by Wagenborg Nedlift. During 15-20 weeks, daily traffic will take place along prepared and safe routes, avoiding villages and bike routes to ensure safety for all parties involved. For these transports, Wagenborg Nedlift works in accordance with the highest safety standards and newest guidelines for load securing.

NorgroN Project Dutch NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij B.V.) is constructing a new natural gas pipeline between the Groningen gas field and the UGS facility in Norg (20 km south of Groningen city). During harsh winter conditions, demand for natural gas strongly increases. To support the gas supply from the Groningen gas field in these circumstances, extra gas is provided from the Norg UGS facility. In order to meet future natural gas demands, the Norg UGS facility will be extended. As a result, a new gas supply pipeline of 30 kilometres has to be constructed in order to transport a larger amount of gas from the Groningen field to the Norg UGS facility.

Joint company called Bigroll
Biglift and Rolldock join forces in modular cargo mar Early May global heavy lift and transportation providers BigLift Shipping and RollDock Shipping announced the formation of a joint company, BigRoll, which will operate two newbuild MC-Class Module Carriers for the transportation of ultra large and heavy modular cargoes by sea. The Module Carriers will be available end of 2014 / beginning of 2015.
BigRoll will build two Module Carriers, designed with a focus on short loading and discharging times, high service speed and low accelerations. The vessels will have DP2 and Finnish Swedish 1A ice class notations. The overall length of the MC-Class is 169 m, beam is 42 m, providing the vessels with a deck space of 42 by 125 m. Maximum deadweight of the MC-Class is 22,500 mT. To offer deck space as large and flexible as possible

the main decks are completely free of manholes, air heads etc. Loading and discharging can be done over vessels’ stern or side by ro-ro or skidding. To minimize loading and discharging time the ballast capacity of the vessel is 12,000 m3/hr. The Module Carriers are not semi-submersible. The combination of expertise of BigLift and RollDock, who share the same core values in QHSE and

Damen introduces Arctic Modular Towing Supply Vessel concept
First veritable ‘double-bow’ vessel Earlier this year, five Maritime Engineering bachelor students of the Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) finished their Minor on Arctic Engineering. In cooperation with Damen Shipyards Group and other partners this project has now resulted, amongst others, in a new Arctic vessel: the Damen AMTSV (Arctic Modular Towing Supply Vessel). The 100 metre double acting supply ship is capable of operating in the Barents Sea year round and in the Baffin Bay and Beaufort Sea for eight months. The AMTSV has the ability to sail through 1.6 metres of level ice at three knots.

The Toptrack programme of Delft University of Technology offers students the unique opportunity to organise their own Minor and fill it up with master courses. In this particular case students Reiner Bos, John Huisman, Martijn Obers, Tobias Schaap and Max van der Zalm organised their own Arctic Minor. ‘Not taking the easy way out’, was an often heard quote while looking for a subject. One of the least easy

challenges in Maritime Engineering seemed to be the Arctic, where a harsh climate hampers all operations and the danger of ice lurks at all times. As it appeared that the Aalto University in Helsinki (Finland) offered several courses on ice, they were included in the project. Five partners
combined project of shipbuilder Damen, risk management and classification company DNV, Dutch hydrodynamics and nautical research institute Marin and the two universities. The goal: the design of a new Arctic Offshore Support Vessel by combining the skills of all partners into a complete view on shipbuilding, from design to delivery.

First, a literature study was carried out, to get an overview of the environment, the market and the geography in the Arctic and to create an operational profile for the vessel. Second, a comparison study was held, testing three existing Damen vessels on their Arctic capabilities. The third stage consisted of a ship design, combining the experiences of the Arctic Minor Team into one innovative concept, launched at January 31st 2013. Two bows
The Arctic Modular Towing Supply Vessel (AMTSV) is capable of operating in Arctic waters for eight to twelve months, depending on the specific region. The vessel actually has two bows; when she sails through open water the accommodation will be in the front. Through ice however, she will sail with her thrusters first. The ‘stern first’ concept is not new in arctic shipping. However, in this case it’s a veritable ‘double-bow’ vessel, a concept which is incorporated in the structural lay-out of the ship. This means the AMTVS could be classed as such.
The AMTSV can handle up to 1.6 m of level ice at a speed of three knots. The research showed this to be an optimal solution, because the shape of an ice bow is completely different compared to an open water bow. When using two bows no compromises have to be made. Another argument for this concept is that, while sailing through ice, the thrusters will create a flow around the hull which decreases friction. Because the vessel can sail in both directions, she also has to be capable of towing in both directions. Hence a double acting winch of 300 tonnes is installed. This winch is installed inside the accommodation so the harsh weather will not affect it. No compromises on crew conditions are made, by allowing the crew to work in the Enclosed Superstructure (ESS) located behind the conventional superstructure. This superstructure can be kept up above zero degrees with an outside temperature of -55 degrees. The ESS is not only useful for the crew, but temperature sensitive cargo can also be kept in this area.
External LNG storage
This Arctic concept vessel will be running on Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), with Dual Fuel engines, in an effort to make it more environmentally friendly. The main disadvantage of LNG is that it requires a lot of storage capacity. However, ice strengthened vessels have a lot steel weight in the hull compared to open water vessels and this means that the centre of gravity is relatively low. Therefore the disadvantage is negated by placing the LNG tanks on top of the ESS. Innovation
Altogether this project is a fine example that the motivation of students, supported by open-minded universities and the partnering companies, can lead to the creation of a substantial and innovative project. The Arctic Minor project taught the team about cooperation, working in a foreign environment and most of all Arctic shipbuilding. For its part, Damen will incorporate their research into its own, on-going Arctic research programme.

In January 2012 DGI announced the acquisition of Wilmax Control Systems Ltd., a Singapore based engineering company specialising in control automation, valve automation and process packages for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. In a press release CEO Juul IJzermans said this acquisition was a significant step in DGI’s plans to develop market leadership in these rapidly expanding sectors and confirmed it will give DGI a strong foothold in the fast developing economies of South East Asia, and will provide its clients worldwide anexcellent portal to state of the art control and actuation systems supported by a dedicated service team. Houston-based Logan Industries in November 2012. Logan is an integrated engineering and manufacturing company, which focuses on heavy hydraulic equipment for the offshore oil and gas industry. As from that moment DGI has businesses in each of the three geographic hubs for the oil and gas industries, including a presence in the strategically important Gulf of Mexico region which is home to a large segment of the global offshore and gas industry. Additionally, Logan’s expertise in subsea and deep water equipment will reinforce Doedijns’ competitive advantage in Europe. Specialties
Logan is known as an expert in deep water solutions with specialties that include hydraulic design, field assistance and repair capabilities. In addition, Logan has a wide range of proprietary solutions for specific applications such as winches, launch and recovery systems, heave compensation systems and Compensated Coil Tubing Lifting Frames. One of its remarkable innovations is the ‘Deep Water Soft Rope Traction Winch’. In deep water applications, as payloads get heavier, using wireline becomes unsafe and difficult to handle. To stay within industry approved guidelines for safety, something else must be used. The engineers of Logan Industries developed a solution to this challenge with the use of synthetic rope and its Deep Water Soft Rope Traction Winch. Synthetics have advanced to the point where their characteristics are similar to wire rope, but because a HMPE rope is neutrally buoyant, safety margins are maintained. With the use of Synthetics, the entire handling system gets smaller. Offshore Holland spoke with Martijn Schols, Business Development

Around 2009 Logan Industries delivered the very first Soft Rope Deep Water Traction Winch for the Shell Perdido Spar platform operating in the Gulf of Mexico. When Shell was designing the Perdido platform’s subsea asset deployment and retrieval system, it faced a problem: at water depths up to 3000 m, a traditional wire rope drum winch system would be too heavy for the platform on which it was to rest. A revolutionary new winch/rope system was needed! The Perdido Spar is part of the world’s deepest oil production facility. It is the most remote producing platform in the Gulf, almost 320 km off the coast of Texas, and the only development in the region to use subsea separation and boosting equipment. The development features 22 wells and 13 more well tie-backs, which must be changed out and serviced at regular intervals. Rather than deploying offshore service vessels to the remote development at great expense, the Perdido Spar’s design includes a winch system allowing the platform to service the subsea equipment itself. However, operating in 2742 meter of water while handling payloads of up to 43 mT dry weight can be a challenge. Compounding the problem, the Perdido Spar design places the winch on a cantilevered deck (a smaller deck extending out from the main

Having the winch installed on the spar means Shell avoids hiring costly vessels to manage the deployments around the rig site. This solution would not have been possible with a steel wire system.
After soliciting several proposals, Shell chose Samson’s Quantum-12 synthetic rope on a Logan Industries traction winch to solve the problem. It marked the first time Shell had used a synthetic rope system on a spar platform. Quantum-12 provides the same strength as the similarly sized wire rope. Synthetics offer superior bend fatigue properties than steel wire rope at smaller bends ratios. The feature allowed Logan to design the winch system with a smaller

To date the winch has made more than 300 runs down to over 2500 metres without any problems. Winch and rope are still in perfect condition with normal wear and tear and no internal abrasion.” Optimistic
Martijn Schols is optimistic about the future for the innovative soft rope winch system. “There is unquestionably a rising interest in the system. Certainly where it concerns working in a deep sea environment. The huge cost savings realized by Shell is obviously also extremely attractive for other parties. What matters now is which contractor decides first to follow the progressive example of Shell. We are currently consulting with a number of interested parties and I expect to have sold a second system before the end of 2014.

Phase 3 of the Malampaya project
Boskalis to use Barge Master system Barge Master, located in Capelle aan de IJssel, the Netherlands, has received a Letter of Award from Boskalis International for employment of the Barge Master motion compensated platform during phase 3 of the Malampaya project. The Barge Master system will be used during the second half of 2014 for the installation of a permanent bridge between a newly installed depletion compression platform (DCP) and an existing shallow water gas production platform (SWP).

The Malampaya project will be executed by Boskalis for Shell Philippines Exploration and comprises the installation of an offshore depletion compression platform at the Malampaya gas field, in the Republic of the Philippines. The new multi-purpose construction DP2 vessel Ndeavor plays a pivotal role in this project. During phase 3 the Barge Master system will be placed on the Ndeavor. The permanent bridge which is to be installed between the two platforms will be loaded onto the Barge Master platform and sailed out to the project location.
Once on site, the bridge will be held still by the Barge Master in order to be lifted off safely by two temporarily installed lifting arrangements. Barge Master develops and produces wave compensation platforms for the marine and offshore industry. Motion compensation platforms for cranes or supply barges are typical examples of Barge Master applications. The T700 Barge Master can carry a 400mT crane, or, alternatively, compensate loads up to 700mT when used as a supply platform.

First EPCI project for Total in Gabon

The Jascon 31 was involved in the start-up of the largest Turret Moored FPSO of BP in Angola on Block 31.
Founded in 1977, by Dutchman Jacques J. Roomans, as a small chartering business in Nigeria, Sea Trucks Group (STG) has steadily grown into an international group of companies delivering offshore installation, accommodation and support services to the oil and gas industry in key markets worldwide. STG builds, owns and manages a large and versatile fleet of marine construction and support vessels, presently consisting of five DP3 vessels (delivered in the past two to six years) each with slightly different specifications but with the ability to interchange between the accommodation, pipelay and heavy lifting market segments. In addition to this, the company also owns and manages a diverse fleet of over 170 small vessels and barges providing logistical support to national and international clients along the West African coastline.
Apart from an extensive presence in West Africa and operations in China to support the group’s newbuild vessel construction, STG has supporting offices in the UAE and the Netherlands, a project execution office in Australia to support the group’s activities in the Asia Pacific region and a representative office in Houston, USA.

Over the last five years STG has completed a great number of accommodation and heavy lift contracts, mainly in the West Africa and Asia Pacific regions. Both DP3 accommodation vessels Jascon 28 and Jascon 30 have been performing accommodation services in Angola and Nigeria for

Connecting a DP3 vessel permanently to a Turret Moored FPSO was an exceptional challenge, which STG managed to perform by turning the DP system for enhanced follow target mode. The vessel accommodated more than 400 personnel in addition to the marine and catering personnel.

SURF and Pipelay
Although many oil majors and contractors are familiar with the outstanding performance of Sea Trucks Group’s DP3 vessel fleet in the accommodation market, the group’s SURF and pipelay installation capability is not so widely known. The group however has successfully completed various SURF and pipelay projects in Australia, West Africa and the Gulf of Mexico from 2009 onwards. Early 2010 STG completed a SURF project in Western Australia with its Jascon 25. The project was awarded to Seastream JV (a JV with Wellstream Int.). Project Management and Engineering was approximately 160,000 man hours over the project duration, while the installation campaign totaled over 200 vessel days, including three mode changes between mooring, structures and flexible/umbilical installation campaigns. During the offshore phase of the project Seastream JV installed and pre-commissioned the FPSO turret and mooring system, 7 subsea manifolds (40 – 160 mT hook weight), 4 mid-water arches (730 mt hook weight), flowlines (55 km) and risers and umbilicals (24 km). In Nigeria West African Ventures, the group’s 100% Nigerian operating company, executed various pipe lay and installation projects. One of which was for Chevron on the Escravos Gas Project Phase 3A (EGP3A), comprising 24” import and export pipelines,
installation of risers and spools as well as beach pulls of two pipelines. Project management and engineering activities were entirely executed by the West African Ventures office in Lagos. These projects were executed by Jascon 30 and Jascon 2 for the shallow water installation. In 2012 Sea Trucks completed its first EPCI project for Total in Gabon. The project consisted of the design, procurement and installation of a 32 km, 18” pipeline between existing platforms in the Torpille and Anguille fields. Engineering works included the design endorsement, detailed design and installation engineering of the pipeline, risers, spoolpieces, riser clamps and Riser Protection Frame and was performed in-house. The offshore programme was split into two phases, with phase 1 consisting of flare boom removal, crossing installation, rigid pipelay and post-lay survey operations and phase 2 of riser clamps
and riser installation, spoolpiece installation and tie-in at each end of the pipeline, installation of the Riser Protection Frame and final hydro testing and commissioning. All operations were performed by the group’s DP3 installation vessel Jascon 34, with air diving and ROV systems used to complete the subsea works. After this project Jascon 34 moved to Mexico where it is presently in the process of executing the AKAL project for Pemex in the Gulf of Mexico together with partner Tradeco. This workscope exists of the installation of 3 pipelines between the AKAL platforms, installation of spoolpieces, procurement and installation of platform extensions and process equipment, pressure testing and pre-commissioning. The offshore campaign, covering a period of approximately nine months is still in process and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2013.

Changing industry fundamentals and changing business models are leading themes of the second annual Industry Panel, a key feature of Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference in Amsterdam on 15 and 16 October 2013. John Andrews, consultant editor with the aforementioned weekly, The Economist, moderates the Industry Panel. Bringing together C-level representatives in upstream oil and gas, the Panel aims to create an outlook by and for the industry. That will be no easy task. One has only to look at shale gas production in the US - the incredible growth of which was foreseen by no one - to realize that a forecast reigns until overtaken by reality. The growing role of national oil companies (NOCs) is another case in point. In the 1950s, the seven sisters (Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Esso, Mobil, SoCal, Texaco, Gulf Oil) controlled approximately 85% of global oil reserves. Today,
over 90% of reserves are under the control of national oil companies. NOCs also spend exceedingly more on E&P as well as on R&D. According to Deloitte, a consultancy and knowledge partner of the Offshore Energy Industry Panel, NOC acquisitions of E&P companies reached an all time high of USD 112.6 billion in 2012, constituting 45% of total E&P mergers and acquisitions. The supermajors, are responsible for only 25% of capital spending in E&P, writes The Economist. Drilling & Dollars
NOCs not only have access to most of the reserves (oil as well as gas), they also have a clear advantage over international oil companies (IOCs) and independents when it comes to raising capital. They often have access to capital from their national governments and in the equity and debt market can agree on much better terms than an average oil company. Three of the
largest NOCs (PetroChina, Rosneft and Petrobras) raised more than USD 27 billion of debt in the first half of 2012, compared with about USD 10 billion for the five largest IOCs ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, BP and Chevron. Today, against the backdrop of the financial crisis, IOCs, independents and service companies are looking for alternative funding solutions. The Drilling & Dollars Panel, the first meeting of its kind in the Netherlands, will discuss challenges in project financing as well as reserve based lending and the latest cutting edge financing solutions. Human Capital
There is one thing that all industry players have in common. NOC, IOC, independent or service company, each faces the prospect of a technical talent shortage. Companies will have to fill the gap of an aging workforce facing retirement and at the same time overcome the low influx of engineers

during the 1980s and 1990s. The Human Capital Panel, a new feature of Offshore Energy, will address the impact of the current human capital scarcity on the industry, particularly the offshore. Invited panelists will discuss solutions of individual companies as well as industry-wide initiatives and the role of government and education. That governments bear responsibility to promote working in the energy industry is clear – access to energy is the sine qua non for economic growth. What governments can do is far less clear. In The Netherlands, the national government, regional governments and a host of industry associations recently concluded a ‘pact’ on technical education. Key agreements: technical education should be taught at all elementary schools in 2020. An investment fund will be set up to promote technical education, to provide technical scholarships and to increase tutor’s technical knowledge.
While the Dutch Techniekpact has no particular industry focus, the need for technical talent in oil and gas cannot be overstated. As exploration and production activities become ever more complex, a new generation of engineers is required, in operations as well as in R&D. The same article in The Economist reports on the vast sums of money spent in R&D. The oil supermajors invested USD 4.4 billion in research and development in 2011. Five of the biggest NOCs (Statoil, Lukoil, Petrobras, PetroChina and Sinopec) even out-invested them, spending USD 5.3 billion. And the big four integrated subsurface service providers – Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes and Weatherford invested another USD 2.3 billion.

Seawater as a drive mechanism
Successful subsea installation with IHC Waterhammer IHC Hydrohammer, part of IHC Merwede, has successfully used seawater – instead of oil as a drive mechanism for the offshore installation industry. The company has developed and tested IHC Waterhammer technology to prepare it for launch to the market.
This sustainable product development minimises potential oil spill hazards in the marine environment and presents new opportunities for deep-water offshore pile driving that will be beneficial to the future growth of offshore construction. The S-90W IHC Waterhammer has been utilised in conjunction with Swiber Offshore Construction. The installation contractor used the advanced pile-driving hammer to install four foundation piles on the subsea PLEM (pipeline end manifold) located approximately 210km off the west coast of Mumbai, India. The Ø 1.1m piles were successfully driven into the seabed to highlight that both the S-90W and S-500W IHC Waterhammers are now ready to be used in the offshore oil and gas industry. “Swiber is proud to be the first offshore company to have successfully tested the seawater-driven S-90W IHC Waterhammer,” says Francis Wong, Swiber’s Group Chief Executive Officer and President. “The IHC Waterhammers provide the same level of efficiency as conventional IHC Hydrohammers and serve as an environmentally friendly alternative. Indeed, we would like to congratulate IHC Hydrohammer on this successful test and look forward to using these products again in the future.”

A complex project with a great many challenges
KCI designs unique onshore gas development plant Commissioned by and in association with Oranje Nassau Energie (ONE) and working to a very short deadline, the consulting engineering firm KCI in Schiedam has designed a unique gas development plant. After completion, this plant will process gas extracted from the Maas field just off the coast in the Q16a block. What is different about this plant is that besides condensate, useful LPG products such as butane and propane, will be separated from the gas ow. Offshore Holland visited Schiedam to take a look and interview some of the people directly involved in the project.

Engineers company KCI became involved in the development of the marginal Maasveld gas field in 2011. Drilling towards this gas field, which lies roughly three kilometres in a north-westerly direction out on the North Sea, began from the Maasvlakte in June of that year. The gas reservoir was reached at a depth of about 2.5 kilometres in the third week of August. This was followed shortly thereafter by extensive production testing. Further to an evaluation of the data that this provided, it was concluded that the gas field has sufficient potential for development and could be economically developed. The volume of gas that can be extracted has been estimated at 820 million cubic metres of high calorific gas, with a lot of condensate. The partners in the project are Oranje-Nassau Energie(ONE), who will be the operator, TAQA, Energy 06 and Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), which represents the Dutch state. ONE issued the tender for the design, procurement of the necessary materials and equipment, and the construction of a gas development plant on the Maasvlakte. Based on knowledge, skill and competitive pricing, the assignment for the design and construction of the gas development plant was awarded to KCI. ONE contracted the firm Oranjewoud for the civil engineering aspects of the project. KCI’s role in the entire project ranged from the FEED/detailed design, process engineering assistance, integrated control system engineering and procurement, to project management and commercial assistance. Transformed restrictions
“To start with,” says Shahruz Asgari, head of the Process Department at KCI, “we were asked to undertake a conceptual study for the production of gas with a relatively simple installation.

But once we could examine the composition of the gas from the Maasveld in more detail, we realized that there were some restrictions. This has do to with the strict delivery specifications which apply to natural gas and gas condensate. We solved this problem and transformed the restrictions by making it possible to separate a number of useful LPG products, such as butane and propane, from the gas flow. Our goal was, of course, to supply the gas in accordance with the required specifications, but at the same time enable LPG products to be separated in a way which is both economic and involves a minimum of risk. In the end, it turned out that our solution could do this, but before reaching that point we had already looked at almost 20 different processes. This took place in close consultation with ONE’s experts. In the meantime we were also able to make a good estimate of what it would cost to build such a gas plant. And as it turns out we remained within the set margins, which we are really proud of.” Major challenge
The concept phase was followed by the FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) phase. A few more partners joined the KCI/ONE team thereby creating a multidisciplinary team. KCI project manager Jack van Vliet explains that the key to the success of the project was the integrated way
of working with the client, which led to a shared sense of responsibility among the team for the project management, as well as the procurement of the equipment for the gas plant, such as the automated systems. During peak periods there were 50 people on the team. This was necessary because throughout the entire project we had to stick to a strict schedule. The team occupied an entire floor of our offices in Schiedam. In this way the available expertise should be quickly shared. And because the lines of communication were short, decisions could be made quickly. Certain equipment already had to be ordered during the detailed design phase because of the long delivery time. This was necessary in order to start at the time agreed with the client on the assembly of the plant, which comprises some 75 large pieces of equipment in total. The detailed design was ready by the time the construction work began. This was not always easy because the work on the detailed design, to some extent, had to run concurrently with the construction engineering. But this was the only way in which we could meet ONE’s request for the gas plant to be operational by the final quarter of this year. Unique installation
LPGs are separated from natural gas in several place in Europe. “As such, this is a known technique,” Shahruz Asgari continues. “What is unique to

the Netherlands, however, is that this is the first gas plant in which butane and propane can be separated economically while the gas can also be delivered in accordance with the required specifications. The additional investment in the separation equipment will therefore yield extra income for ONE, and this is what makes this plant unique.” Project Manager Jack van Vliet agrees with that and further comments that the project has attracted considerable interest shown by other operators in the Netherlands. “The entire gas development plant has been built alongside the MOT tank terminal and the ECT container terminal on a site of 300 x 300 metres. The gas produced after processing is supplied to Gasunie, the condensate is transported by pipeline to the adjoining tank terminal, but can also be transported by tank truck, if required. This will also be done with the separated butane and propane. The

plant will have a special transhipment installation for this. For the time being the plant will be connected to one well. The plant has been set up for connection to three production wells in total. The processing capacity of the installation is one million cubic metres of gas a day. We have carried out another study to see if gas from other fields could be processed in the plant. Facilities are also being installed to apply compression when the pressure in the Maasveld gas field starts to fall in a few years’ time.” Mission accomplished
Looking back on the recent period Jack van Vliet sums up his experience. “What makes this project interesting in my view, is that it covers every facet of gas processing. From compression, dehydration and separation to storage and transhipment. We were able to put forward the right solutions for all these areas by making use of the latest technologies available
for this. Making sure that everything met the current legislation and provisions was not always easy. This is because the onshore regulations are quite different than those for offshore and many other restrictions also apply in the Rotterdam Port area. For both ONE and ourselves, this was quite a challenge. And the fact that we had to start on the detailed design during the conceptual phase added to the pressure. The challenge here too was keeping the flow of information and all the changes which the various parties wanted to make to the design under control. By working together closely, the project team succeeded.” “We completed the entire project successfully, and we learned a great deal in the process,” concludes Shahruz Asgari. “I therefore think that operators will want to take another hard look at their own strategy now that a way has been found to extract more value out of their gas production.”

‘Flexibilty is one of our USPs’
A.Hak Drillcon successfully completed eight drilling as on a job in Columbia.
A.Hak Drillcon is a specialist in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crossings, the direct pipe drilling method, micro tunnelling, and auger drilling. Typical applications for the services of the Helmondbased company include pipelines for gas transmission, kerosene and oil transportation, fresh and waste water, telecommunications connections, heat transport systems, landfalls, culverts, inverted siphons, drainage systems, and low-, middle- and high-tension connections. The Dutch company is focused on providing a full service to its clients, which means as well as maintaining its own engineering department. A.Hak Drillcon operates its own fleet of 15 transportable drill rigs. These vary in terms of size and application, from the 3-tonne HDD mini drill rig up to the 500 tonne HDD mega drill rig (8 rigs with a capacity of ≥ 100 tonnes), allowing the company to execute a wide scope of projects whether large or small.
Ronald van Krieken, managing director of A.Hak Drillcon, highlighted that the 500 tonne rig, is a very new investment, which was only delivered at the end of June 2013. “This is our newest HDD rig and it is one of the largest rigs in the world. The rig is conducted modular so it can be transported easily over road and water to any project site.

Last year we invested in five other new rigs, this time up to 400 tonnes pull back force. Thanks to our history in this industry we have several teams of very experienced and skilled people to operate our rigs. This gives us a big advantage, especially on contracts for difficult and large crossings. So for example, at the end of last year we worked on a job in Columbia,
where we created a very large crossing of 1650 metres under the Rio Casanara river for a 42-inch gas pipe in very difficult soil conditions. On budget and on time. After finishing that job our client, the Italian contractor SICIM, gave us several other jobs. In fact we just finished the complete project and in total we successfully did eight drillings.”

For the longer term Van Krieken anticipates closer collaboration with pipeline and offshore contractors, both in Columbia and, possibly, in other parts of the world. It is for this reason that the 400 tonnes rig will stay in Columbia for the time being. Direct Pipe
A.Hak Drillcon is the only company in the Netherlands and one out of three in the world that works with the new Direct Pipe technology. Furthermore A.Hak Drillcon is the only company that can make Direct Pip crossings longer than 800 metres. The technology combines the existing HDD and Micro Tunnelling Techniques. For this purpose the company is using a state-of-the-art system with a new machine: the Pipe Thruster. The Pipe Thruster has a special pipe clamp, which allows drilling lengths of up to 1400 metres. Longer lengths (up to 2000 metres) are possible, but this depends on the soil conditions. This saves a lot of time during the drilling process and also limits the drilling risks.
With the Direct Pipe method a special Tunnel Boring Machine is applied to the front of the pipeline. This TBM is approx. 20 metres long and is equipped with a long drilling tool, multiple measuring systems, steering cylinders and bentonite injection points suited for the local soil conditions.
Another significant project started in May this year. Also in the northwest of Holland. Van Krieken: “There we made a shore approach of 1000 metres 42” pipe by HDD. For this purpose with used maxi rig and an anti rig on a jack-up barge. Very special on this project was our solution to transport the product pipe in one length over sea, directly to the jobsite.”
Healthy
The order book of A.Hak Drillcon looks quite healthy, both at home and abroad. At this moment the mega-rig with a capacity of 500 tonnes pulling force is deployed together with some of the 330- and 400 tonnes rigs on a project of two 48 inch gas transmission pipe lines in the north and northwest of the Netherlands. By order of the Dutch Gasunie and NAM there will be performed 16 pieces of H.D.-drillings with an average length of 1000 metres. The first crossing has recently been completed, and that was the largest one, of 1250 metres under the North Sea Channel near Amsterdam.
Exciting
From talking about all these contracts, it is clearly an exciting time for A.Hak Drillcon, but nevertheless the company is always looking for new opportunities. “There is a lot of work in Europe, the Middle East and West Africa, for pipelines and river crossings,” Van Krieken continues. “Shell is considering using HDD methods for all its installations instead of normal dredging, we are having discussions with Van Oord about a project in the Waddenzee and with Statoil from Norway we are talking about the engineering for a landfall at the UK east coast where they are planning to build the world’s largest offshore development in the world.”
