CLOSE HOUSE | Foreword

INSIDE 08 HAVE A HEART The Have a Heart Trophy 2016

WELCOME TO CLOSE HOUSE...

W

elcome to the Summer 2016 edition of Close House magazine and to another fantastic season for golf in the North East

of England. As I write, we are celebrating a record breaking year for the Have a Heart Trophy at Close House, which raised more than £500,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund. To welcome everyone to the event was a privilege and we look forward to another successful year in 2017. Last year was a great year for Close House with the club hosting its first tour events and cementing its place as the jewel in the North East’s golfing crown. I have been part of the club for seven years now, moving from my role as head professional to take over from John Glendinning in January 2016. To follow the fantastic work John

has done here is a tough challenge, but I am looking forward to delivering Graham Wylie’s vision for Close House and being part of his drive to constantly improve each aspect of the club - whether that’s on the golf course, in the clubhouse or in the services we provide. We continue to push to secure golf’s biggest events for the North East, and to offer an industry-leading service to our members and guests. I hope our members and partners, and all of my colleagues, enjoy the Close House experience as much as I have come to. If this is your introduction to Close House, welcome to the club.

CLOSE HOUSE | Captain’s log

CAPTAIN’S LOG With Close House captain Alan Beenshill

I

t’s a great honour to follow in the footsteps of the many fantastic captains here at Close House, most recently Nigel Brown. To be asked to follow Nigel as captain is a tough task, and I must say a big thank you to him for sharing his experiences with me. Last season was an important chapter in the story of Close House, hosting our first European Seniors Tour and EuroPro Tour events. Now, I look forward to the club hosting more of golf’s biggest events with corporate partners and attached professional Lee Westwood. I would also like to thank the team at Close House, headed by Jonathan Lupton. They make the Close House experience a special one and ensure the club is the premier golf resort in the North East. We are continuing to celebrate the success of the Have a Heart Trophy, which raised a record amount of money for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund in May. The work of everyone at CHUF, and the support given by Graham and Andrea Wylie, is incredible and I am sure the event will continue its success in the future. One of my key roles this year is leading the team in the Hadrian Golf League. We finished in second place for a fourth year in 2015 and, following a strong start to this season, we are looking forward to going one step further and lifting the trophy. I also wish the ladies and junior teams every success this summer. Captain’s Day on August 27 will be a personal highlight of the year, and I urge members to be part of a memorable day for golfers and their families - though I’m not revealing too much before the day. To my fellow members, I wish you the best of luck on the golf course in the coming months, and I hope you enjoy the fantastic schedule of events we have coming up. To those experiencing Close House for the first time, welcome to the club, and I hope you enjoy the experience as much as we do.

WESTWOOD’S WORLD Close House attached professional Lee Westwood looks back at The Masters and ahead to a busy summer of European golf and the Ryder Cup

S

itting in the sunshine on the terrace at No.19 at Close House, there’s a definite calm around Lee Westwood. Following a closing round of 69 and a second place finish in The Masters, his fifth top 10 in seven years at Augusta National, the 43-year-old is in the final few days of a five-week break before embarking on a packed schedule of European golf this summer. “It’s always nice to be here at Close House, a place I’m spending more time now I’m back in the UK,” says Lee. “I do my practising at the PGA Academy and play the golf course a lot, including in a couple of club competitions this year. It’s been great fun to play with a few more of the members and put them under a bit of pressure. “Graham [Wylie] and I also play together in the club knockout. I’m giving up a lot of shots [playing off a handicap of plus-four] so I have to shoot six or seven under-par to win. With Graham coming in with the odd par for a nett eagle, I think we’re a solid team.” It’s been a relaxed few weeks for Lee in the North East, including being part of this year’s Have a Heart Trophy, but he’s now looking forward to a packed summer in Europe, the season’s remaining majors and trying to earn his place in the European Ryder

10 www.closehouse.com

Cup team, captained by his friend Darren Clarke, for the 10th time. “It’s a very busy summer with the majors moving up to accommodate the Olympic Games in Rio, and I want to play well to move up the World Rankings. I also need to show some form and catch Darren’s eye. “My expectations haven’t changed too much following The Masters, which was a great result as I wasn’t optimistic going in after such a quiet start to the season. “I love Augusta, I’ve had some fantastic finishes there over the years, and it was great to get a result in the first major of the year. I had a chance to win on Sunday following the chip-in for eagle on the 15th but Danny [Willett] pulled away. He hit one of the best pitches I’ve ever seen at 17, didn’t make a bogey on Sunday, and was a very worthy winner. “I’m in a good frame of mind and I’ve been working hard on my game since then. I like the way I’m swinging it and the aim is to be competitive every week I play.” As well as top European Tour events this summer, Lee is looking forward to returning to Royal Troon for The Open Championship, where he finished fourth in 2004 - the last time The Open was played there. “There are some big tournaments coming

CLOSE HOUSE | Lee Westwood

up throughout the summer, on a number of golf courses I’ve played well on in the past. “I’m excited to play the British Masters at The Grove later this year too,” adds Lee. “The European Tour and Sky Sports did a great job with the event last year and I’m looking forward to the event moving on to another top venue for 2017. “There aren’t too many tournaments in Britain now, particularly in England, so it’s nice to get out in front of a home crowd when we can and connect with the fans.” Come September and the Ryder Cup, Lee is hoping to be part of the European team taking on the USA at Hazeltine – though he understands that experience alone will not guarantee his place. “The goal is, and always has been, to make it into the Ryder Cup team from the points list and I’ve got the schedule to do that. “It’s shaping up to be a young team with some new players and Darren may need players with experience, but he has to pick players who are playing well – whether they have Ryder Cup experience or not. “I wouldn’t want to go to a Ryder Cup if I wasn’t playing well – you want to play your best golf when you’re playing for 11 other guys.” With so many Europeans making their

team and Europe being successful. I take a lot more pride in being part of seven winning Ryder Cup sides than I do in my own points total” case for selection, from experienced players like Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose to up-andcoming stars including Matt Fitzpatrick and Shane Lowry, Lee is confident Europe is in a strong position. “European golf is in a great position with so many good young players. I am always www.closehouse.com 11

CLOSE HOUSE | Lee Westwood

impressed with modern young players and the way they take anything on. They go and play on the biggest stages and soak it all up.” With nine Ryder Cups behind him, seven of them on the winning side, Lee has a wealth of experience when it comes to taking on the USA. “I got to play with Nick Faldo in my first Ryder Cup – someone I’ve always respected and a player who has done everything in the game. He was playing his 11th Ryder Cup and looking across the tee, knowing all the matches he’d been through, was very reassuring. Older players can share those experiences with the new guys, help make them comfortable and let them concentrate on playing their best golf.” Faldo leads the European points record with 25 points in his 11 matches, two points ahead of Westwood, though individual glory isn’t Lee’s priority. “To be up there with another Englishman is a great honour and I’d like to get to the top of the European points list at some stage. But the Ryder Cup is all about the team and Europe being successful. I take a lot more pride in being part of seven winning Ryder Cup sides than I do in my own points total.” Having risen to the top of world golf in his career, Lee is happy looking at his 12 www.closehouse.com

short-term goals for this summer, and realising more of his golfing ambitions. “I’m 43 years old and there’s no timescale on how long I’m going to be at the top level,” he says. “As long as I’m competitive and keen to practise and improve, I’ll keep on playing. You can’t compete with the kids out here unless you’re 100% committed, but I feel fit and strong and I still love to play. “A Ryder Cup captaincy has been mentioned, and to be captain at some stage would be a great honour. I’ve played nine Ryder Cups under nine different captains, and I’d like to take some of what I’ve learned and apply that. It looks great fun to do, and I know Darren is loving it, so I’d like to be able to lead a European side one day.”

“This golf course aims to produce the most exciting range of thrills for every level of golfer, and it requires your utmost attention” Scott Macpherson, Lee Westwood Colt Course architect

One of the UK & Ireland’s Top 100 courses, the Lee Westwood Colt Course remains a favourite of the man himself, as he explains here

W

ith a lot of golf under my belt on the Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House since becoming the club’s attached professional in 2011, I remain incredibly proud to put my name to the course and return to play it as often as I can. The tour events held over the course in 2015 proved it is a top-class venue and the feedback we have received from the players has been fantastic. From the stunning landscape in which the course is set to the elements of risk and reward presented throughout the round, what Scott Macpherson has created is truly spectacular. Since officially opening the course in 2011, I have seen it mature and evolve as the Close House team led by Brian Clark continues to add to and refine the layout. That work has continued in 2016 with the addition of four new tee boxes at the 1st, 5th, 6th and 17th holes – adding around 200 yards to the total length of the course. The landing area at the 13th will also be increased by changing the fairway bunker to the right of the fairway, while the fairways will be better defined by longer rough in some key areas around the course. I look forward to returning to play the course throughout 2016 and seeing it develop its position as one of the UK’s finest courses. The 9th hole on the Lee Westwood Colt Course

CLOSE HOUSE | The Lee Westwood Colt Course

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LEE WESTWOOD COLT COURSE, AS PLAYED BY THE MAN HIMSELF HOLE 1, 447 YARDS, PAR FOUR The new tee at the first adds around 50 yards to the hole and makes the tee shot a little more demanding with bunkers waiting right. Find the left side of the fairway here for an unobstructed view of the green. HOLE 4, 221 YARDS, PAR THREE The toughest, and longest, of the par threes, the 4th is a tough test early in the round. The wind often blows across the hole and it plays around half a club longer than its actual yardage. The bunkers at the front of the green are to be avoided - the left side of the green is safest. HOLE 9, 206 YARDS, PAR THREE An attractive but challenging hole, the 9th plays very long from the back tee. The green is narrow from front to back but there is lots of room on the right half of the green should you need it. HOLE 10, 497 YARDS, PAR FIVE Played up the hill away from the PGA Academy, the 10th is a tight driving hole and the bunker to the left of the fairway must be avoided. The second shot is played uphill to a raised green find the fairway and a birdie opportunity awaits. HOLE 13, 462 YARDS, PAR FOUR An opportunity to open your shoulders with a generous fairway, the 462-yard 13th is well defended by large bunkers, with two more protecting the front and right of the green. When the flag is front right, play right. Otherwise, the left side is best. Par is a good score here. HOLE 18, 430 YARDS, PAR FOUR The final hole and a tough finish - a ha-ha wall runs down the right side of the 18th fairway, which is also the best side to approach the green from. The green is well guarded with a wall, bunker and the old Ice Lake right and stretching across the front edge. www.closehouse.com 15

CLOSE TO HOME

Rob Armstrong tells Dean Bailey about his passion for golf, and why he is part of the club

C

lose House members have followed many routes to becoming part of the club. For Rob Armstrong the choice to join the club as a founder member was an easy one. “It’s the closest club to home and I’ve been determined to play more golf for years, so it was a simple decision to make,” says Rob. Just a short drive from the club, and having joined with many of his golfing friends, it’s no surprise Rob feels at home in No.19 – whether he’s spent a morning on the course or in the clubhouse with his wife Bev and daughters Brooke, 9, and Khloe, 5. “We’ve all got busy diaries with my work and their love of singing and dancing, but we spend a bit of time here and they have a great time. “They can go outside and see the ducks and the swans, and you know they’re safe. The clubhouse is very relaxed and that atmosphere is a huge part of why I enjoy being here so much. “To be able to come in and enjoy your time in the clubhouse, with a great atmosphere and top quality service is a real pleasure. There’s none of the nonsense you find at so many clubs – there are kids in the clubhouse, there are people laughing and that’s great to be part of.”

20 www.closehouse.com

Rob admits he hasn’t been the most committed golfer in the past, having first tried the game as a schoolboy at Close House, but he committed to playing more golf last season and is seeing the benefit of more time at the PGA Academy and on the course. “Though I joined a few years ago, determined to play more golf, my first season of proper golf here wasn’t until 2015. “I took 20 lessons with Jonathan Lupton and he got me into it again. I’ve been playing some good golf and won a few things last season, which is always nice. My handicap is still up at 24 but I’m aiming to get that as low as I can this year.” Enjoying the Close House experience with his friends and family, and working on his golf game, it’s clear Rob has found his perfect club. “I was attracted to Close House because of the number of friends I have here and how close it is to home. The people here make it special and they create a great vibe. “My first game of golf was here as a schoolboy, and sitting in No.19 looking out across the golf course, it’s hard to believe how far the club has come. I’m looking forward to being part of it for a long time.”

IN FINE FORM

The Lee Westwood Filly Course at Close House has grown into the perfect partner to the Colt Course

T

he Lee Westwood Filly Course at Close House offers something for every golfer - from those playing a few holes in the evening with family to those testing their skills on a layout with an international reputation. Redesigned by Scott Macpherson, the man behind the Lee Westwood Colt Course, in 2013, the course demands strategy from the tee with accuracy rewarded more than distance and wayward drives punished by rough and a number of well-placed bunkers -

30 www.closehouse.com

laying up is often the best approach to secure pars here. The positioning of the hazards and flatter terrain make the Filly Course ideal for those new to the game or looking to sharpen their skills. The course makes great use of its location in the heart of the Tyne Valley with the best views found at the top of the course around the turn, while its two loops of nine returning to No.19 make it ideal for an evening game.

CLOSE HOUSE | The Lee Westwood Filly Course

LEE WESTWOOD’S FILLY HIGHLIGHTS HOLE 1, 388 YARDS, PAR FOUR The 1st is a short par four and a great opportunity to get your round off to a flying start. The best angle of attack is from in front of the left-hand bunker, or you can commit to driving over the right-hand trap to leave a short pitch. Strategy is key here, and it’s a great taste of what’s to come. HOLE 5, 382 YARDS, PAR FOUR A generous fairway for those laying up, though less generous the closer you get to the green. I only recommend taking driver if you’re feeling confident. The water at the front of the green will capture any short approaches – particularly tricky to a front flag. HOLE 7, 317 YARDS, PAR FOUR A short par four, the ideal tee shot at the 7th is onto the plateau some 210 yards from the tee. The green here is two-tiered, making distance control essential to leaving a great chance for a birdie. HOLE 14, 423 YARDS, PAR FOUR A demanding par four, the 14th is generally played into the wind, and will require a driver from the tee if you want to find the green in two. Avoid the deep fairway bunker to the right of the fairway and a generous green awaits your second shot.

“The Lee Westwood Filly Course is

perfect for nine holes in the evening or for a relaxed game with friends”

HOLE 18, 363 YARDS, PAR FOUR The cross bunkers mean you are faced with a choice on the tee at the 18th. You can either lay-up short with a fairway wood or take driver and play over them. The ditch and ha-ha wall short of the green will catch poorly struck approaches and the greenside bunkers make this a demanding finish. A fitting last hole – a par here is well earned. www.closehouse.com 31

HI-VIZ

Want to get noticed? Go glow! Time was, the golf course was all about plus fours and plush socks. No more, my friend. While there remains a place for twills and tweeds, today’s on-trend golfer is getting noticed in block colours and bright flashes of fuchsia and fresh orange. And while a pop of colour may not improve your golf game, at least you know you’ll look and feel good on the course, and in the clubhouse. If more muted shades are more your bag, there’s plenty of room for traditional shades of navy, black and white, enhanced with a multi-textured, multi-layered approach and the odd check here and there. As the old saying goes - look good, play good. #4

CLOSE HOUSE | Food/Chef

OUI, CHEF with executive head chef Craig Harvey Food has always been an important part of Close House and we have been working hard over the last 12 months to improve every part of what we do to ensure we live up to the world-class golf courses and facilities here. I wanted a fresh start for the food at Close House when I became executive head chef and we have continued in that vein. The team here shares my passion for local food and we’re introducing new dishes and developing the menus through the seasons to fit with the appetites of our guests and members. For this year’s magazine we have put together a selection from our ever-popular barbecues (a must when/if we get a good British summer), as well as showing off the Club Burger – one of our most popular dishes and something we work on throughout the year to introduce new ideas – whether that’s using local beef, spring lamb or venison shot on estates just a few miles away when it’s in season. I grew up eating game, my father is still a gamekeeper, and I’ve enjoyed showcasing that on the menu over the last 4-5 months, something I’ll be looking to replicate later this year – I need to keep my growing pack of dogs up to speed somehow! Craig Harvey has been executive head chef at Close House since 2015, having worked across the UK, in Paris and at Claridge’s in London under Gordon Ramsay. The son of a gamekeeper, Craig is passionate about Northumberland produce and you’ll find ingredients sourced from some of the region’s best suppliers on his menus.

THE PRO-FILE

Dean Bailey meets new head professional Matthew Naylor

T

he newest member of the Close House team, head professional Matthew Naylor, hit the ground running in May, filling in at the Have a Heart Trophy having arrived in the UK a few days earlier. “It was a nice introduction, if a busy one,” says Matthew, who arrived at Close House following two years working as a coach in Dubai. “The weather was fantastic for Have a Heart, which was my big fear on the day,” he adds. “It’s been a while since I played in waterproofs so I was thankful for some sunshine.” Matthew’s CV also includes five years at The Montgomerie Dubai having completed his PGA training at Turnberry in Scotland. “I’ve been lucky enough to work at two of the world’s best golf facilities and I knew I wanted to continue working at a club with world-class

facilities and service. Close House ticked those boxes with the PGA Academy, its industry-leading technology and two fantastic golf courses.” Matthew’s career has included work with some of the world’s best players, including European Tour player Steve Webster, with whom he travelled on the Tour, but he is happiest when his pupils are enjoying the game thanks to his support. “I qualified in 2003 and have concentrated on the coaching side of the profession. I get a lot of satisfaction from working with golfers and seeing them enjoy improving their golf – whether that’s picking up a club from the first time or trying to make it to the European Tour. “That’s our job as PGA pros, and I’m looking forward to a busy summer, meeting the members and getting them working on their game at the PGA Academy.”

FUTURE-PROOFING PGA professional Tim Cockill on nurturing young golfers and providing opportunities for future stars

f you visit the PGA Academy and Yearling Course in the evening or during the school holidays, you’ll notice a buzz as children of all ages take their first steps as golfers. Whether they’re starting out on their Junior Passport or attending the Youth Academy, a junior camp or school session, every child is enjoying learning the sport. For PGA professional Tim Cockill, who is responsible for the junior development initiatives, seeing juniors enjoy the game is a real pleasure. “I loved playing golf as a kid and made so many friends - to pass that on is a fantastic opportunity.” The junior pathway begins with basics from chipping and putting to behaviour on the course, and aims to get juniors used to practising at the PGA Academy and out on the Yearling Course. “The introduction of the Yearling Course has improved the programme a huge amount. 46 www.closehouse.com

“The younger ones have a course which looks and plays like the Lee Westwood Colt and Filly courses, but is a more manageable size,” says Tim. Junior golfers can progress into the Youth Academy and the junior camps, and work on their technique further with access to industry-leading technology at the PGA Academy. Each year two juniors are also selected for the Lee Westwood Scholarship, which gives them free membership and a range of benefits, and past recipients have included county players and England Internationals. “A lot of the kids I started working with four years ago have progressed to playing in competitions here and in the county,” says Tim. “We’ve got a clear pathway for every child to work through. The hope is players will follow that, but as long as they enjoy the game and mature with our support, I think we’ve done our job.”

THE FINAL PIECE

With two golf courses endorsed by Lee Westwood, and a PGA Academy, Close House has completed its golf package with the Yearling par-three course

A

sk any good golfer the difference between an average golfer and a good one and they’ll tell you it’s the short game – those shots from inside 100 yards which can make or break your round and hold the key to low scores. At Close House, there’s no excuse for missing out on those opportunities with access to the Yearling Course, nine par-three holes designed and manicured to the same exacting standards as the Lee Westwood Colt and Filly courses.

As well as experienced players looking to sharpen their game, the Yearling Course is the perfect stepping stone between the PGA Academy and the golf course for beginners and juniors. With holes ranging from 35-70 yards and greens protected by bunkers and steep run-off areas, the Yearling is no pushover – playing to the par of 27 is tough - while it’s manageable for the youngest golfers who can work on their game and play with their friends on a golf course their own size.

The Yearling Course is open to members, members’ guests and residents. For more information contact Close House, tel 01661 85 22 55 or visit www.closehouse.com www.closehouse.com 49

FAMILY VALUES The Tilley family tell Dean Bailey why they call Close House their home from home

F

or some golfers, both male and female, a game of golf is a chance to get away from the family. For the Tilleys, it’s the opposite. Rachel and David, and son Alex, 28, had been members of the same golf club before joining Close House, but the move has given them the chance to enjoy the game together at their home club for the first time. “It’s a real joy to be able to play together as a family, on our terms – whether that’s at weekends or during competitions,” says Rachel, “though I do seem to be the main target of most of the jokes and laughter on the golf course. “To be able to enjoy a sport we all love to play, together, is a wonderful experience.” The three play together as often as they can, while David and Rachel play together a couple of times a week. Both picked up the game having played sport throughout their lives, Rachel playing hockey for Northumberland and David playing rugby for Ponteland. With successful sporting backgrounds, it’s no surprise things can get competitive on the golf course. “We do get on very well on the golf course,” says David, before Rachel adds, “but it’s definitely competitive. David is a competitive guy, but he doesn’t show it too much – he just has a knack of getting on with it and quietly winning.” “Rachel lets her frustrations show a little more,” adds David. “It’s very obvious when she thinks you’ve had the rub of the green.” As for Alex, his mum and dad agree that his background as a cricketer might not have been the best for his golf game, though he’s improving

50 www.closehouse.com

quickly thanks to more access to the golf courses than at his previous club, and use of the PGA Academy. “The flexibility here has been a huge help as I can fit golf around running my business, and I’m starting to see the benefits,” he says. For all three, the relaxed atmosphere at Close House led them to moving here, and is a big part of why it has become their home from home. “Rachel and I had both played here as part of corporate days and we enjoyed the courses and were impressed by the atmosphere,” says David. “The more we played, the more we understood what Close House was about and we felt we had to join. The atmosphere is so different to our previous club and it’s been a breath of fresh air.” Rachel adds: “You don’t come into the clubhouse worrying about the way you’re dressed, or go home knowing you can’t get in. “So many golf clubs’ rules are outdated, be it the dress code or when men and women can and can’t play. To find a club which takes all of that stuffiness away has been eye-opening to us and we’re very happy here.” Relaxing in No.19 having played the Lee Westwood Colt Course and enjoyed lunch together, it seems the Tilleys will be part of Close House for a long time. “You turn in that driveway and you feel a total relaxation – it makes the whole experience of coming to the golf club so much better,” says Rachel. “I wouldn’t think of joining anywhere else. We’re very happy here and look forward to spending a lot more time here,” adds David.

THE BUSINESS OF GOLF PETER GRIEVES TELLS DEAN BAILEY WHY CLOSE HOUSE IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS

F

or wealth manager Peter Grieves, senior partner at The Morpeth Practice - part of St James’s Place - a corporate partnership with Close House is a sound investment. A corporate partner for five years, Peter can be found at Close House throughout the summer - whether he’s entertaining clients, meeting new friends as part of the Thursday night nine-hole Texas scramble, which is sponsored by St James’s Place, or with his wife Deborah, son James and daughter Isobel. “When you turn through those gates, whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, you get a buzz. Driving down towards No.19 puts a smile on your face, and you realise how lucky we are to have this club in the North East. It’s a privilege to be a member.” It’s often said that more business deals are done on the golf course than in the boardroom, and for Peter the atmosphere at Close House makes it the perfect place to do business. “The relaxed and informal atmosphere here is a key part of why we are partners. It’s very easy to come and play here and it’s a fantastic environment to network in. “Our clients have often heard about the club and

they want to come and try the Close House experience for themselves. The facilities are world-class, as is the service, and it makes the whole experience of visiting the club a very good one.” As well as joining clients on the golf course and in No.19, Peter is also part of the Thursday Texas scramble, which is held twice a month. “The event has been a fantastic addition to the calendar this year. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people who you wouldn’t bump into normally. “The North East business community is very tightknit and it’s important to be an active part of it. When someone trusts you with their assets, it’s crucial they can look you in the eye and know you’re telling them the truth. There are few better games which showcase those qualities in a person.” When it comes to deciding whether Close House membership is a sound investment, who better to ask? “It’s very difficult to quantify, but in my opinion there are few better places to make contacts in the North East business community. The club is a fabulous, relaxed setting and to be part of Close House alongside our fellow partners is a fantastic relationship to have.” www.closehouse.com 55

CLOSE HOUSE | Meet the team

JONATHAN GREENWOOD General manager It’s been quite a journey since I joined the club 10 years ago as its first PGA professional and golf operations manager. The changes since then have been phenomenal - in No.19, at the PGA Academy and on the golf courses. Graham is passionate about the property continuing to improve and to be part of that is going to be exciting.

BRIAN CLARK

KERRY WATSON

Golf course and estates manager I’ve been here 12 years and I’m still very happy to say I love working at Close House. My team, and all my colleagues here, are a pleasure to work with and to be part of the team delivering Graham Wylie’s vision for Close House and its constant improvement, for the members and the top-class events we host, is a great experience.

Golf operations manager I’ve done a little bit of everything in the last 10 years, having started out pulling pints in the old clubhouse and covering everything from golf to retail. My new role is very different, but it has been fascinating to learn more about the business. My colleagues and the members here are fantastic people, and I love coming into work every day.

CLAIRE BROWN

SALLY HINTON

LOUISE PHILLIPS

Retail manager I joined the Close House team in July 2015 having been a member here for a couple of years. I’ve worked in golf retail before with Ping, and following a break it’s been great to get back into the industry with a club I know so well. It’s a pleasure to work with the guys here, and it’s great to work with so many of the sport’s top brands.

PGA teaching professional There have been some huge changes here in the last six years and to see those developments continue is really exciting. As a PGA pro, it’s great to have the PGA Academy and access to the technology there, and the three courses here. There are never two days the same and it’s great to be part of such a vibrant club.

Golf events executive Looking after the corporate and associate partners here, and making sure they are making the most of their partnerships is really interesting, and its great to work with so many different people. It’s a stunning location to work in too, which makes it really easy to come to work in the morning. www.closehouse.com 61

FOWLER’S FEELING CHAMPION

Aussie Peter Fowler produced a stunning Sunday afternoon performance to lift the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship trophy at Close House

P

layed over four days on the Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House, the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship attracted some of golf’s biggest names in 2015. Australian Peter Fowler lifted the trophy with a four-round total of 12 under-par, including three birdies in his final six holes on Sunday, to finish three shots ahead of Gordon Manson while Englishman Carl Mason finished a further shot back in third place. On collecting the £41,600 first prize, Fowler said: “I was up there from start to finish and to play a couple of rounds with Carl Mason on a weekend, you can’t ask for better than that. After nine holes [having double bogeyed the ninth] I thought I could be caught, but it was time to knuckle down and play golf. “I enjoyed the course. I studied it hard and I knew I had a head start having played it with Scott [Macpherson, who designed the course].” Close House owner Graham Wylie added: “The PGA wanted the course setup so the winner was around 12 under-par, and that’s exactly what we got. The best golfers rose to the top, and with just eight players under-par it proves this course is tough and can stand up to the best golfers in the world.”

CLOSE HOUSE | On the course with...

What’s your favourite hole on the Lee Westwood Colt Course? The view from the top of the course is stunning - looking down from the 13th tee across the valley is spectacular. Favourite hole on the Lee Westwood Filly Course? The 7th is a great hole, played up the hill to a really tough green. With the 8th back down the hill it’s a great little stretch. Your favourite experience at Close House? I’ve been lucky enough to play the course with Lee Westwood, and watching him play the 12th in a tough wind was amazing. I’ve always been fascinated by sportsmen at the top of their game and to watch him hit a long iron against the wind to 6ft was great. Favourite meal at No.19? I’ve always been fond of good fish and chips, and No.19’s is excellent. How much golf do you play? I play a lot of golf and try to get out for a few holes most days. My handicap is up to six at the moment, but I want to get back down this summer.

STEVE HARMISON

F

rom 1996-2013 Steve Harmison rose from the Durham CCC academy to the world’s number one test match bowler. His playing career with Durham and England included wins in the County Championship and multiple Ashes series. A talented golfer, Steve can be found at Close House throughout the summer. Here he shares his love of golf and visiting Close House...

66 www.closehouse.com

Who would be in your dream fourball? I’d like to team up with Tiger Woods - as would anyone who watched him in his prime. I’d also put former Australian captain Ricky Ponting in there, he was the greatest batsman I ever played against and he’s a very good golfer. My friend Ian Straker would make up the four, I’d like to see what two great sportsmen think of his golf game. Favourite courses to visit? As a fan, it would have to be Augusta National. As a links player, Royal Birkdale is a stunning place to play golf and would get my vote. What makes coming to Close House special for you? When you drive through the gates, you instantly feel relaxed. Golf is all about relaxation for me and what’s been created at Close House puts you at ease - it’s a pleasure to visit.
