“I joined the Lloyd Group in 2012, becoming Head of Business at Lloyd Colne in November 2014. With 20 years working with BMW, it is a pleasure to be part of this fantastic team. “We have a friendly atmosphere here and every member of staff is committed to ensuring that each customer who visits the centre has an outstanding experience, whichever department they are visiting, whether it be Sales or Aftersales. “I admire the uncompromised quality and technology that the BMW brand has to offer. In my opinion as a car lover, there is nothing better than sitting in the driving seat of a BMW.”

WELCOME
“At just over six acres, Lloyd Blackpool is the largest site in the Lloyd Group, but we’re still a family business with family values. Our customers are dealing with people, not just a company. Building relationships is key and I live and breathe the job. “I always want the business to succeed, and that means having the right people and giving our customers a five-star experience. We’ve seen a lot of new customers coming to the business and to the brand, and I’m looking forward to seeing them return because of the experience they’ve had with us, whether it’s a purchase or a service. If we get it right first time, customers will make us a one-stop shop.”

Proud to support Rock FM Cash for Kids “We are absolutely delighted that Lloyd Blackpool have adopted Cash For Kids as their charity and know that this partnership will make a real difference to the lives of children living across Lancashire. We have been invited along to some fabulous events and cannot wait to see what other exciting events Lloyd Blackpool are planning. It is wonderful for our charity to be aligned with such a prestigious company that has a real family feel and strong community spirit.” Nikki Thompson, Charity Manager of Cash for Kids.

Proud to support Pendleside Hospice “Over the last 12 months Lloyd BMW and MINI in Colne have supported Pendleside Hospice in many ways. They have held numerous fundraising events at their branch and taken on various challenges, such as the Tour De Lloyd Bike Ride. The team was also heavily involved in our annual Car Raffle which raised a fantastic £26,300! On behalf of everybody at Pendleside I would like to sincerely thank everybody at Lloyd. Our annual running costs now exceed £3.8 million, of which £2.8 million has to be raised in the local area. Without the support of such great local businesses the Hospice would not be able to continue providing care to local people diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses, their families and careers. We look forward to working together again in the future.” Sammi Bracewell, Pendleside Fundraiser.

More than 60 Lloyd Colne customers enjoyed a fantastic customer golf day at Ilkley Golf Club, with 18 holes of golf and an evening meal. “Ilkley Golf Club is where Colin Montgomerie learnt to play golf and it’s a stunning setting,” says Customer Relationship Manager Lindsey Shaw. “It was a great day which everyone really enjoyed, and a lovely way for customers and staff to get to know each other. PREMIER EVENT.
FREEFALL FUNDRAISER. Alison Prowse, a Senior Sales Executive at Lloyd Blackpool, proved herself to be quite the daredevil by jumping out of a plane to raise nearly £3,000 for the Cash for Kids charity. “I volunteered because nobody else would!” laughs Alison, who’s sold more than 2,000 cars in the 11 years she’s been at the centre. “It was one of those things on my bucket list - something I knew I’d only ever do once.” So was it
worth it? “Oh yes. I was supposed to be doing 11,000 feet, but on the day we were told we could upgrade to 15,000 feet and I thought, in for a penny. “You’re in the plane for about 15 minutes and you don’t get a chance to think twice - suddenly you’re in the air free-falling and it literally takes your breath away. It was a surreal experience - I’ll certainly never forget it!”
The Barclays Premier League trophy was the unusual guest of honour at Lloyd Blackpool’s family fun day. More than 200 people came along, many of them having photos taken with the trophy as well as driving on the F1 simulator, where prizes were given to the best virtual drivers. Part of the launch of the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, test drives were available and there was a prize draw to win a BMW for a year. There was an outdoor climbing wall, bouncy castle and target golf from MiniLinks, while woodfired pizzas were provided by the Pizza Principles team.

FESTIVAL SPIRIT.
To celebrate the launch of BMW’s new 7 Series, Lloyd Blackpool and Lloyd Colne each held special launch events to showcase the game-changing new model that offers a window into the future of luxury car design. At Lloyd Blackpool, a curry evening was held for 150 VIPs with a special enclosure built inside the showroom screening information about the car’s numerous technological innovations,
from the gesture-controlled BMW iDrive system to remote control parking via the smart BMW display key. Guided car tours were given and test drive bookings were taken, giving guests the opportunity to be among the first to experience for themselves the sportscar-like agility of the model’s revolutionary carbon core, as well as the leading-edge technology on board.
PUTTING ON THE RITZ IN HUSBAND’S MEMORY. Lloyd Blackpool’s Beverley Davis is planning the region’s third Black Tie and Diamonds Charity Ball after raising nearly £17,000 through two previous events, both supported by Lloyd Blackpool. Beverley, who works on the centre’s reception desk when staff are on leave, lost her husband Gren three years ago to the bone marrow cancer myeloma. Her sons - Michael, a professional trumpeter, and Brett, an events manager - have also helped to organise the events. “They’ve also raised a lot of additional money through various sponsored bike rides. Our aim is to raise more than £30,000 by the end of 2016,” says Beverley.

THE FUTURE OF LUXURY.
07
Part of an on-going commitment to give back to the local community, Lloyd Blackpool has sponsored several cultural events in the region. Formerly known as Lytham Proms, Lytham Festival is Lancashire’s largest live music event, attracting tens of thousands of spectators every year. The Proms Arena on the green was the centrepiece of the week-long multi-venue extravaganza including outdoor cinema, a family-friendly ‘Festival of Stories’, acoustic stages, literary lunches, a traditional jazz venue, street performance and a brand-new comedy tent. As one of the main sponsors, Lloyd Blackpool supplied cars for staff and performers including singers Billy Ocean, Elaine Paige, Marti Pellow and Saturday night headliners McBusted. On a smaller scale, but no less important, Our Big Gig, held in Poulton-le-Fylde’s Jean Stansfield Memorial Park, attracted more than 3,000 people for a day of free fun and music which raised more than £4,500 towards the redevelopment of the park’s children’s play area. Lloyd Blackpool supported the event for the second year and sponsored the Young New Talent award, won by 15-year-old singer and guitarist Patrick Ralphson.

FAMILY VALUES. Discover the story behind Lloyd Group, one of the UK’s most successful family‑owned firms.
08 LLOYD / ISSUE 01
The Lloyd Group is a rare breed. It is not often that large global brands are represented by family-run, local businesses, but that is still very much the case here. Founded by Ralph Lloyd in 1964 and now run by his sons Bryan and Barry, the Lloyd business continues to grow, without losing sight of its roots or its values, showcasing premium motoring and machinery marques. Indeed, the third Lloyd generation is now active in the company, ensuring a bright future and continued evolution, going from strength to strength. One of the keys to the success of the Group is that, when it has grown through the acquisition of other centres, it is family-run businesses that have been added. This ethos of providing the finest customer experience with a local touch is at the heart of the Lloyd philosophy, which is clearly valued by its many loyal customers. From its roots in Cockermouth, where the original BMW centre was established in 1976, to its expansion from tractors to motors in Carlisle, where it still has BMW, MINI and other prestige franchises today, the Lloyd name is now known across the North of England and South of Scotland for its customer-focused and friendly approach, regardless of whether you are buying a car, a motorbike, a tractor or a lawnmower. The latest addition to the Lloyd organisation is Lloyd BMW & MINI South Lakes, formerly Bateman of Lindale. In a stunning location, as befits a centre which now references the Lake
District in its name, this locally owned BMW and MINI retailer has been an integral part of the landscape near Grange-over-Sands for more than 26 years. Simply taking a test drive is a pleasure. With a successful team of experienced staff, supplemented with some new arrivals, the South Lakes retail centre has already become an integral part of the Lloyd Group, delivering the exceptional levels of customer service with which the Lloyd name is synonymous. The BMW and MINI centres in Colne and Blackpool were also family-run businesses Prestons and Woodman respectively. Over the past eight years since they came under the Lloyd name, both retailers have continued to develop, regularly achieving BMW’s ‘Holy Grail’ of five-star customer service standards and refurbishing their premises to ensure that their surroundings match their customers’ high expectations. Supporting their local communities through sponsorships and charity connections, such as Rock FM’s Cash for Kids and Lytham Festival, all the staff at Lloyd Lancashire, as the two centres are collectively known, are focused on providing a friendly and welcoming experience to all guests to their showrooms. Last, but by no means least, is Lloyd Newcastle, formerly Fawdington. Part of the Lloyd family since 1998, Lloyd Newcastle has recently extended its premises to showcase the evergrowing range of new BMWs as well as more than 150 approved used cars. It is often the case that big does not mean better, but in the case of Lloyd Group, the growth from one to 12 centres (six BMW and six MINI) has enhanced the firm’s professional yet local approach, bringing continuous improvement and, by employing local people, a drive to serve our centres’ communities effectively and with pride.

BMW M2 – New model. The design of the BMW M2 Coupé is inspired by BMW’s illustrious history in motor racing, signified by its low front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks with M gills, 19-inch aluminium wheels in familiar M double-spoke design and a low, wide rear with M-specific twintailpipe exhaust system. The interior, meanwhile,
possesses rare quality and sporting ambition. Sports seats, an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever ensure BMW M2 drivers are in control at all times. The compact M inline 6-cylinder engine in the BMW M2 Coupé offers impressive proof of the car’s strength, guaranteeing a breathtaking driving experience every time.
30 Years of BMW xDrive. Until recently, we’ve perhaps taken for granted that our customers understand the term BMW xDrive. Put simply, this is the four-wheel-drive system that features on more than 20 models across the range, including the plug-in hybrid BMW i8. But it’s not a recent innovation, having first been introduced on the BMW 325i “Allrad”, 30 years ago. Today, around one in three BMWs sold around the world are equipped with xDrive, which is included on models ranging from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. With the BMW xDrive four-wheel-drive system, each axle uses its traction to the maximum. In difficult conditions, such as wet or icy roads, more torque has to be applied to the road. That’s when Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) comes into operation. In addition to improving traction, the system recognises the first signs of over- and under-steering. Within a tenth of a second it distributes up to almost 100% of the engine torque to the front or rear axle via the transmission and an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch before returning to the normal 40:60 distribution ratio. In short, it handles every twist and turn in the road, whatever the weather.

Elise Rana Hopper talks thrills, spills and turning ambition into reality with entrepreneur and BMW driver Rob Gamble.
ON THE ROAD
BRIGHT SPARK.
“I always wanted to drive,” he recalls. “I used to sit on my dad’s knee and steer the car on the beach at Southport when I was a kid, and I had my first lesson on my 17th birthday. It’s funny because my one-year-old son is the same - anything with an engine makes his eyes light up. I bought a quad bike to entertain the kids at his naming party and it made his day. Genetics that’s all I can put it down to.” Another early ambition fulfilled is that of being his own boss. A time-served mechanical engineer, a move to a sales role saw him gain experience with electrical wholesalers across the North West before he was brought in to run the long-established firm Blackpool Electrical Traders. Recognising its potential for development, in 2006 he orchestrated a management buyout along with its associate company Skelmersdale Electrical Distributors. The group has since grown its product range, geographical spread and activity exponentially, yet its biggest leap was to come in the form of importing its own brand, Luxlite. “There was a big hole in the market and for the first time none of the big players were really ruling the roost,” says Rob of the technologically advanced LED products he sources in China for the Luxlite range, which is now sold through one of the biggest distributors in the country. “The first LEDs weren’t great, but I now sell lamps that give nearly the same effect as halogens. And finding products like that has come with time, with putting in the groundwork. We’re not a huge company, but we’ve got really good relationships with our suppliers and can bring a product to the UK within two weeks from the date of order. If you ask us to get something made, the
ON THE ROAD 14 LLOYD / ISSUE 01
answer is normally yes. We started with 10 items now we’ve got 5,000.” Hard work has paid off with success, which has in turn afforded Rob, who lives in Broughton, the ability to indulge his passion for cars. “Before I had my own business, BMW was out of my reach, but I knew which ones I wanted,” he says, fondly recalling his first – a 330ci in Imola red. A long-standing relationship with the brand was cemented at Lloyd Blackpool with an M3 Convertible - and a 3 Series for his mother. “My mum is really into cars, but she works with me too - so I always go car shopping with her to make sure she buys the right things,” he laughs. “She’s just bought a new 5 Series from Lloyd.” For Rob and his animal-loving family - both his wife and young daughter are keen riders with three horses between them, and the converted farm the Gambles call home has fields that have been known to stump the 22inch wheels of a Range Rover - there are practicalities to consider, and in addition to a 5 Series Tourer, they are about to upgrade their X5. “We’re just back from a trip to France in the X5, with two kids and the car bursting with luggage but at the other end you don’t feel like you’ve been too far,” he says. “I like my kids in a big car - nice and safe. But I also drive my cars hard - and if you want a 4x4 but you still want it to drive like a sports car, there’s nothing like the X5.” Travelling for work these days is as likely to mean the Emirates A380 to the Far East as hitting the motorway, but when Rob does take to the road it’s usually long-haul - so the car’s important. He may joke that top-spec features are a necessity, not a luxury - “you can’t have a car without toys, can you?” - but he’s very serious about the fact that the car itself must be right. “It’s something to be proud of,” he says. “All the lads who work for me have BMWs too - I like to look after them, give them decent things and make sure they’ve got nice cars. We’re a young company, with fresh, forward-thinking ideas - and I think BMW is a brand that reflects that.” Driving for pleasure is something he rarely has
time for, though he says he and a friend - himself an M6 owner - bought motorbikes recently, and they regularly ride out together. “As long as I’ve got the best leathers on, my wife’s pretty relaxed about it - she knows it’s my way of relieving stress and that’s fine. I’m not really a sporting person - I don’t even watch motor sports. I have to be the one doing the driving!” It all comes back to the thrill of the drive. “The grunt that you get from an M4 - it’s like a proper racing car. I’m a bit of a thrill-seeker, to be honest - the faster the better. But I work hard and what’s the point of doing all that I do, with the stress and risk involved, if I can’t have the cars I want?”

Take to the road. With its dynamic, upright proportions, the third-generation BMW X5 is instantly recognisable as part of the BMW X range. But it also has several new design features that further underscore its majestic appearance and unbeatable versatility.
THE BIG 30. ON THE ROAD
Elise Rana Hopper meets businessman Graham Winterbottom – one of just 300
people worldwide to own a very special limited-edition BMW M5, released for the model’s 30th birthday.
16 LLOYD / ISSUE 01
Thirty years: it’s quite a milestone. And when BMW marked the 30th anniversary of its iconic M5 super saloon with a special edition limited to just 300, it was only right that Graham Winterbottom - a loyal customer for even longer than three decades - should find himself driving one. One of only 30 in the country, the M5 30 Jahre joins a long list of BMWs which have played an essential part in the long career of this entrepreneur, whose successful wholesale schoolwear business, Accrington-based Graham Winterbottom Schoolwear, also recently celebrated its third decade. With a top speed of 190mph, the 4.4 litre twinturbo V8 boasts 592bhp, 516lb ft of torque and a 0-62mph time reduced to just 3.9 seconds, so despite the £19,000 premium over the standard M5 pushing the price tag above £90,000, the ‘instant classic’ status built into the 30 Jahre meant that every one of the UK allocation was quickly snapped up. This is quite a step up from Graham’s first BMW, purchased 35 years ago. “I thought if I could afford a BMW I’d arrived,” he says of that first one. “The first was a 520, and I’ve never been interested in anything else since. The cars and the people we buy from have always been extremely good. Lloyd Colne is a fantastic operation they’re efficient, they’re helpful and they’re down to earth. “My family and I have dealt with them over the
years and they have always looked after us. My father was a farmer, and he used to say that you buy the man. You couldn’t know how good the animals were, but if you knew the man, you knew what he was selling would be right. That’s the way I’ve run my business, and that’s why we’ve stuck with BMW. “My wife has the M2 Coupé, our son has a 5 Series 2 litre diesel M Sport, our daughter-inlaw has an M135, and I’ve also got an i3 that I call the milk float - you just put your foot on the gas, take the brake off and go. You never have any problems with BMW, they just run and run.” Reliability is key when your job demands you cover 35,000 miles a year. Having joined a clothing company straight from grammar school at

BMW M5 30 Jahre.
From one pair of trousers to an international concern with a global supply trail, Graham Winterbottom Schoolwear has come a very long way. The clothing industry, he says, has changed much over the years. “You can get a supply trail where you’re dealing with a South Korean company that buys its fabric from China, manufacturing the garments in Bangladesh.

the age of 16, progressing to going on the road as a salesman just two years later, Graham believes in building a career from the ground up. “I started out sweeping up - it was the only way to learn the business,” he says. “When my wife and I started our own manufacturing business, we started with just one product - a pair of black school trousers. It was all about quality and price.”

This is not only the most powerful BMW M5 ever to emerge from series production under the auspices of BMW, but also the most powerful production car in the history of the brand. It cuts a dynamic, head-turning figure, its striking BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver metallic paint accentuating its elegantly muscular form. The kidney grille surround, gills with the special 30 Jahre badge on the front wing, door handle inserts and twin exhaust tailpipes all come in black chrome. The same is true of the 20-inch bi-colour light-alloy wheels.

It’s moved on.” And he credits the importance of technology to the growth of his business. “The mobile phone has been a lifesaver. When I was away from home a lot selling, it meant people could get hold of me. I bought one of the first handsets to come out, a Motorola that cost me £2,500 and was fitted into my car. It was a big handset and you had to stop to make a call, but it was one of the most important factors in helping my business go forward. “The first week I got it, the Conservative party conference was on in Blackpool so all I got was the engaged tone, because that was using up all the signal. You forget now what it was like. “And one of the most useful developments in recent years has been Skype, which means that wherever you are in the world you can talk to someone - it makes a big difference being able to look people in the eye.” On cue, his iPhone rings. He lets it go to voicemail for now. “I’m only supposed to be working two days, but even when I’m off the phone still rings,” he says. “I’m retiring completely soon and that’ll be the most difficult side of it - cutting my connections with people I’ve worked with for years. I know it won’t be easy, and I’ve got a lot of adjusting to do. We’ll just have to see how it goes.” For Graham and his wife Maureen, who live in the Ribble Valley, retirement will leave more time for existing pastimes including their much-loved acre of garden and their passion for travel. “I like to travel, and only do so now for holidays,” he says. “We’ve already been round the world twice, virtually.” And although they have particularly enjoyed far-flung destinations such as Australia, the couple are nonetheless always glad to get home. “The weather isn’t always the best but where we live, in the Ribble Valley, is very lovely. Though because it’s so rural my wife worries that if anything happens to either of us, who would look after the garden?”
M POWER.
Then, of course, there’ll be more time to enjoy the M5. “I’ve also got an i3 so I’m not putting many miles on the M5,” says Graham, adding, however, that the 30 Jahre won’t go the way of the most recent one to make the news - the last of the US’s allotted 30, which was sold earlier this year to NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, and went straight into a museum to remain un-driven, which seems a tragic waste. Graham may not need to clock up the same miles as he once did, but knowing the country back to front still gives him inspiration to get behind the wheel. “I can set off from home, go up the middle of England and drive all the way up to Scotland without hitting a motorway - or get up to Carlisle and go through the Pennines. There aren’t many places I haven’t been to, and I still love driving, particularly now I have the BMW M5 30 Jahre,” he says, with a broad smile.
Now in its fifth generation, the BMW M5 Saloon still embodies pure athleticism.Uncompromising performance places it convincingly at the top of its class as it masters every challenge. When the BMW M TwinPower Turbo eightcylinder petrol engine and the high-performance suspension show their true character, this is a saloon that bears motorsport genes.

The country set think just as carefully about their weekend wear as they do about their city look, pulling off an enviably cool country vibe with every bit as much style as they do their designer city suits and shoes. This season’s country style is all about multi-textures such as tweed, knits, leather, wax and faux fur, topped off, always, with an outback leather hat. Team your look with a smart off-roader such as the BMW X6 here, and a friendly horse (ours is called Ponty and he used to jump fences for a living) and you’ve got the look.

ON THE BALL. Former England and British Lions rugby captain Bill Beaumont talks cars, family and sport with Dean Bailey.
“I think the new model is fantastic,” enthuses former rugby and BBC Question of Sport captain Bill Beaumont when we catch up a few days after his visit to see the new BMW 7 Series. “I’ve been lucky enough to drive one or two 7 Series in the past and the latest incarnation is stunning. I’d quite like the chance to sit in the back and have somebody drive it for me, actually,” he adds with a laugh. A long-time personal and business customer of Lloyd Blackpool (part of the Lloyd BMW Group), it’s no surprise Beaumont is enthusiastic about the latest release. “They are beautiful cars, and the new BMW 7 Series has everything you could ever want. It’s very impressive indeed.” Having owned various BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, plus a couple of BMW cabriolets, he has found a firm favourite in the BMW X5. His sixth BMW X5 is currently in for a service, having spent a month travelling around the
UK – from Newcastle to Exeter – as Beaumont welcomed rugby fans from around the world to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in his role as Chairman of the Rugby Football Union – the sport’s governing body and host of the tournament. “I attended something like 23 games in total, and it was an incredible experience. To host a Rugby World Cup in England was a great occasion and hopefully it inspires more people to get involved in the game. “English fans, and the people involved in the game, like to run tournaments well and enjoy themselves, which we did. It was an outstanding World Cup, even if it was a little disappointing for England.” Having exited the tournament in the group stage, Beaumont is optimistic when he

and the game has been a big part of my life.” Playing in the amateur era, Beaumont balanced his commitments on the field with running his business, Bill Beaumont Textiles, based in Chorley, which he ran for 30 years before passing the reins to his eldest son Daniel. “The biggest challenge of the amateur era was training in your own time and getting up for work every morning. I built everything, including my business, around playing rugby.” Beaumont led England to the Grand Slam in 1980, an event he still looks back on fondly. “I retired at 29 so my playing days weren’t quite as long as many of the guys now. Winning the Grand Slam for England in 1980 was one of the great highlights. To captain the British and Irish Lions was also an amazing honour.” Beaumont lives with his wife Hilary, who drives a MINI, a short drive from Lloyd Blackpool in Lytham St Annes. “We’re close to the coast,

considers the future of the national team. “The team can learn from the experience. We have a lot of young players and I think the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019 will be a good time for English rugby. I’m sure England will be a threat.” Beaumont’s playing career included 34 England caps, 21 of those as captain, as well as captaining the British and Irish Lions and seven test matches. The Beaumont family connection with the game continues - the youngest of his three sons, Josh, 23, plays for Sale Sharks in the Aviva Premiership, and has just been picked for the England Six Nations squad. Beaumont’s middle son Sam, 30, plays in the National League. “I am really enjoying being a part of the RFU, putting something back into the game. I’ve been Chairman for three years now and every day I try to ensure the job is in a better position than when I picked it up. I’ve got a maximum of three years left as Chairman and my ambition is to see the England team succeed.

which I love,” he says “Lancashire is my home and I like Lancastrians – we have a good sense of humour and we aren’t frightened of laughing at ourselves. “We’re also close to our son Daniel, who is expecting his first child, and Sam, who has our first granddaughter, Annie. It’s a nice time. There aren’t many girls in the Beaumont family so there’s no doubt Annie will rule the roost.” As well as being close to his family, Beaumont is close to the championship golf course Royal Lytham & St Annes – a host venue for the Open Championship. “I play golf as often as I can and I thoroughly enjoy it, although I’m not very good. Golf tends to tie in well with the rugby season and I’ll get a couple of games in every week if I’m lucky. “Hilary’s a keen golfer too, as well as loving being a granny and still being involved far more than I am with the business.” With a growing family and a set of golf clubs to carry, it’s no wonder Beaumont is fond of the BMW X5. “It’s really an all-rounder,” he enthuses. “There’s room for golf clubs, and grandchildren. I’ve had six of them and I’m very happy in the X5.” Although over recent years he’s always driven a nice car given the chance, things weren’t always that way. “I had some rubbish cars as a young man,” he says. “My first car was an Austin Cambridge A55 Farina. It had a manual start and was grey with a red piping - not a good pulling machine! Since becoming my own boss, I’ve tried to have a decent motor.” On retiring from rugby at the age of 29, Beaumont was approached by BBC1’s A Question of Sport, which was looking for new captains. “It was a chance invitation to become a captain, and I ended up doing it for 13 years. I worked alongside Willie Carson, Emlyn Hughes and Ian Botham and we all had a lot of fun. “They were great company and we enjoyed taking the mickey out of one another more than anything else. We’d record a couple of episodes every other Sunday and it wasn’t too tough to prepare for as I always enjoyed watching and
reading about sport. All three of our boys were brought up going to the recording of A Question of Sport every other Sunday and they loved it too.” With rugby still a big part of his life, plus a growing family and a sporting ambition to satisfy of the golf course, there seems to be a lot keeping Beaumont busy. “It’s a lovely time. My priorities are switching more towards my grandchildren now and I’m very much looking forward to the next arrival. I want to continue to do my very best in everything I do – whether that’s with the RFU, on the golf course, or with my family.”

PERFECT MATCH. From fitness inspiration to marriage material, Parts Manager Chris O’Dea has got more than just job satisfaction from his 13 years at Lloyd Blackpool.
“Yeah, I think I’m getting to like it here,” jokes Chris O’Dea as he talks about his wedding to Lindsey, his girlfriend of eight years, who he met right here. “She called in for an MOT and that was it really. I think I’m the first one to take customer relations this far!” With no question of the brand the family cars are likely to be drawn from, Chris feels privileged to work for a marque he admires.
ON THE ROAD 33 LLOYD / ISSUE 01
“We get a lot of people saying they’d love to work for BMW. It’s a brand that everyone aspires to - the technology, the way they look, the way they drive - you get spoilt,” he says. Currently the owner of a BMW 4 Series with dreams of one day having “a collection of M cars racked up in the garage”, Chris inherited a love of cars from his dad, an engineer and blacksmith, and as a child used to help him out as he tinkered away in the garage. Today, Chris is happy to leave that side of things to the professionals, although his own interests have been just as consuming. “When we were younger, my brother and I decided one day we’d start going to the gym - it was a time when you saw someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger and thought ‘I wanna look like him!’ It doesn’t quite work that way of course but we just kept on with it.” After several years of regular weight-training, a desire for increased fitness led him to take up cycling and now, in addition to his gym-going, he’s out on his bike several times a week.
“It did become a bit of an obsession,” he admits. “I’ve lost about three stone over the course of the last 10 years. As the cycling took over I gradually got lighter, fitter and stronger . When I bought my road bike three years ago my girlfriend said I’d never use it - I’ve never been off it since.” Through regular club meetings and sportives he’s no stranger to big miles, but maintains that cycling is still just a hobby. “I just fit it in when I can - but I do love it. You feel good because you’re getting fitter and stronger. You get such a buzz when you see a massive climb and you think you’ll never get up it then you get to the top and you’ve done it. You get the miles in and that’s another achievement.” Though he swears he isn’t solely responsible for it, there’s a definite workplace culture of health and fitness at Lloyd Blackpool that helps keep him inspired. “We rib each other every day about who’s having what for dinner, how far you ran, how far you swam, how many miles you did, what you lifted; it’s just good banter but we do bounce off each other and egg each other on to do that little bit more!” So what might be the next challenge? He admits to being inspired by the free-fall skydiving exploits of a former workmate, last seen dangling off the underside of an aircraft. “We were driving up to Lancaster the other weekend and there were people skydiving - I was just watching them falling out of the sky thinking, ‘that looks alright’. Then Lindsey said, ‘you’re probably going to end up doing that next, aren’t you?’ and you know, I probably am.”

GENIUS, ME?
Danny says: “With a bigger shell than a 1 Series, this is an absolute hoot to drive.”
Lloyd Colne’s Danny Ballantyne reflects on his role as a Product Genius.
34 LLOYD / ISSUE 01
No sooner have we shaken hands than Danny Ballantyne, Product Genius at Lloyd Colne, suggests a better piece of kit than I have for recording interviews. “It’s part of my job,” he grins. It’s a job well suited to the amiable BMW expert, whose passion for cars spurred him to complete both a fast-fit technician qualification and an advanced driving course while he was honing his customer service skills as a team leader and duty manager in the retail sector. Describing himself as “customer-focused, but with a massive love for anything fast that gets your heart rate going,” he admits that the title of ‘Product Genius’ could set anyone up for a fall. “When you walk into the supermarket with ‘genius’ written on your jacket, people give you a bit of a quizzical look,” he says, with a smile. Working with the sales team to provide a fuller customer experience, Danny’s role is to identify each customer’s individual needs and then match them to a model. “On a test drive, I’ll show them the features and benefits they’ll want to know about,” he says. “Every car has a lot on it, but if you tailor the information to the specific customer, to suit their needs and requirements, it’s a more personalised service.” Once the formalities are completed with a Sales Executive at the centre, Danny’s next role is to complete the handover at vehicle collection. “I get about an hour with the customer to go through every single button and gadget in the car, to make sure they’re happy and that they’ll be able to really
enjoy the car they’ve just bought. It’s interesting to see the reaction on a customer’s face when they realise what they’ve actually got and that it’s a lot more than they expected. It’s very satisfying.” Confident that he knows the cars ‘inside out and back to front’, Danny’s personal favourite in the BMW range is the M135i. “It’s the smallest car in the range, but it can compete with the M5s, M4s and M3s - it punches well above its weight and it’s just an incredibly fun car. It’s a bit like me really, it’s quite deceptive!”
i8. Danny says: “This is BMW’s flagship model and will hold this title for years to come. Part spaceship, part supercar, it’s no wonder Jeremy Clarkson took a second drive. The combination of technological advancement and design shows where BMW’s new benchmark is set.”
Danny says: “Probably the best fun on 4 wheels you can get for the money - with 335 horsepower through a proper manual gearbox it’s the most driver-focused small hot hatch out there. It may be small, but it packs a bite like a rottweiler.”
M3. Danny says: “Easily the all-time best M3 - still a brutal monster when you’re behind the wheel, but with BMW’s new investment in technology shining through.”

Danny says: “An aesthetically pleasing body style matched with an oil burner that has more torque than an M4 makes for one hell of a package. Use launch control in this beast and the 4WD system allows for absolutely relentless power delivery all the way to 155mph. This will give an M4 a good run for its money in the wet too.”

BMW 3 SERIES. The BMW 3 Series is one of BMW’s most successful models, and it’s easy to see why. It’s 40 years since the original burst onto the scene, and it’s still one of the models the team and I are always eager to see, anticipating how the latest version will match up to its predecessors. With the latest models, we’ve noticed improved suspension and more precise steering, which means you can enter any corner with confidence and leave it with a smile. A new generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo engines combines performance and efficiency in equal measure and with lower CO₂ emissions the new BMW 3 Series will appeal even more to the company car driver. Plus, it’s available with classic rear-wheel-drive or BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive, depending on the model.
M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé. The joint launch of the new BMW M3 Saloon and the new BMW M4 Coupé reveals a new interpretation of the high-performance sports car. The BMW M4 Coupé is poised to take over the success story of the M3 Coupé, while the BMW M3 Saloon is the new four-door variant. Low-slung and broad-set, they share a finely balanced stance. M-specific design underlines their high-performance sports car capability. Large air intakes and air curtains at the front end, exposed carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium body components, and the diffuser at the muscular rear end are not merely added design extras - they also fulfil roles in terms of aerodynamics, cooling and weight saving. Plus, both the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé cover the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.1 seconds (with the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission).

BMW X5. The BMW X5 was the original Sports Activity Vehicle and, now in its third generation, it has once again set the benchmark for powerful design, interior spaciousness and luxury, versatility, driving pleasure, efficiency and innovative equipment features. With the emphasis firmly on driving enjoyment and efficiency, the newgeneration V8 engine, for example, fitted in the BMW X5 xDrive50i, now develops 10% more power than its predecessor and combines this with a 16% reduction in average fuel consumption. Taking efficiency even further is the new BMW X5 with eDrive, which launched in November 2015. This plug-in hybrid version of the X5 becomes BMW’s first Sports Activity Vehicle to combine its intelligent allwheel-drive train with an innovative plug-in hybrid system. Same beast different diet!

BMW 1 SERIES. The new BMW 1 Series 3-door and 5-door have been extensively modified since the model’s introduction in 2005 and their appeal remains universal, from first-time buyers to young families and retired couples. The BMW 1 Series’ sporty character remains to the fore, with key elements of the exterior reshaped and redesigned. Inside, the high standard specification includes auto air con, rain sensor, BMW Professional radio and iDrive operating system. The new models have a revised engine line-up and additional measures designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, leading the way in the introduction of new BMW EfficientDynamics technology. For efficiency, we suggest the BMW 116d ED Plus 5-door, with 83mpg and CO₂ emissions of 89g/km you’ll benefit from no road tax.

The current generation of this impressive all-rounder remains faithful to its tradition, demonstrating exceptional comfort and remarkable flexibility. The result is a vehicle that’s as suited to everyday driving as it is to more challenging journeys. While the exterior exudes typical BMW X character, the interior inspires thanks to high quality materials. The BMW X3 also impresses with its economical BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engines.

The Lloyd Group is a well-connected family of centres, but few of its team members can claim quite the same knowledge of the network as Lloyd Colne’s James Tudor, Neil Field and Alex Whittaker. In June 2015, the three undertook the first ‘Tour De Lloyd’, a gruelling 228-mile bike ride visiting all the Lloyd BMW and MINI sites in two days, raising more than £1,100 for charity in the process. The ride was the brainchild of Sales Executive James Tudor, the keenest cyclist of the three and the first to finish. “He regularly rides 200 miles a week,” says Neil Field, Lloyd Colne’s Service Reception Manager. “Which means he’s cycling as far as most motorists drive over a year.” Business Manager Alex Whittaker is a regular cyclist, but even for him the punishing first day was double the distance he’d ridden in a single stretch before. “On some of those long stretches of A road

going through the Lake District you ride for an hour and you don’t know where the time went. Everything was hurting on the ride and I knew I just had to dig in. You just get into a rhythm but you’re looking down at your legs thinking, ‘don’t give up!’ “Thankfully, we were lucky with good weather - and hearing that we had donations coming through even as we were going along gave us a bit more momentum.” Having had a friend cared for at Pendleside Hospice, the nominated charity, semi-retired driver for Lloyd Colne Alan Vickerman was proud to be asked to drive the support car - a former demo model X3 fully sign written, stickered up and loaded with supplies. “Alan did a fantastic job,” says Neil. It was Tour de France-esque. But without certain levels of fitness - or speed!” The show of support across the Group also bolstered their determination. Having set off from Colne at 7.30am, James covered the 138 miles to Cockermouth in 11½ hours and Alex and Neil were there in 12 hours. They were met there by two of the managers, who had stayed behind with oranges and home-baked flapjacks. The following day, after a hair-raising final stretch that Managing Director Bryan Lloyd later described as ‘dicing with death’, the cyclists reached Lloyd Newcastle where Head of Business Michelle Caveney - the former Head of Business at Colne - managed to magic up some beers to add to their welcome spread. Neil may have since purposefully sold his bike to avoid being drawn into any more such ventures, but another challenge hasn’t been ruled out once Alex has recovered from a recent injury - having done 228 miles in two days unscathed, he promptly broke his collarbone while out on his road bike. “James wants to do the trip again, this time in 24 hours there and back and including a visit to the new Lloyd South Lakes centre at Grangeover-Sands. “It sounds like complete insanity to me,” says Neil. “I’ll be happy to drive the support van.”

BMW X1. Launched in October 2015 with a body design straight out of the BMW X model mould, the interior has more passenger and luggage space, a cutting edge feel and the solid engineering functionality you expect in a high calibre car. Its sporty performance is matched by efficiency enhanced by the latest-generation four-cylinder engines and gearboxes. With consumption and emissions reduced by up to 17%, this is proving itself to be a high flyer. New chassis technology delivers leading dynamics and enhanced ride comfort, and with variable Sports Steering and Dynamic Damper Control also available as options along with M Sport suspension, there’s plenty of choice. This bigger, sportier and more efficient version is now one of the most popular models in the range.
BMW 7 Series. The new BMW 7 Series is the definitive BMW - elegant and a dream to drive. Its carbon core is dramatically lighter for fuel economy and sports car agility. It can be automatically parked in and out of lateral spaces via remote control parking, and the rear compartment Executive Lounge features massage function and Vitality Programme, Sky Lounge Panorama glass roof, Welcome Light carpet, Ambient highlight, and smartphone holder with inductive charging station. Standout innovations in operating system and driver assistance include the extension of the iDrive system to include touch display and BMW Gesture Control, plus Touch Command, the new BMW Head-Up Display, cross traffic warning, steering and lane control assistant, active side collision protection, and Surround View with 3D View. The result was classleading dynamics which are now extended into the new version of these models. They take another leap forward in dynamics, design and efficiency, successfully combining the iconic features of the BMW X family of exclusivity, robustness, agility and everyday usability with a solid commitment to the high performance that defines an M car. BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer. When BMW launches a new model, you know it’s going to be special, and this car is just that and a good deal more. This model is especially strong in meeting the requirements of young families, with lots of flexible space that can change as you need it. The world’s first premium compact model to offer up to seven seats, if you suddenly need more space it will be there. Its generous luggage compartment can be extended from 645 to 805 litres, and with the rear-seat backrests down, this rises to an impressive 1,905 litres. The standard sliding rear seat bench with 40:20:40 split backrest folds down at the press of a button to allow three child seats to be fitted. There’s also an optional third row of seats which can be lowered into the loading floor, and handy storage options for all three rows of seats, as well as rails on the frontseat backrests with fold-out tables attached. JULIE CAMPBELL. “I don’t think there’s anything I don’t like about my job,” says Lloyd Colne Assistant Parts Manager Julie Campbell with a smile. “I’ve worked here nearly 20 years, I’m like part of the furniture!” Having worked in retail, she came to Lloyd Colne to try something different, starting as a van driver and working her way up. With a head for numbers, Julie’s role involves stock analysis, statistics and dealing with suppliers - and it’s a day that starts early. “I’m here from 6.45am checking all the parts that have come in overnight, working out what belongs to whom, getting the van driver organised,” she says. Julie’s long-standing service speaks volumes about employee satisfaction at Lloyd. “It’s like a family. Reception Supervisor Lisa started at Lloyd Colne 10 years ago, working on reception, in marketing and then as a Service Advisor before leaving to start her own training business. I enjoy meeting new customers and welcoming back those who I’ve got to know well. “The challenge of working on reception is that it’s always very busy, but that’s what I enjoy - you’re at the forefront of the centre so you get involved in a lot of different situations and you have to be efficient, accurate in your message taking and good at multi-tasking, but there’s never a dull moment.”
CRAIG CAVANAGH. JOHN EDGE. “I would describe myself as an experienced all-rounder, having begun my career as a trainee with Lex Motor Company in Manchester almost 40 years ago selling British Leyland cars. During a varied career I have been involved in sales with a number of manufacturers, rising through the ranks to Senior Sales Management positions, and finding the time to be a Business Manager back in 1985. I have been back with the BMW brand almost nine years as a Sales Executive, having been with the franchise for a total of 20 years. “During my time I have seen many changes within the motor trade in terms of improved products, increased finance options, and improved customer protection and regulation of contracts. I enjoy the people side of the business. The culture at Lloyd is good - our attitude is that if you look after the customer, the profit will look after itself. It’s why we have so much repeat business, which is always the big test.”
When you have a thing for BMWs, spending your day maintaining them is a pleasure, and BMW Technician Craig landed his ideal job early on. Having started as an apprentice after he left school, he’s now approaching his tenth year in the job at Lloyd Colne, and describes his role as ‘a bit of everything’ from diagnostics to replacing components. “I enjoy the job and like the people I work with, which certainly helps! It’s a good atmosphere,” he says, adding that the cars themselves are probably his favourite aspect of his work. “I like cars - so getting to work on them is something I enjoy doing, not just a job. My dream car has to be a BMW and it’s probably the M3.”

EXPERIENCE. LLOYD BLACKPOOL WHO MAKE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE EXTRA SPECIAL.
PEOPLE: BLACKPOOL 43
Motors are in the blood for Lloyd Blackpool Sales Executive Paul, nephew of world championship motorcycle racer Derek Woodman, who set up the garage that is today Lloyd Blackpool. Once no stranger to the likes of the Isle of Man TT himself, Paul’s own racing days may be over, but when it comes to work, he still likes things fast-paced. “When you’re busy it’s the best job in the world - the day goes quickly, everything’s buzzing along and you don’t have time to stop. “An early start each day, good product knowledge and organisational skills help us stay prepared for customers who are often very well-informed. You never know how any day’s going to pan out - things change in a nano-second. Every day is different - it’s not like being stuck in an office doing the same thing all the time.”
PAUL FENTON. RENA MACGEEVER. It’s seven years since Rena left behind a career in fashion retail to join the reception team at Lloyd Blackpool, and she still finds similarities, including the fact that both roles keep her on her toes, and they even involve some of the same customers. “I know a lot of customers really well and we’re on first name terms. I’ve been here long enough to feel as if I was born here, and I really do love it. It’s a busy reception and there is no typical day. It’s made by the people I work with.” The happy owner of a BMW 1 Series, Rena’s entire family are brand-loyal from her husband to her three children, if not her two grandchildren quite yet. “They’ve got BMW toy cars and bikes for now!” she says, with a smile.
Working his way up from Technician to quality control via a stint in service management, Workshop Controller Paul’s 26 years with Lloyd have given him the range of experience required to ensure a seamless service experience from start to finish. “Seeing the work through the workshop is my role, and that starts by liaising with customers and service managers to make sure we get the right information to help us with a first-time fix. I’ve been in this job a long time and I’m constantly learning - it’s a stressful role, but it’s rewarding getting it right. We run one of the most productive workshops in the country and have been ranked first for first-time fix on vehicles. What helps is that the different departments work closely and get on well, which is what you need now in this industry - it’s all down to customer satisfaction and you need everyone to work together to get that end result.”
PETRA HARDING. In a busy showroom like Lloyd Blackpool, housekeeping doesn’t stop - especially when you’re as hard working as Petra. The spotless site is testament to how seriously she takes her cleaning job. From day-today tasks like keeping the coffee machine filled and the never-ending battle with fingerprints, Petra’s natural inclination to help also sees her assisting with the odd bit of translation - in addition to her native German, Petra speaks French, Spanish and Catalan as a result of more than 20 years living in Spain. “I’m made to feel valued here, which doesn’t always happen when you’re the cleaner, so I try to do whatever I can to help. I’m always keeping busy - you’ll never find me sitting down in a corner.”

The Lloyd Bodyshop is where cars receive the same five-star treatment as their owners, as the state-of-the-art purposebuilt bodyshops at Lloyd Blackpool and Lloyd Colne prove; spotless and humming with efficiency, they’re everything the BMW benchmark expects and demands. “All our staff are fully qualified BMW trained technicians, and all the work we carry out is BMW-approved,” says Mark Lovesey, Bodyshop Manager at Lloyd Colne. “Customers bring their car to us because they know the high standard of service they’ll receive, and that they’ll be well looked after.” Reliability is key, though that doesn’t always mean that the work itself is predictable. “Most of our work tends to be parts replacement, accident damage, vandal damage, that type of thing,” he says.
BODYSHOP
Bodyshop Manager Mark Lovesey gives us a behind-the-scenes tour of the Lloyd Colne Bodyshop.
“Recently, we had two cars which were damaged by agricultural machinery falling off the back of a tractor. We had a situation about three months ago when a horse ran into the road and landed on the car. Luckily, the driver was okay, however the car was a complete mess - we managed to repair it all but that was a bit of a strange one. “The build quality of a BMW is to such a high standard that if a car is involved in a collision, the damage is rarely as bad as people think it’s going to be. The safety of the driver, passengers and pedestrians is the utmost priority in the design of the cars, but they are also designed to break in such a way that there’s minimal structural damage to the car.” Whereas winter would once have been the busiest period, Mark says that seasonal trends aren’t as noticeable as they once were, though he admits that a run of storm-damaged cars recently took everyone by surprise. “Some of the inclement weather that hit certain parts of the country brought in 20-25 cars affected by hail damage - some had dents the size of tennis balls,” he says. “It’s something that’s quite common in Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, but not in the UK and we had to bring in specialist technicians in paintless dent removal. They’re known as ‘storm-chasers’ because they track the path of the storms and travel to where the work will be.” Whatever the scenario, the Bodyshops at Lloyd Colne and Lloyd Blackpool, with their leading edge facilities and the latest technology for repairs and paint refinishing, will get your car back on the road, looking and feeling as great as before, using approved parts and paints that allow for warranties to be valid. Approved by BMW and many of the world’s leading car manufacturers besides, the bodyshops are also approved by many leading insurers including Allianz, Aviva and Admiral.

THE DIARY
Customers visiting Lloyd Blackpool’s showroom may have found themselves dealing with Superman or Batman as Lloyd staff went all out to raise funds for needy children on Superhero Day. For every car sold at Lloyd Blackpool over that special week, the centre gave £100 to Cash for Kids, raising £2,000 for the charity which helps looks after children with disabilities or who are disadvantaged. While the centre’s staff dressed up as superheroes, Lloyd Blackpool provided Rock FM with two cars to travel between local businesses to host the morning show and raise funds, with the event ending at the Lloyd Blackpool showroom.
