WELCOME TO CLOSE HOUSE...

W

elcome to the summer 2018 edition of Close House magazine. This is my third year of welcoming you to the magazine and it has been an amazing time - personally and for the club. The highlight of the last 12 months was hosting the British Masters. The support for the tournament was unbelievable and I can’t thank our members, team and guests enough for their support. We had to convince the European Tour that the North East could make a success of the event and the passion of Graham Wylie and the whole team helped to ensure that we kept our promise. With 68,000 fans here throughout the week, and amazing coverage, the tournament exceeded our wildest dreams. Since the event there has been additional investment in our facilities with the newly refurbished Green

Café at the PGA Academy, a new halfway house on the Filly Course and the addition of the new Lodge and Pavilion accommodation. I hope you enjoy visiting those and seeing further improvements in the coming months. This season is our first for many years without a major tournament and this offers us the opportunity to develop our position as the premium golfing venue in the region. Meanwhile, with the support of Lee Westwood, we may host more big tournaments in the future. Finally, I would like to thank Close House director Alan Graham for all he has added to the club during the past 14 years. Alan has been at the club since day one and retires this summer having been a massive influence on everything we have achieved. Enjoy your time at Close House. Jonathan Lupton Managing Director

CAPTAIN’S LOG With Brian Thorpe, Barclays regional director and Close House captain 2018

W

here do we start when we look back at the British Masters? The event was so inspiring, both with the quality of the golf played and the huge crowds which packed the course each day. Congratulations to Paul Dunne on a fantastic closing round, and I must applaud the Close House team, particularly the green staff who tackled the weather that week, for an excellent job showcasing what we enjoy week-in week-out. It’s a tremendous honour to be captain of Close House this year. It is also an honour to take over the captaincy from Mel Wanless. Mel and I spent some time together last season and I have learned a great deal from him. I can’t thank him enough for providing such excellent support. Personally, I’ve got the most nerve-racking part of the year over with following the captain’s drive in and I’m looking forward to playing as much golf as possible this season. I’ve got a little bit of work to do to improve my handicap of 12 so I’m going to be here a lot! I’ll also be telling people up and down the country about Close House and continuing to bang the drum for our fantastic club. We have another strong men’s team competing in the Hadrian League this year, which I’ll be supporting with vice captain Nick Doggett. The golf on show has been excellent and I wish all our teams every success this season. Captain’s Day on July 21 is sure to be a personal highlight and I’m looking forward to welcoming my family, friends, fellow members and their families to the club. It’s been fantastic to see how far our club has come since I joined here as a founder member in 2011 and I’m looking forward to being part of it for many years to come. Enjoy your time here. I look forward to seeing you out there.

CLOSE HOUSE | The Colt Course

THE LEE WESTWOOD COLT COURSE Par 70, 6,951 yards

T

he Colt Course’s list of credentials – including hosting the 2017 British Masters and being the only course in North East England in the UK and Ireland’s Top 100 - have cemented Close House’s position on the international stage. Designed by New Zealander Scott Macpherson and officially opened by Lee Westwood in 2011, the 6.591-yard course

pays homage the legendary architect Harry Colt with the dramatic Tyne Valley landscape providing spectacular views throughout your round. Tweaked ahead of the British Masters with input from Westwood, Macpherson and golf course and estates manager Brian Clark, the Colt is a challenging design with a number of elevation changes, stern bunkering and fast, undulating putting surfaces. www.closehouse.com 11

HOLE 4, PAR 3, 221 YARDS The toughest, and longest, of the par threes, the wind often blows across the fourth and it plays half a club longer than its yardage. You must avoid the bunkers at the front of the green while the left side is safest. HOLE 5, PAR 4, 398 YARDS Stretched to just under 400 yards with the addition of a new back tee for the British Masters, the fifth is played straight uphill with three bunkers protecting the fairway. The amphitheatre-like green is set into a hill and has two main sections. Distance control is key and is made tougher by the uphill second shot to the green. HOLE 6, PAR 4, 445 YARDS The sixth plays downhill and has been extended by 23 yards thanks to a new back tee. There is more fairway over the wall than you think. Watch out for the deep bunker at the front right corner of the green. HOLE 1, PAR 4, 435 YARDS A new tee for the British Masters added 45 yards to the first and makes finding the correct position much more difficult. The best approach to the green is from the left side of the fairway, where you will get an unobstructed view of the putting surface. HOLE 2, PAR 4, 392 YARDS The second plays uphill and the landing area has been reduced by 50% with the addition of two new bunkers. The green here is one of the most undulating on the course. HOLE 3, PAR 4, 350 YARDS The third is a great risk and reward hole. Played downwind, some players may take on the green from the repositioned tee box further up the hill towards High Close House, which allows better views and means players must draw the ball into the sloping fairway. The two-tiered green affords breathtaking views across the Tyne Valley. 12 www.closehouse.com

HOLE 7, PAR 4, 483 YARDS A relatively simple par five, you have to plot your route up the hill with bunkers scattered across the fairway. Generally left is best, but watch out for the bunkers short of the green. HOLE 8, PAR 4, 477 YARDS There are two options at the eighth as the fairway is split in the centre and the left side is more generous. The second shot is difficult to get close as the green is protected by three bunkers, while a swale runs through the green. You’ll find some of the best views of the Tyne Valley from this tee box. HOLE 9, PAR 3, 206 YARDS The ninth is one of the most difficult holes on the course, played to a green which is narrow from front to back. Pin positions here can range from relatively simple on the right side of the green to incredibly difficult on the left side.

CLOSE HOUSE | The Colt Course

HOLE 10, PAR 5, 497 YARDS Played up the hill away from the PGA Academy, you must avoid the bunker to the left of the fairway at the 10th. The green can be tough to find as the contours of the fairway can send the ball down into the swales short of the putting surface. HOLE 11, PAR 4, 399 YARDS At the top of the course, the tee shot at the 11th is one of the tightest on the course. The best approach is from around 140 yards and the right side of the green is a no-go area. There are great views from the green.

“The Colt Course looked fantastic on Sky Sports during the British Masters - I’m delighted to be attached to such a great golf course.” LEE WESTWOOD

HOLE 12, PAR 3, 198 YARDS Played slightly uphill, the par three 12th requires a solid long iron or hybrid to reach the green. This hole can be tough in a crosswind. HOLE 13, PAR 4, 462 YARDS Three large bunkers to the right of the fairway and two more at the front and right of the green defend a good birdie chance at the signature 13th. Take an iron from the tee if you want to avoid all the trouble – though you can get close to the green with the driver. When the flag is front right, play right. Otherwise, left is best.

HOLE 14, PAR 3, 175 YARDS Another strong par three, the 14th is one of the most picturesque holes on the Colt Course. The shortest hole on the course, the bunker at the front of the green must be avoided. HOLE 15, PAR 4, 373 YARDS Starting behind a lake, the tee shot at the 15th is one of the hardest on the course. Accuracy is key - aim at the tallest trees in the distance with a slight draw to find the left side of the fairway. Avoid the left of the green - there is more room over the green than you think. Par is a good score here. www.closehouse.com 13

CLOSE HOUSE | The Colt Course

HOLE 16, PAR 4, 457 YARDS A dog-leg left through a corridor of trees, the key to the 16th is to get around the corner from the tee. You can use the slopes left of the green, though avoid the right side as a large bunker protects the length of the green. Approaches here must be precise to hold a tricky putting surface. HOLE 17, PAR 5, 526 YARDS A very good birdie chance, the 17th is one of the easiest holes on the course should you play into the right positions. A wide fairway slopes right to left and the wind is often back into you. There is a copse of oak trees to avoid with the second shot, though the slopes in front of the green will help kick the ball onto the putting surface. At the green, the danger is over the back and left.

“You will find numerous little wonders as you move around the course. The highlights may be the ancient forest to the left of the first hole, the old Roman fort to the left of the 11th hole, the lake by the 15th tees, or the ha-ha wall and ice lake on the 18th hole. Each has a story and each is for you to enjoy. SCOTT MACPHERSON, COLT COURSE ARCHITECT

14 www.closehouse.com

HOLE 18, PAR 4, 443 YARDS The 18th now measures close to 450 yards and there is more trouble than just the fairway bunker to the left of the fairway. A ha-ha wall runs down the right side, which is the best side to approach the green. The green is guarded by a bunker and ha-ha wall at the front and the old ice lake stretches around the right side and across the front edge.

TRUST ME, I’M A DOCTOR Close House member and Newcastle Falcons team doctor Rachel Scurfield

W

hen it comes to striking the perfect balance between work and pleasure, Rachel Scurfield has the mix just right. A lifelong rugby fan from Felton in Northumberland, Rachel splits her time between work in Leeds and Newcastle, travelling across the UK and Europe with the Newcastle Falcons, and fitting in some time to relax and play golf at Close House. “It is a pretty perfect mix,” says Rachel. “I’ve been with the Falcons for five seasons and I love it. I spend two days a week with the

“I love being a member here, it’s gorgeous even when it’s raining... I love how relaxed everything is.” team through the season and get to travel with them to every match, which has been really exciting this season. “It’s an adrenaline-fuelled job and we’re kept busy during the games so to have somewhere like Close House to escape to is perfect for me.” 20 www.closehouse.com

Replacing the rugby sidelines for Close House’s fairways provides an escape from the fast-paced world of Premiership rugby - though there are occasional calls back to work for the sports and exercise medicine consultant. “There are a few ex-sportsman here,” says Rachel. “They have little niggles and things getting in the way of their golf which they’re always asking me to take a look at. “I’m far too competitive to help them while we’re playing though,” she adds. A member of Close House since 2011, having picked up a club as a junior, Rachel relishes the chance to compete on the golf course - representing the women’s team and playing regularly in club events. “I played until I went to university, had a break while I was down in London, but picked it straight back up when I came home. Close House opened just after I got back and it looked like such a stunning place to play. “We represent the team all over Northumberland, which means we get to play loads of courses. We also get to play competitions all the time here - there’s always something to win. “Being able to play in mixed groups and the lack of formality and stuffiness here makes it so easy for you to take part – which is exactly what you need when you work through the week and just want to play to your schedule.” For Rachel, there’s nowhere else she’d rather be a member. “I love being a member here, it’s gorgeous even when it’s raining,” she adds. “It’s not like any other golf club I’ve visited - I love how relaxed everything is. “You can’t beat the views, you have everything you’d want as a golfer in one place and the people are so friendly – I don’t think I could compare it to anywhere else in the world.”

THE LEE WESTWOOD FILLY COURSE

Par 70, 6,034 yards

W

hile the Colt Course will test your game to its limits, the Filly Course is designed to challenge you while entertaining players of all abilities. Set out at the foot of the Tyne Valley, the flatter terrain and a design aimed at club golfers rather than European Tour players make this the perfect partner to the Colt. Redesigned in 2013 by the same team which constructed the Colt Course, the Filly is

22 www.closehouse.com

laid out in two loops of nine returning to the No.19 clubhouse, making it ideal for a game on a late summer evening or for families to play together. The strategic bunkering, which can be penal, is positioned to test the best players from the tee while presenting a playable challenge. Large undulating greens and a great mix of strategy throughout the round make the Filly fun to play and tough to master.

CLOSE HOUSE | The Filly Course

FILLY COURSE HIGHLIGHTS THE FIRST HOLE 1, 388 YARDS, PAR FOUR A short par four, the first is an opportunity to get your round off to a flying start. A long iron or three wood just short of the fairway bunker will give the best angle to approach the green – or drive up and over the bunker right of the fairway to leave a short pitch. THE STROKE INDEX ONE HOLE 5, 388 YARDS, PAR FOUR The fifth presents a daunting tee shot with bunkers looming right from the tee, though a generous fairway awaits for those laying up. Water lurks left and short of the green and will gather any approaches which fail to reach the putting surface. Deep bunkers and mounding protect the right of the green. THE SIGNATURE HOLE HOLE 8, 295 YARDS, PAR FOUR A short par four, the eighth tee offers one of the best views from the Close House estate, set high in the trees looking across the Tyne Valley. A lake short of the green is closer than you think when the ground is firm, and a confident pitch is required from a downhill lie over the hazard to a large green. THE LAST HOLE 18, 363 YARDS, PAR FOUR The cross bunkers present a tough decision when you reach the 18th tee; lay-up short with a fairway wood and leave a trickier approach over the ha-ha wall or take driver and risk finding the sand. The bunkers surrounding the green, and the ha-ha wall and hazard short of the putting surface, make this a demanding finish. The approach plays a club longer here with the green further beyond the wall than you think. www.closehouse.com 23

COME DINE WITH US The best of summer dining with Close House head chef Craig Harvey

F

or head chef Craig Harvey, defining Close House and writing a menu for No.19 is an ever-evolving challenge - from breakfasts for golfers to sumptuous afternoon tea and tasting menus for fine dining evenings. “It’s a great challenge to have,” says Craig as he works through preparations for the day’s afternoon teas. “We have such variety – from the golfers on a Saturday who want a burger and a pint while they watch the football to the dinner guests who want to be excited by something they’ve not seen before. “For the team in the kitchen, that’s a great challenge to have and one which keeps us working hard.” Craig’s latest menu, showcased here, includes salmon served with a lemon, thyme and parmesan rarebit; scallops with cauliflower purée and kale; fillet steak with shallot, parsnip purée and a potato and black truffle terrine; and a chocolate brownie dessert with chocolate ganache, honeycomb, grenadine black cherries and cherry sorbet. “The summer fine dining menu was really important this year and we’ve spent a long time getting it right,” adds Craig. “We want to

30 www.closehouse.com

have a standout dinner menu which will bring people to Close House in the evening, while we continue to give our daytime guests the highest quality food.” Craig, the son of a gamekeeper who has worked in Michelin-starred kitchens with the likes of Gordon Ramsay and John Williams, must also ensure his menus showcase the best of Northumberland. “The North East has such fantastic produce and we have to bring together the best of it throughout the year. The menu is built around a core daily offering for golfers and then I work with the guys in the kitchen every week to show off some of the amazing produce we have access to.” On the day menu you’ll find No.19 staples

including the Westwood Burger and The British Masters Burger alongside steak and mushroom pie, hot smoked salmon salad, and the No.19 Scotch egg while specials from Craig and the team are updated daily. The North East theme continues into the drinks menu too, where you’ll find local beers and ales from Wylam Brewery alongside a full range from Heineken, plus the award-winning Hepple Gin, which is distilled just a few miles away. “We’re in the heart of Northumberland and have incredible produce on our doorstep along with many of the experts in their fields,” adds Craig. “It’s our job to put all of that to good use and do something which will excite people. We’re always working on something new.” www.closehouse.com 31

TAKING A BREAK Dean Bailey chats to Lee Westwood about taking his first ever extended break from life on tour, his Ryder Cup hopes, and what the future holds

I

t has been 25 years since Lee Westwood made his European Tour debut in 1993. The years that have followed have included more than 500 European Tour starts and 23 titles, two European order of merits, 22 weeks as world number one, and a place among the greatest players to ever tee it up in the Ryder Cup with nine appearances and 23 points to his name. With a long career already under his belt, and one which has been all but unbroken since his debut in 1993, 45-year-old Lee decided to take his first extended break from life on tour at the start of 2018. “I had a decent end to 2017 and I played some good golf in the first four events of 2018. It’s been a nice time to take a break at the start of the year - my first proper break since I turned pro. “There aren’t many players who have had such an extended period at the top of the game. The one who has done it best, Phil Mickelson, takes long breaks and has maintained his form so I thought I’d take the opportunity to step back and take some time for myself.” Lee has spent much of his time away from the tour at home in Newcastle. “It’s been nice to enjoy some time away from the full schedule. We’ve had some great

34 www.closehouse.com

days at the racing and I’m really enjoying life in Newcastle. The people are great; I’m very settled here now. The city is such a fantastic place to spend time; there are so many good places to eat and things to do. “It hasn’t all been relaxing though, I’ve been working hard in the gym and made some good progress on the fitness side with a view to a busy summer.” Lee admits he hasn’t spent much of the early part of 2018 practising, favouring a complete break from the game – though he has continued to spend time at Close House, where he has been attached since 2011. “I’m totally at home here these days and really enjoy spending time with Graham [Wylie] and the members. I’ll use the practice facilities when I’m here and there’s always something to come along to and be part of.” Having had time to reflect on the end of 2017, which included his week in the spotlight as host of the British Masters at Close House, Lee is proud of what Close House achieved, and the support from the North East crowd. “Hosting the British Masters was undoubtedly the highlight of last season. “We had a great week, I really enjoyed hosting it and we got great support from the fans and my fellow pros, which made the whole event a great success.

CLOSE HOUSE | Lee Westwood

www.closehouse.com 35

“There were so many people packed around the first tee and all the way around the 18th. As a player, the atmosphere was brilliant. The guys loved being in Newcastle and I’m really keen to see an event back here soon. “Paul Dunne’s finish, chipping in on the last to hold off Rory McIlroy, was a superb way to finish off a really great week. “It’s a tough job to host and play, there are all sorts of things to do, but I think I now hold the best finish by a host for the event, which is a nice one to have.” 36 www.closehouse.com

In a Ryder Cup year, one that will see Westwood join the team as a vice-captain, he admits his goals for the future are not as clear cut as they once were. “I’m looking forward to having a bit of a refreshed perspective and being able to play a lot of golf in the second half of the European Tour season. There are a lot of big events to look forward to and I’m feeling good about getting back into the swing of things. “Playing the Ryder Cup isn’t on my horizon where I’m sitting right now. I think we’re

shaping up to have a very strong team this time and I’m looking forward to being there in my capacity as a vice captain in France alongside Thomas Bjorn. “I’d love to be captain in the not too distant future so I’m very much looking forward to seeing that side of things come September.” For now, there’s just a little more relaxation planned before Lee returns to his place among Europe’s elite.

HEAD -TO-HEAD On the course with Lee Westwood and Ronan Keating

C

lose House attached professional Lee Westwood and Boyzone lead signer Ronan Keating will team up at Close House on September 10 to raise money for The Graham Wylie Foundation and The Marie Keating Foundation. With plenty of rounds together over the years - at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and in events around the world - the pair decided to build up to the event by going head-to-head to share some of their favourite golfing memories. 1. How did you meet? LW: “It was years ago in a charity golf event. I’m sure Ronan will remember meeting me for the first time – he didn’t stand out for me. I do remember thinking, ‘he’s a lot smaller than I thought he’d be’.” RK: “Who is Lee again?” 2. What have you learned from one another? LW: “How to mime on stage - you’ve got to put your finger in your ear, that’s how the pros do it. On the golf course, Ronan’s shown me a lot of things you should never do… sometimes I actually think he’s swinging in slow motion.” RK: “Oh Lee Westwood, yeah we met once or twice at Wimbledon. I have always admired him as a professional dancer, he has got some moves.” 3. The best shot you’ve ever hit? LW: “The fairway bunker shot on the 18th in the final round of The Open at Turnberry in 2009. I got it onto the green to give myself a chance to win.” RK: “A 100ft putt at St Andrews while partnered with Clint Eastwood. He was much younger than I was led to believe.”

40 www.closehouse.com

CLOSE HOUSE | Westwood vs Keating

4. The worst shot you’ve ever hit? LW: “The first of the three putts I hit on the final green at Turnberry in 2009. I missed the playoff with Tom Watson and Stewart Cink by a shot.” RK: “Hitting the hotel on the 17th at St Andrews. Lee falling to the floor laughing didn’t help.” 5. Most embarrassing moment on the course? LW: “There must be loads but I block them out.” RK: “Realising Clint Eastwood wasn’t in my fourball.” 6. Favourite on-course memory? LW: “The final day at Medinah in 2012 was very special. It was one of the greatest sporting comebacks ever.” RK: “Leading the Dunhill Links. Seeing my name on the leaderboard was incredible - though it wasn’t there long.” 7. Highlight of your career so far? LW: “Getting to world number one.” RK: “Getting a number one.” 8. Would you play one another for money? LW: “Yes, any day of the week. I’d give him nine shots (he’d want at least 12) and he wouldn’t be playing off the front tees – no matter how much he likes playing off them.” RK: “Of course. What does Lee play off now?” 9. How did this golf day come about? LW: “We were chatting and got on to Ronan wanting to host a golf day to raise money for the foundation. I suggested he host it at Close House and it all grew from there.” RK: “We’ve known each other for some time now and I’m lucky to call Lee a friend. We have been throwing around the idea for a while so it’s really great to finally do this together.” 10. Your favourite memory with one another? LW: “The Dunhill Links is brilliant every year and we always have a great time up there. Any of those for me.” RK: “The Dunhill for me too, probably in the Jigger.” For more information go to mariekeating.ie and www.grahamwyliefoundation.org.uk www.closehouse.com 41

IN THE FAMILY Getting to know Andy, Nicola and Maggie Whitehead

G

olf means something different to every player and fan - for the Whitehead family it means spending time together. Andy, sales manager at LWC and a corporate member, introduced his daughter Maggie, 12, to the game when she was old enough to swing a plastic club in the back garden at home. Meanwhile mum Nicola, a district nurse, is always on-hand at practices and events to support Maggie’s dream of making it to the LPGA Tour. “We haven’t been here too long but we already feel very much at home,” says Andy when we catch up after one of Maggie’s practice sessions at the PGA Academy. “There aren’t many European Tour venues where you can walk into the clubhouse and have a cup of coffee or play nine holes every day. I’m lucky to get the mix of work here and visiting with Maggie.” When we look back at the British Masters, Maggie has the fondest memories. One of the first players to qualify for the Junior Masters, she got to spend time with Lee Westwood in the build-up to the event as well as being part of British Masters week. “Meeting Lee and getting tips from him was amazing. It was really fun to play some games and do some challenges. Lee does so much for juniors and he was really inspiring,” says Maggie.

44 www.closehouse.com

“I then got to play in the Junior Masters, which was just incredible. I got to meet Sergio Garcia and loads of the best players in the world. They were all really friendly and I got loads of selfies with them.” Back to normality at Close House, Maggie has already booked her place in the 2018 Junior Masters, and agrees with her parents that there’s nowhere better to be based as a golfer. “I get loads of support here. I love to practice and the Academy is so good with all the facilities and different things you can do.

CLOSE HOUSE | On course

“I spend time with Sally [Hinton-Lewis] too, which helps me keep improving as I go off and play all over the country,” adds Maggie. Mum Nicola adds: “I don’t play golf but I love coming with Maggie and Andy. There’s a real wow factor when you first come here - the setting is gorgeous and everyone is so friendly.” With a full diary of events around the UK coming up this summer, Maggie is looking forward to testing her game against some of the best young female golfers in the world. “I love getting the chance to play against really good players from all over the world. I’ve

been to St Andrews and Pinehurst in America already and there aren’t many people my age that can say that,” she explains. “I’d love to be world number one, win a major, and be part of a winning Solheim Cup team one day. “This year I really want to get into the England north region girls’ squad and get my handicap down even further.” Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of mum and dad, who attend each of her events and have seen her progress from a two-year-old with plastic golf clubs in the garden to one of the region’s best young players. “Maggie officially overtook my handicap of 10 last year so she’s had some fun telling people that,” says Andy. “It’s every parent’s dream to see their child achieve their goals and we’ve got every faith Maggie will achieve hers as she’s so dedicated.” Nicola is right behind Maggie every step too. “I may not be a golfer but I love watching it – whether it’s on TV or out on the course with Maggie,” she adds. “Maggie’s got such amazing drive to practice and improve so we just need to give her as many opportunities to achieve her dreams as possible.” You’re sure to see Maggie, Andy and Nicola at Close House, and probably a lot further afield, in the next few years. www.closehouse.com 45

PRESERVING YOUR WEALTH FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Paul Nickalls, head of the Wills and Probate Team at Sintons, looks at how you can use careful estate planning to both maximise the amount that you pass on to your loved ones and minimise the amount of inheritance tax payable on your death. After working hard all your life and making, saving and investing money along the way, it is completely understandable that you would want to leave as much of your estate as possible to your chosen beneficiaries – this could be your spouse or partner, children or grandchildren, relatives or friends, or perhaps charities or other organisations which have played a significant role in your life. However, all too often, people’s wealth does not pass entirely as they may wish and a significant amount of it is used up to pay inheritance tax (IHT). It remains the case that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is the largest single beneficiary from people’s estates, with IHT payments of £4.67 billion being received in the 2015/16 tax year alone. Effective succession planning can have significant benefits in preserving your estate, and can ensure that more of your hard-earned wealth and assets go to your beneficiaries rather than HMRC. The level of IHT obligation for your estate depends on how much your estate is worth and the tax allowances in place at the time of your death. Currently, the IHT allowance is £325,000 and normally you will pay IHT on anything above that at the rate of 40%. If you leave assets to your spouse or civil partner, they will not have to pay IHT as it can be added to their own estate and settled after their death. On top of the £325,000 allowance, a Residence Nil Rate Band is now in place, which provides an additional £125,000 allowance which can be applied against a deceased person’s main residence, on the condition that it is left to a direct descendant and the estate is valued at less than £2 million. Beyond that figure, the Residential Nil Rate Band benefit will gradually be withdrawn. By reducing your IHT liabilities through careful estate

planning, you can preserve more of your wealth to pass to future generations. In planning ahead, I would strongly advise consideration of the following: • Make a will – a will is an essential document to have in place and will set out your wishes for after your death and ensure they are followed. It gives clarity to what will happen and ensures your loved ones do not have to deal with the many potential problems resulting from you dying intestate (without a will). Care should be taken to ensure that the provisions of the will are as tax efficient as possible. • Take professional advice on what is included in your estate – IHT is payable on the value of the assets in your estate when you die, even those located abroad. It covers your home, properties, savings, investments, jewellery and other valuable items, cars and proceeds from life insurance policies not written in an appropriate trust. Careful planning can ensure that as many as possible of your assets qualify for an exemption from IHT. • Establish a trust – putting your money into a trust can reduce the amount of IHT payable. There are three main types of trust which can assist with IHP planning and is crucial that you take professional advice to ensure that you choose the one that suits your needs best.

THE GREEN CAFÉ The recently refurbished Green Café is a great place to chill out and is a hub of activity. Hot and cold drinks and food are available throughout the day, and you can relax and watch Sky Sports Golf on the TV among some fantastic memorabilia from Lee Westwood’s career.

Head PGA professional Matthew Naylor It has been a really exciting 12 months at the PGA Academy, both with the British Masters bringing thousands of fans in to watch the best players in the world and seeing the Academy continue to present a complete pathway for golfers - from beginners through to the European Tour. One of my biggest coaching commitments is with Northumbria University, a job I inherited from Jonathan Lupton and one which I love doing. The team has produced some excellent players in the last few years and came within half a point of winning the British Universities league this season. I’m really looking forward to seeing the next group of players join us and seeing some of the most talented players in the region here at Close House. For more information on Northumbria University golf scholarships, email matthew. naylor@closehouse.co.uk www.closehouse.com 53

PRO-FILE PGA professional Sally Hinton-Lewis There are a lot of exciting things happening in the game right now particularly for women and girls. This year we’re working with England Golf on the Girls Golf Rocks and Women on Par programmes to get more people involved. Our sessions so far have been well supported and we’ve got lots of keen players visiting the Academy every week. I’m passionate about seeing more girls playing golf so it’s great to have these national programmes taking place at our Academy. We’ve also got the elite end of player progression covered with the county girls and ladies squad visiting regularly. There have been loads of success stories in regional and national events, including Close House member Maggie Whitehead and Lee Westwood scholarship holder Rachel Gourley, and I can’t wait to see how everyone progresses. 54 www.closehouse.com

PRO-FILE PGA professional Tim Cockill There’s always something going on at the PGA Academy, from beginners’ sessions through to Lee Westwood using the facilities. Our Youth Academy continues to go from strength to strength as more young players progress through the Junior Passport initiative. Our monthly sessions are great fun and we’re seeing some really good results as the boys and girls progress out onto the Yearling Course and start to learn a bit more about the game. I’m also really proud to be working with Thorp Academy. We’ve got a team of four who are progressing well. It’s great to work alongside their mentor Graeme Storm and I’m sure you’ll be reading a lot more about these guys in the months to come. Lastly, we’ve got some fantastic equipment in the custom fitting suite from Titleist and PING, along with all the major brands. It’s a great time to pop in and get something new in the bag. www.closehouse.com 55

PRO-FILE Assistant PGA professional Will Robson It’s been a fantastic few months for coaching, both at Close House and in local schools thanks to the amazing support we’ve had from Lookers Motor Group. We’ve now visited 14 local schools and introduced more than 250 children to golf through fun games and classes. We’re beginning to see the children from those sessions make use of their free junior coaching vouchers and I can’t wait to see our junior ranks swell as more take up the voucher and get involved with the junior development programmes we run at the PGA Academy. On a personal note, I’ve got my PGA graduation coming up this summer, which will be the culmination of four years of hard work. KEEPING SAFE WITH CCTV With confusing statistics and conflicting media reports, it has become difficult to assess whether there is actually a serious threat to people in their own homes from burglary and associated violence. A good security plan will help mitigate this threat, and CCTV is becoming an integral part of any good security plan in homes throughout our country.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CRIME STATISTICS Police-recorded crime is only one of two methods used by the government to produce crime statistics. The other, the Crime Survey for England and Wales is preferred by the Office for National Statistics. Whichever platform we use, it is commonly believed within the security industry that crime is on the increase. A 32% increase in domestic burglary across England and Wales was reported last year. The Police claim that the crime figures can show a rise due partly to changes in the way crimes are recorded but also due to victims feeling more confident to report crimes. Whilst this may be the case for sexual crimes or domestic abuse, it is certainly not the case for burglary, an invasive crime where the immediate response of a victim is to call the Police - whether this be to attempt to recover their stolen items or simply to obtain a crime number for an insurance claim. With burglaries no longer classed as an ‘emergency’ by police, unless they are still in progress, there is now more emphasis on homeowners to address their own security requirements.

CCTV is becoming a more common tool for homeowners to protect their property and family. Good locks and house alarms are no longer a sufficient deterrent - if we hear a house alarm sounding, the immediate thought is ‘I wish someone would shut that alarm up’ rather than considering that a burglary may be in progress! The use of CCTV is a serious deterrent when criminals are researching which houses to target and which to leave alone. They are well aware of the technological advances, meaning even a very basic household CCTV system can record high-quality images which can be good enough to secure a conviction. We are seeing social media (particularly Facebook) being used as an ‘early-warning’ tool by resident groups to pass on information to communities on suspicious activity in almost real time. SRX Security have recently established our first CCTV team outside of London, bringing in a manager with over 20 years experience in CCTV installation who will head up a team of ex-military veterans who have retrained in CCTV installation following successful careers in the British Army. The new team will be based in the North East and will facilitate all projects in the region.

Get in touch for free advice and quotations - basic home CCTV systems supplied and installed from £450. Packages can include night-vision capability, motion sensors, smart phone remote viewing and full alarm integration.

The romantic ‘cat-burglars’ of yesteryear are long gone. Modern day burglaries are carried out by highly organised and extremely violent criminals who have little sympathy for their victims and the impact of their crime.

ON COURSE With golf course and estates manager Brian Clark

A

fter more than 13 years of hard work, it was incredible to see how good the Colt Course looked for the British Masters, and that is all down to the superb team of greenstaff I have around me. The course was in the best condition I’ve seen it since it was built in 2011 and, while it was a tough week for all the guys with early starts and late finishes, it’s a week we will never forget. The feedback from the European Tour, and its senior tournament agronomy consultant Eddie Adams, was excellent. He was really happy to see the course prepared to such a high standard and we’re delighted he, and the players, got to see it at its peak condition that week. Being in charge of the course for a European Tour event for the first time was special and it’s definitely right at the top of my own list of achievements. Progress never stops at Close House and since

the end of last season we’ve been busy with some big projects. We’ve got the halfway house up and running on the Filly Course and we’ve also added three new ladies tee boxes to the Filly. We’ve also been involved with the work at the new Pavilion and Lodge accommodation and we are really proud of how those projects are looking. On the courses, this season is all about maintaining our high standards. While there is no major tournament here this year, we host so many big golf days, corporate days and members’ events that the team is always working hard to present the courses at their best and showcase what Close House is all about. With all last year’s success behind us, it’s time to push on and make things even better. I’ll never be 100% happy, but we’ll keep pushing to get closer to it. There’s always something to look forward to here and hopefully we’ll see another huge event back here sooner rather than later. www.closehouse.com 61

“I started here in 2016 as a seasonal greenkeeper, got to stay on through the winter and be part of the team for the British Masters, then moved up to look after the PGA Academy. The Academy’s a great spot, we’ve got an excellent team with four great professionals and we have a lot of fun in there every day. We see a lot of members week-in week-out and there’s always a fantastic atmosphere.”

“I’ve been here nearly 13 years and I love coming to work. There’s a lot to look after with 120 staff and there’s always something going on, which makes every day interesting. The best part of working here has to be the setting, where else could you walk out the front of the office and get a view like we do?”

“I’ve been at Close House for six years having worked as an electrician for the company which built No.19. Since then I think I’ve seen just about every inch of the estate. There’s always a new project to get stuck into, from renovating the Pavilion and Lodge accommodation though to creating the new halfway house on the Filly Course. There’s always a new challenge to keep you motivated.”

“I’ve been in the kitchen at Close House since late 2017 and it’s been fantastic to get to know what Close House is all about. I’ve worked with head chef Craig before and we get on very well. It’s a lovely setting, the whole team gets on very well and it’s a great environment to come to work in. FOND FAREWELL Close House director Alan Graham retires this summer after 14 years at the heart of the Close House story. Here he shares some of his fondest memories

W

hen news of the British Masters coming to Close House broke, Alan Graham had already been working behind the scenes for more than a decade, making sure the club was ready for Europe’s best players. Having joined his close friend and Close House owner Graham Wylie in receiving the keys to the estate in 2004, Alan was instrumental in the renovations to the house which created the hotel while also playing a big part in the purchase of land for the Colt Course. He has been part of every major project here - from building the Colt to constructing No.19 and he even got the job of official starter for the British Masters. It’s fair to say he’s had a hand in just about everything that has happened at Close House in the last 14 years, and it won’t be quite the same without him here every day. “I still remember our first day back in 2004, the house, the football pitches on the fairways, the rundown barns which would become the Courtyard accommodation, the original golf

course - what we’ve created in such a short period of time is incredible really,” says Alan. When the week of the British Masters arrived in September 2017, Alan found himself centre stage on the first tee. “It was the proudest moment of my career,” he says. “I had the chance to speak to some of the best golfers in the world – from having breakfast with Sergio Garcia and Danny Willett to talking to Rory McIlroy about how much he loved being in Newcastle. To see Close House on Sky Sports and in the press that week was fantastic.” Alan will serve as an ambassador for the club and you’re sure to see him out on the course and in No.19 for years to come. “I love this place. I’ll never be far away and I’ll be here playing golf and spending time with Graham and all my friends here. I’ll also be doing some travelling, and splitting time between Majorca and Close House. It’s going to be great to be able to sit back and enjoy what we’ve created.” www.closehouse.com 63
